RENTLESS ONSLAUGHT! • Nov 19, 2014 04:42 PM

Reminded me of the TCU loss in 2013. I guess we recovered and got better, although the memory of that offensive paralysis sort of stuck in my mind the rest of the season.

HEM Analysis, please!!! • Nov 19, 2014 04:36 PM

@MoonwalkMafia Not impressed. If I shuffle my feet like Barry Sanders, I can blow by anyone too.

RENTLESS ONSLAUGHT! • Nov 19, 2014 04:42 AM

Played decent D except for cleaning the glass. Needed to shoot about 60% for this game to be close, and that was about it.

I have ZERO idea what Self's offensive strategy was for this game, so hopefully a reporter will ask him.

Wow! KU playing with motivation... • Nov 16, 2014 03:45 AM

HIRE BOWEN

I've yelled it everywhere I can including from the frigid stands in Memorial today.

Today was proof enough for me. I'm convinced that Bowen has it (like that damn geezer up in Manhattan)... that ability to make 2-star players think they can beat anyone. Maybe it will take one more win to convince the genius administrators who f-d up a winning program. If we win either of our last two games (@ OU or @KSU) and Z doesn't give Bowen a contract, he'll be run out of Lawrence faster than Lew Perkins can light up a fat cigar.

Resurrecting this thread since another hammer might be about to hit UNC.

@jaybate-1.0 What you're asking (what level of work is required for credit) varies by program, institution, regents, federal guidelines, and --MOST IMPORTANTLY--by accrediting body.

In UNC's case:
SACSCOC Credit Hours policy (pdf) ↗

If a "University" wants to offer classes that don't ever meet and don't require any coursework, they could certainly do that--diploma mills aren't illegal. But any D1 school (especially a flagship research 1) would jeopardize everything--accreditation status, academic reputation, grant qualification, and any kind of public funding--by not meeting an acceptable level of academic rigor. It would be a dead end strategy. Why would a student want to PAY for those classes? Who would hire those graduates? (other than athletes and professional sports leagues of course)

KU vs. Emporia St - Svi To Start • Nov 11, 2014 06:49 PM

I suspect Oubre confused that it was okay to wear a new coiffure to Late Night with it not being okay to use hair as a branding tool once the bullets start flying.

Maybe Self remembers that idiotic star that Sherron Collins had shaved on his head prior to getting beaten by UMass in the sprint center back in 2008. I sure remember it. And Collins went like 5 for 20 shooting that game.

First Exhibition: Mason Was The Star • Nov 06, 2014 04:37 AM

LOL. Slayr. "Air muscles." I totally get what you're saying about muscle mass vs. strength. It's more about physics/leverage, not muscle size. Torque vs. power. Shoulder width. Some guys can bulk up to freakish bicep size and never be "strong." Cliff probably won't ever have TR0b's superman body, but he does have a naturally strong frame. Hudy is no dummy, so I suspect she is working on his hops/foot speed rather than his upper body strength. (Motor/heart to be determined.)

Buckets shout out on old site • Nov 05, 2014 02:44 PM

Lots of DanRs out there in the world. My last name is spelled differently than that guy's by about nine letters.

As we all know, it's impossible to fool that Facebook verification system they have.

First Exhibition: Mason Was The Star • Nov 04, 2014 02:22 PM

I'm kind of giddy about Svi too. Smooth all around. Beautiful passer--catches and redirects it as if the ball never changes speed. He looked comfortable and moved effortlessly, whereas Greene still seems to be out of control. Figure skater vs. hockey player.

I'm not crazy about a few of those "look at me" haircuts.

Tomorrow and other topics • Nov 03, 2014 01:43 PM

Starting Graham, Selden, Mason, Ellis and Traylor tonight, not that that means jack about the rest of the season.

Feels like Christmas!

The Only Question Was "Who" • Nov 02, 2014 06:43 PM

What I looked forward to most this season:

1.. Ellis making the sophmore to junior jump like the Morrii and TRob made

2.. Jamari playing like (6-10) another two inches over his actual height

3.. Frankamp nailing a few late game soul-crushing daggers from three against Texas and ISU.

4.. Selden playing at 100%

5.. Mason and Greene playing under control

6.. Michelson blocking shots, running the floor and giving interviews (sharp guy)

7.. Lucas being a solid oak tree when guys get in foul trouble

8 - 99.. Other stuff (e.g., eating popcorn at AFH, watching Georges Niang get called for flopping, shoveling snow, getting diarrhea during my February trip to Mexico, etc )

100.. Inexperienced freshmen

The Only Question Was "Who" • Nov 01, 2014 08:26 PM

Frankamp scored at will on Svi in the scrimmage

Conner gone? • Nov 01, 2014 02:20 PM

Assuming he didn't show Conner the door, Self seems to have lost whatever mojo mind meld he once had to be able to convince decent young hotshots to stick around (RussRob, EJ, Travis, etc.) and become indispensable upperclassmen. Two top-50ish recruits gone in one year. Bleh.

But, Yippee!, more freshmen get to play this year and next year and the year after that.

WS Game 7 -- Winner Takes All • Oct 30, 2014 03:34 AM

Wish they would've sent Gordon on home... would have been close, but probably a better shot than Perez getting a hit.

ANYHOO, that was a fun month

KU Buckets T-Shirts • Oct 22, 2014 11:57 PM

@Kip_McSmithers There's really no magical line. Plus, copyrights and trademarks are different beasts. (1912 Jay is a registered trademark, so regardless of whether the original copyright ownership for the artwork expired, KU owns the mark as long as they continue to renew and protect it.)

KU Buckets T-Shirts • Oct 22, 2014 08:20 PM

@JayhawkRock78 Thanks for checking with Acme. I'm in Lawrence, so I can work with them if we go forward with anything. I have a couple of other design ideas, but I think we ought to wait until we hear from the powers that be before I throw anything else out here.

@jaybate-1.0 Definitely need approxinfinity's approval. We could get a "Naismith" permission too if you can find a contact person. (I can't find much of an established foundation online, but someone got $4.3 million a while back for the rules!) They don't own the rights to the photograph, so it's more of an issue of using his likeness.

@jaybate-1.0 Where did you see the team photo?

No need to bother Larry Keating. As JayhakwFanToo mentioned, just about anything with "KU" on it will need written approval from the trademark licensing director at KU before any local printer will touch it.

KU Buckets T-Shirts • Oct 21, 2014 07:35 PM

@JayhawkRock78 These were just a couple quick ideas. I'm in the graphic design/advertising biz and have created more T-shirt designs than I care to remember. If we can all come up with a decent idea and legal design, I'd be happy to prepare the print-ready artwork.

KU Buckets T-Shirts • Oct 21, 2014 06:55 PM

There are a few Naismith images in the public domain, so that shouldn't be an issue. The only problem would be using "KU" ... kind of hard to avoid that since it's in the site url.

Maybe if we just add (No Malice.) to the art, they'll go easy on us?

!shirt1.jpg ↗

@KansasComet Happened a couple times with Roy, but never in the Bill Self era... since 2004, lost to Georgia Tech, Bucknell, Bradley, UCLA, Mich. St., NIU, Michigan and Stanford. Won one championship game, lost one.

Roy's teams lost in two F4 semi-final games (North Carolina in 1993 and Maryland in 2002 who both went on to win the championship) Most memorable was probably the Arizona team that plowed through three number 1 seeds in 1997, beating us in the Regional semi's.

Best case and worst case. • Oct 09, 2014 04:36 PM

@Kip_McSmithers Kip, nice analysis. That's about how I see last season without Wiggins too. There was ZERO risk in having him on the that young team, or--frankly--any team, young or otherwise.

If money is the motivator at that level, basing their salary on wins is pointless. They all "want" to win. The thing is, only some coaches are true winners (no matter what they're paid) and the rest are blowhards and phonies who managed to cultivate a perception of success on the backs of others.

On days like this, you find out how weak the Journal World's web servers are.

It was pretty clear that Weiss has never had a good plan to turn the program around, but I don't like the timing either unless it enables us nab a new guy before the market gets hot.

Tips for the New KU Buckets site • Jul 30, 2014 03:53 PM

Looks and works great, approx! Thanks for all the work you put into this.

Every time I go to the KU Athletics website I think, what the hell is up with that puke light blue in the jayhawk logo? And that color shows up on the TV networks all the time in their graphics too.

Good job, color blind KU Athletics web team.

Sad news about Isaiah Austin • Jun 24, 2014 03:07 AM

I knew a guy with Marfan Syndrome (he died at age 50). I commented in one forum or another last year that I wondered if Austin had it (arm shape, sunken chest, not very physical). He's been one of my favorite non-KU players the past couple years, but I find it a bit hard to believe he hadn't been diagnosed already. Maybe he knew, or maybe not, but he obviously didn't realize it would be a deal-breaker with the NBA.

Sucks.

Rock Chalk Diss-appointment! • Jun 13, 2014 02:53 AM

@Crimsonorblue22 Sorry -- that came across a lot harsher than I intended. The idea that Roy reigned him in was news to me. It would be interesting to hear more from Chenowith's perspective about his last couple of years at KU. @Ralster: Source?

Rock Chalk Satisfaction ! • Jun 13, 2014 02:39 AM

Can't do favorites. Too long a list.

There's a spot in my heart for all of them... but the most memorable/inspirational guys to me (the ones who never left anything in the tank every game):

Richard Scott

Hinrich

TRob

Tyshawn Taylor

Pierce

*since 1990

Rock Chalk Diss-appointment! • Jun 13, 2014 02:20 AM

@Crimsonorblue22 I'm really not a Chenowith hater (I'm a dissapoint-er). Pierce was gone, playing for the Celtics, during Chenowith's decent Sophomore season, so that "offense is going in a different direction because of Pierce" excuse is total revisionism. Roy really didn't expect much from his centers (exhibit A: Ostertag): block shots, rebound, hit the putbacks and make a shot from the free throw line once in a while. And Chenowith could actually jump at least a foot higher than O's 3" vertical. There was so much potential, and so little development. in hindsight, maybe it was Roy's coaching staff's blame. In comparison, Withey seemed destined to follow that mold and he reached another level.

I just remember thinking back in the summer of 1999, well, with a solid junior center in Chenowith, maybe he'd be able to help carry those three new guys (Gooden, Collison and Hinrich) in 1999-2000. Nope. California dreamin'.

Rock Chalk Diss-appointment! • Jun 12, 2014 07:38 PM

And, I would add, that Chenowith's 98-99 and 99-00 teams were probably the least interesting teams in the past 25 years.

Rock Chalk Diss-appointment! • Jun 12, 2014 07:32 PM

I haven't read all the above posts yet, but surely Eric Chenowith's name came up at least once?

Andrew White to Transfer • May 09, 2014 01:41 AM

As seen on KUSports ↗
Not shocking news, but this is kind of a bummer.

I'm excited about the new guys, but there's no way Self starts three freshmen again.

Start: Mason, Selden, Greene, Ellis, Mickelson/Alexander

Subs: Graham, Frankcamp, Oubre, Traylor, Alexander/Mickelson

Injury insurance: Lucas and White

Very Last Myles Turner Comments! • May 01, 2014 01:41 AM

Meh. I actually like to see a few top players stay in their home states (unless KU is a better fit, of course!). He seems like a good kid, so good luck to him when he's not playing KU.

Plus, I think two years of Mickelson will be worth more than one or two years of Turner.

What is a Blue Blood? • Apr 11, 2014 02:52 AM

@justanotherfan I don't think you need to penalize teams for infractions in addition to what the sanctions were. KU. KY, UConn et al penalties kept them out of the tournaments, so they paid the price for not getting those points. However, you absolutely should not count vacated seasons, like Michigan had ↗, for example, in most of the 1990s.

Really, why is Michigan even on this list? A few recent years of redemption? Michigan's legacy is having the dumbest five basketball players and most corrupt coach on the planet on one team at the same time with their fab five with coach Steve Fisher. To this day, Chris Webber can barely manage one line in an Arby's commercial without calling a time out.

Red Pill or Blue Pill? • Apr 10, 2014 02:48 AM

I'm tired of going into March wondering if our guards can handle the challenge. When was the last time we didn't have that worry? '08? Maybe a bit longer with Sherron?

@drgnslayr Actually, I felt pretty good in 2012 with Tyshawn and EJ by tournament time. It helped to have Withey in there to fix their defensive mistakes though!

Red Pill or Blue Pill? • Apr 09, 2014 12:38 AM

And if teams don't make the tournament, that doesn't count... it's just an average of advancement for teams that make it. That is one way to strictly look at March Madness performance. Should be more accurate than the article I linked to.

@drgnslayr

Why would it "not count" if team didn't even make the tournament? That's a complete failure of a season, a huge black mark on an elite program, and it should count more against any program more than losing in the first or second round. It's hard for KU fans to comprehend this, but GETTING to the tournament is actually not that easy. Calipari has only managed to do it four times in a row. Seven, if you don't count his vacated season at Memphis. To do it 25 times in a row is almost unheard of. In fact, we're only the second team to do it.

It's ridiculous to have to find ways to justify how consistently good KU has been over the past 25 years. I know great programs measure their success in losses, not wins, (and we've had some tough losses), but KU is currently 2 years' shy of the longest NCAA tournament streak ever. ↗

You Red Pill people feeling any better yet? :-)

What is a Blue Blood? • Apr 08, 2014 07:22 PM

Interesting article from last year ↗ judging the success of programs since 2000 based on the NCAA tournament bracket pool scoring. I've updated the totals, and the score comes out like this (top 12 for Wissox):

  1. Kansas 69 (68 +1)

  2. UConn 68 (52 + 16)

  3. (tie) Michigan State 67 (63 + 4)

  4. (tie) Florida 67 (59 + eight)

  5. North Carolina 65 (64 + 1)

  6. Duke 59 (59 + 0)

  7. Kentucky 56 (44 + 12)

  8. Louisville 46 (42 + 4)

  9. Syracuse 40 (38 + 2)

  10. UCLA 37 (36 + 1)

  11. Arizona 36 (32 + 4)

  12. WIsconsin 32 (24 + eight)

Round of 64 loss = 0 points. Round of 32 loss = 1 point, Sweet 16 loss = 2 points, Elite Eight loss = 4 points, Final Four loss = 8 points, Championship Game loss = 12 points, National Champions = 16 points

edited to fix bad auto numbering

Red Pill or Blue Pill? • Apr 08, 2014 05:28 PM

It is embarrassing, right? With 24 losses, KU is the biggest tournament loser in the past 25 years.

25 straight tournaments

10 elite eights

6 final fours

4 finals

1 championship

724 W - 145 L (.833 overall since 1989-90 )

No real down years. No NCAA penalties. Two class-act HOF coaches. New branches growing off the Jayhawk coaching tree. Lots of successful graduates and some decent NBA players.

Fire Bill and retroactive fire O'l Roy and let's have a few 15-loss NIT seasons to improve that NCAA tournament loss record!

I'm going UCONN! • Apr 08, 2014 01:56 AM

@wissoxfan83 Eisenhower was rooting against that tree... that's what I'm talking about. It's negative energy. Bad MoJo.

Getting deep into one of three Schedule C's now... so I'm probably out for the night. Go UConn!

I'm going UCONN! • Apr 08, 2014 01:40 AM

Not worth watching a game when I'm only rooting against a team, rather than for one. Feels too much like what it must be like to be a Mizzou fan. So, I'm doing something more productive and enjoyable: my tax returns.

Red Pill or Blue Pill? • Apr 06, 2014 06:11 PM

So... taking the red pill just makes me angry and filled with Self-loathing? That's a bitter pill.

If I take it (the red pill), does that mean I have to wish Rick Pitino, Tubby Smith, John Calipari and Jim Calhoun had been KU's coaches for the past 20 years. If so, I'll take any other color pill, thanks!
