@BeddieKU23 Doubtful.

But I think we have this one in the bag imo. If there is PT, Langford is a Hawk. Just say the magic words Bill. "I guarantee you a starting position." And then uncross your fingers and mumble under your breath so you feel better "if you earn it."

THE SKY WASN'T FALLING β€’ Feb 14, 2018 04:35 PM

I definitely get the sense that Graham has regressed in his ability to finish at the rim through contact or not. Just seems like a lot of close range shots don't go in for him, reminds me of how spoiled we were having Frank last year. I definitely think part of it is his iron man minutes being played. I also think he tries a little too hard with the throwing his head back, etc., to make it look like he was fouled and takes his head off of the hoop that might be playing a factor in it. Has anyone else noticed that he doesn't finish well near the hoop the past few months?

Who knows, perhaps its just bad luck and it will even out at some point which would be awesome and would certainly come in handy here down the stretch and in tourney time.

#14 is still within reach β€’ Feb 14, 2018 12:53 PM

@BeddieKU23 You're missing a few games. KU's last game is at OK State and TTech's last game is at home against TCU. Tech's remaining schedule is easier then ours in my opinion.

Are We Into "Cancer" Territory With Newman? β€’ Feb 12, 2018 02:28 AM

Unfortunately the Baylor game was one of the only games this year I did not DVR so unfortunately I can't go back and watch the interaction referred to in the OP. Is anyone tech savvy enough to find a way to post it here so we can all see it? Without actually seeing it, it would be tough for me to comment on it but will try. The pot thing scares me a ton and do think it could be a huge factor in some of the players' actions. I saw it happen to teammates of mine in college. I've seen guys a semester away from graduating choose weed over going to class and getting the last few credits needed to graduate. Vick sticks out like a sore thumb to me and it definitely seems like there is something extra curricular going on. It may not be weed but it very well could be. Who is Vick's roomate? Or Newmans? Does anyone know? I wonder if there is anything we can deduce from that.

For what its worth, I recall hearing that DG and Newman were becoming pretty tight last year and some were thinking that it might be enough to lure DG back for his senior season. It would mean there was a change of events if the speculation in prior posts that DG is on "Team Self/Jayhawks" and Newman is on "Team Selfish" is correct.

Lastly, nobody has mentioned it but another piece of info that may be applicable to the whole picture is the apparent change in recruiting that we've seen over the last few weeks. We now have Agbaji signed up for next year and still pushing hard for Langford. It seems like Self has no doubt there will be spots for both. To me, it sounds like no Vick and no Newman next year which ties into a lot of the posts made in this thread.

We already have plenty of sit-down defenders, sitting down as the other team drives right past them. I think he meant "shut-down" defender which is hopefully what he will become because this team can badly use it.

I'm in the camp that thinks Dotson will be too good to keep out of the starting lineup. His ball handling and driving ability will be the best on the team by far.

Ornithophobia β€’ Jan 24, 2018 12:54 AM

Trae Young apparently has Ornithophobia which is an irrational fear of birds. Its no wonder he didn't decide to become a Jayhawk.

"Who Wears Short Shorts??" β€’ Jan 18, 2018 08:52 PM

Garrett, Newman, and Vick wear short shorts.

If I was more tech savy I would add the music video for the classic song here.

Anyway, I didn't see any other topics about it but did you guys notice those short shorts that these three guys are wearing out there? They combine it with tight fitting compression legging thing that still goes below the knee. Is this what the kids are wearing these days?? I haven't noticed the style on any other teams yet but honestly haven't looked all that close. It started with Garrett, then Newman started doing it, and now Vick.

I dunno, shorts to at least the knee was always the style while I was growing up. Short shorts meant someone could justifiably question someone's man card status. I have wondered if there was any correlation between this being Self's perceived softest team ever (excluding the anomaly we saw in the 2nd half against WV) and this short short fad on display out there.

Self's Worst Team at KU β€’ Jan 03, 2018 02:20 PM

dylans said:

So should we jump ship?!? I’m thinking these kids are going to need our support. The big12 is pretty tough!

Love them when they win, love them when they lose with effort.

Key words, "with effort." They aren't putting forth the effort needed to win. Being out rebounded, out hustled, can't defend, those are effort issues. Nobody who watched that game last night said "wow, KU really played hard but the other team just made so many tough shots, nothing they could have done."

Exposed again β€’ Jan 03, 2018 02:16 PM

Svi is the king of the bonehead play, I lose count of the number of times he makes them. Sure he makes some nice shots but I really wonder if he actually gives up an equal number, if not more, points on the defensive side and with turnovers. The two charges, the drive to the hoop he fumbles out of bounds, the inbounds pass directly to the TT player who quickly passes to a teammate for a three. So frustrating, especially from a senior. Its nuts.

Did you guys hear that stat that Kansas has the fewest number of made free throws in the ENTIRE NATION?!?! Good lord! Simply amazing.

I think KU has the talent to win but at this point in time the biggest question is their effort. They are getting killed on defense and rebounding and a large part of both of those parts of the game comes from effort. From a fan's point of view it looks like they don't have that killer instinct to refuse to be beaten by their guy.

Its going to be a long year if these players don't find a way to light a fire under their asses.

So nothing yet? β€’ Dec 19, 2017 06:49 PM

I saw an article where Self says he is preparing to have both De Sousa and Preston for big 12 play.

What's wrong with Coach Self? β€’ Dec 08, 2017 08:40 PM

jaybate 1.0 said:

If he put the spurs to this team now, one or two might just quit and he would be looking at a 10 win season at best.

@jaybate-1-0 Thanks for the well thought out reply. I especially like this line about the spurs and do think there is some calculation behind Self's apparent restraint last game. I don't think anyone would actually quit but its probably not a risk worth taking. The depth situation is my guess as well for the most likely reason. In seasons past when KU had a deeper bench, the team could afford to have a player go into the "toughening box" for a few games. Its a much different situation now. Its probably a calculated risk to not lay into anyone too hard in order to avoid a confidence spiral that could impact future games as well. There is no doubt that some people react positively to some spit and fire while others don't. Knowing when and with whom to ignite the flames with is a skill and is why Self is paid the big $.

Thanks to all others who posted rational responses as well. I'm not worried about the team quite yet and still have full confidence in Self, but was definitely surprised by the way he kept his cool all game during that debacle. Appreciate all the thoughts from the board rats family, thank you.

What's wrong with Coach Self? β€’ Dec 07, 2017 01:22 PM

Piss poor game last night, team looked terrible in many ways. The biggest question I have after letting it set in for a while is "What is wrong with Coach Self?" Forget what I saw last night, its what I didn't see. I didn't see Coach Self getting heated, face red, trying to light a fire under the team that played flat, no energy, putrid defense, and just went through the motions. They weren't diving for loose balls and lost almost all of the 50/50 balls, rebounding was terrible and got out worked for them all game, and so many stupid turnovers. Where is the Coach Self that I come to know and love? So many times last night somebody would have a bonehead turnover and I'd expect Self to lay into him but nothing. I knew they were going to lose last night in the first few minutes of the second half when nothing had changed. The energy level was the same, still not competing for rebounds, still playing lax defense, I knew at that point that they would lose. I'm used to seeing the team come out with a newfound energy after halftime with everybody suspecting the paint on the walls was being peeled off by Self's "motivational" halftime talks. But not this time. Nothing. No fire on the sideline, no fire at halftime, nothing.

What is wrong with Coach Self??

Sosinki Thread V2 β€’ Dec 05, 2017 12:17 AM

Does this take up a scholarship? I always figured it wouldn't because he already has one for the FB team but when you think about it, that doesn't cover all of the expenses (hotels, flights, etc.) that he will now be getting with the team. I never really knew to what degree a walk-on has to pay their way.

Langford β€’ Nov 28, 2017 01:32 PM

Got a CB pick for Langford to KU yesterday by some Louisville Insider guy. There is likely still a while before he decides but nice to see considering all the smoke lately on the CB for him has been for Vandy.

Nevermind, found it on WatchESPN

Can't find the game. Anyone have a link to watch? Or a channel it would be on Direct TV (non local)

Grimes looks a lot like Trae Young did to me. Who is averaging 18 and 11 (assists) for OU in this early season. Think of all the ball handlers next year we will have. Garrett isn't as much as a scorer as the other 2 but fills the stat sheet. Dotson and Grimes are probably end up being more of a SG rather than a PG but having 2 or 3 that can bring the ball up the floor will be good. I personally think Garrett starts PG next year.

Dotson will be the starting PG next year.

@BShark I guess what I was implying is that I get the sense that the staff feels confident about Romeo otherwise I'd think there would be some other names out there.

Answer is a firm no.

Yet the only names being talked about as additional pieces to the class are Zion and Romeo. Doesn't appear to be a backup plan.

As far as I know, Lightfoot is studying Engineering and has no NBA aspiration so highly unlikely he redshirts.

I actually think this supports the argument for the redshirt. An extra year of free college to finish your Engineering degree, not in a rush to get to the NBA/Overseas. Doing Engineering while a Div. 1 athlete is a very tough thing to do, that extra year might be very welcomed actually.

I really find the scholarship conversation interesting. There are really four underclassmen that have been rumored to consider going to the NBA after this year.

Vick, Newman, Preston, and Dok

As KU stands now, at least one of them must go in order to have enough scholarships. (Note, this whole post assumes there is no surprise transfer). The interesting part for me is that circumstances change throughout the year and nothing is guaranteed. Prior to the season starting, all I saw was people saying it was almost a given that Dok would be gone next year. Now, just two games into the season, all I'm hearing is that its probably more likely now that he stays another year (not on any mock drafts, plays a dying position in the nba, etc.). What if more circumstances change? What if, say Preston can't play this year and NBA teams don't want to take a chance on him until he proves he has his head on straight? What if Newman has an average year, would he really prefer to be paid overseas rather than try to improve his draft stock at KU? Of course there is always the scary Brandon Rush injury thing that could happen too which forces a player into another year of college.

Its all very interesting to me. It seems that even if someone like Romeo Langford wanted to sign with KU right now, Self would probably have to wait until Spring to know for sure that the spot is available.

I think he signed as well, showed him signing something on the table.

WOOHOOOOOO

@wrwlumpy we watched 90% of the game with the annoying little man muted. He is insufferable.

Serious question: Does anyone in the US of A actually like DV? Why is he still on air?

I used to like him, not so much lately though. His excitement for the game is great and his unique personality are positives. However, he was literally cheering for Kentucky most of that game, its poor job performance for someone who is supposed to be neutral while on air.

It is kindof fun when he is cheering for the other team and then that other team ends up losing though.

Man, that was FUGLY β€’ Nov 15, 2017 01:21 PM

Geez, what a terrible game last night by both sides, just sloppy, dirty, it was downright fugly. Still finding a way to win was good to see, I guess somebody had to win it. My biggest observation was that we didn't play to our strength last night and it was by design. KU stinks in the halfcourt game. However, UK stinks even worse in the halfcourt game. It was obvious to me that Self did not want to turn it into a trackmeet and play into Kentucky's strength. It also helped KU deal with the situation of being short on players (Preston) because a fast paced game up and down the court would have led to much more winded players.

Dok stepped up, thought he played well. Need to work on those foul shots (when tired) though.

Garrett regressed a bit, played more like a frosh.

Graham was off, this has been the knock on his game. Hopefully he can find ways to stay more consistent.

Newman didn't have a good game but came through in clutch time with the big three and two big free throws.

Svi played decent overall yet there is still so many times I get frustrated with him out there.

Gotta be kidding, this is unbelievable.

4 OUT Small Ball β€’ Nov 14, 2017 09:40 PM

BShark said:

I'm not sure this team has a go to scorer/assassin. Lots of really good players on the team though.

Frankly, that might actually be a strength. Makes this team much harder to stop. If we had one guy or two that was the go-to person all the time, a team that can lockdown a player or two can be crippling to a team that functions like that.

SILVIO DESOUSA β€’ Nov 14, 2017 06:26 PM

@jayballer54 I think that is the same article posted by @BShark 3 hours ago.

@BShark Yep, same here. The comments from Jerry Meyer aren't sitting well with me.

I'm a little nervous about this one for some reason, can anybody ease my nerves about it and tell me there isn't anything to worry about? haha.

SILVIO DESOUSA β€’ Nov 10, 2017 08:41 PM

@jayballer54 @JayHawkFanToo yep ok, that's what I thought. I think the post could be read a few different ways which is why there was some confusion.

SILVIO DESOUSA β€’ Nov 10, 2017 07:31 PM

JayHawkFanToo said:

Silvio would lose only the current one half season of eligibility and would have 3 and one half years available. Having said that, I don't believe Silvio will stay here that long so it really is a moot point.

Are you sure about that? I think this half season would count as 1 season and he would have 3 left. I have never heard of anyone running out of eligibility midway through their season which would be the case if he used all of his eligibility.

Are we done recruiting? β€’ Nov 09, 2017 03:10 PM

@jayballer54 I still think there is a chance he picks KU. There is the Adidas connection and the Dotson connection in our favor. KU may not be the favorite at this time but there is still a lot of time between now and spring signing period which is when most expect he will decide. For instance, say KU beats Kentucky down next week, perhaps that levels the competition again, who knows. Time is on KU's side to make up ground, assuming they trail right now. He and Langford are probably going to play the wait and see game to see how Vick's season goes and if he is leaning towards leaving or staying.
