@jayballer54 Mitch took a step backwards for sure. He just doesn't seem to be able to play defense without fouling.

He will never be Perry. I don't think anyone was saying that. The point was how will he be utilized, and the stretch 4 comes to mind. Look up in the KU dictionary the term "stretch 4", and there's a picture of Perry. So, the comparison is not Perry vs. mitch, but stretch 4 to stretch 4. Mitch is not a back to the basket scorer. He has a penchant for leaving his feet, and going for the block at the slightest twitch. He routinely leaves his man open in the paint to go for blocks. No doubt he has a long way to go. BUT, that first half against Oakland gives me hope that he is developing into a real rotation guy. No doubt when the competition gets better, the lack of athleticism will show up, and hopefully, he'll learn to play smarter to overcome that disadvantage. Still, he is miles further along than what he showed last year, with a quantum leap the last several games. Truthfully, I wouldn't have given a plug nickel for what I saw last year, and the first few games this year ...so my enthusiasm comes from watching him improve.
@jaybate-1.0 BTW, I was hoping you would comment on the Van Allen belt. I figured only you would get that.
@HawkChamp Jayhawkfantoo was all over this, and the Billy suspension accelerated the learning curve. I don't think he is a Jamari, either. His defense sure needs work, but he is coming along much faster than I ever thought was possible. I think he is going to be a real asset to the team.
@jaybate-1.0 I was flat shocked how good Mitch looked recently. It was such a quantum leap from what he had done before, it made me believe he could really be a contributing factor. The Perry comparison is absolutely perfect.
@jaybate-1.0 Can we break through with 1 real big in Doke? Or is not having two great bigs our Van Allen Belt that prevents a Final Four? I think not. I think Coach Self adapts his play style to the roster he has. Perry was tried as a hi-lo back to the basket scorer, and got eaten alive, so they turned him into an away from the basket scorer. If we have two great bigs, I imagine Coach will run hi-lo.
@jaybate-1.0 He runs a 4.4 in the 40. At 260 lbs.
@HawkChamp I mean...come on. One guy doesn't like the way a guy phrased a sentence, and we call him a racist???? In that case, I guess my mother is a racist because she can't tolerate grammatical errors!?! I am 100% positive if HEM moved to Houston, he would cringe a million times a day the way that people talked. That doesn't make him hate black people. If you heard me talk, I sound a hell of alot more like Coach Davis than I do Coach Self. Now, I don't normally defend HEM but the bit about "white privilege" made me almost throw up. Enough. Please lock the thread.
PLEASE LOCK THIS THREAD. Unbelievable.
@Texas-Hawk-10 Exactly.
@KUSTEVE U2. I have prepared myself to consume mass quantities.
Davis sounds like he is a coach in the 3rd Ward in Houston. Ed Orgeron sounds like a coach in Baton Rouge. Are accents and colloquialisms now considered bad? I guess Bum Phillips could be included in that too. Heck, I might be in trouble, too.
@approxinfinity Shania is a hottie. She can mispronounce words all day as long as she bats her eyes at me...
@cragarhawk You listen to the singing? I simply leer...
**Nothing from nothing leaves nothing...
You gotta drive nothing if you wanna be with me,
Nothing from nothing leaves nothing
You gotta drive nothing if you want to be with me....**
**I'm not trying to be your hero,
But driving that Charger was a zero..too cold for me...
I'm not trying to be your highness,
But a bus pass woulda been finest,
Cause a DNP is a minus too low to see...yeah**
**Nothing from nothing leaves nothing,
And I'm not eatin' stuffing- believe you me,
Don't you remember I told ya,
I'm a soldier on the war on Charger poverty ....**
BTW, South Dakota St beat Iowa today.
@BShark I'll play him next game on Draft Kings. I've been cleaning up with Mario starting in Memphis.
@BeddieKU23 Does he still get the money promised if he was hurt? Is Misery still going to pay him?
@BeddieKU23 Hot diggity dog..
@mayjay Manute had a tape worm. A stiff wind would knock him over.
@kjayhawks That video on De Sousa tells alot. He doesn't take one shot outside of the paint ... not one. He operates exclusively in the paint. They won't have to scream at him to go to the boards - he lives off the boards. The kid is a complete team player, from passing when he is out of position, to massive effort to grab rebounds. IMHO, he will do more for this team than a Billy Preston. No doubt Billy could beat him in a 3 point shooting contest, and Billy can do things De Sousa might not ever be able to do. But this team desperately needs someone that knows how to get a rebound, is willing to get in the paint and mix it up, and plays smart basketball. And that's De Sousa's game.
@JayHawkFanToo If the B12 conference could get 3 or 4 teams into the Sweet 16, then they could overcome the "paper tiger" moniker. It's kind of hard for me to swallow how great the conference is when most of the time, it's only us in the Sweet 16. But, maybe this year could be different.

When Sivio gets here he instantly becomes:
- Our best rebounder...
- Our best passer on the frontline ...
- Our most skilled big with the ball ...
- He has a variety of ways to score - he might not dunk it as much, but he will block as many shots as Doke, and he will hit his free throws.
This is not some kid that picked up a basketball 3 years ago - he has been playing for 10 years, and his game has a refinement you don't see in American players that often. I believe he will have several double digit rebound games because he is absolutely tenacious on the boards. Don't sell this guy short, or think he's going to be an end gamer bench warmer. This guy might be the best rebounder we've had in quite a while.
@JayHawkFanToo BTW, T Tech beat 20th ranked Northwestern by 35, and OU and TCU look tough as a boot, so maybe the B12 isn't as down as much as originally thought.
@JayHawkFanToo Every morning, my first internet stop is to see if Preston is in or out. I can't express in words how important he could be to our chances this year.
@wrwlumpy Ingenious. The Gracie Allen reference for Trip Boy ... that is brilliant.
@jayballer54 Wow...go Red Raiders !!!
@HighEliteMajor Yes sir. He drives me nuts because he leaves his feet every play.
@JayHawkFanToo At the first quiver of movement, he jumps like a frog into the opposing player. Drives me crazy. He is so set on trying to block every shot, he falls for any ball fake. I just wish he would keep his feet planted, and stay in front of the guy. I'll bet you 90% of his fouls are commited by missed blocked shots.
Mario Chalmers - 6 points/4 rbs/8 assts/4 steals last night. Successful night? ABSOLUTELY! He shot 1 for 7, and still had an excellent night. When you look at Devonte, the big question is does our offense run smoothly? As much of an optimist as I am about KU, I never thought we would bury SDST like we did. It reminded me of the UCLA game a couple years back, when we just buried them. The depth is very scary, as we held a 30 point lead, and could barely field a complete team. But, Devonte's 11 assists made that offense flow- the points will come ...we have to be patient.
@wissox He is thinking too much. He will relax, and will flat scorch the nets when he does. Whether he hits 25 or 12, the assists are the constant. That offensive display last night was spectacular, which is what happens when your point guard drops 12 dimes.
@approxinfinity They just had a story out this week about the end of the one and done. Under the proposal that is floating around now, high schoolers could go straight into the NBA, and if they go to college, they have to stay two years. Me likey.
@approxinfinity Too funny...lol. It was me putting the signature line in the "about me" box. My 6th grade education comes in handy.
@KUSTEVE It MAGICALLY REAPPEARED!!!!!! Oh wait....it was "operator error". I had it in the about me section instead of the signature box. So it was just me. Thank Heavens I got to the bottom of it - there's an emotional support squirrel out there that needs rescuing.
@Crimsonorblue22 Are you suggesting "operator error" ? This is what my tag line says:
Looking to improve that 82.7 % prediction record this year. TGIF. In other news, a man is being evicted in Clearwater, Fl due to the fact he never revealed he had an emotional support squirrel.
I have waited for days to tell all of you about the emotional support squirrel. Free my taglines!
@approxinfinity Hey, my tag line has disappeared. Help!
@wissox I thought it was funny. My mother has done that her whole life with pronunciation, spelling, paragraphs, and other grammatical mistakes, so I'm used to it.
@wissox Your inner teacher led you to write that. I dub you ..."The Paragraph Whisperer"...
@kjayhawks Daum pulled Doke out of the paint chasing him all over the place, so I think he gets a pass for the low rebound totals in my books. Doke gets an A++++ on offense...some of his moves were really nice, quick agile moves. The up and under move was brilliant, he made a nice semi-hook with the left hand, and made several other back to the basket moves. He is gaining confidence every game, and the footwork is getting better and better.
DG will find his shot, but until he does, 11 dimes are a-ok with me.
I thought we saw a glimmer of why Newman is considered to be so good. That move that broke ankles to the basket was a work of art. I thought he played more relaxed- he had a pull up jumper in the lane that was sweeeeet ( in contrast to his heavily contested drives to the basket against 'Tucky). His outside shot looked a lot cleaner, confident, and relaxed. He is the guy that could really take over a game for us if need be, and I am feeling better about him after this game.
Svi and Vick both played amazing. Now, I want to see consistency. Do it every game, guys. It's right there for you.
Garrett is just a defensive stud, man. Just like a blanket. 4 steals...4 assists... now, we have to teach him to be aggressive going to the basket- he is playing too timid on offense.
For all the Lightfoot lovers, the 4 blocks bode well, along with the near 3 pointer shot. For those of us still hedging our bets, we also saw dumb, dumb fouls. This guy has to foul everytime he defends, it seems.
Clay Young - Pat on the back for not screwing up too much. However, the next time someone rifles a pass to you at the basket, if you don't shoot it, I'm going to kick your butt. Come on, man. Grow a pair. It's a 3 foot shot. If it gets blocked, get it back, and go up with it again. Play to win. The goal is to score.
@BShark I don't do the chat because everybody else's tv signal is about a minute faster than my internet stream. So, it spoils the surprise.
I've been thinking about how to get Doke to shoot better from the free throw line, and I think I have it solved. Doke is shooting 90% from the field. Every basket he makes is contested every time. So, lets have a couple of our players double team him at the foul line.
We have playing time to offer. The highest ranked on 24/7 is Grimes at 17, and the lowest rated is De Sousa at 31. That's the sweet spot - guys that might not rush to the NBA after a year. Let those 4 hit their sophomore years, and we might be in the running for back to back national championships.
@BShark That's what I'm thinking. Wow... talk about no depth...
Is Billy gone?
@mayjay The "pearls to swine" verse would appear to be in order.
@cragarhawk Josh Jackson was brilliant his first year. Except for the final game, Wigs was excellent in his year. Embiid was just plain amazing. McLemore, Oubre, and Xavier Henry all had stand out first years. We're starting to build quite a resume of successful one and dones that put that old "one and dones don't do well at KU" narrative to bed. It's all about playing time. The one and dones that failed couldn't get on the court. The freshmen that start put up numbers. No doubt they would be better with more seasoning, but I think every narrative about one and dones and KU will be broken next year. We're getting very talented players coming in...guys that can put up some really great numbers. By the time the tournament begins next year, we could have the best team since 2008.
So if we have Grimes, then we need to get Langford..."Romeo, Romeo, what art thou, Romeo?"
