@wissox we’ve been just as physical in the paint on d. Contesting everything and nothing getting called.

Refs definitely letting them play. Seems to be an advantage for us so far.

I must be way behind or way ahead or something.

This line is telling, "With the way the games are being called, toughness is winning in March. By the time Few and Lloyd figured it out, it was too late." Um... You think those coaches didn't care about toughness until last night? Does make me feel fortunate Kansas is in the big 12 and had teams like Texas, Iowa State, and Tech grabbing, slapping, hacking and clogging, in order to toughen up this team and prepare them for March. The big 12 I feel represented itself well this tournament with no team getting blown out, having a few upsets and really pushing some of the top seeds and favorites to the limit (TCU, Texas, Tech).

The thing is I don't disagree with the big picture argument being made in that article about officiating and freedom of movement, etc, but the way it singles out Zona and the Zags as the victims to Arkansas, Houston, and the refs is -four letter word incoming- SOFT. And you KNOW Duke would have been included had Tech pulled off that win. Whew! The entitlement is infuriating.

If you are at the top, you don't get to be a victim. You can be the bully and in competitive sports should strive to do so, but you are never the victim. We all watch games with our crimson and blue glasses and see every foul that doesn't get called our way but in the end most Kansas fans I know seem to recognize WE are the bullies of the big 12. WE get everyone's best shot because we are the team to beat and wouldn't want it any other way. Kansas hasn't won a title since 2008 because COVID ruined our best teams chance in 2020 and every other year we've run into a team who for that game played tougher and executed better than we did that night. Kansas has been the more talented team on several occasions but fortunately for EVERYONE that's not how the winner is determined. How boring a sport to watch would that be?

Also, could anyone have predicted the 7'2 string bean freshman from Gonzaga would struggle with players who were older, stronger, faster, and clearly wanted it more?

@drgnslayr Really the goal should be GOOD BAD BALL. Where we play good, they paly bad, and we win every game easily.

But if we do this, how would we ever develop a chip...???? Hmmm... back to the drawing board.

Winning Strategy to Bring Home a Trophy... • Mar 25, 2022 07:33 PM

I feel like this team is a very smart KU team. I've rarely seen anyone complain about effort or taking bad shots or anything like that with anyone in this group. There are games where a certain guy may not be hitting his shot or may have trouble staying in front of his man. For a time Remy seemed lost on D but that hasn't recently been the case.

They know what they are supposed to do. They know how to do it. They've all proven they can do it. It's all about execution and consistency now.

Winning Strategy to Bring Home a Trophy... • Mar 25, 2022 07:29 PM

@drgnslayr From Matt Tait's pregame write up on KUsports.com

"Said KU’s Christian Braun of his team’s love of running the floor: “That’s when we’re at our best. We know when we get out and we get stops, we can run.”

@jayballer67 Really hoping that got that hot shooting night out of the way in their last game!

GAMEDAY Bucketeers • Mar 25, 2022 02:16 PM

@Kcmatt7 I want 30.

TONIGHT'S PICKS • Mar 25, 2022 02:15 PM

@mayjay I thought this same thing last night. How great would it be to send K out with an L in the championship?

Sweet 16 Chat • Mar 25, 2022 01:34 PM

@mayjay If there isn't some conspiracy among refs than how do you explain KU not winning the championship every year? You CAN'T CAN YOU!!!!!

Real talk, refs in college ref too many games during the season and that leads to bad nights and games for everyone. But specifically, this season and tournament have been particularly bad when it comes to officiating. Every game has turned into a hockey game and to me it's a direct result of inconsistent officiating. The exact same level of contact is a foul sometimes but not others. There seems to be a "let them play" mentality until it gets out of control, then call it tight for a while to reign it back in. This is not how officiating should work. A certain level of contact should be a foul regardless of time, score, foul count, player, coach, team, etc. But that doesn't seem to be the case.

I don't honestly think there is some conspiracy to get K the title or keep KU out but if you think there isn't bias among refs, you have an unrealistic perception of the way humans operate. Refs naturally want to "keep it even" when it comes to calling fouls. We've been trained to believe equal equals fair. So if one team is in the double bonus and the other has 2 fouls, it's natural to feel an urge to call more fouls on the team with less. It is also natural for fans to believe allowing it to get to that 7-2 disparity means things weren't called fairly up to that point.

The truth is there doesn't need to be any backroom deals or pay offs to refs because human incompetence and implicit bias are more than enough to get the job done. And successful coaches like K, Izzo, and Self work these inconsistencies to their maximum advantage.

@BShark I'm not great at following recruiting stuff. I know Wiggins and Jackson came is as super stud athletes but couldn't really shoot it at a high level. I have no idea if this kid is one of those or an actual shooter?

NOT Remy?! • Mar 24, 2022 07:04 PM

@BShark said in NOT Remy?!:

Stole this data but hasn't been posted here. Since start of Big 12 tournament.

Remy On/ Juan Off: 0.94ppp offense, 0.91 defense.

Juan On/ Remy Off: 1.22 offense, 0.87 defense.

Both on: 1.23 offense, 0.79 defense.

@Kcmatt7 @BeddieKU23

But I thought Juan is an offensive liability and since he can't score he should just sit? (Where'd that guy go??)

I think we are in pretty good shape to play this way MORE next year with Juan, Yes, and Bobby. Scoot Christian into Och's spot at the 3 and if Wilson and Dave both stay we are good to go with OPTIONS everywhere with the new recruits. I know Grady is going to play and probably another Big as well (someone has to replace MITCH!).

2021-22 PER's & Stats • Mar 23, 2022 06:44 PM

https://www.ncaa.com/stats/basketball-men/d1/current/team/518 ↗

Looks like teams to study would be Iowa State, Gonzaga (third on Jesse's list of teams this happens to the most) and Baylor. Their 3pa totals for the year are somewhere in the mid to high 600s while ours is mid 700s. Houston is an odd team that allows a TON (over 800) but at a low percentage (under 30). Kansas is fairly close to Houston percentage wise only being a percentage point or 2 worse but that makes a big difference over the course of a season in total makes.

2021-22 PER's & Stats • Mar 23, 2022 06:31 PM

@DCHawker I would wonder statistically if that really is too long of timeframe or too many instances because the NCAA tournament is just such a small sample size. It is at MOST 6 games in a 35 game schedule and usually more like 2-4 games for teams like Kansas (and the others atop that list) and 0-2 for most other teams.

2021-22 PER's & Stats • Mar 23, 2022 06:27 PM

There has been some rumblings in the analytics side of college basketball that 3 point shooting % is largely unpredictable and random and that teams can really only impact how many ATTEMPTS are allowed against them. So this stat to me shows a little bit of bad luck and some of our defensive scheming troubles.

KU used to hang its hat on forcing teams to shoot less than 40% for a game. This meant taking away layups and forcing teams to shoot from further away from the basket. This worked as a defensive strategy and won KU a Title in 2008 largely on the back of that stiff interior defense. KU fans LOVE a rim protector! We know when we have one and can tell when it's missing. But the game changed a lot after 2008 because of one person. Steph Curry. Players have gotten A LOT better at scoring from far away and every high school gym is full of guys unafraid to chuck it from DEEP. It's made it to the women's game with Clark from Iowa. Many people care more about the three point contest than the dunk contest. This is one area where I feel Self has been slow to adjust. He's adjusted it somewhat on the offensive side of the ball and can be heard in press conferences talking about wanting his teams to shoot more from 3. But I haven't seen or heard that same focus on the defensive end. Switching 4 has started to address it but still hasn't made too much of an impact as it allows teams to get whatever matchup they want inside or outside. I don't know the solution for this but it would be interesting to see what teams are REALLY good at limiting teams 3PAs and how exactly they accomplish that.

NOT Remy?! • Mar 23, 2022 06:15 PM

@HawkChamp Check out the stats jesse Newell found that I posted on the PER Stats thread!

2021-22 PER's & Stats • Mar 23, 2022 05:56 PM

Felt like maybe this belonged here. ?s=21

So yes, teams do seem to get hot from 3 against Kansas more than other teams.

It’s also interesting to me that the programs at the top of this list are traditionally very successful programs. Obviously playing more tournament games provides more opportunity for this type of thing to happen but wonder if there’s something to less successful teams applying the chuck threes and pray strategy.

NOT Remy?! • Mar 23, 2022 05:37 PM

@HawkChamp This is actually my FAVORITE thing about where we are right now. We've honestly gone a winning streak here to end the season despite being in somewhat of a shooting slump! Here's hoping we come out of that slump sometime in the next 4 games! I know Self is a strong believer in the law of averages and is absolutely loving that this team has been able to win while not shooting well. And even against a team that shot better than their average in what is always a possible trap game.

NOT Remy?! • Mar 22, 2022 03:58 AM

@drgnslayr right there with you and honestly happy to be wrong. Seems like his coach and his teammates love seeing type a Remy assert himself on the court. Would agree that I hope Och doesn’t permanently revert to playing second fiddle. Braun will show up at some point. Right? I think that might be my favorite part of us getting to the sweet sixteen the way we did. Self was not joking or posturing at all when he said this team still has another gear. Our best players haven’t even played well yet.

Looking forward to see what Dave can do against a traditional big next game.

And maybe Remy keeps it going. MOP is a rafters spot. Right? I mean. If the dude wins Kansas a title what else do you do?

Monday Morning Madness Thoughts • Mar 21, 2022 03:48 PM

@jayballer67 I all for showing emotion, having confidence, and celebrating your own accomplishments. But much of TCU Big's celebrations were more about degrading the opponent with his "too small" gestures. He can flex and puff his chest all he wants in my opinion but when you start venturing into commenting more on your opponent than yourself that's where I start losing respect for you. I mean, he is much bigger and better at basketball than me so what I think probably doesn't matter to him one bit. And it shouldn't. It's just how I determine the players I like watching for myself.

2022 Transfer Portal Thread • Mar 21, 2022 03:29 PM

What Time Does KU Play Iowa? • Mar 21, 2022 02:31 PM

I really thought both Baylor and TCU would win while watching the end of those games.

Non-KU Games • Mar 21, 2022 02:22 PM

@BeddieKU23 The clock even stopped anticipating the call. Watch the replay and it stops at like 2.2 for almost half a second. The dunk shouldn't have even been close.

What If • Mar 21, 2022 02:00 PM

@BShark I think I might like that.

Monday Morning Madness Thoughts • Mar 21, 2022 01:58 PM

I'm glad we get the first game in Chicago so that we don't have to wait on any more potential overtime games! It will be nice to play a game on schedule and for the players to be able to count on a pregame routine. But really it will help MY anxiety as I await the tip off! Would have liked to play Thursday just so we don't have to wait as long. I'm cautiously optimistic because I've felt all year like this teams floor is very high even if their ceiling isn't. The big 12 has shown even in it's losses that every game in conference was indeed an absolute battle. That loss to TCU doesn't look so bad watching how they handled Arizona.

Little worried what might happen if every team from here on out takes Creighton's "don't guard the point guard" strategy but hoping Remy put that to bed at least when he is in the game. Harris will NEED a counter, whether it's making a couple 3s or exploiting the space they give him with a drive and kick or floater or something.

Glad to see my thoughts on officiating are NOT only related to my crimson and blue glasses as I saw so much TERRIBLE officiating in four days. I'd say the Baylor/NC game was probably the worst but I'd be hard pressed to tell you the best... Maybe KU games honestly???? Here's hoping KU gets a little Big 12 Karma for some of the crap calls/no-calls in the TCU, Iowa State, and Texas games.

I find it very difficult to like the TCU big man but he did play great against Arizona. With that said, Arizona's post game celebrations made me hope they lose as soon as possible.

Non-KU Games • Mar 21, 2022 01:03 PM

@Crimsonorblue22 If this were a KU player I'd want him suspended for at least a game if not the rest of the season. I'm fairly confident had the cheerleader reacted in any way we'd be looking at a HUGE story. May turn into that anyway. Shame on that player and shame on Arizona if they let it slide.

Non-KU Games • Mar 20, 2022 11:17 PM

Then a non call on a check into the boards by Iowa state. Maybe the refs just suck… ineptitude as bad as favoritism.

Non-KU Games • Mar 20, 2022 11:16 PM

Iowa state got one favorable call the. Immediately called for a moving screen as a player runs into a dudes back.

Non-KU Games • Mar 20, 2022 11:07 PM

I hate the whole fingertip slow motion check but if you are going to do it you have to give the ball to the team who didn’t touch it last.
