Itās all but impossible to compare HS and potential college 3 point percentage. The lines are different, the competition is different, and the style of play is different. Grimes could shoot better in college since heāll have a bunch of open looks, or the deeper line could cause him some problems.
Iām concerned because he doesnāt appear to be a natural shooter. Heās never been a great FT shooter, which tells you the best story.
I think he plays. First, everyone is preparing like he is. Second, nobody has proved a thing. Third, the NCAA cleared almost everyone when names leaked last year. If the NCAA is consistent, theyāll vacate UKās wins from when Bam was there.
Just watched the replay. A couple observations:
-Grimes is going to be really good. Heās way more advanced than almost anyone on the court. Iāll be curious to see how his game translates against better athletes in college. Well-deserved MVP though.
-Hurt and JRE are almost must-gets. Hurt is so skilled, and a better defender than I thought. Heās a ways away, but will be a really good college player. JRE is coldly efficient and had a great motor. He and Hurt would be great complements. Honestly, Hurt/McCormack/JRE would be the best frontcourt in the country, and thatās not even including Silvio.
-I want Cole Anthony baaaad. Heās as most complete a guard as Iāve seen in awhile. No idea if we have a shot at getting him (sounds like itās a pretty locked down deal so far), but he and Dotson would be dirty.
-There are a few under the radar types that impressed me: Watts and Josiah James especially. James reminds me of Marcus Garrett somewhat.
-What happened to bigs? This team was pretty thin up front. How are Bacot and Hepa ranked that high?
-Another reminder of how good Self is. USA wasnāt great for awhile, then found another gear late. Heās probably the best at maximizing talent.
@BShark KU has a shot at Anthony. I think weāre in his top 5, with Duke, Nova, Oregon, and maybe Kentucky. A lot will depend on how rosters shake out in the fall and spring. Duke wonāt get him if Tre Jones is back and Josiah James, Antoine, and Wendell Moore go there. Kentucky will have a bunch of guards too: maybe Quickley, Green, and Maxey. Weāll be out if Grimes stays for year 2.
He and Greg Brown are legit KU options in 20. Also not a shock, but sounds like the U18 targets have really liked playing for Self.

@FarmerJayhawk I read where Self called Hurt an athletic guard. š¤
I think he misspoke. The plan is to play him at the 4 if we get him.
I donāt want Hurt playing much, if any 3 in college because I donāt think he can guard smaller wings. Ideally weād have Hurt at the 4 and Silvio or Dave at the 5, with JRE being the first big off the bench.
This is a little older comp but he reminds me of Keith Van Horn.
Heās a college and NBA stretch 4.
@BShark Nova really in on Cole too. Also a loooong way to go. Doesnāt really talk about recruiting.
Nifty hi lo from Hurt to JRE. Sign of things to come? š
@DoubleDD everyone is preparing like heāll be eligible and will play.
Iām not worried about JRE yet. The staff is still selling the JRE/Hurt frontcourt. UNC is always going to be a recruiting threat (itās an aweseome place to be) but thereās no comparing the Dean Dome and AFH. The visit should seal the deal.
Slater dropping in a CB for KU and Hurt.
@wissox he didnāt. Otherwise they wouldnāt be talking about going to back to college.
Good call. Iād welcome him back. Would immediately be our best outside shooter and maybe this process has lit a fire under him. His skillset is a perfect fit on this team.
Hereās a weird one. Lagerald Vick withdrew from the draft. Methinks heās going overseas and will enter the draft next year.
Ehab Amin decommitted from Nevada. I wouldnāt hate adding him. 6-4, averaged 17 points and almost 7 boards a couple years ago.

Not sure adding Silvio objectively changes much. Would be nice though.
It changes a bunch. Silvio is our second best rebounder and second most skilled big. Heās a good FT shooter who will be a really good 5 man at end of game situations. I really donāt want to have to depend on Mitch and Dave for big minutes.
Good news is if things go to hell at the end of games, we have Silvio. Heās well equipped to play the 5 and is a good FT shooter.
No reason to withdraw beforehand. Just hold out for someone to call up and give you a guarantee.

Reid Travis is withdrawing from the draft and will be grad transfer. Sounds like he is heading to Kentucky. Enormous addition for them. He would have been first team all PAC 12 next year.
Nova is involved as well. Look for them to make a push now that Spellman is gone.
This is going to be a fun matchup. UK will be super young again, probably starting 4 freshmen. Hagans, Quickley, Johnson, and Montgomery. I think all their guys stay in the draft.
@dylans ah, didnāt mean that at all! Was more in reference to earlier comments about some conspiracy to make KU players taller than they actually are.
All these things are true. Bill Self is clean. KU doesnāt pay players. KU doesnāt participate in exclusively clean recruitments.
Sure there are outliers. But KU has been very accurate over the years. Like I said, this isnāt complicated.
KU has measured guys really accurately over the years. They all have been in line with camp, Hoop Summit, and combine measurements. They actually had a few guys taller than their listed heights. T Rob and Wiggins for sure. I remember Self saying once when Svi got here that āwe measured him and heās around 6ā8,ā which was legit.
On the shoe thing, guys who are that much bigger wear shoes with taller soles to better cushion their giant feet. This isnāt that complicated.

Isnāt Art Briles in hell?
I mean he should be š. For a football coach, Iād look at Seth Litrell from North Texas. Young, was a legit college QB at OU (captain on a title team) and has done a very good job at a tough place to win.
Nobody is working on anything because thereās nothing to work on. The NCAA hasnāt sent notice of allegations or anything so everything is totally normal. Silvio plans on suiting up as planned in the fall.
FWIW, nobody knows anything on Silvio so theyāre preparing like heāll be good to go. I tend to think he will be.

I'm hearing John Currie is an old friend of our new Chancellor. Sounds like Currie might be the guy.
Yeah... no.
@BeddieKU23 Zenger was the CEO and the companyās biggest function was in the tank. Itās not complicated.
I totally believe him in that something would have to āfall out of the skyā to fill the last scholarship. With Doke likely coming back, thereās only room on the perimeter. And thereās only two guys I know of are considering reclassifying: Stanley and Lecque. Neither of which is likely to move to 2018.
@BShark itās hard to put into words how much I hate those kind of articles.
Doke said in the Star heād probably be back without a first round guarantee. I like that a lot.
Offer to keep an eye on. Combo forward Jaden McDaniels. Moved up 80(!) spots in the 247 rankings up to number 10.
Remember the Mitchell Robinson saga? Took another turn today when he withdrew from the combine. He wouldāve been terrific at KU if Self wouldāve made him get his head on straight.

KU has a good shot with Lecque, but probably not in 2018 barring us having to go small because of departures.
Seems like if he does go in 18 it would be Brandon Rush kind of late.
Oh yeah it would be after AAU season. So he probably wouldnāt really hit his stride until conference play. But heād be our most explosive player right out of the gate and could play off the ball, where heās more natural at this point.
KU has a good shot with Lecque, but probably not in 2018 barring us having to go small because of departures.
I know Scott from when he was at the UDK and I was at Through the Phog. Heāll be good at providing stuff for folks to read.
Only reason I mention it is because heās getting recruited over, we have a need, and we finished 2nd (by A LOT) in that one. Figured it would be a fun way to pass a slow day or two.
@ReggieKansas lol no. I needed a break from work this afternoon so I asked a question.

24/7 has both Grimes and Dotson ranked ahead of Quickley ā; no way he starts over them. I rather take Cremo who fills a bigger need for KU.
My bad, shouldāve been more clear. Heād start alongside them both, moving Grimes to the 3.
Zany theory (read: 100% complete speculation). What if Quickley wants to decommit from UK? Theyāre already recruiting over him with Maxey and Hagans. We could start him at the 2 pretty easily.
@BShark USC*
Almost all big programs are very careful to avoid being directly involved. As the flagship Adidas school, KU intentionally stays out entirely and letās Adidas... ummm... assist in matching KU to guys who want to play for a blue blood. Same shady stuff happens with UK and Duke, and Oregon to some degree as the flagship Nike schools. Miller and Pitino got involved because they had to. Book Richardson made these deals happen going back to Tarc. Kentucky has Wes. Duke and Oregon have Nike guys at the EYBL. All the flagship schools get to stay hands off while the top talent magically appears.

@FarmerJayhawk So you are saying recruit the top notch talent no matter what the consequences is no matter what? - Just use the I'll be dam approach. - - -Let's take the glory today for the possible consequences tomorrow -The throw all caution to the wind right?
Iām saying that to play in this sandbox, sometimes you have to get a little dirty. We shouldnāt be reckless about it, but sometimes you have to deal with shady people and bend some rules.
I donāt really care how it looks. Go get talent. You all want to win and win big? Go get guys who are legit. We arenāt going to compete with the Duke/UK/UNCās of the world by only going after squeaky clean dudes.
BShark said:
Duke offered 2019 PG Josiah James. Hope they get him!
Same. Though Iām kind of conflicted because I love his game.
I see Cremo as a 2/3 at KU. He can play the 2 and slide Grimes or Garrett to the 3. He played some point at Albany but Iād rather have him off the ball. He does have a good enough handle to bring the ball up on occasion. I think he competes for a starting gig immediately if he picks us.
