If The Royals Sign Luke Heimlich β€’ Jun 25, 2018 11:33 PM

@Kcmatt7 There are a number of companies fully willing to hire cons and give them a chance to prove themselves, some with the support of state rehab agencies. I would feel very differently about Heimlich had he simply taken his lumps after getting the benefit of the plea. It is his 180 degree reversal of being willing to be held accountable that I find worrisome.

If The Royals Sign Luke Heimlich β€’ Jun 25, 2018 08:04 PM

@BShark Speaking from the Left, I find it amusing that both sides generalize about the other side.

Note to world: All generalizations are false, including this one!

If The Royals Sign Luke Heimlich β€’ Jun 25, 2018 05:23 PM

@Kcmatt7 I don't think the State should kill him, but I know from experience that someone who commits abuse over a 2 year period, pleads guilty to avoid jail by going to therapy, and then denies it ever happened is likely to not be your model for someone deserving a second chance. I would never trust anyone like that ever again.

TOP 10 4 year players under Self β€’ Jun 25, 2018 12:31 PM

@KUSTEVE He probably only was judged on the average quality of his play in any 4-year sample. It would have been unfair to make it cumulative.

@HighEliteMajor I am pretty sure that would eliminate a season or two of D1 basketball while every college restocked with players who, with their extended families, all could pass lie detector tests.

If The Royals Sign Luke Heimlich β€’ Jun 25, 2018 12:19 PM

@BShark His version is that he didn't do it but pled guilty (to a felony) on bad legal advice and to avoid the trauma to his niece of going to trial. He says he has no idea why she accused him, but the molesting allegedly occurred over a 2 year period. He went through court ordered counseling and the judge, after Heimlich completed the program and was accepted to college, led an ovation in the courtroom for him as a fine young man moving on with his life.

I had cases like this all the time in the military doing criminal appeals, and also while working in a Child Abuse clinic in law school. Invariably, the guys telling me they only pled guilty to an ongoing series of molestations because of a bad lawyer were lying. While I did encounter cases where someone was accused in ambiguous circumstances (there was one recently in the news where a father was accused of kiddie porn after taking pictures of his little kids in a bath--reported by the picture printer, but totally innocent), this case involved a lot more unambiguous physical actions than that.

And it should be noted that the therapist's notes from his counseling sessions referred to his having written his 7 page plea admission "as if he were guilty." (Edit from a prior version.)

A commenter on the article I read about this case said that reading about the judge's ovation felt like he was back reading an article years ago in The Onion that had been headlined something like "Convicted Rapist Struggling to Overcome Trauma of Conviction."

Silvio β€’ Jun 18, 2018 10:05 PM

@drgnslayr Here is what you might be missing, as most people optimistic about Silvio seem to be ignoring it: Brian Bowen was ruled ineligible for next season based on the money his dad got for him going to Louisville despite the NCAA apparently having determined he did not know about it, despite the fact that Louisville held him out all last year, and despite the fact that he was now enrolled at South Carolina which had nothing to do with it. The amount was allegedly over $100,000 if that is a major difference.

Silvio β€’ Jun 18, 2018 07:19 PM

@HighEliteMajor We have seen the NCAA drag its heels to impose a lengthy de facto sanction as occurred with BP. Happened with Cliff, too, and would probably have dragged on longer if KU hadn't made a major ruckus about Diallo.

Interestingly, all 3 of those occurred when the player was being held out by our staff as a precaution.

So, does that mean we made a good prophylactic decision to avoid a major penalty on KU (at the kid's expense, altho we scrambled due to unavailabilty), or that we should force the NCAA's hand by announcing we will play someone?

Is it possible the delay on Silvio, which allegedly was due to his last-minute paperwork and the NCAA holiday, was another de facto suspension due to the NCAA having notice of the guardian issue?

@drgnslayr That is a vicious lie! I didn't know anything about looking up dresses back then!

Full disclosure: I was impeached as class president of my 8th grade Unified Studies class because I was caught with a rubber band after a beleagured Mr. Northcutt banned all rubber bands. Funny true story: my best friend raised the issue in class when I was sick on the day after the horrid misconduct. He wanted to get the regular work off track, and claimed we could learn about impeachment and stuff. Mr N bought it, my friend prosecuted, and we wasted 2 whole days. The most timid kid in class was my defense counsel. 6 votes. I couldn't even get 6 votes. Boom! Outtahere!!

This was in 1969-70, before Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton made these inquiries popular. Trendsetter me. But it was based on (Northcuttian) high crimes, not cheating.

Keegan Gushing Over McCormack β€’ Jun 08, 2018 08:35 PM

@JayHawkFanToo You have a near-Herculean ability to keep pushing the same opinion, unfazed by actual facts like the draft evaluation regarding his being prone to injuries in college, or Self's evaluation that you took out of context. Sure, all players get twinges and aches, but the coach definitely doesn't specifically bring up a lengthy nagging injury about all players (sure, call it a tweak, that sounds better). And the knee surgery in the NBA cost Wayne his make-it-or-break-it third preseason after missing most of his second pro season, whether or not you think that was relevant in his not landing another position after being traded and cut. Must have been a coincidence for Simien, this "tweener" taken in the first round that Pat Riley must have thought could fit in somewhere--but only until he could not physically get on the court consistently.

Signs are everywhere. β€’ Jun 08, 2018 03:22 PM

@Barney No, but we would have if we had had to declare the barter transaction! (Does anyone report barter income??)

Keegan Gushing Over McCormack β€’ Jun 08, 2018 01:19 AM

Jaybate's recollection seems to have been the impression of others, too (including me). From a predraft analysis of Wayne: "The other weakness to talk about is his tendency to get injured, and missed time due to injury as recently as January. Other than these two issues, there is little not to like about Simien. However, these aren't minor gripes. It's not good to see a player who will be forced to rely on brute strength and physicality come up lame so often."

@BShark Elaborate, por favor?

Keegan Gushing Over McCormack β€’ Jun 08, 2018 01:07 AM

@JayHawkFanToo

According to Bill Self, Simien had a groin injury almost his entire junior year (when he was 3rd team All America).

http://m.kusports.com/news/2004/nov/07/simien_tired_of/?templates=mobile β†—

He also lost 4 games as a senior with a thumb injury.

As a pro, he lost almost his whole 2nd season to his salmonella infection because he kept suffering repeated setbacks for months. Then he had a knee injury, and surgery, at the beginning of the Miami's next season's camp that kept him out of exhibitions. The trade to Minnesota followed, and he was cut thereafter.

I think it is fair to say that he was plagued by bad luck, and by being unavailable due to physical ailments and injuries during the most important stage of his nascent pro career right when he could have really proved himself.

Signs are everywhere. β€’ Jun 08, 2018 12:34 AM

@Crimsonorblue22 We have had exceptional success--literally over $19,000 in a total of 6. (Most was in one where we sold three bedrm sets and a formal DR set with huge china cabinet.)

We had lots of stuff to downsize as we went from 5100 sq ft to 1600 ft over 12 years, plus all of my mother's crap when I moved her here. Having friends help is huge--I once gave a couple of helpers a box of my liquor when we left the house that had a great basement bar.

Snake bite β€’ Jun 07, 2018 04:48 PM

@Crimsonorblue22 We can be pretty sure that the Missouri guy was likely brain-dead before he was bitten. Might be a medical first since he was moving around while brain-dead for years, probably.

At least a severed snake has an excuse for not knowing it is dead.

Snake bite β€’ Jun 07, 2018 12:52 PM

@dylans My grandfather attached the rattles he got on fishing excursions to dowels. We would shake them to scare the crap out of each other when playing in his back yard.

Snake bite β€’ Jun 07, 2018 01:44 AM

@Crimsonorblue22 @dylans

Very timely for me!

Last week my neighbor's kid, graduating from HS tomorrow, came and got me after his friend found a snake in his own car as he was getting out of it after driving 7 miles over here. They were laughing so hard, after the friend's heart restarted.

I went over there to find the snake trapped but writhing around hanging out the bottom of the door, not injured apparently, but held tightly by the bottom rubber weatherstrip.

I lopped his head off about 4 inches back, which kept wriggling in the sand. Then I opened the door, and about 18 inches of coiled wriggling snake fell out. Both pieces kept moving as I used a snow shovel to seal them into an old drywall bucket.

The kids freaked out completely when the snake didn't know it was dead. And the friend freaked out even more when I said the snake may have gone into the sun-warmed car to lay eggs so he just might want a thorough inspection by mid July or so.

Did some research and discovered it was probably a milk snake, but my first impression was that the markings had looked a lot like a copperhead. After more research into the head and body still moving despite being separated, I decided to not open the bucket to recheck the ID. There are stories of snakes cut into many pieces still moving, and headless bodies basically striking at something touching them, and the severed heads killing people even days later. Scary! And why I won't swim at night here....

@DoubleDD Unfortunately, people don't do it themselves and then they fall apart and trash up the yards of people who live nearby. We were taking ours down in a yard where we had asked the guy for permission the day before, and he told us we were the first to ever ask or clean up.

We used to live in a place with a strict HOA that would fine people for leaving them up as a littering violation. The only good rule they enforced, but still not worth having the little dictators running our lives.

@jaybate-1.0 I listened to James Taylor et al a lot in high school in the early 70's. My grandfather (born 1900) came to live with us. He said all he heard was clanging on guitar strings and repeated shouting "GOTTA HANGNAIL! GOTTA HANGNAIL! GOTTA HANGNAIL!"

I think he might have had some issues by the time he was 70.....

Anyone watching NBA Playoffs? β€’ Jun 03, 2018 12:50 PM

@JayHawkFanToo After the strip was called, he started complaining about fouls on the other Cavs and non-calls on the Warriors, exacerbated by the reversed charge call. LBJ played a helluva game but certainly let the refs get in his head, which (with exhaustion, probably, that seemed to affect everybody as I think you said) really diminished his OT performance.

Maybe we should go to playground rules, get rid of refs, and have players call the fouls. Challenges go to replay upstairs, where a group of refs with access to a huge screen vote within a minute of the first replay or their vote doesn't register. Any call that is reversed results in change of possession, or free throws to the other team, or better yet, 5 mins bench time for the flopping player. Any challenged call that is upheld gets an extra FT. Use Internt'l rules for goaltending and eliminate charge calls altogether.

Anyone watching NBA Playoffs? β€’ Jun 02, 2018 05:50 PM

@approxinfinity Players want the refs to be perfect when they do not foul or are fouled. They are happy when the refs miss their fouls or are undeservedly awarded FTs.

Replay is funny because of the possibility of improved calls vs ridiculous attempt at perfection. I am all for allowing a couple of challenges per game, but not for a 2 minute replay to decide if 3 tenths of a second should be put back on the clock after every play in the last 5 minutes of every game. The NCAA tourney was excruciating with those.

Anyone watching NBA Playoffs? β€’ Jun 02, 2018 03:35 PM

@kjayhawks Not overall, certainly. But I think he can be as a passer--his court vision is fabulous--but not if he takes his score-first mentality to the League.

Anyone watching NBA Playoffs? β€’ Jun 02, 2018 03:32 PM

@JayHawkFanToo I think it is weird to let that judgment call be reviewed as an add-on if the justification is to prevent a bad call from deciding the game. Any bad call can change the outcome. Fouls called that don't actually occur. Goal-tending. A Marcus Smart style flop. Even a travel. If you open the door to one with that justification, I see no reason to not open up others. It is only the last 2 minutes after all.

On the call the other night, I think controversy could be avoided if the rule said an offensive player has to be given room him to take a full step, or say, for him to move 2 or 3 feet when moving toward the basket--enough to realistically change his direction to avoid contact. Even if that had been ruled a charge, as the announcers thought, it would have been based on whether LBJ was in position before the upward motion began. That still would not have given Durant any chance to change direction once he is lifting off his plant foot. Moving the focus to the offensive player's "realistic opportunity to avoid contact" would avoid encouraging these collisions.

Or just get rid of charge calls inside a larger restricted area.

We might all agree on something--return to technicals for continued bitching and highly demonstrative disgust with calls. Players get fined if they say so much as "that was a bad call" calmly in a discussion with the media, but in a game they go nuts and rave all over the court. This would actually help players, I think. For example, LBJ had reason on a couple of other calls to be unhappy but he then got distracted and missed a defensive possession. I saw Thompson do that, too.

Anyone watching NBA Playoffs? β€’ Jun 02, 2018 01:56 PM

@kjayhawks "... ain’t no NBA team gonna let some rook come in and think they run the show."

39 years ago that was the big question about Magic Johnson joining Kareem's Lakers. His versality and personality won everyone over, but most importantly he cared mostly about winning and proved it by setting everyone else up. Sharing the basketball is what endears players to a ball possession teammate. If Trae concentrates on his assists, driving and dishing, and just letting his phenomenal shooting be a constant threat (rather than 1st option), he will have a lengthy and happy pro career because his passing ability is mind-boggling.

Anyone watching NBA Playoffs? β€’ Jun 01, 2018 09:04 PM

@Crimsonorblue22 I would say roughly 90% of people's opinions on this call could be accurately predicted by whether or not they have a positive view of LBJ.

Anyone watching NBA Playoffs? β€’ Jun 01, 2018 08:56 PM

@justanotherfan @JayHawkFanToo @Crimsonorblue22

Yes, he was moving but that shouldn't have mattered. The question is whether he was in the path in a legal guarding position before Durant started his upward motion, not whether he was still. The announcers and their "expert on call" former ref thought he was there and that it was a charge, and were shocked at the reversal.

Draft Declarations Thread β€’ May 31, 2018 12:42 AM

@BeddieKU23 Considering that Bowen was cleared by the NCAA of any direct involvement in the $19,500 received by his dad from Adidas, and that he already lost his freshman year after Louisville held him out, this does not bode well for Silvio.

@HighEliteMajor Let's see, what is the script? "I apologize if anyone was offended by my totally innocent non-offensive comment."

Actually, my comment is semi-serious, mostly about the education leaders whose disgraceful schools here leave so many kids and communities underserved at best, but it also stems from observing the SC legislature. I figure no two public groups could be so utterly corrupt and inept, so maybe they are just collectively brain-damaged.
