@JayHawkFanToo I don't know why Trae Young didn't try driving to the basket every single time OU got the ball. I thought our WVU game provided a textbook example of how to get lots of points by constantly driving when outside shots are not working, as well as how to foul up our post players. Curiously passive.

@JayHawkFanToo A quick glance showed me the fewest FTs attempted against KU ever was zero by....

....wait for it....

....TOPEKA YMCA (1899)!!!

But that was in Topeka. Didn't find AFH yet.

IT FINALLY HAPPENED.... HELL FROZE OVER! • Feb 21, 2018 11:53 AM

@HighEliteMajor I thought it was a pretty ironic comment, since you are also about the only person who didn't jump all over him when he has made his outlandish comments!

@BeddieKU23 Thank you!

Louisville must forfeit 2013 Title • Feb 20, 2018 11:31 PM

@DoubleDD If Louisville had hosted parties to which strippers and hookers were available and everyone campus-wide was allowed to c- ...uh, participate, the '13 title would still be theirs. UNC did that--everyone could take the bogus classes even if no one but athletes knew about them.

Outrageous Police Murder • Feb 20, 2018 11:20 PM

@HighEliteMajor Those mental health calls are all too often fraught with confusing or incomplete information. Cops go into those situstions not knowing what to expect, probably expecting danger far more than we would think. There are always fake calls, calls where a domestic violence situation has not been reported by a caller, etc. I would hate to be a cop, especially since they get less training in these scenarios than they should.

That said, some cops make situations worse by being needlessly confrontational. As here, apparently, where, per your description, the cop was only threatened as a result of his own foolishness. One can imagine legitimate reasons for trying to block the car--the most legitimate being a visible weapon ready to possibly harm other people if he was allowed to leave. Other possibilities include being under the influence so that just letting him drive posed a threat, voiced threats to the cops or family members, and the like.

The least legitimate case for killing him would be the "I dare you to back this car up" scenario you described. We had one happen here last year, where a teenager in a drug deal got killed by would-be arresting cops who "felt threatened" even though, IIRC, the car was backing away from the cops at the time.

Families have all too often called 911 when a mentally ill person is acting aberrantly, not realizing a police response, not a medical one, is usually the first to arrive, and they arrive with a gun as their primary tool to protect themselves and others. The ill person, who has already reached a level of behavior concerning enough to warrant a call, immediately becomes a suspect, and a violent resolution too often becomes inevitable.

Budget cutbacks have gutted public safety agencies' ability to staff and train adequately to prepare for and respond to these confrontations. Medical privacy laws can prevent families from obtaining information they themselves need to handle their sibling, or parent, or child. And getting a family member treatment, especially for people with minimal insurance, can be a nightmare.

Then there are the "suicide by cop" events, where someone tries to force the police to shoot.

It is all so frustrating and heartbreaking. I hope that more info will come out about this to make it seem less infuriating, but I don't expect from your discussion that it is likely to.

Edit: Because of my limited Internet access where I am today, I could not access the video, so my response is based on the HEM explanation of what happened. That is why I discussed various possibilities.

@JayHawkFanToo That, plus I would love to know why no one has presented the notion that some coaches (not surprisingly, the ones of consistently highly ranked teams) recruit more agile and quicker players, and are wizards at teaching them to play without fouling as much as lesser players. So, it would be nice to see how the whistle list correlates over time to season rankings or standings.

Concluding KU gets "friendlier" whistles at home in conference play means nothing if not controlling for us likely having better teams than the Nine Stooges we have trampled for 13 conference seasons.

Louisville must forfeit 2013 Title • Feb 20, 2018 06:32 PM

Wikipedia already has their 2012 Final Four entry updated.

Incidentally, this means UK had an easier route to the final than we did. There will always be no one listed for them as a semi opponent in the official records and we had to beat Ohio State. NO FAIR!

@HighEliteMajor Shake hands and come out (NOT) fighting? Ok, I'll give it a whirl.

Keenan Evans is day to day • Feb 20, 2018 06:22 PM

@BeddieKU23 I was thinking it would be directed at us. 4 days to prepare but against Tech+ or Tech- ?

All of these "who deserves to get in" are dependent on conference tournaments proceeding as seeded.

When did that ever happen? For you fans who pay attention to lesser conferences, how will, say, 3 to 5 upsets in mid-major conferences change things? Which regular season champs, if upset, are automatically out, and which ones supplant the proffered "last 4 in"?

Edit: I realize a team considered in right now might stay in despite an upset. But the committee also has a history of punishing upsetees.

Keenan Evans is day to day • Feb 20, 2018 04:59 PM

If he is truly "day-to-day" as Beard is saying, it pretty much has to be a Grade 1 injury, and then it is a matter of pain tolerance. If properly taped and an appropriate othotic put in his shoe, it is not likely to get more injured (but his mobility might be hindered). Were it a Grade 2 or 3, it seems likely that it would need 2 to 8 weeks of time off, and continued play would possibly threaten the big toe joint with complications later.

I don't think Beard would press him to play if that latter possibility might happen. The real question is if Beard is intentionally making everyone think it is not severe when it really is, which leaves opponents in the dark. Whether he plays in the OSU game gives him a nice chance to further any deception either way.

Incidentally, for us old guys who never actually had turf toe, the pain is said to be similar to gout. I have a fairly severe case of that, and it has been excruciating if I ever am on the ground and try to stand up pushing off my right big toe ("so don't" . . . "yeah, I know").

Lite and dark • Feb 20, 2018 03:32 PM

@DanR PHOF!

And on that Lite-er note, I amusedly bow out.

@BeddieKU23 KSU's wins are a stark contrast a their horrible losses. Even I, as fierce a fan who ever pointed an oil can in Squeaky's direction, have to give him some points the past few weeks.

BShark said:

@dylans Yeah pretty much. I'm not convinced Preston ever plays a game for KU even with the car accident.

Without?

@BeddieKU23 "I believe Lunardi said they were dropping a seed line with every loss."

So they will be an 18 or 19 seed by the end of the season?

Lite and dark • Feb 20, 2018 03:08 PM

@BShark Trace the insults. But go back to page 1 and notice HEM never acknowledging my evidence directly rebutting the foundation of his "poison" query (in a post where I also said he had provided some food for thought). There were some sarcastic references to that on several threads, but the name calling and disparagement began with him.

Lite and dark • Feb 20, 2018 03:00 PM

@cragarhawk See, your post is as insulting as any name calling.

Show me a single post where anyone has ever suggested Self is infallible. Lots of us have challenged criticisms as unfounded, and virtually all of us have brought up, time after time, our own criticisms. Yet you simplify everything as if there is a group that believes in the divinity (your terminology) of Self. Bullcrap. Prove it. Give me a quote.

When someone posts an unfounded criticism of Self, we call him out and discuss why we think it is wrong. And sometimes critcs are right, and many of us say so. But only one group repeatedly accuses the other of being unwilling or unable to think, and only one group continues this mythical attack on imaginary people who brook no criticism of KU basketball.

IT FINALLY HAPPENED.... HELL FROZE OVER! • Feb 20, 2018 02:42 PM

@kjayhawks @BShark @chriz Deron had two years with Squeaky, one with Self. Played well as a freshman (6.3 ppg, 4.5 apg), but doubled his pts, and 50% increase in assists, as a soph, and stayed there as a junior. He received his major accolades his junior year when they went to the final.

I would give both coaches half of Williams. Squeaky inherited him, but he used him well.

Svi and malik • Feb 20, 2018 01:30 PM

@HighEliteMajor I would rather you didn't post anything. (You asked.) And no, it really wasn't a worthwhile discussion.

Svi and malik • Feb 20, 2018 11:56 AM

@HighEliteMajor He said several didn't deserve to start, but he couldn't replace everybody. And you did introduce the word "poison". And asking a question is a way of making an accusation. We went through this with you re Huddy.

I think the evidence overwhelms your theoretical need to inquire. Give it up. You were wrong. And it is time to acknowledge that. But that is something you never do.

Yet another potential KU Revenge Bracket after the 1 vs 16 game!

Svi and malik • Feb 20, 2018 01:17 AM

@BShark Newman has played a helluva lot of minutes for a player you say was "benched"; perhaps, "pulled from starting" temporarily is a better choice.

I doubt that Self would play someone an average of over 32 minutes per game if Self meant "chemistry problems" as "Malik is poison."

So, yes, on viewing his usage, it is fair to consider that leveling an acusation that accused Newman of being "poison," and to base it on an inferred message from Self, was careless, even reckless.

KU/OU Recap • Feb 19, 2018 11:21 PM

@nuleafjhawk Is that the famous PEZ dispenser move? Would be cool to be able to do it in boxing.

Svi and malik • Feb 19, 2018 10:40 PM

You know, lack of team chemistry can simply mean players aren't focusing properly on how to play together as a team. It doesn't have to mean they don't like each other.

Svi and malik • Feb 19, 2018 10:33 PM

@HighEliteMajor All he did was disagree with you by suggesting your inquiry was a stretch based on 2 comments. You are the one starting the attack.

@bcjayhawk "I believe that if the WSU fans were to have their DNA tested by 23 and me, the majority of them would learn they are related to Iowa State’s Mr. Weatherwax or the KSU bunch with their F*** KU signs."

Change "DNA" to "IQ" and delete "by 23 and me" and it still makes a lot of sense.

So, 1 title and only 1 All Star. Must be an effing good coach.

@approxinfinity Let it be me! Yes, everything is going to be okay.

And pay no attention to the fact that neither I, nor anyone else, can answer this question as to whether it will be okay any time in our personal, or even human, history.

But remember, it doesn't help to get upset about things you cannot do anything about. So, chill, sit back, grab some nachos or tofu or whatever floats your boat, and just enjoy the ride.

@jaybate-1.0 @JayHawkFanToo

Thank you both for this lengthy exercise that has provided several moments of chuckling as you have both pretended to be arguing over precisely . . . nothing.

It was very clever of you both to agree to work together to illustrate how people get caught up in silly arguments on the Internet over a word or two while the topic at hand gets completely ignored. This is something I know I have done many times. The equivalent of, "Are you looking at me?" in and then outside a bar, minus the cue sticks and bicycle chains and dropped beers.

I feel like a new man. Thank you again!

Svi and malik • Feb 19, 2018 03:42 PM

And if I was imagining a big problem and someone provided startling evidence that tended to disprove it, I would likely present a new imaginary scenario in which that evidence was fake.

Oops, this could seamlessly be transferred into another category....

Deuce Young: Slumping or Exposed? • Feb 19, 2018 03:19 AM

@dylans GS went nowhere in Curry's two years (2009-10, 2010-11) before Klay came, finishing 13th and 12th in their conference (26 and 36 wins, respectively). 13th again (23 wins) in their first year together (2011-12), but Curry only played 26 games. Their first full year together (2012-13) was breakout of the Splash Brothers, as GS finished 6th with more than double their win total (47), and upset their 1st rd playoff opponent. 6th again (51) in 2013-14, and 1st in 2014-15 (67 wins), with the NBA title.

Golden State's improvement came when Curry got Klay as an alternate threat. The same thing happened with MJ and Pippen: Jordan before Pippen improved the Bulls by 2 games from his rookie year to his 3rd year; they improved by 10 more the next year when Pippen came on board.

They are all studs, but the issue for OU is whether a stud alone can be successful. KU in 1988 had several players, but no stars, who helped fill the complementary player role, and that is why Danny and the Miracles pased into lore--very unusual to have one superstar so far above the rest of the team. One great stud and one near-great stud can together make a great team, but seldom does a great stud do it alone.

Studs like Trae this year can get gaudy stats, but by themselves it is usually going to be in overall disappointing seasons. See, Anthony, Carmelo, NYKnicks, who "led" them to an average of 35 wins from 2011-2017 (including a 17-65 year), 2 playoff appearances, while he avg'd 24.7 pts/7 rebs.

The Evolution of Doke • Feb 19, 2018 02:16 AM

@HighEliteMajor That should be any minute now.

Deuce Young: Slumping or Exposed? • Feb 19, 2018 02:08 AM

@BShark But where would Curry be without the complementary pieces, particularly Thompson?

@JayHawkFanToo F it is really bad it can hurt, so KSU's nonconf SOS can make a big difference when it is only 20th from the bottom. That is what kept S Carolina out of the Dance 2 years ago (as one of the first 4 out they automatically became a 1 seed in the the NIT). The whole SEC has been trying to upgrade their nonconf schedules to try to get more teams in.

@JayHawkFanToo He was only referencing nonconf SOS.

Hosmer to Padres? • Feb 18, 2018 10:39 PM

@DoubleDD "Royals fans shouldin’g have to endure growing up young stars to the MLB only to watch them be snatched up from the Yankees of the world."

You must be talking about the days of my youth--before yours--when KC fans had to suffer from the Athletics being a virtual farm team for the Yankees.

So, you think something is new about big money/big city teams having an advantage? You might want to watch the musical Damn Yankees to remind you that there wasn't any parity back then, either!

What do you bet Trae Young gets to the line 12 to 15 times Monday night? That will be because he drives constantly, not because of an instruction to the refs to even up for yesterday's game, but some will no doubt see causation.

@nuleafjhawk Don't forget the Keystone Kops.

Crimsonorblue22 said:

@mayjay I didn't see an instant replay of svi or dg that was thrown out of bounds at the end, did you? Hard to tell from my seat, crowd was mad!

Missed that, I think. They didn't do a very good job of showing the sequence that led Huggy to inviting his own early exit.

@HighEliteMajor I never have viewed reffing through rose-colored glasses, and I believe I have never suggested or complained that KU got screwed overall in a game by refs in the 52 years or so I have been watching. (But I have complained that they missed a call here or there. I think in general those go both ways. Trying to be objective, which as you know.....)

I do think a statistical disparity like yesterday is worth looking at by the ref supervisors, but I personally didn't see any great reason to be concerned--except for Huggins trying really hard to get that 2nd technical so he could cry "Persecution!"

Deuce Young: Slumping or Exposed? • Feb 18, 2018 06:11 PM

Bwag said:

Did you see his comments that Trace Young made yesterday about him being schemed against and defended like no other player anytime, anywhere has been?

Not quite, and his comments did not reference anthing other than this season.* And he is actually right: prepping for most teams involves prepping for the entire team. For OU, coaches have been keying on shutting Trae down. Anyone remember Sparky Anderson saying he was doing everything possible to make sure Brett didn't beat the Tigers? Didn't care if anyone else did, but it couldn't be Brett? That is the attitude coaches are taking on Trae, but OU has no all-stars in their supporting cast like the Royals did in 1980.

  • "I'm getting guarded like nobody else in the country is being guarded, scouted on like no one else in the country is," Young told reporters after the game. "It's a mystery coming out each and every game to try and figure out how a team is going to guard me and how I'm going to dictate how my team wins.

"It's a lot tougher for me to score now than it was in the beginning (of the season. It's a process. Right now, it's tough." (USAToday.com)

Svi and malik • Feb 18, 2018 06:01 PM

@Crimsonorblue22 Don't confuse the "narrative" with actual facts! Geez!

@HighEliteMajor I hate to break it to you, but you will never be confused with being objective on any issue of referees. You have your opinions, you bring out the evidence you think supports you, and you call it objectivity. But since you have previously posted your lengthy diatribes about refs, including your belief that most are incompetent, yours is still only a biased view to be taken with a grain of salt.

Others, including many who have watched CBB as long as or longer than you, may disagree. And we are not objective either.

Frankly, don't trust anyone who starts out with, "Look, I'm being honest here", and look for additional perspectives when someone claims that theirs is the only objective view.

Hosmer to Padres? • Feb 18, 2018 04:11 PM

@dylans Teams gave up the notion of team loyalty long ago when they created the reserve clause that made tying a player to a team not optional for the player, and later instituted the draft. The players just have caught up.

Deuce Young: Slumping or Exposed? • Feb 18, 2018 06:40 AM

@jaybate-1.0 Rest of team was exposed. He is just reverting to the mean as teams adjust.

@Crimsonorblue22 Konate's offensive goal tend was a big omission, too. And it was TWO hands, yet!

@Gunman He is going to have his own players wear white and foul Trae Young on 3 pt attempts so he can score some points on those shots finally.

So I think it's time for sure • Feb 18, 2018 06:36 AM

@Buster-1926 This is probably a challenging situation for HEM, who has previously worked hard to defend Los Chicken.
