About time you stopped with the foolery and got back to Lawrence LaGerald!
@Crimsonorblue22 I think he's a gifted passer but don't think he can manage a game, not now, maybe never in an elite capacity. If he can learn to play off the ball then I think he could have a high ceiling playing second fiddle to someone like LeBron. But if he is drafted by a crappy team where he is expected to run the show from day one I think yes he's going to get destroyed.
I'm not a Trae Young fan. But I am interested in the indicators that scouts might look at when assessing Trae's ceiling.
When we bag on Oklahoma falling apart with Young, I went back and looked at Davidson's losses in Curry's last season (2008-09)...
Oklahoma, Purdue, Duke, College of Charleston, Citadel (by 16!), Butler, College of Charleston again, and Saint Mary's.
Sure, you could argue Oklahoma last year had a better roster than Davidson did with Curry, but there are some pretty bad losses in there.
Tuned in at the start of OT last night after LeBron had basically given up but caught up on the highlights. Draymond Green may be the most annoying player in the league, and between KD joining them and the evolution of Draymond Greens taunting, I really don't care for Golden State [Klay Thompson is a quality dude]. I appreciated that LeBron didn't say anything with lasting bite to it about Smith's bonehead play. That was a tough one to swallow I'm sure.
While the Stanley Cup is a lot more appealing atm I think I'm rooting for LeBron here. Alright Hercules. Let's see what you got.
@drgnslayr I don't think Shaka is a bad coach. Nevada was a good team weren't they? And Rick Barnes lost to an #11 Loyola team, as much as I like Barnes... I feel like the crap Shaka catches, at least from me, is because Texas did Barnes wrong.
@justanotherfan really nice post. You're probably right that I would not root for Jordan in today's media spotlight, and might well find LeBron to be the more likeable of the two.
Would you say that the roster construction at Cleveland and Miami was elite? Would you consider that reflective of LeBron?
Yeah I don't like Curry as well.
Not being able to appreciate greatness in your disliked players is beyond rooting.
I said LeBron was great; we are in agreement there.
I think this should apply to denying the greatness of his teammates as well. That's the bone I pick with the world. And if people tear them down to prop LeBron up, well that's a nasty business and I call BS. And if it's part of the fiction people try to establish in order to slap on the "greatest" moniker which I believe it is, then I'll go after that.
@mayjay Is it so strange a notion that people want to root for likeable players? Why must one suspend reality in order to appreciate players? Are you sure that you aren't the one with the irrational perspective here?
Tell me that running David Blatt out of town so you can hire Tyron Lue is what you do if you want to develop a team.
Can you imagine LeBron and Phil Jackson trying to get along?
@justanotherfan I've never liked LeBron, nor the media adulation he's received. I've always found his interviews to be arrogant and hopelessly self centered. His posturing on the court annoys the crap out of me. His complaining to the refs annoys the crap out of me.
Champions win. If you explain his inability to do what Jordan did because he had inferior teammates, you're making assumptions about LeBrons ability to play with better teammates, and that Jordan wouldn't be able to win those seasons he won with different teammates. Remember that Grant and Pippen were drafted and developed into studs with Jordan. Meanwhile LeBron pulled the strings on getting Wiggins traded out of town instead of developing him, and Kyrie Irving didn't want to stick around with LeBron. What does that say?
My belief, which you may choose to reject, is that MJ was a much better teammate. The team is a reflection of a leader's greatness.
Dear Sir,
Let's return to the source of this confusion between us, which stemmed from @BShark saying that LeBron made it to the finals with his "sorry ass teammates". If, by chance, he was being saracastic and he in fact feels that LeBron's team is a good one, then ok for him, he and I are in agreement. If however, he actually believes that LeBron's team sucks, then I feel the need to refute the comment, as clearly, LeBron has a STRONG seat at the table in defining the roster around him, and has had that power for a long time.
That was my point. I don't like feeding into the media frenzy that wants to build a throne out of LeBron's inferior teammates bones. To use @BShark's term, it's fan fiction, and the fans happen to include the media who are happy to debate endlessly about whether LeBron is the greatest. Which is a joke.
Michael Jordan left basketball in his PRIME after 3 consecutive titles, came back and had 3 MORE consecutive titles. LeBron is great, but he will never EVER be Michael Jordan. And the only way anyone can try to get him in the discussion is to talk shit about his teammates, which in my mind, is a really weak argument, considering LeBron has had a heavy hand in building those teams. Teams built around him.
So I call BS.
@mayjay No, I just don't like LeBron as a person, and I don't feel like getting all mushy and celebrating his victories. It's still a free country, right?
I responded to a specific comment by @BShark with a specific response. Did I make a sweeping generalization about LeBron like "He sucks" or "He's overrated"? No.
Are you saying that I am required to bow down to LeBron first to qualify my comment?
Marcus Smart did some really fantastic things on D last night. Unfortunately, he was 1-10 from the field, and his flop was ridiculous. I have to admit that in that split second, being able to identify that LeBron was swinging his arm through on a drive, identify that it is an opportune time to flop, and understand how his body should react is pretty amazing. It's a skill that I detest, but a skill nonetheless.
@BShark a bunch of sorry ass players that he hand picked.
@wissox I still can't believe Rizzo made that trade. All we needed was middle relief and after refusing to trade either of those guys for Andrew Miller at the trade deadline we trade BOTH for a center fielder. oh well.
:100: laurel here too.
Also, anyone download a frequency generator like this one https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.boedec.hoel.frequencygenerator β crank up the hz to 14120 (is a frequency where old ears can't hear sh--) then turn the volume to Max and play it around people under the age of 25?
@JayHawkFanToo has Bill Self mentioned how he think De Sousa will do next year? To me that's the most telling sign. At least in the selected quotes in this story, no mention of DeSousa where you would assume he would be mentioned
@Crimsonorblue22 hey, I appreciate the qualification of it being his opinion. To me that seems more honest than stating his opinion as fact.
@wissox yeah man, Juan Soto! he's our 2nd best prospect, but we have 4 injured outfielders (I'm sure you're aware that includes Eaton). I don't think anyone was planning to move him up this fast. It definitely is exciting! After his home he popped his helmet off and "hair flipped" like Harper used to with a big grin on his face (he doesn't have long hair).
Now if only we had 3 19 year old middle relievers comparably talented stashed away somewhere in the minors... I saw Reynaldo Lopez started off red hot for you and then cooled off this year. Still think he ends up being one of the ones we regret trading.
Good article about Roy Hibbert and other NBA big men that hang around under the basket, and how the league has shifted away from them:
https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/why-the-nba-abandoned-roy-hibbert/ β
@wissox can you relay any specific piece s of information this person stated that affected you? It's hard to be convinced of anything when someone says ""I looked the man in the eye. I found him to be very straightforward and trustworthy. We had a very good dialogue. "
Remember a few years ago when Bill Self was pretty vocally criticizing ESPNs disparity of coverage? Remember how outspoken he has been about the need for change in the one and done rule? Remember that he has taken and developed players who were lesser known recruits giving them major roles on the team, like Landen and Jamari. Even though it was by necessity, he genuinely appreciates these guys. Remember that he developed Frank into POY and Devonte into runner up POY. He developed all his players with a good head on their shoulders. He helped D Block and TomRob through hard times. He has done great work with his Assists foundation. In post games he is always gracious in victory and in defeat.
I'm still all in on Bill Self. Maybe your faith is faltering because he has been so solid for so long. This is a tough time for basketball and it's natural to question. I hope you come around strong in Self's camp and he remains worthy of your support.
@HighEliteMajor ahhh that makes sense. When I was a kid when my mom would lecture me I'd stare at her head hard enough until it started looking disproportionately sized for her body... Much better than talking back. Wasn't sure if watching Doke shoot free throws had caused some sort of psychological reversion to childhood for me...
@HighEliteMajor that picture has always looked doctored to me. Not saying it is, but doesnt it make his head look disproportionately large and isn't it weird that his face is clear (background) but his arms (foreground) are blurry? Really weird pic.
Have an area in my backyard here in Virginia that looks like a swimming pool. Would that I could have sent a days worth of this rain your way.
Maybe Philly will draft Svi as Redick's replacement, the way Svi is shooting it these days.
Phoenix is going to be relevant again. If you're Sacramento are you drafting Bagley second?
I wonder if top level recruits read these quotes from NBA scouts... This article quotes a scout saying that Miller misused Ayton and he would have been much better in a 4 guard lineup.
@HighEliteMajor seems logical from outside looking in, but that's assuming we know all of the factors at play.
Also, Diallo would have been gone, but I don't think that's your point. You're talking about "the Diallos" and "the Landens". Devil may be in the details though.
@justanotherfan good post. led the Big 12 in FG% as a starter. While the Jordan Bells of the world took advantage of Landen, he still put us in position to get that shot against Oregon. Nothing but love for the big guy.
@jayballer73 for a second I read that as "any mother[f...ers]". I thought you were suggesting we are hardcore and nobody else out there can run with us. Happy mother's day @jayballer73 you big softy! :)
@jayballer73 Nats and Yankees, two hottest teams in MLB. GO NATS!
@Buster-1926 what was he like on the air?
To give you another example of how far machine learning has come they are releasing an API for cell phone cameras that can correctly identify almost any type of thing it looks at and the API is small enough to reside on the device itself, as the models have already been compressed in the cloud so much.
@jaybate-1.0 well said. I think this is all the more reason to watch th activities of Google that were stated at I/O regarding their TensorFlow chips. I think you are right to suggest that machines that act like humans is not the biggest concern, but machine learning is behind that AI as well as the digital runaway you describe. Here is a rundown of what Sundar Pichai said about improvements in Tensorflow capacity:
www.theregister.co.uk/2018/05/09/google_tpu_3/
A pod of TPU 3.0s can crunch numbers at 100 petaFLOPS or more, it is claimed. A pod of TPU 2.0s clocked in at about 11.5 petaFLOPS tops. Eight times 11.5 is 92, which is about 100. It's all rather nebulous, though, because Google shies away from stating the precision of the math in these benchmarks, and the precision will make a difference.
βThe days of single systems are irrelevant, are over,β Stone added. βThese cloud TPUs give you a dial you can turn. Set up model up on a small system, get it running and then dial it up to take training time from hours to minutes.β
Just realized that they edited down the video so my time marks no longer make sense. On the road so I will make this brief.
I think my point @jaybate-1-0 is that AI will at some point be capable of making decisions and so it is not as simple as saying that humans have the choice of using technology for good or bad means. What we train our tech is an imperative that we may not always have full control over. And what the market demands now is shaping the beginnings of that imperative, and that too is not entirely in anyone's singular command.
@jaybate-1-0 I don't entirely agree with you. While you're right to point out that there are other factors to be considered that are shaping our future, it isn't entirely true that technological advancements as driven by the private market is easily bridled or that anyone with ethics in mind is steering our direction.
For anyone who wants to understand where our technology is going, Google i/o started today. Here is a link to the keynote. I encourage all people, not just those in the tech industry, to give it a watch to better understand how technology is evolving:
In particular, it is important to understand the accelerated strides we are making toward passing the Turing Test (and possibly the Singularity).
EDIT: Check out Sundar Pichais demo of Google assistant making an appt for a client. Also his discussion about machine learning.
I posted this before.. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illinois_Mr._Basketball β
You don't get to be Illinois Mr Basketball by sucking.
@Statmachine Michelson was also reported to have made big vertical gains
I would rather see Philly grow without him but Embiid and Simmons both want him.
JJ Redick has played in 12 post seasons? I hate Duke (goes without saying) and I mocked Redick mercilessly when I could (like about the man purse he sported around when he first joined the league) but the dude has had a helluva NBA career and I've grown to really appreciate him. One of the few good Dukies, maybe..
@KUSTEVE Boogie made 2.2 threes pg this year. Davis .7 ... I agree they seem to playing better ball but I haven't watched them closely to have a good sense of it.
@jaybate-1.0 I've watched a good portion of the Philly games. Watching live on the rest hasn't retained my interest as much as the box scores and storylines.
@BShark lololol so good
