@HighEliteMajor thanks for mentioning Greene's assist to Ellis after pushing the ball and driving to the hoop. I was impressed.
It looks like that's part of the plan now: Selden brought the ball up some as well. Maybe Self wants to get across half court faster and give the defense less time to set up, so he's saying "if you have the ball, push it." Maybe Embiid thought that meant him too :)
I like the idea, since it gives the defense less time to set up the press and less time to transition to half court defense. Sort of an embryonic secondary break.
By the way, can anyone recall exactly why Self doesn't like the secondary break? If he thinks it's too turnover prone, that's not an argument anymore...
@jaybate 1.0 said: " in a worst case scenario of Embiid and Black being finished, Traylor and Lucas and Wesley and Mickelson can be pressed into duty."
Mickelson is a mandatory redshirt because he transferred in. For bigs we would have Ellis, Traylor, Lucas and Wesley in that order, unless Coach wanted to start a true 5 in which case it would be Ellis, Lucas and Traylor. Lucas is a good rebounder anyway.
I'm not going to lose sleep over Embiid until I see him not playing or not playing the same way.
@approxinfinity Could we start another thread? It takes me awhile to load everything to get to the bottom, and I do enjoy the quotes. How about a category and change the thread every month?
@drgnslayr Which one said (twice) that Tharpe penetrated and dished to Wiggins early in the game, when it was Ellis? He just kept applying his cue cards to the game whether they fit reality or not.
@Kip_McSmithers Thanks, Kip. So to play second semester elsewhere next year, AWIII needed to enroll there before semester started.
@Crimsonorblue22 Oh, is that right? OK, I take it back. Does this mean White could transfer and play second semester next year? I think it does, but I just found out I can be wrong :)
@MoonwalkMafia If it's a "done deal", White shouldn't have played at all second semester. A few minutes on the floor and he lost an extra semester of eligibility.
Right now, he has no good choice: either redshirt here and hope for minutes someday, or transfer and redshirt. Maybe he's waiting to see if Greene stays...
Just the fact that Greene was made available to the media shows a degree of trust. Everyone knew he would get questions about playing time and the temptation to transfer.
Now, when is White going to be made available to the media?
@icthawkfan316 you're back! Love it. Post, post, post.
@KUSTEVE "Embeast" is great! Or should it be "Embiist", I'm not sure. Anyway, great find.
@KUSTEVE Not saying you're wrong, but somebody had to pick the underdog so the talking heads could keep talking. Just the way it works...
Joel Embiid's latest tweet: "Aaron Rodgers stopped by today to watch practice and show me how to do Backflips".
I like this guy's sense of humor!
OK, so nobody ever put two dollar signs followed by a double quote -- Ya hear?
@ParisHawk Looks like two dollar signs become one.
How about one dollar sign followed by a quote?
Here goes: $"
Now testing two dollar signs without a double quote: $$
@{posts.username} I did it again! What about two dollar signs?
@ParisHawk Now testing "$$". Will this mess up too?
The next reply will test putting two dollar signs followed by a double quote:
$ $ "
without the spaces.
This is what messed up a thread the other day, I think.
@Blown I am sorry to read about your family tragedy and the effect it had on your life, and I am sorry that I unwittingly brought them to mind.
@Blown Have you thought about transferring?
Wow, how did I mess up this thread??? I must have gotten confused about which part of my anatomy does what...
redacted
@drgnslayr Our previous home loss was pretty darn recent, and there is that back flip.
I say the team will be flippin' ready to play OSU!
@drgnslayr Total agreement with you, first that Conference title #10 is a worthy goal, and second that Self had no choice but to go after all the best players this year because so many last year's players left.
Where choice comes in is now: is Self recruiting potential OADs for next year, when he could be recruiting top "developmental" players? The answer seems to be yes.
@drgnslayr I think "brown points" are what you earn when you don't deserve "brownie points" ;)
@Wishawk "nip the butt" -- not bad.
@jaybate 1.0 I looked up Adidas in Wikipedia: it appears the name comes from the founder Adi Dassler, Adi being short for Adolf.
So KU is wearing uniforms from a company named after a Nazi Party member called Adolf. At least it's the other Adolf...
Folks, I haven't seen the game yet but I assume it was televised and covered by national and local media. In that case, why all the pictures of Georgetown playing ISU?
@jaybate 1.0 "The goal of some coaches that have to compete against Self and KU appears to be to try to get Embiid to the pros after this season, so they don't have to face him next season." Excellent point!
Do you remember the Coneheads from SNL? They tried to cover up their alien origin by saying "We're from France". In 2014, they would probably say "We're from Cameroon, and by the way we killed lions with our bare hands." Embiid may never play in the NBA, he'll just jump back in his flying saucer.
As jaybate posted on the cjonline live blog:
"The pain in Kane is mainly in the brain."
PHOF!
ISU will be calling on Karma to be a killer B.
ISU players may try to goad Embiid into throwing another elbow.
Let's hope that amid the madness a basketball game breaks out.
Maybe it's because I live outside the US: I can't fathom anybody worrying about calling Tarik and Jamari "Black". It's a play on the word "Black", which is not pejorative. Using the other last name involves no word play and would make readers wonder what the heck KUSTEVE is talking about.
@tundrahok There are lots of situations where ouside factors determine how bad the consequences are. Involuntary manslaughter: depends on whether someone dies. Accessory before the fact: you help a guy prepare to steal and he shoots a policeman. Drinking and driving. Smoking.
"Not fair" happens a lot, and more to some people than others. It's just not fair...
@HighEliteMajor I'd like Izzo, Hoiberg and Coach K as color guys.
@jaybate 1.0 "a preferred site experience". No lie.
You may be talking more about technical quality, but content is terrific too.
@HighEliteMajor I agree, but there is one factor specific to Embiid: his newness to basketball and American culture in general. Another year in college could help him more than it would Smart or many other players.
How much should that factor count? No idea.
How much does it count in Embiid's mind? Seems like psychologically he's in no rush to go pro, unlike Wiggins.
I just finished watching the game. Big 12 road win against a very good offensive team, that's the big thing.
Every positive seems counterbalanced by a negative:
This brutal schedule may leave scars, mainly an underdeveloped bench lacking in confidence and at worst tuning out. Lots and lots of coaching/coaxing to be done right now and in the days ahead, for the sake of this year's team and next year's...
@iowajayhawk2005 Did you mean that seriously? I am going home to watch the game and I want to know if I should like JB's commentary or not...
HEY I just figured out something: Jay Bilas = JB = jb = jaybate! We've never seen them together either! The same guy goes long on KUBuckets and short on Twitter, pretends to hate Coach K here and love him there.
Someone needs to pull down Bilas' pants and check when was the last time he changed his drawers.
Question: who blocks out the best on this team? Leave out Embiid, he's busy bothering shots.
The thing that made me most cringe against SDSU was gimmes after Embiid blocks because the other SDSU big was all alone under the basket.
drgnslayr, magnificent post from beginning to end. One positive already!
HEM said: "This mismanagement, if it continues, will significantly decrease the chances of KU winning a national title. And that, my friends, is all that matters."
In that case nothing matters, because we are not going to win that title.
Big 12 title #10 is still on the table: that's it. If we fall out of the Big 12 race, then start rebuilding: play next year's players.
Embiid needs to stop blocking like Withey: just swat the ball out of bounds.
Second half SDSU's best play was to score after an Embiid block.
No reason to keep the ball in bounds if it's 3 on 1 in the paint...
I'm hijacking this thread, sorry, but Brannen Greene â@b_greene14 tweeted 2 hours ago:
"If I said it, I meant it. There's no way around it."
What the heck could that mean??
@approxinfinity I seem to remember Self saying some years ago that defense could be taught, so he recruited offense and taught defense. I'm sure that was a simplification, if not a smokescreen.
@jaybate 1.0 "Savigny-lès-Beaune". Rillettes, au pluriel.
Ciel!
Will we win them all at Allen?
Win out at home and go 5-4 on the road and we're at 14-4.
Lose even once at home and we need to win 6 out of 9 on the road.
Got to win at Allen.
Merry Christmas to all!
@JayHawkFanToo thanks, but in that case why all the talk about Coach Self being "surprised" the twins declared for the draft?
