@wissox Well yeah, but KU was your second love so you aren't as nuts as the KU fans to whom I was referring!

Newman for nothing more than shooting Duke out of the tournament.
Thanks for such a happy thought!
@wissox I don't think KU fans realize how freaking hard it is to coach.
Both games had huge blown calls in the last few minutes. I think they had more effect in the first game, but the second game's refs should feel really crappy when they review the tapes.
"You mean I called a foul on someone who never was closer than a foot?"
"Yep. Enjoy next season in HS ball."
@Kcmatt7 Look at the rosters for the best shooters on your list. Give Dave a few players like Pierce, Hinrich, Chalmers or Collins, or deadeye shooters like Svi, or pair him with another big like Arthur or perhaps a twin of himself, or wings like Rush and Wiggins, and I think he could do very well. How many on that list had to wait playing behind NPOY candidates and were the only McD all-stars starters on the team when they finally started? (McD all-stars Preston, Dotson, and Grimes left; Bryce Thompson never reached his hype.)
Yes, it didn't work out when Dave was paired with Doke, but 2 bigs have to work well with each other. Doke's game didn't lend itself to high/low exchanging and sharing with, well, anyone. And don't ignore the near-80% contributions of Dave at the FT line.
@KirkIsMyHinrich said in So- with all these players coming and going, what is next years team gonna look like?:
So for some perspective on Dave, here are the field goal percentages of some other recent KU big men:
- Raef LaFrentz - 55.5%
- Nick Collison - 56.2%
- Wayne Simien 55.8%
- Darrell Arthur - 54.1%
- Jeff Withey - 56.5%
- Joel Embiid - 62.6%
- Udoka Azubuike - 74.6%
- Cole Aldrich - 57.4%
- Darnell Jackson - 58.0%
- Landen Lucas - 61.2%
- Cliff Alexander - 56.6%
- Cheick Diallo - 56.9%
- Jamari Traylor - 53.2%
- Marcus Morris - 55.5%
- Markieff Morris - 55.3%
- Greg Ostertag - 55.0%
- Julian Wright - 55.5%
- Sasha Kaun - 56.8%
- Perry Ellis - 50.8%
- Eric Chenowith - 45.4%
- And finally Dave McCormack, who shot 51.5% from the field this season.
Lookong at the list, I see quite a few All Americans who played together or with other historically good and great players (Hinrich, Collins, Miles, etc etc). I wonder, hmmm, does having 2 or 3 other consistent scorers in a lineup have any effect on another player having a better chance to score?
Name all the high percentage shooters Dave had the chance to play with this year. For that matter, how often did KU have anyone of size who could help take the pressure off? Jalen rebounded well, but seemed nowhere to be found in the banging underneath.
@Kcmatt7 I was simply going by the stats as listed by the Big XII on its website. Argue with them over the criteria, not me!
Yeah, he was awful, pure crap. Dave was only second in fg % for the entire season in the big 12, and first in fg % in conference games. .544 compared to 2nd place at .503.
A number of guys had higher %, but like Sims of Texas only shot about 5 times per game and didn't qualify.
Good god, the Dave bashing just doesn't stop.
I am sure those TT fans hating on Beard would turn down the chance to move up or make a huge national splash 100% of the time. No, they would stay in the hinterlands with a smaller, less competitive employer forever, because of loyalty.
@wissox The 75 season was indeed my freshman spring at KU. I forgot Harrick's title at UCLA--actually tuned out much of the world in the 90's!
@wissox As I watched I was wondering which of the last second shots you were referring to!
So, I went to Michigan (for law school) and never cared about basketball there. Never went to a game. No feeling either when they won in 1989, nor last night when they got upset.
Also was accepted to UCLA, where I applied just because I thought it would be fun to be in LA and because of their bb history (last champ was while I was a junior at KU). I actually feel more allegiance to a school I never went to. Weird, huh? (Being a Bruins fan was seriously tested when Lonzo was there, however!)
Looking forward to the F4 because I can cheer for all the schools--well, Kelvin can go suck eggs, but I am happy to see Grimes succeeding.
@wissox So your feed is at least 2 full minutes ahead of mine!
Reflecting back to the depths of Baylor's massive tragedy and scandal under Dave Bliss, I would like Baylor to win it all as a testament to Drew's perseverance and commitment to their program. The football program still stinks like rotted fish, but ol' Homer did a damned good job with his kids at Valpo, and Drew is following in step by keeping bb clean (as far as we know...).
@Crimsonorblue22 said in Gonzaga:
@nuleafjhawk lol, don't think he beats his players or coaches!
Never heard of Drew's wife yelling at anyone, either.
At least he had some nice minutes going out.

@wissox You seem to ignore that the other shots were in the course of plays that started with more time left than Hill's full-court pass to CL. I hate Leitner, but it was a turnaround shot from a location he seldom would shoot from (and with no time to set up), so I consider it much harder than any of the shots that started with the player facing the basket.
In addition, it is really the whole play that was amazing, which to me is more like how Sherron's ball-handling and pass while falling helped make Mario's shot more memorable than Smart's.
All the shots were clutch, but I (despite holding my nose) have to award degree of difficulty points to the Dookies.
@drgnslayr Well, phooey. If it was your fault why are so many people blaming the coaches and players? Just remember, if it is your fault now then we will certainly give you credit when we win it all!
hmmm...yahoo seems to have taken down the link
@wissox That was really about the most impressive one of all (poor D Wade!). I need time to look up some others.....
@Kcmatt7 said in What happened? (comedy appreciated):
...sacrifice his first born son...
Well, Tyler has used up his eligibility so he might as well be good for something!
The team looked exhausted. The weave seemed to be a waste of energy, no one looking for an opening. More of a passing drill than being used to free up anyone, with little effort to pass in and out to Dave or Mitch at the high post. Wilson was used there at first and then seemed to be playing random ball.
Still, it was an interesting season. Have to be proud of the team for resurrecting the regular season with tenacious defense, amid making many adjustments in training and schedules due to pandemic.

Saw Ben Simmons up close and personal a lot of times. LSU fans could care less about basketball.
I think Ben Simmons felt the same way about LSU.
@bskeet And....water finds its level.
I have just today seen more abysmally missed shots from < 3 feet than I have seen in entire tournaments.
@wissox Those blasted pipes! Good luck!
@wissox And we were told the cheerleaders weren't going to Indy!
Going to 2nd round, or are the tix single game? If you do, you need pom poms this time!
How on earth did USC lose 7 games if they are so invincible? And losing to unranked teams...yet we are supposed to be dismayed and fearful? Not buying it--we have heard this refrain before!
Well, heck, guess I don't even need to watch.
@wissox You da man!
@Crimsonorblue22 Inquiring minds want to know!
@stoptheflop I'd do it, but sometimes coaches like to keep someone who has proven ability to spark off the bench.
@wissox said in That Other Team From Spokane game thread:
@DanR Mitch was not on the bench in the 2nd half. Saw come out of locker room just before the end of the game
Good in-arena info! I suspect he was getting checked out after auditioning for a reboot of Wipeout.
@DanR ESPN now has given him monster bandwidth predicting every game in the actual bracket. I used to get a kick out of his predictions of the Committee's work, but he is becoming as ubiquitous (and as annoying) on ESPN as Stephen A. Smith. So sorry they laid off so many staffers...nicer to have some variety.
@BeddieKU23 I was about to go look up the schedule and saw your post! Thx!
The commentators are looking forward to the TT-USt game. Nice analysis.
@KirkIsMyHinrich They are scared to breathe too much.
@BeddieKU23 said in 1st round know your foe Eastern Washington:
The troubling part of facing USC is they are #2 in the country in blocked shots. Always a concern for KU in the tourney
The games against UCLA (KU couldn't make layups) and Oregon (blocked shot, repeat ad nauseam) come to mind. If we were to also have issues with blocked shots against USC, I wonder if our 21st century tourney shooting percentage on 3 ft shots against Pac10/12 teams might be a Div 1 low.
In listing the stars who were unavailable or hampered for NCAA play, how did we manage to omit one of the most significant -- Simien in 2003?

More seriously, you definitely have had a nasty experience. At least you know it was a real vaccine and your immune system is determined to keep you alive!
Zags' year, me thinks.
And I kinda hope so, cuz I am sick of references to Bobby Knight and Indiana!

Some say puns are the lowest form of humor. Those people are just jealous.
Punning is art, and you get a gold star for this one.
How about someone outside college athletics but with proven professional sports executive experience? Kevin Pritchard? R. C. Buford?
Glad Gregg Marshall is out, and his prior school Winthrop is in the tourney.
I actually gave a talk to an class there 12 years ago to a bunch of future teachers about education law. Nice people!
We go tomorrow! About 50 miles away. Anything closer would have to wait until April 9.
My brother and SIL (68) got their first Moderna on Friday and reported "easy peasy" with no reactions.
I wonder how many people who react strongly to the 1st shot might have had their immune system already "primed" to react by having had the virus without knowing.
