@Kcmatt7 Well good, you're not totally heartless!
@Kcmatt7 White Sox have the 3rd ranked farm system in the majors and boatloads of money to spend. They're following the blueprint of the Astros and I hate to say, Cubs. Remember the Astros lost over 100 games 3 years in a row during their rebuild.
@JayHawkFanToo We're not waiting another 88 years! I need more than one WS in my lifetime.
@JayHawkFanToo No you wait longer because yours was in 2015, mine was in 2005.
@Kcmatt7 Hi Matt, I know we can't save everyone. Can you imagine telling someone in great need that however? I can't.
I never said let everyone in, however, by letting in people in danger in other places is just and humane. This country has plenty of land for growth. There's room for more. If you don't believe me look at China! 1.3 billion people crammed into a country the same size as our 48 contiguous states. We have room for a billion more people!
Another interesting aspect on the immigration issue is how many unfilled jobs there are in some industries now. My Cuz in law has a major landscaping company in Pittsburgh, PA, not Kansas! Long tradition there, highly respected in the community for their work. He's had to dedicate an employee just to hiring because so many people who would fill his positions have been deported. This is true all over the bread basket. Certain manufacturing jobs are going unfilled partially because of anti immigration policies.
@JayHawkFanToo Just a year after the White Sox' next!
Good post on the media. I generally have chafed for 30 years over the biased media. However, media has evolved to where the internet is now mainstream media. You can get whatever news and commentary there that you want. And it goes without saying you can find whatever you want to support your particular view point.
It always cracks me up when you read on FB some shared post that starts out, "The media won't report this" and then it goes on to report on some supposedly damaging story about a politician who breaks the mold on what they're supposed to be doing. I respond to that with "how did you learn about it then if the media didn't report it?"
You said "The KC Star will run front page stories on immigrants, their sob stories" You accuse the media of bias, but there's a lot of bias right in that statement, isn't there? I worked with a lot of immigrants from Central America when I was living in Baton Rouge. These were not sob stories in my view. These were kids escaping the most extreme violence on earth. Read about San Pedro Sula, Honduras someday. Most violent large city on the planet. I'll tell you then about two girls in my classroom who had to get out of there. They were great young ladies, didn't speak any English, but worked hard in class every day. But some people will cheer when or if they get deported. That would be a sob story. I don't know if they were here legally or not. They didn't need to be there, in Honduras.
Trump unfortunately gives the MSM plenty of ammo in their battles against him. His outlandish statements, immoralities, etc sway Americans away from his accomplishments which you started talking about in your original post.
Self has won the league 2 or 3 times with a whole new starting 5. That tells you about him and about the other coaches.
10 Self - Only won 1 title at school that should win every year.
9 Smart Can't be too good to because Texas don't care 'bout no basketball.
8 Kruger Coached at a bunch of schools, can't be good.
7 Boynton Which team does he coach for again?
6 Prohm Got to give him some credit for coaching in the middle of a 50,000 square mile corn field.
5 Huggins He really rocks those outfits!
4 Beard Give him credit for even being able to find Lubbock.
3 Scott (drew) Rebranding by changing his name to Drew Scott is going to move him to the upper echelons of coaches.
2 Dixon He coached at the school (Pitt) where my Mom played college basketball. Nuff said.
1 Weber I have fresh memories of the delicious steaks I grilled tonight on my Weber grill. You didn't think I'd rank him #1 because of his coaching, did you?
Just Mercy by Brian Stephenson is a startling book about the inequities in capital murder cases in Alabama. Even among criminals there's white privilege.
Thanks for the break from the summer doldrums!
White privilege is misunderstood in my view. On the one hand Obama proves a black man can be elected to the highest office. That was a great event for many of my older African American friends. But a black woman, a few heartbeats from the presidency in Condeleeza Wright gets stopped in a Texas airport walking with the presidential party a few years back by some dolt who assumed she didn't belong with Bush because of her skin color.
Schools have been desegregated yet they're still obscenely segregated, most often by race, but sometimes by class as well. If you're not sure how this matters, a simple tour of facilities would suffice. Visit the athletic complex in your average suburban HS and then find the athletic complex, if it exists, in the underserved communities. The contrast is striking. I've seen light polls erupt in flames, and a single bulb explode and fall into the stands with spectators. The brightness of stadium lights, soccer pitches with large mudholes vs. playing on turf fields. Inside the hallways, I had 10 principals in 11 years. I'll let you guess which type of school that was. Teacher turnover leads to despair among poor students. Not happening out in the whiter areas generally. This is the issue I care most about.
The protest you mentioned today in Chicago. It's way more about the economic disparity between Chicago's north side and it's south and west side. You have to understand something about the evils of redlining which created segregated neighborhoods. When someone is prevented the ability to own a home in a decent neighborhood several things happen. There's a divide between classes and races. Owning property is a way families develop a legacy for children that someday they can own or benefit from. Simply put, it creates wealth of varying degrees.
Read the book Evicted. This is a great expose on a sometimes necessary but oftentimes evil practice that obviously impacts the underserved in our cities and suburbs.
National anthem? Sorry, but some of the stuff I've read here bothers me. Just because the rich athlete didn't suffer the injustice doesn't mean they shouldn't protest does it? By that logic no rich, successful people can protest, speak out, etc. Totally harmless but effective protest. I thought our country stood for that.
A little bit of KU here. They predict we win the Big12, and that Vick is an important player.
Annoyingly they make predictions about individuals without identifying the team they play for. For example they predict Konate will block 3.5 shots per game. If we didn't play them 2-3 times a year I'd have no clue who he plays for. I know it's the age of the internet, so these things can be quickly googled, but who writes like that?
They like Kentucky for winning it all.
@KirkIsMyHinrich I agree. I never looked at the link, so I didn't realize that our lineup was missing the names it was missing. But the other schools probably could say the same things too about who is included in their lineup.
I'm touched by violence too often in my line of work. It hits close to home sometimes. Last 6 months have been particularly rough. Hang in there.
@JayHawkFanToo Ha, I didn't even look at the rosters, but I'm sure it was not to be for the Badgers against all those Bruins.
Our internet has been out for three days so I didn't see this. I've got KU and Wisconsin in the final!
At first I thought you were telling the same story of a friend who lives near Lawrence. Several nights ago a chase ended up in her mom's soybean field, near Eudora I think.
The draft was the Sox' downfall for many years too. Sounds like most of you agree they have been poor in that area.
@Jayballer73, the Royals used to do a good job but that was a long time ago. They had a long period of sustained success. Baseball has changed a ton since then.
This is not a gloating post. I watched Sox-Royals last night and saw two teams on the field that have fewer wins combined than 4 AL teams. Now the Sox have been scuffling since 2012, right about the time the Royals began their fabulous run.
Does this reveal how hard it is for small market teams to maintain their success? Or is it just a matter of putting all their eggs in one basket for the ultimate prize which they accomplished?
Looking at the box score for game 5 that year they won they played 4 guys who played last night. Looking at their pitching staff from that season, there aren't many pieces left either.
So what happened to the Royals?
I like Jaybate. Don't read all his stuff, classic, scroll past, but as a creative thinker myself, his stuff is fun to read.
@Bwag I think that goes with the territory in SEC country because living for a decade in LSU territory made me think they think they're the top school in everything.
Does he still need to make the team? Is this money guaranteed?
I don't know jayballer73, most people here know I love Badger football and basketball, but I really try not to annoy/antagonize/frustrate other posters by posting much about it.
When you start a post by calling people haters, it's really pretty childish and is bound to get people riled up.
Again, for someone wanting peace on this board, you got some people riled up again.
I too, hate the Yankees. I'm a baseball fan first and foremost and really despise everything they stand for. I despise the east coast treatment, the media obsession over this team at the expense of every team besides the Red Sox whom I also loathe.
Some are questioning the topic. General discussion means anything I agree. But maybe if you broached the subject by saying do ya'll think Machado might go to the Yankees then people would discuss it without the negativity. But you came in with your guns drawn and look what happens.
Missed this conversation unfortunately, but I always enjoy hearing about peoples experiences with other places. We made the Pacific Northwest once and it was memorable. Dad talked his way up to the bridge of a huge ferry we were on from Vancouver Island to somewhere near Deception Pass. Captain looked at me and asked if I wanted to drive. I said sure. So me, a 15 year old piloted that ferry for nearly an hour. Well before the days of homeland security of course.
@dylans Haha! You get an A-.
You said, "If your Naïve enough to think Coach’s don’t use profanity - then your living under a rock - you don’t think NFL Coach’s don’t get physical? - mercy what world you live it?"
That's stirring the pot sir. It's just ironic to me since your post from a few days ago.
Wow. The other day someone was posting about the fighting here and then they come unglued over @justanotherfan 's good question.
@BShark No, I don't do twitter.
I've got an idea. There's a coach who will be successful at KU. His name is Mark Mangino.
What's this NBA everyone is talking about?
My well traveled life has led to a new twist. We now live in Indiana! We are as close to Illinois and it's financial mess as possible. We're living a 5 minute walk to a beautiful park on Lake Michigan. Sox park is 20 minutes away which is a miracle. Living near the hoops hotbed of Gary and Hammond, and Chicago's south side, like Simeon HS will be an added bonus.
Don't worry, my allegiance to the Jayhawks (or Badgers) will not switch sides.
Any other Hoosier Jayhawks here?
None of us really know how this will turn out. For all the naysayers, Bielema from my Badger fan perspective was a big loss. No rose bowls since, and mediocrity in the Big 10 championship game has become our reputation. Long's basketball resume at Arkansas is nothing to brag about. Zenger's was something to brag about but TV contracts were not. I will wait and see. Maintain hoops of course, and iboost football is what we'd all like to see I think. And personally, I'd like a move to the Big10, make a trade for Nebraska!
Vick makes me much more confident. We have a lot of new pieces to the puzzle this year and we're just not sure how it's all going to work together. Some of the comments I've seen here have been Dedric was very unathletic, Charlie Moore isn't good enough, the freshmen might just be freshmen, Desousa might not play, etc.
Of course Bill Self has a great track record of taking new starting lineups to great heights.
I think they're going undefeated every year. Never been right, but the year I am right, I'll have bragging rights forever here, I'll be the first inductee into the Bucketeer HOF which is a step above a PHOF. Just write something coherent and @jaybate-1-0 hands out a PHOF!
@Crimsonorblue22 I agree since what's the point of posting an article we can't read?
@wrwlumpy Funny camera angle. Makes Svi look like a 85 year old skinny man.
I agree with @Kcmatt7 and @JayHawkFanToo . He's 19 years old, going to be set for life. Are they going to be mad at Fred Hoiberg next because the whole team won't revolve around him? These people are low lifes. Their sons team adds a player after the fact that will make them even better and they complain about it. They probably don't make it as far as they do without Bagley, but they would have been happy because Wendell would have been the man, but actually with a senior star like Allen he wouldn't have been the star anyways.
@mayjay So if it did fly over, would it at least dump its' 'cargo' over Missouri, specifically Columbia?
-
Will this finally be the year with little NCAA drama? If it is will some still claim the NCAA is out to get us?
-
Are we going to lose 3 true home games again? In one season, ever?
-
When will people end the childish argument about Lebron or MJ being the greatest and acknowledge that Wilt is actually the greatest?
-
Which most recent KU draftee will make a team?
-
Who will be our greatest threat to pretend to end our 14 in a row streak?
-
If a Jayhawk was a real bird would it fly around Missouri?
Need our cockles warmed? Come on man, I always thought this was a family friendly page!
That was one of the more amazing games in recent memory. Really fun to watch that comeback. Thanks for sharing.
@Kcmatt7 The White Sox just had 20 guys play in minor league all star games. And the White Sox have a very low payroll with a ton of money to spend on next years stellar free agent class. I'm still optimistic the rebuild is going to be successful. I am tired of the losing for sure.
@Kcmatt7 they are trying to win. Their minor league is loaded and will be very competitive in 2 years or so.
@BeddieKU23 It didn't stop Ayton from going 1st. I'm still floored he was allowed to finish the season. Of course Ayton's talent exceeds Prestons by quite a bit.
@dylans I see, it was the overall trend. This year in particular they've been very good having the best record in the NL for a while.
@justanotherfan I love talking about this stuff and I would add the Sox to your performing compared to market size and make them an underperforming to market size.
Although we won a world series, and were competitive for two straight decades, attendance is a struggle. The park isn't that hard to get to, but the stadium sucks. The owners are kind of cheap, and of course, the Cubs attract a lot of attention. It's partially a class thing because the south side is working class and has a reputation of being dangerous, while the north side is yuppie town.
@dylans Not sure why you say Milwaukee sucks. They've had a decent run the last few years and draw pretty well.
@HighEliteMajor It's interesting because the other day I had similar thoughts and was going to create a thread like it. Since I was in a negative mood at the time I also thought who might make our most disappointing team. Some of those names might crossover to the all knucklehead team, but some were just disappointing. Brannen Greene makes both lists, but Cheick makes just the disappointing list in my view.
Kentucky got one of those eligible now grad transfers from Stanford. He's an all Pac12 performer. ESPN now has Kentucky in their 1st spot in their early top 25.
Too bad he didn't pitch for some east coast team, he'd be a nationally known superstar. From Sox perspective he won't be missed in our division but what a great pitcher he's been.
I said it weeks ago. I'd like him back. Doesn't mean he's coming back. But I'll enjoy the show. He's fun to watch.
@nwhawkfan Are those Jaychickens in it?
