Snake bite • Jun 10, 2018 09:30 PM

Golfer in South Dakota killed by rattler just the other day. I wish this was a dumb golf joke. It's not. True story.

We'd have a snake about once a year in Louisiana. Nearly stepped on the devils while out running, not once, but 3 times. Nearly made me give up running.

Keegan Gushing Over McCormack • Jun 07, 2018 02:15 AM

@BShark The reason I included Connor (and I didn't mull over this list too long!) was we were quite giddy with the prospect of him coming with his supposedly great shooting. We thought we were getting another Jeff Boschee!

Keegan Gushing Over McCormack • Jun 06, 2018 09:25 PM

@HighEliteMajor I've got a little bit of Missouri in me I guess because i say 'show me' with the highly touted freshmen of the last half decade. I did with Joel (he did) Wigs (he mostly kind of did), BMac, (he did), JJ (he mostly did), Cheick (he didn't), Oubre (he is now) Cliff (he didn't), Selden, (he finally did), Perry (he did), Frankamp (he didn't) Bragg (he didn't).

I certainly hope Keegan is right for the first time since last century. I want to see a KU freshman take the country by storm, to be the headliner, to help us win the whole darn thing for a change.

Keegan Gushing Over McCormack • Jun 06, 2018 12:11 PM

Yeah, Keegan gushing over someone/something seems to be the kiss of death.

@JayHawkFanToo When/where do we play Nova?

Lagerald Vick: The Pool Is Closed • Jun 04, 2018 10:34 PM

I know there was a lot of ugliness with the kid, but I'll remember his amazing athleticism and appreciate what he gave to the program.

@BShark Those rankings of mine were thoroughly researched. And if we get Vick back, which I hope we do because I love seeing hi flying alley oops, I'll have to do some more research and revise them.

I also predicted the all league teams.

KU starting 5 All first team Big12

KU bench All 2nd team Big12

I ranked them too. KU#1 TTWVKSTBUOUOSUTCUISU #2

It took me longer to read your posts Jaybate than the length of the concerts you wrote about!

Draft Declarations Thread • Jun 02, 2018 11:28 AM

He must have some significant baggage to not be wanted back if that is true.

Draft Declarations Thread • Jun 02, 2018 03:48 AM

@FarmerJayhawk He's not eligible to return if he signed with an agent which I believe he did. I think initially he didn't. I hate to be pessimistic, but I'm afraid he's another early entry casualty who obviously has almost no future in the NBA.

@BShark Thanks!

@Crimsonorblue22 Actually, yes! Supposed to be the last day of school, the ultimate birthday gift! But a snow day means we've got to go back Monday. Oh woe is me!

@Crimsonorblue22 Not sure how we can see anyone on our team is a fine young man without getting to know them first, or at the very least letting their character be revealed after 4 years on campus. Of course you pay attention more than I do since you're nearby (I assume). I don't really take the time to get to know the players.

One thing I do know after watching highlights. Draymond Green is not a fine young man. I'm tired of his act but he is a good ballplayer.

@drgnslayr I don't often disagree with you but I'm not sure what you mean he adds character. He potentially won't play for us at all because of the shoe payment thing. Maybe lack of character is the wrong word and I should blame his being naive?

@nuleafjhawk That's a list you can be proud of! And I'm sure that 6 year old was a punk.

@justanotherfan Not much, I make 54 tomorrow!

By the way people are talking here like it's a foregone conclusion that Silvio is returning. No one knows anything about this, right? Or did I miss something? I just read that @Crimsonorblue22 had asked the same question.

“Malcolm Gladwell, in his 2008 best selling book Outliers: The Story of Success, makes the point crystal clear. Yes, there are free throw shooters who have more natural talent to begin with, however, the fact is that the really great elite free throw shooters work much, much harder than all the others.

The idea, that excellence at performing a complex task requires a minimum level of practice, surfaces again and again in studies of expertise. In fact, researchers have settled on what they believe is the magic number for true expertise: 10,000 hours.”

I've probably golfed 10,000 hours maybe, and expertise and golf do not go together for me!

Doke will be broke for another year. Our team will be no joke and we will not choke as he hones his stroke. The nation is woke to the threat of Doke and his fellow bloaks. Poke me, I'm dreaming.

What's your greatest sports moments? • May 30, 2018 05:30 PM

@Barney I remember sitting in the stands watching us play OSU and their headliner RB named Thurman Thomas. Their freshman 2nd stringer that day was Sanders and I remember thinking I think this guy is better than Thomas.

What's your greatest sports moments? • May 30, 2018 12:52 PM

@jaybate-1.0 I was born just a tad too late to have seen him even as a pro. His career cut short, possibly because of the wear and tear on the knees from all those moves you described, probably keeps his name off of some peoples all time lists. Sad to hear about his dementia as well.

What's your greatest sports moments? • May 30, 2018 11:43 AM

@jaybate-1.0 No roids for Denny, but he did have a higher mound to pitch off of and baseball needed to bring some offense back so they lower the mound.

For me, Tom Seaver was the best I've seen. He still remains my all time favorite. My grade school years were near NYC so i got to go to some Mets games.

What's your greatest sports moments? • May 29, 2018 09:28 PM

@jaybate-1.0 Which record of McClains? His baseball record or his criminal record?

Wow, quite a list! Seeing Gale Sayers, Epic!

The 2nd best part of Gibsons 88 homer was the announcer, scully or Jack Buck? I think, saying nothing for about a minute.

What's your greatest sports moments? • May 29, 2018 07:14 PM

Summer doldrums. Time to generate a little convo. Tell us what you got.

What sports memories do you dwell on?

No judging here.

  1. For me, this is a tough one, but "my NCAA championship" of 1988 ranks #1. Senior year at KU, watched most of every home game in person for 3 years. What a great memory.

  2. White Sox 2005. Yes ESPN, the Sox did win the World Series. I seriously never thought that it would happen. And we got ours before the Cubs did which made it sweeter.

  3. All of my kids sports moments collectively. I didn't contribute much athletically to the gene pool so their accomplishments aren't great. But A lot of games and fun times.

  4. Bears 1986. Arguably the greatest team in history....except they couldn't figure out how to win again.

  5. KU 2008. Until the histrionics of Nova/UNC several years ago, the first buzzer beating finals 3 pointer ever, and it was us. The game was dreadful before that.

  6. 1983 White Sox division clincher. In person, stormed the field afterwards.

  7. 2012 NC game. Only on here because I was able to attend the game thanks to our old friend Brooksmd.

  8. 1st baseball game in old, old Yankee Stadium. 1972 Yanks vs. the Royals. Center field bleachers. Pure magic.

  9. KU Orange Bowl winner. See my #2 above in moments I never thought I'd see.

Can't really come up with a 10th since the 9th was kind of stretch, so what you got?

Another big legal battle for the NCAA • May 29, 2018 04:52 PM

I wouldn't care if football went away. I've basically stopped watching the NFL except for the Super Bowl, although I still get into the college game. I do get disgusted with the dirty play particularly the leading with the helmet thing.

Is Bill Self a Corrupt Coach? • May 24, 2018 01:16 PM

Type into Google "Is Kansas basketball dirty". There's a lot of people out there that believe we are to some degree.

Is Bill Self the Cleanest Coach in D1? • May 24, 2018 03:30 AM

@Lulufulu Show me where I said he is dirty, and if so then I will get the frogs out. And as much as @BShark is on here I'm convinced he's a genuine KU fan. I'm sorry that someone questioning our team objectively has offended you.

And what Duke and UK do has nothing to do with this discussion. We're not discussing whether they're dirty.

@Approxinfinity • May 23, 2018 03:19 AM

No Lopez hasn't cooled off. 1 bad start really. Giolito is going to be good too I think, as long as I don't go to the games he pitches. His two worst starts as a pro are starts where I've been in the stands! Too bad about Eaton. Turning out to be a pretty lopsided trade especially if he can't stay healthy.

@Approxinfinity • May 22, 2018 05:05 PM

Some Nationals dude smokes a 3 run dinger on the first MLB pitch of his career last night? Wow! Is he a top prospect?

Is Bill Self a Corrupt Coach? • May 22, 2018 04:43 PM

@JayHawkFanToo Yes, I've looked at Kentucky and Dukes long stacks and have wondered too. Ultimately I've had to conclude that since nothing has ever happened to those coaches/programs that it probably means they're clean or have been part of this same shoe payment thing that we're entangled with. But from your post you don't think they are....maybe. How is that different from the guy from Bradley I met?

I do like the fact that we're called victims here, but I don't like that Billy Preston is driving a late model car and that if he hadn't run into that curb we might not have said anything about it. Did Bill Self know about the car? How could he not know about it? Does this means that he looked the other way until his hand was forced and he couldn't look the other way? Possibly. And if the answer is yes, then there's some shade on him and the program.

But we don't know a lot of facts I agree. I don't want to believe HCBS is corrupt, even a little corrupt. I want to answer yes to @jaybate-1-0's question "Is Bill Self the cleanest coach in America?"

...but...nothing on the Adidas or De Sousa headlines indicates or even hints of any involvement by Coach Self. To take those headlines and from there determine Coach Self is dirty is a ridiculous stretch.

A ridiculous stretch? I'm certainly not going back in the archives, but how many times here on these pages have we dumped on Cal/K/etc. for all kinds of crap in recent years? I'm not going to say you have said anything, because I don't know, but if I had to bet the 2 dollars in my wallet on it, I'd bet you've called Cal and K dirty too.

Zenger Fired • May 21, 2018 07:42 PM

Might this mean you all will be able to watch the first 5 or 6 games of the year on TV like all of us OUTSIDE of the state of Kansas can do? I hope for ya'lls sake that's one of the benefits of this.

Is Bill Self a Corrupt Coach? • May 21, 2018 11:50 AM

@JayHawkFanToo I presume he was referring to the very well publicized headlines of Adidas and presumably Desousa and getting money and such. So it's a little more than I heard it on the internet type of stuff.

I'm not saying I agree with him either @approxinfinity. It just caused me to step back and ask what if?

Is Bill Self a Corrupt Coach? • May 21, 2018 02:35 AM

@kjayhawks Your every one is guilty defense (which I agree with more or less by the way) is no excuse for our coach having some clouds, if he does have some clouds.

@jaybate-1-0 You've got to trust my judgment on this man. It was just a conversation. He was speaking as a former D1 athlete pretty disgusted by where our favorite sport is going. He has genuine opinions that made me step back from my crimson and blue colored glasses. By the way, my brilliant father went to Bradley so I do take some stock in what people from Bradley say!

Is Bill Self a Corrupt Coach? • May 20, 2018 09:07 PM

@JayHawkFanToo Why do you think this random stranger who follows sports would think it then?

When I saw him in person I don't recall thinking he was exceptionally short.

Is Bill Self a Corrupt Coach? • May 20, 2018 07:13 PM

I had an interesting conversation last night at a baseball game with a former basketball player who played at Bradley in the late 70's. He saw my KU hat and said something to the effect that KU and Self are among America's most corrupt NCAA programs and coaches.
I told him to shut up and then said you must be a Missouri grad.

It was very clear that in this mind that despite Bill Self's clean image
he really is pretty corrupt coach.

I didn't want to argue with the man who was ushering at this game. He did acknowledge that the sport in general is looking really bad right now and we kind of let it go at that.

I tend to view our team several degrees from the middle of objectivity. I've enjoyed them avidly for 30+ years. I've always approved of our teams coaches, with a few shake my head moments but generally nothing to test my true allegiance.

In my view, our worst misdeeds have been finding some kids who have trouble adjusting to the limelight like JJ, Preston, Cliff, etc. Nothing we ever really had much to do with, just had kids who threw some shade on the program but whom we knew really didn't do anything with the knowledge or blessing of the coaching staff.

So what's your view of Bill Self? Has he looked the other way on major stuff? Did he encourage the brewing scandal by banking on his good reputation? Has he been tainted? Should KU be looking to clean house?

I know in my view his star has been waning. I'm hoping we survive this without probation or worse. I'm starting to look at young coaching prospects who will be our next HOF coach. But I'm also hoping that the KU was a victim scenario is really true and we increase the scrutiny of our recruits.

Rain dance, please! • May 18, 2018 02:17 PM

@dylans That's interesting info that I know little about. I assume a combination of lower snowpack in the Rockies and increased drawing out of the aquifer is leading to its depletion?

Rain dance, please! • May 17, 2018 04:53 PM

Wow, 1" since October? That's a serious drought even for western Kansas. For some reason droughts play well in the news in moist places like the SE or more populated Texas, but places like Kansas/Nebraska/Oklahoma, who cares I guess is their attitude even though it's a major agricultural region.

I'm guessing the Ogallala isn't used by you for irrigation? I don't know that much about agriculture so I'd be curious to know.

my life long team • May 11, 2018 07:43 PM

@JayHawkFanToo is right @jayballer73 Yes underachieved. The Cubs, White Sox, Diamondbacks, Marlins, Royals, Astros, Angels, and Phillies have won as many world series since the turn of the century as the money laden, buy every big FA every year, on ESPN/FOX/MLBTV every night Yankees! That is underachieving. That team really should be winning about every three years or so with all their advantages!

And PS, it's always i before e except after C!
