I know almost nothing about Harvard. The one thing I've heard is that it is called "Where faith goes to die".
@wrwlumpy Very cool story - thanks for sharing.
@ralster I'm a terrible hypocrite - when Self loses really stupid games (you know the ones I'm talking about) I think Roy was the better coach. Most of the time though, I'm very, very happy with Self, although besides the obvious 2008 season, I still like Roy in the NCAA's.
@wissoxfan83 and he DID outscore a lot of them!
My boss's sister is a Harvard educated lawyer. ABSOLUTELY the dumbest person on the planet.
His sister is OK though...
@Statmachine Let's spot them 10 points to help out....
Please don't take this wrong, I'm as excited about CD as anyone and I think he's going to go great things for this team. Probably not program, but team.
BUT - just to put things in perspective.
Wilt's first varsity game as a Jayhawk - 52 pts, 31 rebounds.
@JRyman I believe all K-suck games are "officiated" by people with the last name of Calipari. Or Capone.
I watched the Ill St vs K-sucky game for as long as I could stand. I swear my blood pressure machine would have blown up if I'd tried to use it last night. It was so blatantly obvious that the ref's were making sure that K-suck would win, I thought I was going to puke.
K-SUCK - 46 free throw attempts. Yes - FORTY-SIX.
Ill. St - 10 free throw attempts.
Pure unadulterated BULLCRAP.
@drgnslayr It's still early and I'm coffee deprived, but I guess I don't understand the question. Why would you trade one championship for another? But I guess my answer would be no. To me, a championship is a championship.
I wasn't even born in 1952 (but close!), but that one means just as much to me as the 1988 and 2008 championships did, or this years championship will.
From a sentimental point of view, 1988 was the best for me. I was 30 years old, had followed the team intently (like I always have!) and the fact that we were a HUGE underdog to a D-bag coached team - it was pretty sweet.
But they're all good. They're ALL good.
Love me some Milt Newton!! I always enjoyed his fire and his smile and his spirit! I hope he enjoys great success in his new endeavor.
@DoubleDD Throw in Indiana and U-Conn and that's the total amount of teams in the history of the universe that have more NCAA Championships than KU. (and I'm not counting the Helms Athletic Foundation championships).
KU DOES win National Championships. Just not as many as we'd all like. And lots of people care. Along with all the glowing remarks about Duke, NC and Kentucky - people (not counting east coast media, but real people - lol) have HIGH regard for KU basketball.
How frickin cool is it that 17 years has passed since the greatest player (maybe athlete) to ever have played died, and we're still talking about him in hypothetical scenarios?
Fizzle in March, Baby - someone's going to do it every year.
BUT NO OTHER COLLEGE CAN CLAIM THAT WILT CHAMBERLAIN PLAYED FOR THEM. ROCK CHALK JAYHAWK....
@drgnslayr So - do you think there are any upsets in March?
At this point in time, I'd take the Conference Championship. Ten years from now, nobody (and I mean NOBODY) will remember who the 2015-2016 Final Four teams were, but EVERYBODY will remember that KU won (at least) 12 consecutive Conference Championships.
Happy Thanksgiving to all !
For those who are so inclined - Psalm 100 is a great Thanksgiving verse. In fact, it is called "A Psalm of Thanksgiving".
Safe travels to all who are on the road today and this weekend.
I'm not ready to crown WS the next MJ or Kobe or whomever it is that is universally idolized until he learns to not miss 4 straight free throws down the stretch when the game is potentially on the line.
Other than that, he's shown signs of greatness the past couple of games.
@ralster “Since we didn’t have time to learn Vandy’s set plays, we would play them on the basic principles we work on every day.”
I'm not a basketball guru like some of you folks here, just a huge (literally, after today...) but that's the philosophy I've always clung to and don't understand why everyone doesn't. Play YOUR game. Concentrate on YOUR team, know who does what well. I wouldn't spend much time learning the other teams set plays EVER.
Maybe that's why I'm not a D1 coach who's won 82% of his games, but it makes sense to me.
After all the hoopla - that Diallo is a bust.....
Why didn't you come up with this post WEEKS ago?? It seemed to have done the trick.
@SoftballDad2011 I'm not doubting you at all - I was just playin.
@SoftballDad2011 I think that IS correct. And Fran also invented the internet. lol
@BeddieKU23 With all due respect, I don't need to wait until the end of the year. All day, every day I would take Perry Ellis over any OAD. He means more to KU being here 4 years than any one and done will ever mean to that particular school. The OAD may go on to make millions and have fame, but he is likely not really associated with the college he went to (for a few months) and probably cares nothing about it. KU will be in Perry's blood the rest of his life, regardless of what his pro career turns out to be.
@drgnslayr If that's for real, it's one of the coolest things EVER!
@SoftballDad2011 Dude - if you're physically able to do it - DO IT. (I left the "just" off of there, don't want to advertise for the competition)
Life's WAY too short to not have fun when you get the chance. If you're short on money, borrow it, have a bake-sale or a carwash but just go. Please - you will never regret it.
@JRyman If you're right, I hope we don't hear from him again very soon! Until BB season is over....
Since I'm so often wrong about things, I want to break my arm patting myself on the back about Perry Ellis.
I TOLD YOU SO !!
Dude is a stud and ten years from now, when a poster asks who is your favorite all-time KU team, Perry Ellis will be right up towards the top.
@wissoxfan83 I'm just happy - ecstatic - that we got a big lead TWO GAMES IN A ROW and didn't blow it.
@ajvan It's a strange trend indeed. Shoot a lot of treys, beat the crap out of your opponent. Hmmmmm.
It'll all change when they start conference play. Automatic bench time for anybody shooting anything but a dunk or bunny.
@DoubleDD I don't think the NCAA even exists. It is a figment of someone's imagination. Have you ever met anyone that worked for the NCAA? Me neither. lol
@Texas-Hawk-10 Wait - they already have.
There used to be a sign on I-70 stating something like "Kansas State University - National Livestock Judging Champions 1991 & 1993"
I laughed every time I saw it, but I don't think it's there any more.
Just to let you know where I'm headed, my worst sports nightmare is that someday we are the first #1 seed to get knocked out by a #16.
@wrwlumpy Which one is which?
I love Bob, and I loved Max. The two of them together were radio broadcasting perfection.
Best of luck to whomever tries to fill Bob's shoes....
I agree that there should be a Bob Davis banner hung at AFH, he's a huge part of the KU family and folklore.
@bskeet I've read almost all of these posts concerning BS (and Roy) but what you said about the difference between the top 32 and the final 4 really got my attention. You're absolutely right. Heck, on any given day, any team in all of D-1 can beat another. I don't think that's just a cute saying that someone came up with, I really believe it.
Robert Morris.......
So, for today, you lifted my spirits. I'm not quite as ticked at BS as I was yesterday. (I will be again if we lose in the 1st or 2nd round this year) I'll bet if we scrutinized the big name programs they would ALL have several really nasty losses that they lamented over.
OK - I'm officially over it. BRING ON CHAMINADE!
@wrwlumpy Thanks for putting it in perspective!
@dylans Please don't clean up any Hawaiian spam - it's pretty tasty!
@Second-Prize "One positive you do not see a lot talked about, is guys we put in the league."
To me, that would be a positive if they were going into the league after 4 years, not after 1 or 2.
Big negative.
@SoftballDad2011 Wow - that's some great research - thank you!
The thing that sticks out to ME about those stats are that Roy's teams had two "bad" losses; UTEP in '92 and Rhode Island in '98. "Bad" meaning upsets. All tournament losses are bad....
Self's teams had five "bad" losses; Bucknell in'05, Bradley in '06, Northern Iowa in '10, Stanford in '14 and Wichita State (yes, f-ing WSU) in '15. A lot of us would throw in Michigan in '13, when we blew a 98 point lead (something like that), but it was a Regional Semifinal game.........same could be said for Roy's '97 loss to Arizona - Regional Semifinal game that we should have won, but "upset", I don't know....
I don't know what the deal is, but anyone that says that Self doesn't do something different in the tournament than in the regular season has got their head in the sand or is just not paying attention. I see the "play not to lose" mentality in many games, even in the regular season. How about just getting a lead and then keep doing what you've been doing to GET that lead?
@JayHawkFanToo Remember, I said not talking morals or scruples, just who can win some NC's. And please note, in no post since the MSU game have I suggested that BS needs to go, I just thought it would be interesting to talk about.
OK - put out your torches and hide the pitchforks, I'm not suggesting anything, just trying to pick your brains a little.
If Calipari were offered the KU job, there would be a certain percentage of fans and alum that would think "Hmmmm. That might be a good idea". (Not talking morals or scruples here, just who could win the most games. BIG games.)
If the Kentucky fans/alum were given the option of hiring Bill Self, here is the exact amount of them that would think it was a good idea.
ZERO
Tell me I'm wrong. Keep a straight face.
@DoubleDD Well, I'm ticked off too, but I think it's way too early to say that a future Hall of Fame coach has got to go. I do think he should see a shrink and figure out why he's so &^^%#(* stubborn and refuses to change his ways at times. Who was it that brought up the "insane" post a couple of days ago? I laughed that weird laugh, like "crap, I think they're right - he is insane". He has got to swallow his pride and learn how to utilize his players. I honestly don't give a crap about winning #12 and losing to Delphos Tech in the first round this year.
@KUSTEVE I really like the "old girfriend" analogy - it's a good one. I disagree about the current team(s) being more relevant though. My memory isn't that great, but I don't remember Roy's teams winning 30+ games during the season and getting buggy whipped in the first or second round of the NCAA's on a regular basis.. Roy's teams could get a big lead, expand on it, and win by 25-35 points on a regular basis. If Bill's teams get a 15 point lead, that means time to put on the brakes, take a Gatorade break and lose by 5.
@KUSTEVE Bill has won ONE NC. I haven't had time to look up numbers, but I would bet money that Roy's teams went deeper into the NCAA than Bill's every year but one. Roy was a couple of injuries, a couple of lousy calls and a couple of lucky breaks away from about 4 NC's at KU. He had far superior teams. Emphasis on TEAMS.
@jaybate-1.0 The .179 were BAD ones though.......
@JRyman "I’d like to add that Self should have a HUGE chip on his shoulder"
JUST ONCE, I'd like to see Self rip off his jacket, throw a chair across the court, toss his toupee into the stands - SOMETHING to indicate that he really gives a crap about KU. I'm tired of his laid back, cool guy, nothing bothers me bullshit attitude. The mascots show more emotion that he does and I'm tired of it.
SELF?
A few days or weeks or months ago, someone posted about who our most important player would be (or something to that effect). I chose Bill Self.
Nobody can blame a blown 13 point second half lead on anyone other than the coach.
@DoubleDD That does not make you a Bad KU fan.
That makes you a Logical KU fan.
@bskeet Thank the Good Lord I fell asleep and didn't have to witness the second half. But it doesn't surprise me, shouldn't surprise anyone. That's what Self's teams do - coast. Someone out there can come up with a black/white statistic, but we've given up HUGE leads all throughout his career here. He has no killer instinct, therefore his teams don't have it. We're a better team playing from behind the whole way. SAD.
@drgnslayr The whole race thing has always weirded me out. I just don't get it. ( I am white, by the way ). People have always called me one of two things: naive or optimistic. (especially during BB season) I prefer to think I'm a little of each.
I don't ever remember meeting someone and thinking "Oh - this person is a _____ fill in the blank". I truly feel like I just try to get to know the person, not the color of the person. So, it especially bothers me to hear people talk about what WE did to them 200 years ago. I didn't do nothin! My parents and grandparents didn't do nothin. At what point do we quit paying for the sins of our great/great/great grandfathers and be judged on who we are and how we act now? Like I said before, I am pretty naive, I like to think the best of people, but I can honestly say I've never seen racial discrimination. Maybe it's in the eye of the beholder?
Anyway, I know it exists and I hate that it exists. We all have the power to change it too. It's up to each one of us. Love your neighbor as yourself. Bingo. Discrimination ended.
