George Mason is a downgrade from even Nevada. Kenpom 127 and NET 117 ranking.

Still wish we could've scheduled Creighton tonight.

Well so Covid has invaded the KU Basketball - -hope this doesn't get transmitted to the men - better lock it up tight as a drum

This is going to be interesting. Don't know much about the Wolfpack, but this game doesn't look like an automatic "W"...at least compared to Harvard.

Their KenPom rating is #77, compared to 171 for the Crimson. That's better than every other team KU has played this season except Michigan State.

Nevada still isn't a good team.

Hard to say. I saw a little of their 20-point win over Washington on a neutral court. Not that UW is any good this year, but I figure Nevada will give us a better run than Harvard.

It's not hard to say, Nevada is a bad team. They're better than Harvard, but they're still a bad team with a couple of pretty bad losses and KU should still win by 20+ on Wednesday. Nevada is in the high 290's in scoring defense going against one of the best offenses in the country. KU will have a good shot at hanging 100 on the Wolfpack Wednesday.

@Texas-Hawk-10 so do these count as big 12 games and we play 3 times? Dumb ?

If it's Tech, the Big 12 would just be rearranging the conference schedule or KU just ends up playing 3 games in a week at some point to make up the OSU game. Scheduling is going to be an absolute clusterf--- for conferences that aren't doing an automatic forfeit for Covid issues.

Welcome Sydney Curry! • Dec 27, 2021 04:41 PM

@drgnslayr Jeff Withey was a stick who needed help with coordination more than anything to address his issues. Cam Martin is a very thick individual who has a completely different body type than Withey. Cam is built and plays a similar game to Dedric Lawson, obviously not as good overall and makes Dedric look like very athletic by comparison.

There's multiple reasons for why I don't see him staying after this season. As I've said in a previous post, who would Martin play over next season? Unless Zach Clemence figures out how to guard someone, he's stuck at the 5 spot, KJ Adams is an undersized 5 and both have already passed Cam on the depth chart, Ernest Udeh is a 5 and probably going to be ahead of Cam as well.

You also have the IARP ruling looming and based on NC State's outcome, a loss of scholarship seems pretty likely for KU. If KU only has 12 scholarships to play with, Cam Martin is a likely candidate to be the odd man out if Self has to force someone out to be compliance. Self has 4 committed for 2022, MJ Rice is a question mark to show up, and KU currently has 5 guys on their way out. Coleman-Lands, Lightfoot, and R. Martin are all super seniors and McCormack and Agbaji are both seniors. KU would need another player to leave early or transfer out, Braun or Wilson are options in order to make room for Cam Martin with no other roster changes.

I don't think it's a foregone conclusion that Cam Martin won't be at KU next season, but I don't think he redshirts this season if he was okay with ending his career as a bench warmer. To me, this redshirt is a sign that Martin took a chance, didn't work out the way he wanted, and will be able to finish his career at a low or mid major where he'll be a starter or play big minutes next season.

@AsadZ I didn't see Drake mentioned and they wouldn't be an option at this point because they have a game scheduled for Tuesday night.

The most likely options seem to be either Creighton as you mentioned or Nebraska. If keeping the rescheduled game against a D1 opponent is a priority, Northern Iowa would be an option as well. My guess would be one of those three schools ends up being the opponent on Wednesday night and if not, then it'll likely be a D2 school.

@Texas-Hawk-10 just don’t think he resshirts then transfers. Can’t imagine Self doing that either

Cam is redshirting this year so he can finish his career elsewhere. Who would Cam play over next season? He already lost out to Jalen Wilson, Zach Clemence, and KJ Adams and Self has a couple of bigs coming in 2022 that are higher ranked and regarded than Clemence and Adams were. Cam is also currently sitting at 13th or 14th on the depth chart which is why he's redshirting this season and if KU only has 12 scholarships available next season, very real possibility by the way, Cam is the odd man out in that situation as well.

And if you think Self won't force a transfer if needed, then you're either very naive or just don't pay much attention because Self has run many players off who weren't good enough to play at KU.

My question to that is - - If Cam isn't good enough to play at KU - - then why did he offer or accept Cam in the 1st place. Why did he waste a Scoli on Cam LAT YR if he didn't think he was good enough. Just curious guess there is alot of Naive people out here

How many other times has Self brought in someone hoping they'd be able to contribute, but didn't end up living up to expectations? Charlie Moore being the main example in regards to a transfer. Cam's lack of athleticism was not an unknown issue, but Self was likely hoping that Cam's skill level was high enough to overcome his lack of athleticism since Cam is a big man that can make outside shots. Self was basically hoping Cam could be a poor man's Dedric Lawson. It likely became pretty clear early on that wasn't going to be the case with Cam so he takes the redshirt this year to preserve his eligibility and we'll likely see him at a low major school next season like an Ohio Valley school where he originally played his freshman season.

It's a situation where it didn't work out as hoped, both sides are being mature about it and Self will help Cam find a good landing spot for next season so he can finish his career somewhere other than the bench.

We've also seen this situation plenty where Self signs a freshman, they don't develop as much as expected, and Self helps them find a lower level school where they can thrive at. Cam Martin isn't the first time a situation like this has happened with Self and it won't be the last time either. Kyle Cuffe will be another to watch as well as he works on his recovery and basically not playing basketball for 2 years if he's able to get to a level where he can play meaningful minutes at KU.

@Woodrow said in NBA draft 2022:

@Kcmatt7 Gotta agree. If he keeps playing like this he will creep into the first round. Will suck to lose him, but if he does keep playing like this then KU will be a final 4 team. I also have to think Self will be recruiting the portal for s replacement.

ESPN is only outlet I've seen that has Braun in their 2022 mock. I think it's likely Braun goes through the process and returns next season. Even if he doesn't, Self's not likely hitting the transfer market for a replacement for Braun. MJ Rice, if he comes, and Gradey Dick are the replacements for Braun. A line up without Braun next season could very well be Harris, Pettiford, Rice, Wilson, and Clemence. KU is still going to be really good next season as well with or without Christian Braun.

Welcome Sydney Curry! • Dec 24, 2021 04:45 PM

@Oldmanhawk said in Welcome Sydney Curry!:

@Texas-Hawk-10 I agree with your post except for Cam transferring. I think he knows his limits and will accept being a role player. I may be wrong but I think Cam just wants to be a part of a big time basketball team to close out a great career

I don't think Cam sees the floor at all next season either. KU's going to have Zach Clemence, KJ Adams, possibly Jalen Wilson all returning along with adding Ernest Udeh and Zuby Ejiofor means Martin probaby doesn't see the floor next season. Also throw in a loss of scholarship, which is pretty likely based on the NC State IARP ruling, and Self may find himself in a situation where he has to get rid of a player to stay in compliance. If the roster situation as far as who stays, who returns, and who comes into the program ends up at 13 players, Cam Martin is the most likely option for transfer out because Self won't keep a player who's not good enough to play at KU when there's a scholarship reduction.

Former Jayhawks • Dec 24, 2021 04:27 PM

Gary Bedore wrote an article giving an update on 9 former KU players that currently playing college basketball elsewhere this season.

Gethro Muscadin through 12 games at New Mexico (9 starts) was averaging 9.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks in 20 mpg for the Lobos, but made the "mutual" decision to leave the program after their loss to SMU. I'll be curious to see where he ends up because this sounds like him and Richard Pitino just weren't clicking.

Bryce Thompson is averaging 8.5 points in 23.4 mpg for Oklahoma St. His shooting still hasn't gotten any better as he's shooting 41% from the field and 30% from 3 on the season while starting 7 of the 10 games he's played in.

Tyon Grant-Foster scored 9 points and 3 rebounds in 15 minutes of DePaul's season opening game before being taken to the hospital for an undisclosed medical issue that's kept him sidelined ever since.

Tristan Enaruna has started all 12 games for the currently top 10 Iowa St. Cyclones averaging 6.3 points and 3.8 rebounds in 17 mpg while shooting 55% from the field.

Latrell Jossell got his first start of the season for SFA when the Jacks came into AFH and is averaging 8.8 points per game while shooting 44% from 3.

Silvio DeSousa is currently averaging 12.5 points and 6.3 rebounds per game for the 10-3 UT-Chattanooga Mocs.

Charlie Moore is apparently still around and is in his 6th season of college basketball playing for Miami. Moore is averaging 10.2 points and 3.4 assists per game for Miami while shooting 41% from the field and 33% from 3 so still never fixed his shot.

Elijah Elliot who was a walk on during the 19-20 season ended moving to NAIA Texas Weslyan where he's averaging 8.4 points and 2.4 rebounds in 7 games.

Garrett Luinstra was a walk on for the 18-19 team is taking a medical redshirt for Central Missouri after averaging 5.6 points per game last season for the Mules.

Welcome Sydney Curry! • Dec 24, 2021 03:58 PM

@Kcmatt7 said in Welcome Sydney Curry!:

Averaging 6 mpg for Louisville. About 11 points, 11 rebounds, and 7.5 fouls per 40. Has yet to record a block or steal in 48 minutes played.

I do not think he would have cracked the floor for us this year.

Probably wouldn't have, but he was also a popular pick as redshirt candidate this year anyway so I don't think it would've been much of a shock to anyone. Personally, I think I'd still rather have Curry than Cam Martin because as we saw in the exhibition game, Cam doesn't have P5 athleticism at all and made McCormack look like Andrew Wiggins athletically. Even though Cam is far more skilled than Curry, the lack of athleticism is going to negate a lot of his skill at this level next season and I wouldn't be surprised if he transfers down to a low major school. Curry on the other hand has freakish athleticism for someone his size. Curry would've been a great piece to bring off the bench behind Clemence next season for his rebounding alone.

Jayhawks in the pros • Dec 24, 2021 03:47 PM

@AsadZ said in Jayhawks in the pros:

Wiggins is one Jayhawk with whom I expected a lot more success in NBA. To me he has underperformed in the league.

I am not sure if this is related to lack of effort or what but wish he could have translated once in a decade type of talent and athleticism he possesses.

The problem with Wiggins in Minnesota was that he, along with Towns, were expected to be the alphas of the team. As we saw during his year here at KU, Wiggins doesn't have an alpha dog mentality. He's much better in a supporting role which is what his job is at Golden State where Curry and Draymond are the alphas of that team so Wiggins can just go out and play without worrying about being a leader.

Josh Jackson is the player I'm more surprised about because I thought he was the better overall player at KU than Wiggins was, and he has an alpha dog mentality, but I don't know if it was a work ethic issue with him or not, but his career has been much more lack luster than I think most people here would've predicted.

@wissox should be happy because it sounds like Crawford is headed to the national champs.

That's good of you @Texas-Hawk-10, but it's not about masks, at this point. It is about those who refuse to be vaccined.

I work in a low income district where there's not easy access to vaccines and only approved for those 12 and under fairly recently. This is where McCarthy Hall is a huge advantage for KU because they can pretty much self-isolate there with minimal exposure to those outside the program. We didn't deal with Covid issues last season until the program had to leave McCarthy and set up camp in KC for the Big 12 tournament.

IARP update • Dec 21, 2021 02:19 PM

The NC State ruling was the one I was most interested in because that's the most similar case to KU's. No post season ban for NC State is encouraging for what should be coming in regards to KU's punishment.

I'm still expecting KU to have to vacate the 2017-18 games Silvio played in which obviously includes the Final Four banner that season along with probation and scholarship reductions. I'm also expecting Townsend to get hit with a show-cause tag, maybe not 6 years because it doesn't appear like the case is as strong against him as it was against Orlando Early. I will also be curious if Self gets a 1 year show-cause.

Nervous Christmas... Yin Yang Perspective • Dec 20, 2021 04:50 PM

KU seems to have a lot of less than stellar games leading up to the Christmas break. Colorado is good enough to be KU and we've seen KU come out flat numerous times when they have a road game before Christmas. Expect this game to either be a rock fight or a Colorado blowout.

I don't think anyone has ever really accused Gonzaga of playing a soft non-confernce schedule anytime in recent history. Now they're starting to be able to get some better teams coming to Spokane, but most of their highest profile non-confernce games are typically road or neutral court games. Seattle has typically been the closest they can get a major team to come play them.
