2021 Transfer Talk/List • Mar 15, 2021 05:48 PM

@KirkIsMyHinrich Clemence has the better chance of cracking the rotation immediately. He's a natural stretch 4 with a game very similar to Perry Ellis both the good and the bad about Perry.

KJ Adams is a work in progress and likely a year away from being a rotation guy. Adams is a poor man's Dedric Lawson and could be an undersized post on time.

Clemence is a pure finesse player that will never be a great fit at the 5 unless it's a 5 out line up. Curry and Adams are both better suited to be post in a 4 out set.

2021 Transfer Talk/List • Mar 15, 2021 05:17 PM

@Kcmatt7 Considering Dave and Mitch will be back, high level big men transfers won't be looking at KU. Curry is a good fit in the role he'll have and he'd develop into a starter in 22-23 and he is a very violent player in a good way like Doke.

@Crimsonorblue22 We won't know specific times, channels, or venues for Monday's games until late Saturday night. What's weird and different is games from the same part of the bracket aren't on the same channel. Normally the KU and USC 1st round games would be on the same channel, but not this year. It's also weird to me that those two games aren't even in the same venue either.

Usually need your whole team though for that and now everything thrown out the door with Dave and jalen on covid protocol. Basically everything could be lost that was built

Dave & Tristan should be available this weekend

But we don't know for sure about that and we also don't know what their stamina levels will be if they play.

Is Dave playing this weekend or not?

Don't know yet. He still has to have 7 straight negative tests before he could head out to Indy. One of the big things with Covid during recovery is not having a lot of energy so even if Dave clears protocol, he likely won't have a lot of stamina and would be playing below 100%. I don't think KU would need McCormack to beat EWU, but USC or Wichita/Drake are another matter.

National champs!!! We have a good draw

How does KU have a good draw? This is probably a worst case scenario of a draw for KU.

We should beat EWU, but we won't have Jalen Wilson this weekend and David McCormack won't be 100% and USC has 7 foot Pac 12 POY Evan Mobley. Should KU somehow manage to reach the S16, the likely match up would be NPOY Luka Garza and Iowa. Iowa is one of the best scoring teams and KU is a team that struggles to score.

So no, KU did not get a good draw, they got about as bad of a draw as possible with their current roster situation.

I say it every year. About 35 years running now. We're good. Pac 10 is trash. Well stop Iowa. Well beat uva after they upset the zags. Then whomever and then whomever....were good

You do realize that KU will be without Jalen Wilson the first two games and even if David McCormack is playing (possibility he won't play either), he won't be 100%. KU got out into a bracket with great big men while dealing with their own big men issues. KU got a worst case scenario match up for having issues with their two best offensive post players.

Selection Sunday • Mar 14, 2021 10:23 PM

Illinois has a couple of potentially brutal second round and S16 match ups with Loyola in the second round and Oklahoma St. in the S16.

No way. USC is garbage outside one player

And we likely won't have anyone to match up with Mobley if that's the match up because Wilson won't be back yet and McCormack won't be 100% at that point if he's even cleared for that game.

@bskeet said in Coaching Search/AD Thread:

@Texas-Hawk-10 Don't you think they'll fill the position before the season starts?

Not at this point. KU doesn't have an athletic director currently. KU will likely want the new AD to make the decision on a football coach. By the time a new AD gets hired, spring practice will have already passed with KU implementing Jones's overall vision and DeBorg's offense.

That presents three very big problems with hiring a new head coach after spring practice is over. The first is that the players wanted Jones and naming him interim head coach is preserving this recruiting class which is on the best in KU history and preventing a mass exodus of players and undoing the work of finally fixing KU's scholarship issues. A new head coach leads to a lot of recruits bailing and going elsewhere along with a bunch of other players since they don't have to sit out which would leave the new coach in arguably a worse position than what David Beaty inherited from Charlie Weis.

The second issue is that KU's offensive players would have to learn a second offensive system in 6 months and the defense a new system over the summer after going through spring practice learning DeBorg's system and continuing to develop Eliot's defensive system. A new head coach makes all of spring practice meaningless and puts KU further away from being competitive.

The third issue is what kind of quality would be in the staff with a new coach hired in May/June from outside the program. Quality coaches aren't going to leave their current jobs at that time of year and neither would quality assistant coaches. A staff hired in May/June would be full of red flags and lack of quality.

Naming Emmett Jones the interim is something the players wanted. That means motivation will not an issue for these players because they're playing for someone they love. If KU doesn't show any on field progress in 2021, it'll be much easier to justify the decision to bring in an outside coach like a Lance Leipold because Jones wouldn't have done enough to earn the job and the players will be much more understanding and accepting because their guy was given a chance.

That's why you go through the 2021 season with Emmett Jones as the interim and reevaluate after the season.

NCAA Tournament - Automatic Bids • Mar 14, 2021 01:50 PM

The two most intriguing games today are the AAC and A10 games. The AAC has a potential bid stealers in Cincinnati playing. Houston won the first meeting by 38 points and are favored by 13.5 points today so can Cincy put on a better show and be the third bid stealer this weekend?

The A10 is intriguing because each team is currently a projected 10 seed so could the loser drop down into Last Four In territory and a play in game?

NCAA Tournament - Automatic Bids • Mar 14, 2021 01:38 PM

There 5 games today.

Patriot League is up first on CBSSN at 11CST with Loyola-MD vs. Colgate.

The A10 on CBS and SEC on ESPN are up next at noon with VCU vs. St. Bonaventure in the A10 title game and LSU vs. Alabama in the SEC title game.

The AAC title game between Cincinnati and Houston is at 2:15 on ESPN with Cincinnati having a chance to steal a third bid to go with Georgetown and Oregon St. yesterday.

The final game is the Big 10 title game at 2:30 on CBS between Ohio St. and Illinois.

I'm not particularly interested in Kane at this point. It would be too similar to Beaty's background at this point as far as P5 experience as a coordinator goes. I know he's a Jayhawk and probably who a lot of people at KU will want because of that, but I think he'll be a better candidate during the next coaching search.

Lance Leipold should probably be the top choice if Jones doesn't do enough this season to earn the job. The criticism from casual fans on Leipold is going to be what happened last time we hired Buffalo's head coach even though Gill was never given a fair chance by the fan base or Zenger.

That's not much of an argument against Leipold is it ? - -I'm all in for him. Your not going to hire a guy just because he Coach's Buffalo lol. - That doesn't factor if he knows he X's & O's does it

Not any different than when I suggested Mark Farley to replace Turner Gill I believe (I don't remember if it was here or KUSports) and people jumped all over me because he was from the same school as Terry Allen prior to when he came to KU. So people are dumb enough to do that and make the Gill comparison with Leipold regardless of how unfounded it would be just like a Farley/Allen comparison was about 10 years ago.

The Duke NCAA Tournament drama isn't over yet. If they somehow managed to end up as a first four out team, they could end up as a replacement team if teams from multiple bid leagues have to drop out.

Rece Davis was told that Duke will be able to play in the NCAA Tournament if they end up as an at-large (not happening) or a replacement team (possibility). So there is a potential scenario where Duke could end up replacing Kansas in the NCAA Tournament.

ya and I got a chance to be the Pope tomorrow too. - I heard Reece talking about that - - - NOT HAPPENING

I agree it's unlikely, but I'm not going to rule anything out at this point until either tomorrow if Duke isn't a First Four Out team or Tuesday when the deadline for replacement teams to be swapped in happens if Duke is in the First Four group.

I'm not ruling anything out at this point when it comes to Duke and them being the NCAA's golden child.

There's been surprisingly few bid stealers so far this conference tournament season.

Utah St. plays San Diego St. for the Mountain West title with USU right there on the cut line.

Memphis plays Houston with Memphis needing a win to out themselves into the field.

If either of those teams lose, they'll likely be hoping that Kansas and Virginia pop more positive tests and can't play in the NCAA Tournament.

In the Big East, Georgetown has a chance to steal a bid if they knock off Creighton tonight. Also, Oregon St. has a chance to steal a bid as well if they beat Colorado in the PAC12 Title game tonight.
