@wissox Thanks for the update. I guess I have to find new material. Drat!

Can you imagine that conversation?

@BShark Great article by CJ Moore. Here is a highlight that is amazing:
https://theathletic.com/2537301/2021/04/23/marcus-garrett-kansas-defensive-specialist-bill-self/ ↗ An appreciation of Marcus Garrett, Kansas defender extraordinaire – The Athletic
**Self’s way of making sure everyone appreciated how special Garrett was this year was to point out the man he defended never scored double-digit points against him, a claim that seemed maybe to have a hint of hyperbole.
Out of curiosity, I started keeping track, rewatching all of the defensive possessions that got tagged to Garrett on Synergy and charting them to see if Self’s claim was true. It was. The most points he legitimately gave up in the 29 games he played as a senior was six on two contested 3s against North Dakota State. If you really wanted to challenge Self’s claim, you could contend that Garrett allowed 11 points in a Feb. 8 win over Oklahoma State. That night his man made three 3s when he was helping in the post or tagging a roller, which made him late to closeouts, but he was simply carrying out assignments. Avery Anderson driving past him on a closeout was really the only bucket surrendered that day. In total, opponents scored 58 points on Garrett where he was the primary defender. That’s 58 points in the 956 minutes he was on the floor.
When revealed to Self, that number, not surprisingly, got him excited. He started doing the math in his head, figuring there are about 40 points in every game where you can say X-player on his team allowed that basket, and because Garrett played 29 games, that means he gave up on average one bucket a game.
“Unbelievable,” Self said.**
I wonder if any agents or other advisors have told kids that they might improve their pro chances if they have another coach who might focus on a different part of their game. Or whose offense or defense is different enough that learning it will broaden their training. I remember when the Syracuse zone was considered by some to stunt some players pro chances because they had seldom played m2m in college. (Back when the NBA actually allowed no zone.)
I can see players thinking variety might be good. On the other hand, switching before you have actually learned anything from your first coach, much less mastered it, wouldn't serve that purpose.
I also wonder how many of these transfers are occurring without campus visits (informal, if any). I can't imagine switching with no idea what a school is like.
@BShark Thank you!
@BShark Could you please screenshot or describe the link? I do not have Instagram or FB!
For the zillions with no pro prospects, I wonder what the effect will be on the overall bb graduation rate. RPIs are going to be in upheaval, I would think.
@Marco Maybe if he has any pro aspirations overseas, a year against ACC opponents could give him a chance to get more exposure internationally.
Or maybe he likes Cuban food and doesn't like freezing his butt off.
Or what you said.
@Texas-Hawk-10 Immediately playing after transferring might actually hurt the NBA "minor league" as players use the opportunity to go someplace where they can play more without the pressure of staying on a competitive roster for not that much money. That could help mid-major schools get disenchanted top 100's.
I also think the new normal will be signing as many quality players as possible. See who thrives, and the disgruntled ones can leave to find more fertile pastures. But from a coach's perspective, those guys still provide valuable practice minutes.
I think one reason we didn't do so well this year is because our scout team couldn't make our offense better with effective D, especially Gethro.

Anyone drafted by or traded to Sacramento has the worst luck. I think Webster's has a Kings logo in the definition of "crappy luck."

@wissox Yeah, because of analytics (home runs are worth the strikeouts, etc). Thanks, slide rules.

literally 23 days of your life spent watching ball
Holy Crap! Imagine how many hours in that total would be commercials!
And I suspect the total time of ball in play would be just a few hours.
The rest? Waiting and waiting, sometimes in thrilling suspense, and sometimes with nothing happening except watching them spit or scratch.
I love baseball, but I would probably swallow a grenade if I had to watch a team's every game!
Mea culpa for my reference to why I like MLB right now. My comment triggered 'prox's.
Kind of hard to talk about MLB as an institution in the baseball section without a reference to why the All Star Game was moved.
And the fans got 10 innings...without having to pay extra. Hmmm...overall, do games average less than or more than 9 innings. There are 7 inning dbl-headers, extra-innings, games called because of rain... @wissox, what's the call--good or bad overall? 🤔
@Texas-Hawk-10 I thought Dotson acknowledged Howard as a big influence. Not sure. I do have Oldtimer's disease....
@approxinfinity Living 8 miles from GA, I am a big MLB fan at the moment.
@AsadZ I already gave an opinion on this, but it might simply be that he thinks it would be cool to work with Beard and is looking forward to recruiting kids to the $300 million facility.
@BShark Of course it can, but when you are as likely to get a guaranteed contract as Gooden was when he elected, there is virtually no risk. Undrafted players stuck in the G League without 2 way contracts may be earning less money than might be necessary to buy a college education if they flame out in 1 or 2 years. Might make more money overseas, but that has its own risks and for many players not named Keith Langford can be miserable and not too lucrative.
A guy who was doing the termite inspection of our house got lured to go pro after 2 years because he hired an agent who promised he would be drafted. Nope. Instead, he wandered among teams in South America, never earned more than $18,000, got injured and was cut while having to pay his own way home. Had no means available to go back to school.
Gooden is a best case scenario, the termite guy obviously among the worst. Obviously Ochai is further along and probably has more resources available.
@BShark Gooden, of course, knew he would be drafted, was drafted 4th, played 14 years in the NBA, and earned almost $68 million.
Ochai may not be coveted so much by the people writing checks.
Are we going to have Christian B1, and Christian B2? I mean, we are a public school. What about the establishment clause, for ------'s sake?
@BShark I haven't had a loss of anyone close to me due to the virus, so I can't pretend I know how you feel. But I can only imagine the dismay of foregone futures together for anyone who has lost friends or family. The saddest part for me is the feeling of helplessness that something so small has destroyed so much, and at this stage, how frustrating that we are so close to defeating it but not close enough to still save everybody.
Perhaps your friend's passing will at least serve as a beacon of light illuminating the risks that so many still face even as we advance with vaccinations toward normalcy in some (finally foreseeable) future.
I hope you can adjust to your own hollow space and fill it with those memories that previously might have seemed mundane but now are worth so much. Like the many times we have seen cancer victims or survivors memorialized, perhaps your friend's passing can help others to keep themselves safe to save their loved ones from the grief you are experiencing.
Please keep yourself safe, and take joy in helping your friend live on through your continued celebration of knowing them.
@wissox We don't always know what other people have heard or who they know.
Being here in the 19th century Confederacy--oops, South Carolina--I rely on you for Big 10 and Chicago info (surprised we don't have more in Windy City), @Crimsonorblue22 for Lawrence through Wichita stuff, @RockChalkinTexas for all things Lone Star, @jayballer67 and virtually anyone except me for recruiting info, etc etc etc. I think we have people like @BShark and @FarmerJayhawk who certainly seem to have a lot more sources connections than most of us.

@Fightsongwriter Saying someone's comment is not worth responding to is not a contribution to "debate" and seems designed only to inflame.
You are now in ongoing confrontations with 2 different posters on 2 threads. Just an observation since we on this board generally try t0o be at least somewhat respectful. In other words, even if calling someone a damned fool might be accurate, it is better to do so in other, respectful, terms.

@Texas-Hawk-10 I wonder how many dunks Big Dave would've missed if he still weighed 290?
I wonder if he could have gotten off the ground!
Oh, yeah, him.
The timing meant that all the news coming out about his assault charged referred to him as a "former" Jayhawk player. For once the staff acted preemptively.
@Texas-Hawk-10 Did we have any suspensions or off-court incidents this year? I remember people being so concerned about the "character" of our players after Josh-in-the-parking-lot, Preston-on-the-curb and Bragg-pretty-much-everywhere.
Funny no one ever mentions Tharpe as a vital cog of the past. That last EJ pass to the poor guy...looked totally shocked, as were we all.
@Texas-Hawk-10 That reminds me...Did EJ ever explain why he flicked the Michigan guy in the 'nads?
@BShark Trying to draw out he-who-shall-not-be-named?
@Texas-Hawk-10 Or possibly gained a bunch back during high school!
@jayballer67 Dave lost 40 to 50 pounds in his first year at Oak Hill high school. Doke lost 60, I think after arriving at KU. Both pretty much transformed their bodies.
This whole discussion takes me back to the best nickname for a "sizeable" guy ever:
Charles Barkley, The Round Mound of Rebound
I still chuckle!
@Kcmatt7 Yeah, but he wasn't the only reason we lost to USC! 🙃
@Kcmatt7 I think your post makes it look like I wrote that on Feb 1. To be clear, I never questioned the post strategy.
Now, to particulars: The point is that Dave played much better during Big 12 play, particular the resurgence that took KU to 2nd place from around 6th. We earned a 3 seed based on that surge. You are blaming him for the loss at the finish as if your predictions of his being responsible played out.
Dave went from flailing away to post-season accolades after you wrote this:
@Kcmatt7 said in This is a Second round team if they keep playing McCormick:
But, we shouldn’t be hanging our season on a guy who hasn’t developed much in three years like he is all of a sudden going to turn his season around these last two months.
Maybe you don't know what Most Improved Player, or 2nd team All Big 12, mean, but it sure seems you are still trying to justify prediction, while the coaches and media and the team itself would laugh you out of the room.
I know about that thread. Did the 2nd half of the season play out the way the thread discussed? Who predicted him being a 2nd team Big 12, or the conference's Most Improved Player?Covid is Dave's fault? Outside shooting and inability to defend the 3 are Dave's fault? Who predicted those things?
Forget the title. Look at the specifics...what about Dave's play was predictable over the last 16 games to lead to the loss?
A title about crappy and lethargic guard play leaving us a 2nd round team would have been more accurate.
Or maybe you all just amazingly predicted everything, or perhaps some of you cannot get past thumping your chests about how right you were that Dave would be the death of the team.
@justanotherfan said in So- with all these players coming and going, what is next years team gonna look like?:
I knew that if Big Dave was our main guy offensively we would be a Round of 32 team.
Pretty BS stretch to say the tourney loss occurred as you predicted, or that it was due to Dave, not Jalen, being the focal point. So, Wilson at the 4 or 5 with the small guys would have taken us further? You predicted that having Dave at center meant Wilson would barely be able to suit up against USC due to Covid? and that Dave--after heroically propelling us out of the 1st round without Wilson to help--would be playing on a broken foot 2 days later? His being the focal point in Big 12 play meant the guards and wings couldn't shoot 3s, make layups, rebound, or defend even a lick?
If you foresaw all that, you need to quit law and just buy lottery tickets.
I cannot see how the contract for Self would discourage anyone from wanting to come work under him. This could only be true if they hoped Self was likely to move to the NBA (less likely every year) or if they might hope he will get fired (not a possibility for poor performance; only remotely theoretical for the Adidas crap).
The contract is symbolic only. He can still be fired, the only question being the cost of doing so.
As to Howard leaving, I would guess that Beard wants a proven recruiter to help him retain good players and get new ones. The opportunity to get in on the ground floor of potentially rebuilding Texas to national prominence again could enhance Howard's reputation far more than his role at KU. He already has done what he could here.
@justanotherfan Besides, with those 9 guys as your foundation, you will have the other team completely outnumbered!
@jayballer67 Announcers always talk up how the trailing team can catch up. The network wants a close game, not a blowout.
If a certain poster was still active here, I would add a passionate nomination of Brady Morningstar, right after investing in blood pressure medicine producers.
@Texas-Hawk-10 That was the worst inbound strategy and execution I have ever seen.
"Okay, we want the ball in the hands of the best shooter we have ever had for the last shot. So, let's start with her tiny self in the lane and see what happens as our inbounder worries because no one is open, then looks away when our shooter gets open so she has to pass it while McD is running away from the basket. That way, our shooter will have to go back toward the basket drawing everbody in the arena to defend her. What could go wrong?"
Well, dammit, Mitch just might have to redshirt again. Maybe for a couple more years with these recruits and transfers coming in.
When he finally leaves KU, he will probably get a gold watch and a pension.
