Since margin of victory is now a factor on the NET ranking, I did some math and was surprised our average MOV is 9.56/game. Since every team KU has played has been competitive at some point and several games have come down to the wire, I thought the average MOV was less.
I assume Coach Self encourages Garrett to actively look for his shot on offense and to take it. I love his defense, but can KU afford to give him 37 minutes of playing time when he's such a liability on the offensive end. 1 point today on 0/4 FG, 0/2 from 3, 4 rbs. 1 TO, but 3 assists, 4 steals and 1 block. The kid is everywhere, but I just wish he didn't set up in the corners on offense. I think he's better in the paint for rebounding.
9 and 0, but our margin of victory is invisible. RCJH
@DanR And we're missing his 6 dunks a game.
Dedric is so calm and unflappable. You'd think this was just a pickup game in the park. I love this guy.
What a game: KU vs. the refs and the Wildcats. RCJH
Vick has gone to sleep on offense. Thank goodness Dedric is playing this half. Come on Vick
Garrett is killing us on offense. Losing possession after possession. But, I like his D.
Jay Wright wants this win, badly. He's coaching his tail off.
Great plan, drive to the basket and pass to Garrett in the corner. Notice to Jayhawks: Garrett isn't a shooter. Stop passing to him.
Nova is only shooting 30%. We should have a bigger lead.
Only 3 jayhawks have scored. We've got to get the other guys going.
We've got to use our screens better. Most of our fouls today are on screens and charges. Too damn many offensive fouls.
Starting Vick makes a big difference.
Dotson's two fouls are really going to hurt our first half offense.
Another dogfight for our slow first half, down to the wire Jayhawks. Villanova came to play today. They don't look anything like they did against cross-town rival Penn.
Wow, Allen Fieldhouse is rocking.
Vick is starting today. Hopefully, he gets back to his scoring from 3.
Finals are over, so most students have left Lawrence for home. I sure hope those attending are going to make it rough on the Wildcats and the officials. Come on Bill, please start Vick.
It's just a few hours until game time and I'm wondering if Vick has behaved himself this week and will get back to playing. In the Penn loss on Tuesday, Villanova shot 50% (24/48) and was only 35% from 3 (9/26). Only guards Gillespie 3/4 and Booth 4/11 did any scoring from 3. Oh yeah, let's not foul Gillespie, he hit 10/11 on FTs.
I know all the focus is on Paschall, but Gillespie deserves attention too. Limit one of them and we should do well.
Also, get ready for an in-game infomecial on Villi's NBA players from last year. ESPN is very annoying with all its graphics, photos, etc. during games. I really just want to see the game, please.
Gonzaga/North Carolina should be fun Sat. 6 PM Central on ESPN2. I've been impressed with Gonzaga's athleticism. No more giant lumberjack centers dominating the Zags game.
Joe Buck: worst excuse for a beard I've seen.
So, Eric Berry and Tyreek Hill will play tonight. It will be interesting to see how well Berry plays after missing 14 months of games and practice. It's going to take a while to get the rust off, right? Let's get this party started.
@dylans I don't understand the tie breaking rules. I thought margin of victory was the key for teams that split head-to-head games during the season. Why do the Chiefs already own the tie breaker?
I feel like this is a must win for the Chiefs despite their fantastic 11-2 record. I can't believe the Chargers are hanging on the Chiefs' tail at 10-3, the second best record in the AFC. With the Texans and the Patriots both at 9-4, it's critical for the Chiefs to keep a lead. Big game tonight. Go Chiefs!
Try 715 Restaurant for more of an upscale dinner. It's at 7th and Mass. Jefferson's is the most popular sports bar on Mass, but my family likes 23rd Street Brewery, which is about a mile west of Iowa on 23rd street, Duh. There are many small places to eat on Mass that seem to change frequently, so we just wander along and try a new spot each time we visit Lawrence.
@mayjay Thanks, mayjay for the NET info. Texas Tech ranked ahead of us? We've played a great schedule. How the heck does TT get ranked ahead of us?
I haven't seen the NET rankings since the initial release. Is it updated weekly and posted somewhere? Now that Michigan St, Tennessee and our other victims are beating other teams, I assume our ranking will improve. Polls, rankings and even talking heads keeps me occupied between games; they don't actually matter, but I follow them anyway.
@Woodrow I'm not familiar with Fairchild. Do you have additional information about him, like position, etc.?
Down goes Gonzaga. Will Virginia jump us to be number 1 or will Gonzaga just stay there? Oh, yeah, Duke might just jump us too.
I like being the number 1 team anytime possible. Our team gets mentioned on every sports program in the country many times a day. But, we sure aren't playing like the number 1 team. So, I won't be upset when Duke or Virginia gets the spot, probably Duke.
Q started hot, but was MIA the rest of the game.
The very last shot (after the 3 attempt) was a two pointer anyway. Another close, maybe too close win.
Dotson doesn't use the screens on his drives. The defender is able to slip by too.
Good grief, Lightfoot is outscoring Dedrick.
If I told you Garrett would be leading KU in scoring with 7 minutes left in the game, would you guess we were losing?
Sitting Vick at the start of the last two games has really chilled Vick's shot; he's not in the offensive flow now.
Magee is 1/14 and 0/9 from 3 for 7 points. Welcome to Allen Fieldhouse Mr. Magee.
KU 7 TOs; Wofford 15 TOs.
OU had a nice win over ND.
KU is 1/10 from 3. Yikes. And Vick hasn't even attempted a 3. Wofford is 2/9, so both teams are struggling.
Chuck Moore is really struggling with his shot. Through this half he's 6/23 or 23%. From 3, Chuck's 2/14 or 14%. But, a shooter has to shoot his way out of a slump.
Wofford is shooting 1/7 from 3. So far so good
@BigBad Like Vick, I think Garrett is quick enough and athletic enough to execute the backdoor catch and dunk. But, currently on offense Garrett's job is to execute the offense, not wait along the baseline for the backdoor pass.
@BeddieKU23 I really think KJ Lawson is the answer when the opposing big stays on the perimeter.
I believe our guards are defending the 3 exactly the way Self mandates during practices. I say this because it's been the same defensive scheme on 3s for years: When the ball moves to the right side, our left side guard moves into the paint to rebound, leaving the offensive guard on the left side wide open. The reverse happens when the ball starts out on the left side. Then, when the ball swings around the perimeter and eventually gets to the left corner, our guard in the paint runs like an idiot from the lane to the open corner with his hand up. I'm sure Self expects the guard to move out of the lane when the ball starts to swing, but our guards never seem to make it. I think it's a rebounding issue as much as having an extra defender in the paint to stop drives. I can still see Frank Mason skying for the rebound on missed 3s from the opposite side. Even when the Cagins and Cardinal players were hitting their 3s, the defense stayed the same. I can't understand why we don't put a defender in man coverage on a hot outside shooter. My wife is very tired of me yelling at the flat screen to play man coverage on the hot shooter. Oh well, somehow we are 6-0 despite very bad 3 point defense. But, I don't expect our defensive scheme to change at all.
I saw a report in Kansas that Seth Littrell, North Texas's coach was likely to be the next KState coach.
@HawkChamp Dotson is 5/10 from 3 in 195 minutes, while Grimes is 9/22 in 155 minutes and Chuck Moore is 2/12 in 115 minutes. But, 6 of Grimes 9 makes came against Mich. St. So, Grimes has only made three 3s in the last 5 games and has seen his playing time drastically reduced. Dotson just isn't shooting enough 3s. He was 3/5 from 3 against Mich. St. KU needs a second 3 point threat on the court because all the perimeter D is going to be on Vick going forward.
@JayHawkFanToo Do you think any KU representative is actively recruiting? As far as I know, only Miles is employed by KU Football. We need a QB, defensive linemen, linebackers, wide receivers and on and on. If I was Coach Miles, I would have already announced the retention of Tony Hull and had him out recruiting.
I sure wish Coach Miles had spent Saturday afternoon hiring top quality assistant coaches and recruiting players instead of hanging around Allen Fieldhouse. Is anyone else surprised by the lack of announcements of coaches and recruits by this time? He's likely known since Long was hired last summer that he was going to be KU's next coach. On the positive side, he's very young looking for 65. 10-15 years younger by looks.
I have a premonition that Kareem Hunt will be signed by the Oakland Raiders in the off season. He's way to good to be out of football long. He's only 23 and should have several more years of great runs still to come. I just don't look forward to the Chiefs playing against him and the story of his release being repeated and repeated.
