I dont think it can be a rebuild year if we are in first place. But still a down talent year for sure. @dylans I guess you could ask why they did not fix Dokes form earlier in light of the marked improvement? But that may be splitting hairs.
@jaybate-1-0 @Jayballer54 I was there yest and the effort from Doke, Vick, and at times Newman is very situational. Doke is tbe worst...he took lots of plays off and it killed us. It was glaring in person.

@jaybate-1-0 Think about if you were a coach and you had the chance to do something JOHN WOODEN!!!!!! never did. The Wizard of Westwood, the guy who won the most NCs. If you had the chance to win 14 in a row, would you not be just the least bit tempted to go all in so you could break his record? If he can seal up the 14th in a row, then maybe late Feb, early March he takes the foot of the DG gas pedal a bit to rest him up for the March Madness.
I certainly would not play him 40 in the B12 tournament. But I certainly want my best guy out there the most minutes to give me the chance to win the conference and make history of a level which puts self into the highest echelon of coaches, and he was already way up there. 14 in a row? Get outta here. It is just ridiculous....we all have egos and if he can wear the label of "1 Better than Coach Wooden" you can bet your sweet bippy that he will ride the D-Train 40 min per game.
@dylans this is just a theory, but in light of how quickly the form changed after the debacle, what about this?
The coaching staff had been trying to get Doke to change form but he was resisting. Being stubborn and spurning advice to the point where coach said, all right smart guy, lets leave you out there in crunch time and see how you do. Once he tanked they told him, OK if you want to play when it really counts, do what we say and learn the right way to do it. Doke is just 17/18 right? Easy to see how he had to be taught that lesson.
Coach comes to the locker room in Norman after the game and says in front of team, Ok we lost that cuz dok missed 6 in a row. I hate to lose and this is about the team. Tomorrow your form changes.
I could see how it could have played out this way.

Diarra runs well, but he is really loose with the ball. He is excellent squirting out on the break.
Doke's FT% jumped 12%, so on the positive we could say he is trending upward! You could tell they made massive form changes, but then the chicken wing went flying out on the first couple throws. The last few and the 2 he made, he actually kept the elbow in, so I will call that some meaningful progress.
Lets face it, its more fun when you have coaches to hate. We used to have Norm and Jonny Orr and Billy Tubbs. Now we have nameless guys in Lubbock. Huggy is a little hateable, but it is tempered by admiration. But Weber, easy to detest. I will donate to the keep Bruce in Manhattan campaign.

I would say all these guys were better than LaB: MJ, wilt, magic, Oscar Robertson, Russell, Kareem, and Larry Bird.

Subbing offense for defense and vice versa is basic coaching. i did it all the time. It did not hurt the kids confidence. It let them know we were doing all we could to win the damn game!

@HighEliteMajor He is clearly not doing the same routine on each shot (Free throw 101), and what I noticed tonight is he is not even looking at the freaking rim when he releases the ball. I constantly worked with my players to improve their form and routine during the season, and guess what? Most of them improved!

@mayjay I was thinking the same thing when posting. Early on malik was not elevating at the rim and leaving everything short. Now he is exploding and finishing or getting fouled. DG is leaving And 1s on the table.
@Gunman With it clearly being 4 on 5 when Garret is in, why not give sam some mins to see if he can can a jumper? It is clear garret has notheing but bricks to unload 85% of the time.
We were toast if he had not done a fly by on the tower. He went all Maverick on us. He is better than DG at driving down hill.

Could it be Dok has finally been more active and aggressive protecting the paint? With less collapsing, the guards are in better position to defend more tightly or close out more quickly.

They also took two quick shots (unnecessary 3s) under 2 with the ball and lead. The announcers were yelling so loud to burn clock i cant believe Drew could not hear it. If they grind 20 more ticks and score even 2 pts at that point we probably lose for sure.
Seemed to me that Bill was just RIPPING Dok every time out for his lazy play. Luckily he decided to show some effort on the final possession by altering the shot.

@BShark @jaybate-1-0 Silvio just having more time to learn the plays and get comfortable with them will let him get more in the flow and let his obvious athleticism come out. I saw all I needed to see in 2 plays to know he was legit.

@jaybate-1-0 I have really been watching Dok and at the pace he is improving, I think he may just add the third post move still this season. Drop step, running hook, and up and under = 20 ppg. I get the feeling he got tired of the coaches ragging on him and he humbled himself and started doing what they said and voila! It worked in game and he turned a mental corner. It is also a real possibility that the simple fact of knowing Silvio can come in for 4-8 min has taken a burden off Dok, he can play more freely knowing there is beef off the bench to guard the trench.
The "foul" on Vick when he got sandwiched by Ahmad and konate, and the last foul on Doke to take him out and try to give the game to WV were absolutely ludicrous. Our playrs showed unlimited restraint to deal with these obvious engineering ploys by the officials. Mitch really stepped up to seal the game with the huge rebound on the D end and the O rebound and slam. Btw...watching the replay, vick's shot was goal tended...tipped after it hit glass and missed by zebras. So Mitch s adjustment and dunk was even more crucial and impressive.
Bill just has so much more polish and charisma with people, but I agree he is just as tough/hard/direct when it comes to the coaching aspect with the players.
I would not want to be at the WV practice today!
