@tis4tim Nice!
@chriz I don't know. I don't think he's won the nobel prize for basketball. I don't think he's won the Oscar for best lead basketball player. Same with an emmy,
Darn, someone beat me to it!
He's won so many awards each of us has had a chance to post one!
I think my bracket is busted.
@truehawk93 Some of our players were thugs this year too.
Kind of late to the action here, but it seemed like the officials were trying to help USC at the end of that game. A very suspicious offensive foul, some no calls when USC appeared to be trying to hack Gonzaga.
That being said, happy for Gonzaga. Pretty impressive what they've done.
I told my wife I'm on an ad free website (don't get any ideas!) that I visit about 367 days a year so I should probably kick in our Friday date night money. The couch worked fine for my sleep so don't worry.
I tried to donate 1,000,000 but it wouldn't let me. Oh well, I guess I'll kick in a few bucks. Thanks Mr. Approxinfinity!
@wrwlumpy I don't know the history of AFH and it's different configurations, but lower level of seats with a 2nd deck made me wonder if it really was AFH. And the elevated floor made me think the same. Notice the first row spectators are seated below floor level. And that's back in the day when we men wore real shorts, not the floods they sell to us today.
And look at those legs and arms on OR, wow!
@dylans Wait a year....at least!
@JayHawkFanToo Nothing wrong with a kid who's still in HS dreaming big in my opinion! But I did just read what you said about him taking someone's number, so that's not too cool.
Despite the obvious absence I'm actually intrigued by this final 4. All the new blood in it makes it fairly compelling.
I think KU is #1
@kjayhawks Hard to quantify the impact of his, Braggs and Vicks issues on the team. I never heard anything like it created dissent or disunity, but I'm sure Bill Self would have rather not had to deal with these things.
@betterfireE I've got a wait and see attitude on the loaded next year idea.
How many has he won now? Maybe the NCAA needs to try to lump their awards into one award like college football. The prestige of winning one or even several awards wanes when there's not a recognizable big award to win. I know the Naismith is the biggest, but it still doesn't carry the prestige of a Heismann trophy. That being said, it's awesome that lil Frank Mason is winning so many of these awards.
@Kcmatt7 With a healthy Doke are we still playing?
@BigBad and @Kcmatt7 I was operating under the assumption if Josh comes then Selden leaves. I can't see a scenario where we'd have had both, but that scenario is tantalizing! I think we're playing til the final buzzer in Phoenix if we had both. We'd be undefeated champions if we had both. Uh, nix, that, we still don't win in Morgantown!
@Blown I'm sorry, 'original DOS'? I assume that's a computer term? I'm on about a 10 year computer here at work.
Post accidentally posted before I finished. Now it's complete!
Wayne left a year ago. Wayne had a solid junior year. Don't know how to interpret advanced stats like player efficiency, etc, so I won't go there. Maybe that sheds some more light on this topic that would be interesting to hear.
I'm going to operate on the assumption Wayne left because we were going after JJ vigorously and he saw his role diminishing. So if Wayne stays because JJ signed somewhere else then we'd have him starting instead of JJ. Wayne, and this is another assumption, improves his statistics as he did each of his previous two seasons improves to near JJ levels of scoring. For what it's worth Wayne had these stats:
Wayne Josh
13.8 pts, 16.3
3.4 RB's, 7.4
2.6 Assts, 3.0
Shot ,392 on 3's, 37.8
61% on FT's (yikes!), 56.6 (yikes!)
Averaged 2 fouls 3 fouls
.7 steals and .3 blocks per games 1.7 steals, 1.3 blocks
0 legal issues Several legal issues
Hope that chart formats well.
So the question is, if JJ doesn't come and Wayne stays, where are we? Are we still playing? We probably were the best team a year ago with Wayne. Would his numbers have improved to match JJ's? If so is that enough to put us over the top? I guess in hindsight, it'd be nice to have found out.
The legal issues is hard to quantify the impact on the team. It was a distraction. It painted our team in a negative light. Wayne, as I recall played Scott free for three years, was a model citizen I believe.
I know this is an unanswerable question, but goodness, it's the offseason already, we need to talk about something!
@FarNrthJHwk You're new here, I'm the grammar cop! I mete out fines, sentences, etc. The worst was I forced someone once to watch a whole season of Missouri basketball.
By the way, I'm just a little nosy, and I was a geography major at KU, so how far north are you?
@FarNrthJHwk Might want to edit that post :smiley:
@dylans No, she didn't want to do one, never has.
@betterfireE The way our offense was operating during that game when the Graham foul occurred there's not guarantee we come back and win that game. I think we were down 3 at the time. That call, cost us a 50/50 chance of winning that game. Didn't cost us the game.
@Blown I've got a wife who watches very little basketball too. We shoulda chosen better I guess!
@BShark Is that Kim Anderson?
@BigBad What was the ranking of the Oregon players?
It's funny how FF is an arbitrary accomplishment that becomes a measure of success. When I was a kid growing up in Illinois going downstate was the goal in basketball. To accomplish that you had to make the Elite 8. If you did that, you had accomplished a lot and everything was judged on that, almost like winning it all was just gravy.
Making the Elite 8 in the NCAA tournament is a nice accomplishment and when we lose in the Elite 8, we are losing to a team that has made the Final 4. Losing in the Elite 8 sucks, but it doesn't suck in a Bucknell or Bradley kind of way, or even in a Northern Iowa kind of way. It means we won three tourney games, pretty exciting, but of course we want to win 6 games each March, not 3.
It's interesting that Jay Wright has had a much worse March record than Bill Self, but right now he is on the list of really good coaches because he won the darn thing last year. Then he comes back this year and goes right back to form with an upset loss, a very regular occurrence in Philly for his teams.
And totally unrelated, but if UNC doesn't pull that one out yesterday then we'd have to endure the awful reality of TWO SEC teams in the FF.
Actually I did burn my couch. Felt kind of good.
How about just like in 2003 when we looked like world beaters in blowing out Marquette and then laid an egg on Monday that we suffered the same this weekend? Purdue was so easy that it made us complacent. That's the only explanation I got.
Your explanation could make sense too. I assume the team didn't go back to Lawrence after Thursdays game. They probably just sat around bored, practicing a bit. And then fan after fan sees them around town and tells them how great they are, overconfidence builds.
@mayjay I'm talking about the White Sox, NOT the hated Cubs! Sox won it in 2005.
@Blown He had me until he used his example of long suffering fans finally winning with the Red Sox when they suffered only 86 years and the White Sox won the next year after an 88 year drought, but he didn't mention us!
I have to talk myself out of this every year when KU and UW fail. Interestingly, I have a daughter playing college lacrosse, some 900 miles away so I can't watch. Yesterday she scored her first goal! Last night all I could think about was that dumb game we lost, and not the joy of knowing about her first goal.
I sometimes hear people say in game chats like ours "this is embarrassing". Embarrassing for whom? Do we really think people are going to look at us and think we're losers? Are they going to talk bad about us tomorrow at work whispering "hey look, there's blown, he (she?)'s a Jayhawks fan, how embarrassing?"!!
The few times I've been privileged to be cheering for a team that i really care about that wins it all, the Bears in 86, KU in 88 and 08, Bulls in the 90's and White Sox in 2005, something else happens. Within a day, I start worrying about next year. Do we have what it takes to repeat? What if we don't repeat, that will be a failure.
Wow human nature sure works against us sometimes!
@Bosthawk Probably the Indiana game.
Good post. Thanks for keeping our outlet open for discussing things far and wide!
@Texas-Hawk-10 What happened? My normal reaction to games like this is to just shut it off. I don't read (except here), listen anything. I'm done.
I'm staying
Oregon winning it all would be the only salvation in this loss. Losing to the team that finishes cutting down the nets means we lost to the best team in March. Happened last year, in 2012, and a few others like Arizona, Syracuse and Maryland.
My college roommates daughter and son in law paid 500 bucks to be in the arena. I'm sure they're feeling worse than any of us!
Every year the same thing happens. We lament the unexpected ending to the season. We write dumb things like fire the coach, I'm finding a new team, I'm not going to paint my house crimson and blue after all, and then perspective sets in. We get a few late signees, baseball starts, summer comes around, we tinker with our lineup choices and then bootcamp, and we're freshly enthusiastic for the next season. Same thing will happen this year. We'll be back in the conversation again, and again, and again. We're going to win again one of these years. Keep the faith.
Been a magical season. The long offseason starts. Lots of handwringing awaits.
Can't believe the negativity. Sure, we're getting our a.... handed to us, but some of you, well I just should shut my mouth. I know we're disappointed, but goodness. I'm kind of surprised.
Refs are not the problem in this game. We've been whistled only 9 times, them 13. We've taken way more FT's, which are relatively keeping us in the game right now.
@approxinfinity I noticed that too. we are getting some calls
Defense Defense
I just can't get over the two fouls on JJ to open the game. Totally changed the outcome right from the start. I might be wrong, but it really sucked.
It's still doable, but I don't think we can hold them on 59 all night
Dude pushed Graham in the back
Ball on floor and we watch it.
