Prediction Time? • Oct 28, 2016 09:20 PM

@Kcmatt7 Yeah, I know. I kinda felt like that about the game before last but they turned it over so many dang times

Update, JoJo • Oct 28, 2016 09:18 PM

@Kcmatt7 You're right man. Perry is no NBA 3, needs to add size, strength and a mean streak wouldnt go amiss either. He could make a team given time.

Its funny cuz I remember his junior year saying things like " Perry soft" and all that. Guys got skills to play.

Update, JoJo • Oct 28, 2016 09:15 PM

@REHawk yeah man, but Philly dont have any good guards. Im hoping the Man. makes some decisions and trades for some better than average guards. Oh! How about Mario Chalmers when he comes back!? Yah, he's no CP3 or Curry or Westbrook but still, he's better than anyone they have now.

Update, JoJo • Oct 28, 2016 09:13 PM

I got both Wiggs and JoJo's signatures on my Jayhawk basketball. Im keeping that thing, like, forever.

Prediction Time? • Oct 28, 2016 09:11 PM

@Kcmatt7 Yep, pretty much.

@Ralph Hilarious!!

@Kcmatt7 My thoughts exactly.

@jaybate-1.0 I dont think Shaka is going to beat Self at all while he is at Texas

@BeddieKU23 Funny thing is KSU wont run the table on that schedule.

Im really pulling for T Rob to stay at the Lakers. I just saw that their 7 ft center from China , Li, has asked for his release and the Lakers granted that. So, the decision remains for the Lakers to decide who will get their final spot. MWP or T Rob.

Personally, I think the play here would be to keep MWP formerly known as Ron Artest on the bench as a player/coach and then give the final roster spot to T Rob who is younger, has more to contribute.

Rock Chalk T Rob!

Coach Self is Mr Consistency • Oct 24, 2016 04:41 PM

When we think of consistent basketball styles, certain coaches always come to mind. I wanted to test these impressionistic and possibly scattershot notions, so I decided to look at five years' worth of actual college basketball performance.

Here's what I found: Kansas coach Bill Self has been the most stylistically consistent coach in major conference basketball over that time, with Virginia's Tony Bennett placing a close second. Perhaps it would be more accurate to say these two have been stylistically predictable.

EDITOR'S PICKS

The can't-miss, must-see games of this college hoops season
With college hoops a few weeks away, it's a good time to know those games you need to see. So get your calendars. You'll want to mark these down.

Ask Calipari: Not even Duke can do what Kentucky does
John Calipari is the godfather of one-and-done. Now every school is doing it. "It took Duke to do it for it to become OK," he says. Calipari has a message: You'll never do it as well as Kentucky.

How experience (or lack of) will shape this college hoops season
Wisconsin has its whole team back; Kentucky is living its usual one-and-done life. Which teams have the most experience? Which have the least? It's time to look at how, and if, any of it matters.
Whichever terminology you prefer, the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" approach works pretty well for Self and Bennett. Since the 2011-12 season, Kansas and Virginia have won a combined 77 percent of their conference games. In the cases of the Jayhawks and the Cavaliers, stylistic consistency isn't a scouting advantage for opponents as much as it is a hallmark of quality.

For example, this season, it's aberrantly likely that KU will average 68 possessions per 40 minutes in Big 12 play, while the Hoos will devote 30 percent of their shot attempts, give or take, to 3-point tries. Does that kind of advanced knowledge give future opponents an advantage? Not really, particularly not the bit about the Jayhawks' tempo.

Instead, these style constants tell us simply that both Self and Bennett found approaches that worked, stuck with those methods and, not least, felt confident enough across five distinct rosters to stay the course systemically. Clearly, this is one path to success in college basketball.

Then again, the reigning national champion, Villanova's Jay Wright, rates out as very close to the opposite extreme in terms of stylistic consistency. Over the past five seasons, we've seen Villanova shoot a ton of 3s (2014-15), but we've also seen the Wildcats show a Virginia-level orientation toward the interior (2011-12). Speaking of 2011-12, that was the campaign in which Villanova emphasized going after offensive rebound opportunities, an approach that was but a distant memory during last season's guard-oriented national championship run.

It's fair to say that where style constancy is concerned, there's more than one way to get the job done. When a coach changes his spots and it works, we say he is "adapting to his personnel." When a coach sticks with what works, we say he's a "system coach." There's room at the college hoops table for both types of success.

Measuring consistency in style

There are 38 major conference coaches who have been in their present positions for five or more seasons, as well as two other veteran head coaches (Kevin Stallings and Jamie Dixon) who just switched jobs within the major conference firmament. This gives us a population of 40 coaches, and those guys would be the first to say that the degree of control they exercise over what their teams do on the court is far from total.

Even so, there are certain facets of the game commonly recognized as bearing a coach's signature. I enlisted three of those facets to help me get my arms around this matter of predictability in hoops methods since 2011-12. Bear in mind that I looked at conference games only, in order to remove any static attributable to these coaches' wildly differing approaches toward scheduling.

Pace

In terms of possessions per 40 minutes, your most consistent performer in major conference basketball is Oregon's Dana Altman. The Ducks' head coach is followed closely in this regard by Indiana's Tom Crean and by the aforementioned Self.

Naturally, the game itself has accelerated in the wake of the NCAA's shortening the shot clock to 30 seconds prior to the 2015-16 season. Nevertheless, that was a change that impacted all coaches equally, and guys such as Altman and Crean have been more predictable under both types of clock than their peers, when it comes to tempo. Oregon will presumably play the game at a clip equivalent to 69 possessions per regulation contest, with the Hoosiers clocking in at 67 (the five-year average is 65.2).

Washington coach Lorenzo Romar is among the least consistent coaches when it comes to pace of play. Chris Williams/Icon Sportswire
The least consistent on pace: Washington's Lorenzo Romar, Pittsburgh's Kevin Stallings and Xavier's Chris Mack.

3-point tries

Let's define a coach's consistency in perimeter orientation as steadiness in the percentage of attempts launched from behind the 3-point line. On this front, your winner is Bennett, who barely edges Colorado's Tad Boyle as No. 1 for consistency (with Florida State's Leonard Hamilton finishing third). There is a very good chance that this season Virginia will devote between 28 and 32 percent of its attempts to 3-pointers.

The least consistent on 3-point tries: Oklahoma's Lon Kruger, Ole Miss' Andy Kennedy and Villanova's Wright.

Rebound ratio

Coaches can't exercise total control over how well their teams rebound, of course, but what they can do is place greater or lesser emphasis on attacking the offensive glass. I like to measure this orientation, or lack thereof, as a simple ratio between a team's offensive and defensive rebound percentages.

When it comes to maintaining the level of exertion on the offensive boards, Arizona's Sean Miller stands alone. Actually, I might like this rebounding-ratio list best of all in terms of confirming prior assumptions. Your leaders here are Miller, Iowa's Fran McCaffery and NC State's Mark Gottfried, with Tom Izzo (duh) just missing out on ranking among the top three.

Iowa coach Fran McCaffery's teams have consistent rebounding numbers. AP Photo/Charlie Neibergall
The least consistent on rebound ratio: Seton Hall's Kevin Willard, Villanova's Wright and Texas A&M's Billy Kennedy.

Add up all three categories, and Self -- No. 3 in consistency in pace, No. 9 in 3-point tries and No. 14 in rebound ratio -- comes out on top. Congratulations, Coach Self. You, sir, are a credit to steadiness of purpose, as amply demonstrated by that whole historically unbelievable streak thing.

Here are the full results for consistency and/or predictability among the coaching ranks:

@Crimsonorblue22 Which is funny considering his ties to OU.

@Crimsonorblue22 Yeah, I'll concede that point. Ok, how bout this. He respects KU and the unmatchable tradition we have.

Practice tidbits from Fran again. • Oct 24, 2016 04:23 PM

@BeddieKU23 I think Fran actually likes KU.

@jaybate-1.0 They lose all the rest. Destined to be football bottom dwellers for the foreseeable future

@jaybate-1.0 Wow. That is definitely something I hadnt thought possible. You make an excellent case about Coach Self going to Duke after Coach K hangs 'em up.

I ask you this in return. Say coach K retires in 5 years and during that time KU wins another title and maintains .820, do you still think Coach Self would bail for Duke?

I personally dont believe it will happen at all, even if Coach K retired today.
Coach Self is a lifer at KU unless Pop retires and the Spur's come calling...

Perry and Wayne • Oct 23, 2016 03:24 PM

@Texas-Hawk-10 I dont think we should count Chalmers out just yet.

PS. anyone know what happened to Drew Gooden? I see he isnt with the Wiz anymore.

Perry and Wayne • Oct 23, 2016 03:22 PM

@Crimsonorblue22 Dammit dammit dammit!

More Embiid • Oct 22, 2016 06:33 PM

Ok KU peeps. Here is some good discussion material on our fearless Lion hunter Joel.

Personally, I am way biased and not afraid to admit it. I think JoJo IS the Rookie of the Year this year but actually a couple of these guys have good points.

  1. Fact or Fiction: Joel Embiid should be the favorite for Rookie of the Year.

Elhassan: Fiction. In a sense, Simmons' injury makes the handling of Embiid with care an even bigger priority. That means closely monitoring his minutes per game and perhaps even his games played. Since the winner of rookie of the year is usually the guy who led rookies in scoring, there's a strong chance through the monitoring mechanisms that Embiid will not play long enough to produce per game averages to secure the award. But the talent is definitely there!

Haberstroh: Fiction. He's averaging a monstrous 26.3 points and 14 rebounds per 36 minutes in the preseason so far but I'm erring on the side of caution here. My guess is he'd need about 20-25 minutes per game and at least 60 games played to qualify, and I'm going to take the under. My darkhorse is Jamal Murray in the Mile High City.

Doolittle: Fiction. He's the best rookie I've seen but I think it'll be one of those deals where he'll put up the best metrics but not get enough overall minutes to get the actual award. Someone like Buddy Hield or Kris Dunn will put up big superficial numbers in a larger role and get the votes.

Engelmann: ( suck it Engelmann, you hater ) Fiction. I'm not crazy about Embiid due to his extensive injury history. Yes, with Simmons injured there now isn't a clear favorite for ROY, as the No. 2 pick, Brandon Ingram, doesn't seem completely NBA-ready yet. I agree with the Vegas bookmakers, though, who give the edge to Kris Dunn and Buddy Hield.

Pelton: Fiction. I think he's a strong contender, but I'm not even sure he's the favorite on his own team given Dario Saric is more likely to play big minutes and more games. If you could guarantee me Embiid would stay healthy all year, I might make him the favorite, but nobody can guarantee that.

Arizona • Oct 22, 2016 06:17 PM

@Crimsonorblue22 interesting

Embiid • Oct 22, 2016 06:15 PM

@HawkChamp Yep. 40 - 0

Embiid • Oct 22, 2016 06:13 PM

@Crimsonorblue22 That was awesome. Hesitation step just before fake hand off then blew by Whiteside I think it was, easy lay up.

I was just thinking about this today. Embiid could be an Olajuwon type player soooo easily. The game comes so easy to him, its scary. Heck, he could even do stuff like Wilt. Lead the league in blocks and rebounds one year. Lead the league in points and assists another year. Just bonkers!

Embiid • Oct 21, 2016 09:01 PM

@Crimsonorblue22 That second one is even better! JoJo should do stand up comedy in his spare time.

Embiid • Oct 21, 2016 08:58 PM

Road games and blue bloods • Oct 18, 2016 01:58 AM

@wissoxfan83 Fascinating. You have a great point there. I never really thought about it much.

Mason on Cousy list • Oct 18, 2016 01:55 AM

@chriz No. Frank is our #1 PG. DG plays that spot, thats for sure. My guess is DG gets on the Cousy list as well at some point. After all, this is a pre-season list.

@jaybate-1.0 Can Bill Self beat Coach K at the 4-1 game?

@KansasComet Wont be an issue this year.

Malik Newman • Oct 17, 2016 11:07 PM

If DG has a break out great year this year, he is gone for the League.

The B12 will not expand in the near future • Oct 17, 2016 11:03 PM

@kjayhawks I thought it was a stupid decision. Im sure it was mostly motivated by $$$. But will I be surprised when the Big 12 gets dissolved and KU moves to one of the more eastern time zone power conferences?

Regardless what happens to the conference, KU will be just fine. Thats all I really care about.

Malik Newman • Oct 17, 2016 03:10 PM

@Statmachine Id bet on that!

Oubre • Oct 17, 2016 03:09 PM

@drgnslayr Coolest Cat to wear KU colors? My pick is Kevin Young. Met him in the autograph line, dude is legit real and his smile is infectious. His hair is Epic!

Second Favorite, Joel Embiid. Also met him in the autograph line. Made him laugh and drop my ball when I questioned him on his Lion spear slaying. :laughing:

Oubre • Oct 17, 2016 03:06 PM

@Statmachine Dammit, Cliff just cant catch a break.

Oubre • Oct 17, 2016 03:05 PM

@JayHawkFanToo Amen to that! Walking into the Lions den of Rupp for a Pro game with KU colors on!? Yeah, Brass ones.

@benshawks08 JJ played 4 in highschool and on the AAU circuit. Its not like he hasnt done it before. If Coach Self is serious about having a line up like 1 Frank 2 DG 3 SVI 4 JJ 5 Bragg, then Im sure he can get those guys ready for that. He is the best coach in Div 1.

Edit ---- silly me, they still have two years left.

Here's a thought I just had.

This is Joel's and Wiggins last year of their first contract, right?
SO, bearing that in mind. Where does everyone think they will sign next season considering all the player movements, trades, etc that happen.

I think Wiggs is set in Minnesota. They are becoming a legit post season threat in the west. Slowly but surely, they remind me of OKC and Goldenstate in their young, rebuilding years. That tandem of Wiggs and Towns will surely be great.

About JoJo. The 76ers are poised to yet again sniff the bottom of the NBA win,loss totals. If JoJo remains healthy and records stats that get him at very least, All Star consideration and rookie of the year consideration. Would another team be tempted to lure him away?
Philly doesnt have any guards. They all suck. I admit to being intrigued by the Okafor and Embiid tandem down low. Ben Simmons too, when he can play. But they have nobody in the back court that can help them break .500 Not One!
If Im JoJo and Im healthy after this break out season, I would seriously consider other options.

@kjayhawks I thought it was gonna be a 30 pt loss for KU...guess I was wrong.

AH well, I did say that 1-11 would be an improvement on last year

Embiid starts continued • Oct 16, 2016 12:44 PM

@Crimsonorblue22 I read that too. Come on Marcus! Same team, same team! Maybe it was just in good fun and he got T'd up for it. Cuz Marcus knows JoJo is a Jayhawk too.

Lagerald vs Svi • Oct 16, 2016 12:18 AM

@Crimsonorblue22 Me too!! Kids a brick wall, with steel reinforcement. I dont think there is a Marcus Smart type player in the league this year...someone who I really want to see get knocked on his butt.

Man, that screen on Flopper by Kev Young was Epic. I'll never forget that stuff!!

@jaybate-1.0 JJ might have a 36% trey gun up his sleeve.

@jaybate-1.0 Thats a question that is well above my head. If I have to guess though, Im going with KU getting back into the Nike Shoe monopoly. US Nike. US Money. Better top OAD recruiting dump trucks. the list goes on. Especially if/when KU goes to the Big10 if/when the Big 12 dissolves

Embiid starts continued • Oct 15, 2016 06:45 PM

@Statmachine Yep. JoJo is a clear front runner for ROY and its sooo early.

True. the 76ers dont have guards. Swiss cheese would do better out there.

I wonder how long the top brass will hold down JoJo's minutes?

I also wonder if they are planning on doing regularly scheduled xrays or CT's or MRI's of JoJos foot. Radiation is nothing to be played around with. But used in small doses, used sparingly, it could provide better info on how his foot is holding up than by just "how does it feel" during treatments and workouts and games etc.

They put so much time and money and risk into getting Joel healthy, I would have to guess they will scan his foot again before the NBA season starts.

Oubre • Oct 15, 2016 06:34 PM
