@BeddieKU23 He is so much more athletic than Svi, it's ridiculous. I'm not saying he is a better bb player, but when Svi's shot isn't falling, then I think he becomes a liability, at least on the defensive end.
@BeddieKU23 I am ecstatic over him coming into the rotation. If Newman and Svi aren't playing defense, put Cunliffe and Garrett in. At least he will hedge drivers on the perimeter. I'm tired of the jailbreaks to the basket from the perimeter. He instantly becomes the tallest player we have on the perimeter ( other than Svi ), and will be able to shoot over the zone as well.
We're picking the bones off the flesh. We're not going to be an NBA All-star team. Still, I think this team can be a real good team, warts and all. Cunliffe will help keep the guys fresh on the perimeter, and should play good defense when he's in there. Now we have a pivot if Newman or Svi is struggling. De Sousa is a classic old style 4 with elite rebounding skills. He will help us when Doke gets in foul trouble. Two extra players in the rotation will allow us to play more aggressively. All is not lost - keep the faith.
"These are times that try mens souls". Maybe separating ourselves from the massive expectations , and the team separating itself from that pressure will allow them to play with a free mind, and end up going further than some of our teams in the past in the tourney. At least, that's my hope. Either way, I still love them more than any other team I've ever followed. So, thick or thin, I'm in.
@nuleafjhawk The glass is always full. It's 50% water, and 50% air.
@jaybate-1.0 I think he probably internalizes lots of the stress, and the blood pressure is certainly elevated.
@dylans What do you mean? Did something happen in the Baylor game????
Marsha is a real good coach, and a piss ant at the same time. His wife is a lush with a big mouth.
@jaybate-1.0 I think he is having health problems. His color looks bad. I noticed Norm did the Jayhawk Talk last night.
@JayHawkFanToo Sosinkski isn't on the same level as de Sousa, experienced or not. de Sousa will play more his first game than what Sosinski will play the entire year, imo.
@3genhawk I sent him a tweet. It's my first one ever.
@HighEliteMajor Garrett.
We've never had a rebuild year. We've never been an underdog. We've never got to carry that chip on our shoulder. Who knows ...maybe this team catches fire at the exact right time, and goes further in the tournament than our more well thought of teams in the past. More than anything, I want to see them playing with a free mind. Relax, it's just basketball.
@HawkChamp I don't miss Tyshawn.
@wissox You're having a tough year in basketball. Wisky looks pretty rough as well.
It's a rebuild year. We're going to take some lumps along the way. At least we aren't as bad as Wisconsin.
@HighEliteMajor If I could give you 1,000 thumbs up, I would. Amen.
@JayHawkFanToo Did you see the non-calls on Bagley? He shoved a guy out of the way to get a rebound, and then did the same thing going for the offensive board the next time down. He knocked down a BC player each time, and the refs called nothing either time.
@Hawk8086 We'll never know- we never tried it.
@Hawk8086 We had an open shot all day from 2 feet further out than where we were shooting 3s.
It's Parrish. Gary Freaking Parrish. He writes his Top 25 and 1 with a crayon. He combs his hair with a fork. He braids his nostril hair. He can't talk without slobbering. You wouldn't ask him his advice on any other issue, so I wouldn't take his advice on college basketball, either. He's trying to generate clicks.
@jayballer54 LMAO...I'm having fun with this. I was thinking the team could play with a 4-H sleeve on their unis, and maybe give out free John Deere hats to the fans. Maybe set up some farm implement displays near the concession stand or something...
He is playing three dimensional chess with the team. He does this every once in a while. Sometimes it works spectacularly- sometimes it doesn't work ( TCU loss a few years back ).
@kjayhawks Maybe have a WSU/KU match up for a Saturday Night event at the state fair. Label it the state championship. Maybe they could have the top 2 juco teams, and the women's teams play pre-lim games. But, we'd be the headline attraction that night. No tractor pulls for that day - only basketball.
@HighEliteMajor I'm glad you're not in charge of promotions- you would have us playing at the state fair for the tri-county championship.
Seems like some folks living in KU territory always want to set up County Fair championships. We're a world wide brand- we're not some yokums looking to win the tractor pull. Ok, your "friend" is a Shlocker fan...just agree with everything they say, nod your head, and wait until the next time they lose, and then nail them to the wall, and make them eat every word of it. Geez, what's next ... are we going to play the state juco champ in the Hutch tournament?
@chriz He is a goofball.
Here's an idea : back up 2 feet, and make a shot. Quit driving into defenders, and shoot the damn ball. How many threes did I see where DG or Svi would drive up to the defender, and try to shoot over them? And why did we move Vick off the top of the key, and move him down into the double team area near the paint? Bad playing, and bad coaching, imo. I'm not freaking out over it- we always look terrible when we lose. i just hate losing to an inferior team because we didn't play as smart as they did. I am convinced that Cunliffe being thrust into a prime role as a freshman was not something he was ready for. I think him coming in and getting 10 minutes+ will help us, and help him too. Newman is like part EJ, Selden, and Tyshawn all rolled into one player. I've never seen a guard hit the underside of the backboard on a fast break more than a time or two in my life, and it seems like that is Newman's signature shot. He does it once or twice a game, it seems. I think getting Billy Preston on the court will help. James the bruiser would help, too. Same with deSousa. Ok, I feel better now.
@Crimsonorblue22 The sky isn't falling. I already checked, and it's still there.
We see Newman has lots of work to do, Vick certainly showed last night he has a ways to go towards being a leader, DG has had great and not so great moments, but with Cunliffe we demand a finished product from day 1. It's a process. Myself, I wouldn't have minded seeing him hit a few 3s last night.
Hey Rooster...let's kick some Huskie ass! RCJHGKU!
@jayballer54 Look, man. I've drank the Cunliffe Kool-aid. I'm all in with this guy. Defensive stopper ... steal extra possessions ... very good shooter ....a real athlete... at least that's what Devonte said. If Newman starts having one of his "Hello, Newman" nights, give this guy some court time.
@HighEliteMajor KU by 15. I think WVU will give us a much better game.
@HighEliteMajor They don't post up. reminds me of Baylor. They had a decided advantage down low, especially against Ristic, and never challenged him. How many times have we seen Baylor have one of the tallest front lines in basketball, and never play to the strengths? I thought the whole A & M team looked a little slow and cumbersome on offense.
@JayHawkFanToo Even when A & M went inside, they don't do any seal offs that I could see- it was alot of those 4 to 6 foot jumpers. I was thinking paper tiger watching Kennedy's offense. I have zero fear of them.
JRE = Robinson-Earl?
@jaybate-1.0 We could get Granny to ring the vittles bell. Possum stew could shake him out of the bushes....
Everytime I see Nova trap the ball at half court, and in the corners, I just wish we would try doing the same thing. Maybe not every play, but man does that generate turnovers, and run outs.
I came away less impressed with A & M than what I had originally thought. Guard play looks like an issue, and why in the world is Kennedy playing his bigs on the perimeter??? I don't like their offensive approach at all.
We (all of us) love to exonerate Bill Self on failures, but hypocritically praise him for every success.
I've been called worse than a hypocrite. I'll wear your assessment with honor.
@HighEliteMajor After 7 games, you're right. After 14 games, I think you'll be wrong.
@HighEliteMajor So, has he failed? If he had a few Jamaris on the bench, maybe he doesn't go 4 out. Maybe the Preston suspension is a blessing in disguise because it forces Doke not to hack away. It also forces us to play faster, pass the ball around, and find the open man instead of the point guard making an entry pass into the post while the rest of the team stands around like we saw for years. Nothing screams "exciting ball" like feeding Landen, and watching him flop around trying to score. Not for me, man. Whip that ball to all 4 corners, and one of our guns is gonna get open.
You label the transfers as a "failure"without realizing the chief problem we have this year is our chief strength next year. The difference is this year we have the incredible DG, Vick, and Svi to go along with a 7 foot man beast that is itching to eat the rim. We are oozing with experience this year. Next year, we'll have practically no experience except for the transfers. We will need them badly next year. When Preston gets activated, our depth increases. If DeSousa or Sosinki can come in and help, then we can at least field a competent stable of bigs. We don't have to have the best bigs to win playing 4 out. Start DG/Newman or Cunliffe, Vick, Svi, and start with Doke, then Billy, then whoever's left. This team is really special in my mind due to the fact they have the lack of depth, and they know they have to overcome it.
Welcome, Mr. Sosinki. May all your fouls ring their bells.
@JayHawkFanToo So, what was Devonte's excuse the first 10 minutes? He had played the Baylor zone numerous times- Cuse's zone is simply in another league. They have been in the NCAA tournament for over 30 years with it- they have built their whole program around it. This isn't some creampuff SEC zone team. Devonte talked about their 6'8" and 6'5" guards, and even said you can practice for it, but until you see it in action, it's a whole new world. The only people that played well against that zone were Devonte, Legerald, Svi and Clay, period. So, our 3 seniors and 1 junior led the team ...no surprise there. Malik didn't play well. To say he should've played better because he should've been "experienced"against the Cuse zone - we'll agree to disagree on that one, my friend.
@JayHawkFanToo In all those minutes of "experience", how many times had he faced Syracuse? You're not giving any credit to either the best, most complex zone in college basketball, or the fact we were facing the tallest team in college basketball.
@BeddieKU23 He was sped up. He was shooting too quick. He was firing off shots before his feet were set. He was thinking way too much during the game.
No crying over spilled milk, though. I wish we still had Coleby. We just played the tallest team in America, and won. It is forcing Coach to run the 4 out, which makes us practically impossible to stop. We look like that dinky UCONN team that ran circles around the Kentucky 5 star NBA front line in the championship game a few years back. One thing this team does much better is defend. Last year, it was "what the heck, we'll just outscore them". This year we are locking down, and playing the best defense since 2012. It would be nice to get another big body or two, but I am enjoying watching this team overcome this obvious problem with lack of depth. A 6'3" guy against 7'2"... are you serious?
"Which brings us to Mitch Lightfoot and Marcus Garrett. Um, these two proved not ready for prime time."
I think it was a one-off. The most complex zone in college basketball. The same thing could be said about Newman, who looked awful. Exotic defenses do that to players. Look at the first 10 minutes of the game- even DG looked tentative. This is the tallest team in America. Like Devonte said in post game- it is one thing to practice against a zone, and quite another to face it in real time. By a weird scheduling quirk, our next game is against Boeheim's long term assistant, who runs the same 2/3 zone. I expect we'll see better performances from Garret, Lightfoot, and Newman because it won't be as big of surprise this time.
@Crimsonorblue22 He's known as the biggest whiner in basketball. Gives us zero credit.
@Crimsonorblue22 Which coach? I'm having trouble understanding your post.
