Is it snowing in Kansas? • Oct 15, 2018 03:30 PM

@dylans

It was all of 0.2" in some places and none in Olathe or Johnson County that I know. The previous earliest measurable snow was October 17, 1898 but it was a more respectable 3.3".

@Woodrow

When a school signs with an apparel firm for sponsorship there is an implicit understanding that it will help steer prospects to the school and I am sure coaches from Nike sponsored programs call Nike as well when it helps with a prospect. There is nothing to indicate or even imply that KU knew Adidas was doing anything illegal which in Silvio's case amounted to all of $2,500.

@wissox

No snow in KC yet but cold. We did not have much of a spring going from Winter almost straight into Summer and looks like we might also skip Fall and go straight into Wnter.

@Texas-Hawk-10

The opponents you mentioned play in a conference that is not that good so their records are good but against weak competition. Short of a meltdown of a whole bunch of teams UCF will be left out again.

Meacham Out • Oct 15, 2018 12:08 AM

@Texas-Hawk-10

I just don’t sec UCF getting in unless there are no other unbeaten or one loss teams left which is unlikely; the rest of its schedule is fairly pedestrian with no opportunity for a signature win. No question it is a very good team but lack of affiliation with a P5 conference will not help. Notre Dame is an independent with no P5 conference affiliation but it has a considerably tougher schedule plus tradition and a huge following which the NCAA wants for all the major bowls which UCF cannot match.

@mayjay

I completely disagree with you. Comparing Kaepernick an athlete who made his statement at his employer's place of business and on company time and forced people to watch it does not equate to a singer that did it on his own time.

Now, Swift and West are both singers, both made political statement - this is an exact apples to apples comparison - and West was savaged by the MSM and Hollywood even including racial slurs by a host of CNN. In contrast, the MSM and Hollywood applauded Swift for making also a similar political statement.

Again, this is textbook apples to apples comparison and if you don't see it you are blinder than a :bat: .

Maybe you don't like the content of Kanye's message any more than conservatives like Swift message but I just did not see any criticism of her from the MSM or Hollywood like it criticized Kanye and I did not see any conservatives calling her names or using racial slurs either....even Trump mildly indicated that he likes her now 25% less...

I did not criticize Swift, I thought she has the right to express her opinion like any other citizen and so does West.

I did not criticize Kaepernick for demonstrating either, he has the right to do it on his own time and not on company's time or at his employer's place of business where he does not have that right...as many, many , many legal scholars made it abundantly clear...and before you accuse m, once again of making legal claims, I am not, I am just quoting what actual constitutional attorneys said, including know lefty Dershowitz, which can be easily verified by a quick Google search.

I also praised those players that took the time to meet with police and go to Congress to testify since they had at least the desire to try to find solutions. Like most liberals Kaepernick did not do any of that, instead, in his few public appearances he insulted police officers and praised Castro and Chavez, two totalitarian dictators. It is obvious he did not want a solution, he wanted an issue and publicity...and he got both and a big payoff to boot.

@JayHawkFanToo It says the people that told Kaep and Bron to stick to sports. It just seems like there is a bit of a double standard, is all.

Absolutely there is a double standard but we need to compare apples to apples.

Lets compare the reaction to two similar and very popular singer/entertainers. As I showed above, Kanye was viciously attacked by the MSM and Hollywood for expressing support for Trump, something he did on his own time and dime and did not force anyone to watch it. Taylor Swift, on the other hand, did exactly the same thing except she was shilling for a liberal politician and was widely applauded by the MS and Hollywood. This is the real comparison and the real double standard, don't you agree.

I have no problem withe Kaepernick doing all the protesting he wants but I always indicated he should do it in his own time and not at his employer's place of business where he forced fans to put up with his antics and in the process hurt his employer's bottom line and by extension the livelihood of his teammates. Of course we now know it was all about money and an excuse to hide the fact that he was replaced as starter as his skills had greatly decreased and did not warrant a starting job and he chose to not go away gracefully like most reasonable athletes do but threw a fake hissy fit instead. Even some of my liberal friend are now pretty disappointment with him and feel they were used, some still don't see it or more correctly see it but refuse to admit they were duped. To each his own.

In what planet do you live?

Kanye West has been viciously attacked by the liberal press ↗ with disgusting racial insults led by no other than CNN anchors and guests.

He has also been savaged by liberal Hollywood for expressing his opinion while Taylor Swift had been praised and placed on a pedestal for doing the exact same thing...except for the liberal side.

BTW, you forgot that Kaeperenick carried his protest at his employer's place of business and on company time and forced million of fans to watch his antics while West does on his own time and dime.

I agree. Justices, just like any other judge, should follow the Constitution which is the ultimate law of the land. If the people feel the Constitution needs to be updated/changed there is a process that must be followed and cannot be arbitrarily changed by activist judges that choose to interpret it in a manner that fits a political agenda and contrary to that intended explicitly or implicitly.

Not necessarily. If Silvio ends up not playing and Agbaji red shirts then you are looking at a more manageable and still very deep 10 players.

At this point, the only player that would heavily impact if he were not to play is Dedric...and maybe Grimes, but all the rest can be replaced.

Keep in mind that the last 2 seasons Mitch was playing as an undersized 5 matching up against much bigger opponents. He has now bulked up quite a bit and will be playing a more fitting 4 or even 3 so he will not have the size disadvantage he had before.

@BShark

Agreed. There was talk that PT was promised to Wiggins but his recruitment was so different than any other that it is hard to tell. Also Oubre was thought to have been promised to take over Wiggins spot but in reality he had to earn the position...which he did. On a side note, Oubre has developed into a solid NBA player and doing well at Washington and will soon be a starter.

Best Passer... EVER • Oct 12, 2018 07:01 PM

@justanotherfan

True. Some of the playing time will also depend on who the opponent is and what the match ups are. A team with no size inside will see a lot of Doke, Silvio and even Big Dave, but a team with size might see more of Mitch who is capable of stepping outside and hitting the 3.
Same thing with the back court. a team with lack of back court size will see more of Moore, particularly if a 3 point shooter is needed but a team with tall guards will see more of Garret.

Nice to have all these option that just were not available the past few seasons.

I think the best question is why Self added the likes of Adams, Peters, Cunliffe, Maxwell, Whitman, Merv, Royce etc… in the first place.

In reading your posts I got the impression that you believe Coach Self misled players into thinking they would have a bigger role at KU and then they were let go when there is no evidence of that happening.

My personal opinion is that he thought they could be good practice players that might be able to contribute and even earn playing time "IF" they developed as hoped. Coach Self is not know for promising playing time to players and he has always stated for the record that players need to earn playing time, particularly by playing defense.

I did not comment on the merits of lack thereof for any specific case since I did not want to make it a political or any other type of issue, that was your take.

I simply indicated that oftentimes appointed/nominated individuals turn out to be quite different than expected, with the head of the Fed being one...tha's all.

The Death Of College Basketball • Oct 12, 2018 06:11 PM

@BShark

While the team uses only players 5 players at the time at game time it needs more to operate effectively and even more to practice. KU was at one time using grad assistants and equipment managers because the lack of players. Most programs typically carry a lot more players than the available scholarships. The players you mentioned were likely told what their role would be and that they would have a chance to prove themselves and perhaps even earn playing time or a starting position but once they got to campus they realized they were completely out of their league and the chances of earning playing time were very small they chose to leave.
Some marginal recruit or even walk-ons actually earn not only playing time but starting roles, see Moody, Teahan.

I am not sure what do you expect a coach to do, not recruit a top prospect because you already have an average player or two at that position? I think not. Coaches will play the players that give the team the best chance to win; if a player does not believe he is capable to compete at that high level then he should not go to an elite program and expect playing time. Playing time is not an entitlement (considering the current environment, in the near future it might become one :smile: ), it is something that is earned.

I get that players like White sometimes get caught in the crossfire but that is true in most everything in life.

FBI...here we go • Oct 12, 2018 05:25 PM

Coaches saying there are not aware there is a lot of cheating going on in college sports reminds me of [this little gem...](

Coaches are not that naive, I am sure most are generally aware of the cheating going on in college sports but realize it is the reality of the game and choose to not be directly involved and have plausible deniability.

As far as I can tell, the only thing that affects KU is the $2,500 Silvio's guardian received for either on-line classes or to repay the Maryland booster. In the big scheme of things it is a minor amount that if repaid (to whom it would be???) it would result in a slap in the wrist and maybe a 2-3 game suspension.

KU seems to be pretty much in the clear vis-à-vis Preston since all the clowns involved actively worked to keep KU in the dark and KU acted prudently by holding him as soon as it had a suspicion of wrong doing and he did not play a single game for KU.

The Death Of College Basketball • Oct 12, 2018 04:54 PM

@Woodrow

I agree with you. Most of the transfers are not because a players is forced out but because he expects playing time that is just not available and they choose to move to programs where they expect to get more playing time to showcase their "skills" for the next level. The truth is that if a player is not good enough to get plaything time at KU, his chances of making it to the NBA are slim to none; even the starters and stars have a hard time getting to the next level; frankly, a bench warmer will have a better chance in life with a college degree than trying to make it to the NBA.

The part that is missed is that the NCAA also has an obligation to at least try to help student get an education while playing sports. Most schools require that the last 2 years are done in residence at the institution and a certain number of school credit (at least half) required for graduation be earned there. Having an open transfer policy will ultimately result in some students having credits in several schools and after 4 or 5 years not enough in one to graduate. Having a transfer player sit one year forces him to stay at one school for at least 2 years and gives him a fighting chance to get a degree...not a bad thing. Graduate transfers already have a degree so this is likely why they do not need to sit one year.

Just my opinion but I am open to other views.

@KUSTEVE You do agree that Jay Powell runs the Fed, is a Trump appointee, is a Republican, and is the person who makes the final call on the interest rates, right?

You have to admit that lot of appointments don't turnout the way it was expected.

Looking at SCOTUS appointees:

William Brennan, appointed by Eisenhower as a conservative and left as a veritable liberal icon.

Harry Blackmun, appointed by Richard Nixon was supposed to be a conservative appointee to reign the Warren Court and became quite the liberal including taking the lead in the Row-V- Wade case.

Byron White, appointed by Kennedy as a liberal justice ended up being a fairly conservative justice.

John Paul Stevens, appointed by Ford ended up being quite the liberal justice, same as David Souter appointed by Bush.

Lewis Powell, appointed by Nixon who had written extensively in favor of business had quite the turnaround.

Earl Warren, appointed by Eisenhower became the patron saint of the liberal jurisprudential revolution.

The same is true for lots of others appointed to high positions based on their record only to act quite the opposite. Do you think Trump does not regret appointing Sessions as head of the Department of Justice?

Just because Trump appointed Powell does not mean he agrees with what he is doing or that he anticipated he would do what he is doing. Trump has stated he does not agree with the actions of the Fed/Powell but as an independent agency there is not much he can do at this time.

I mean what kid doesn’t want to be OAD??

The sad truth is that prospects have now become pretty much hired guns and they do not even hide that fact. Universities were originally the place where kids went to get a college degree and played sports on the side, then it was the place they went to prepare for a potential career in the NBA while getting a degree and now it is the place where they go for one year to get high end training and exposure with no intention whatsoever to get a degree.

I have said it before that every top 100 prospect believes he can play in the NBA, every to 30 prospect believes he ca be a star and every top 5 player believes he will be the next Jordan, Bird, Johnson or James and in reality only a tiny fraction makes it to the league, a smaller number becomes starters and maybe one or two of every class becomes a star...really long odds. Some of the old timers on the board will remember a similar situation when boxing was big in the 60s and 70s and every kid saw himself as the next world champion millionaire and the result were similar with only a few making it big and now boxing is on its way out with only a few big fights and a shrinking audience having been replace by the even more brutal MMA.

You have taken my words completely out of context to fit your narrative. Not cool.

If UNC and South Carolina really want to play a game to raise money all they have to do is buy out one of their exhibition opponents, the going rate is about $10K, so they can easily do it and even pay a premium buyout and still raise a lot of money. Easy solution unless what they really want is an extra game that will not count against quality competition.

...and no, you are not being punked, I presented a viable alternative that you refuse to even consider, so any further discussion is moot.

2018 Secret Scrimmages • Oct 12, 2018 12:50 AM

@Kcmatt7

There are already guidelines in place and waivers are not needed. Teams are allowed two exhibition games that they can schedule any way they want and there is no reason why they cannot use one of them as a fundraiser. Also, teams can always leave one regular season game unscheduled and they can use it as a fundraiser as needed or just give the kids a breather and not use it.

2018 Secret Scrimmages • Oct 11, 2018 04:14 AM

@Kcmatt7

It is indeed a slippery slope. If fund raiser games are given an exception, what prevents big programs to schedule 3, 4, 5, 6 or more fund raising games? The number of exhibition games is already set and school are free to use them to fund raise if they do desire. The number of pre-season/exhibition games is set so teams will not start playing too early and place an undue burden on players which, believe it or not, are also students. This is the reason why overseas tours and pre season tournaments are allowed only every so many years.

Very interesting. I always thought that Garret could play PG, after all, he was the Texas Gatorade POY playing PG. I am sure Jaybate will be disappointed that Vick will not be playing PG. :smile:

Grimes development will be the key on how well this team does. This team has the size and speed to be very good defensively and I am sure the offense will come along as well.

I take it that Agnabi is the primary RS candidate since he has indicated that he would be open to it. Many have mentioned Mitch as well but I personally don't believe he will. Of course if Silvio ends up not playing then there is less of an issue.

In the same letter the ABA indicated that the "original rating stands."

There was lot of pressure on the ABA to issue the letter but in the end is just -much ado about nothing- and the rating will stand.

While many consider his demeanor/temperament not what they expected, an equal or greater number saw it as the sign of an innocent man, wrongly accused and vigorously defending his reputation and good name. Different strokes for different folks.

Preseason Media Source Question.... • Oct 10, 2018 09:47 PM

Also, I should have mentioned that YouTube TV is also a month to month contract and you can stop it and restart it any time you want. I believe it has a free one week trial that you can get to see if you like it. Also, you can record as many shows as you want simultaneously and they are all stored on the Cloud. I have my account set up to automatically record all the shows I like and it will even record reruns. Pretty cool considering that other services charge you extra for it and have limits on how much you can store.

Preseason Media Source Question.... • Oct 10, 2018 09:40 PM

FWIW. A friend here in Olathe got the package with ATT and Direct TV. Even when the internet came via fiber optic, it did not have the capability to carry cable so they installed a dish. As soon as the equipment was installed she was told she would need to pay insurance for the equipment; apparently if it goes bad you are responsible for it...never ran into anything like it before. The dish would not work well when there was storm or even rain and when she sold her house, she had to pay a huge termination fee. Be very careful with the contract they offer, lots of fees that you are not told in advance. Comcast is even worse.

@JayHawkFanToo I was not only addressing your USA Today post. I was also referring generally to all of your posts on this subject.

As to this last vomitus vomitus, your flaw lies in assuming that criminal justice standards should apply to determining whether someone has the character, record, history, intellectual ability, reputation, integrity, and temperament to merit being on the Supreme Court. The issue always is whether the candidate meets the highest standard in each area, not whether any allegations against the candidate require enough proof to dispel any reasonable doubt with a perfunctory 5 day investigation that specifically excludes interviews with either the complainant or the candidate.

I believe that when possible I have cited sources for my posts and even a cursory Google search can verify the rest. I have not made any legal arguments other than to mention that the presumption of innocence is one of the cornerstones of our legals system; you don't need to go to law school to learn that. you learn it in middle school civics class.

More directly to your ad-hominem argument, The ABA unanimously gave Kavanaugh its highest well qualified rating.

Its published criteria explain what this means for a Supreme Court nominee:

"A Supreme Court nominee should possess an especially high degree of legal scholarship, academic talent, analytical and writing abilities, and overall excellence. The ability to write clearly and persuasively, to harmonize a body of law, and to give meaningful guidance to trial courts, circuit courts and the bar for future cases are particularly important skills for a Supreme Court nominee. . . . To merit the Committee’s rating of “Well Qualified,” a Supreme Court nominee must be a preeminent member of the legal profession, have outstanding legal ability and exceptional breadth of experience, and meet the very highest standards of integrity, professional competence and judicial temperament. The rating of “Well Qualified” is reserved for those found to merit the Committee’s strongest affirmative endorsement."

...which exactly addresses all the points you raised and he met all the criteria. As you know, there have been a number of studies that have determined a bias by the ABA against Republican nominated candidates for the many positions in which it provides ratings, so an unanimous well qualified rating is even more impressive.

Maybe you should take up your issue withe the ABA. SMH.

By the way, if the Democrats wanted a longer investigation, Feinstein should not have waited 6 weeks to release the information just before the vote in a very transparent move to delay the process which we now know was the plan all along. I know you will say that Professor Ford wanted it kept confidential but when she contacted the Washington Post and shared information with them all bets should have been off. You can't have it both ways, demand privacy while providing information to the press. It is right up there with Corey "I am Spartacus" Booker who made a spectacle of himself by stating that he was risking expulsion by releasing classified documents when he had been informed the night before the documents had already been made public and no longer classified. The Democrats shot themselves on the foot...repeatedly...and have no one to blame but themselves.

There is an easy solution. Both teams can pay off one of their scheduled pre-season opponents and play each other instead. If the end goal is to raise money, the opponents will not have any objections since they would be paid not to play. Now it looks like they are trying to get a third game.

2018 Secret Scrimmages • Oct 10, 2018 03:28 PM

@justanotherfan

Not necessarily. The term slippery slope comes to mind. Once it starts granting permission for a 3rd pre season game, all program will find a worthy charity and pretty soon it becomes the norm. The two schools could easily payoff one of their scheduled opponents and play the other game instead. Looks to me like a sneaky way to get a third preseason game against a quality opponent without giving up the two others.

Preseason Media Source Question.... • Oct 10, 2018 03:13 PM

I did a fair amount of research and tried Hulu and Sling for a month and final,y ended up with YouTube TV. It caries all the ESPNs and Fox sports channels plus a bunch of others including the Big 10 and SEC networks and soccer, tennis and Olympic sports channels. It also carries TBS, TNT, USA, all the the FX channels, all the News networks and as a bonus all 4 network local TV stations. I pay under $40 for all of it (grandfathered) and it allows 6 individual accounts and 3 simultaneous streams plus unlimited storage cloud recording of your favorite shows; you also get the extended version of YouTube. By the time I added all the options to Hulu and Sling, YouTube TV was a no brainer. I use a Roku sticks on the TV sets that are not already capable.

I also installed a very unobtrusive externally antenna with an amplifier and I feed the signal to all the TV set via the house existing coaxial cable network. I get channel 38 in KC that has the KU games not available otherwise. When I cut the cord, I got a decent deal from Consolidated for internet only for $40 for 100 Mbps. I also have 4 VOIP landlines through VOIPO for a very reasonable rate although I am thinking about doing away with them since 95% of the calls now come through my cell phone and I use the fax machine maybe once or twice per year.
