What's happening to some of these teams • Jan 25, 2022 01:30 AM

@jayballer67 said in What's happening to some of these teams:

Just curious as to what's going on. Some of the traditional good teams in College Basketball are just - -ehhhh. - -3 teams in particular here tonight . - - Virginia , Louisville & North Carolina off the top of my head. These teams traditionally - - - - -good even pretty good Yet here we are Louisville 11-8- -- Virginia 11-8 both 5-4 in their conference - - - North Carolina not in top 25 - -just not Normal. These clubs usually in the conversation for the tourney and North Carolina & Virginia has made plenty of noise in the tourney. Last year Carolina was not good This year Not that good - just not use to seeing this kind of stuff. I mean NC in the past has been in the top 25 and a lot towards the top 10 - -no so much lately. Virginia - usually pretty decent not that long ago serious threats in the NCAA'S - -these are just three teams that normally do good but recently just ehh. - - there are others. Any idea what's going on ? why this is happening ? - -I mean even in our down years where we are not as good were STILL in the top 25- -can't remember the last time we was down any lower the like possibly 17th maybe if that low

Really tough to replace a legend like Roy. Makes what self has done at Kansas even more impressive. And hopefully gives a little pause to those who think replacing self will be a given assuming we are KU and good coaches just want to come here.

@Kcmatt7 This could be the instigator of @drgnslayr ’s elusive chip. If this team adopts a rallying cry with this much meaning to them and coach it could be the start of something.

BAD BALL is back! • Jan 24, 2022 10:30 PM

@Jethro said in BAD BALL is back!:

@drgnslayr I didn't see a mixed bag exactly. I saw a team get buried by a team that couldn't miss, and then the most amazing thing happened. It's like the entire team woke up, and began to fly all over the court. This was like a new team- they hit a gear we have never seen with this group. They played tough, they played with grit. The rebounding was amazing. Och took over the game, but all of them played at a level we haven't seen this year. This brutal conference schedule is shaping them, molding them into something special. Now, can we bottle that up, and use that toughness from here on out? Tonight will be a great indicator, because we play one of the toughest teams in the B12 tonight.

Still waiting for Och to have one of these dominating games AND shoot well on the same night. He’s going for 35+at least once this year. It is only a matter of time. He dominated that game while shooting poorly from 3 AND the free throw line. Hell of a performance.

I hope we don't let down after that huge amp-up at KSU. I wondered if it also might have had something to do with Bill losing his dad. If we scrap like we did on Saturday tonight... TT is doomed!

It's hard to beat us twice in this league. I would think we come amped and ready to kiss some Red Raider butt tonight!

I'm hoping you mean KICK!

2021-22 PER's & Stats • Jan 24, 2022 07:28 PM

@Kcmatt7 Seems like maybe the team has struggled so much with the fundamentals Self values that perhaps there hasn't been as much focus on game planning for individuals/teams. I think having an active Dave in the paint can really help this team defensively. At least there'd be a big body jumping and flailing at lay up attempts.

I really do think they'll get it worked out by the end of the season. Not to the point where they are an elite defensive team, but a solid one none the less.

Tonight's Game vs Tech • Jan 24, 2022 06:53 PM

@BeddieKU23 And no doubt Self devoted more prep to Tech than KSU in week prior. May explain some of the defensive struggles early.

Yeah 1.45 ppp for the first half is going to have an impact on overall defensive stats! Yikes. But I do think our defense is improving after that game believe it or not. That second half showed the team (and self) can get stops consistently when dialed in and with a sound game plan.

I’m wondering if less switching might do this team good on d. Just to turn up the individual pressure won players to stay engaged.

Anyone heard any explanation on the blown free throw call at the end of the game? Seems like such a call should have some kind of response from officials at some point. Imagine KU ends up losing by 1… I would just love to hear an explanation or an admission of just a flat blown call.

I have a confession to make.
I pretty much gave up on this game. I had to watch the replay late at night, was tired and cranky and started fast forwarding when we were down a ton of points. I ended up at the moment late in the game when they were wondering why Och wasn’t shooting 3 FTs. Somehow it worked out. No clue how they came back, but happy they did.

A quick look at the box score tells me Och and Wilson were the offensive studs. Dave too.

Starting to worry about Braun’s lack of scoring ability in league play. I’d have to go back and look at his game numbers, but seems like he’s come back to earth? I did see he made some nice plays though.

Always good to win on the road. Hard not to be critical, but always nice to beat the purple pussycats.

Braun was who kept the game “close” most of the game. He was the answer to every kstate run. Whether it was a three when the crowd was roaring or a drive and free throws to end a drought. He didn’t score a lot but every time he did was important.

KU has 8 assists on 12 made FG's so they're sharing the ball and Davehas been aggressive when in. Beyond that, I got nothing positive about today so far.

The guards have all taken turns being aggressive and then just nonchalantly passing the ball to the other team.

@Crimsonorblue22

I saw his night off come up before the wrist wreck. When Big Mac was on the floor with a loose ball and Och just stood there, not trying to go near him so he could feed the ball off the floor.

Then there was the other loose ball when 3 Jayhawks surrounded the OU player who was on the floor and no one went after him down on the ball. He was able to call timeout. You can bet Self is going to use that tape and chew some ass. He should.

We only shot 6 FTs in this game, 2 came as an intentional foul on CB in the closing seconds. That says everything. We didn't want to play with any level of physicality in this game.

Our guys should be ashamed of this game. Period.

The word is out. If you want to slow down the high powered KU run and gun offense just bully them. They are very susceptible to being pushed around. That to me is the next corner this team has to turn. I’d hoped they’d done it vs wvu but that was at home. I think they have it in them. But it starts with Och. He’s the leader. Senior. Possible all American. He’s the one. In the end he closed it out making a bunch of big plays down the stretch. I don’t think he will have another stretch like the start of this game.

@BeddieKU23 solid post! I think it’s also important to not Harris has done a great job taking care of the ball while distributing and playmaking. I think I saw his assist to turnover ratio is tops in the big 12. Or at least was?

Self also noted that Bobby is just being out in a horrible spot. I thought that was an interesting sentiment from him. He clearly loves the dude and he must not be fully recovered for self to say something like that.

With Mitch I think it’s odd that he’s often regarded as a decent post defender by commentators and common observers because he’s rarely out of position but when he’s in according to some numbers, I think Newell reported, our team defense is NOT good at all. Love the kid (excuse me man) but I am finally on the play Dave 25 minutes and split the rest between Adam’s, 5 guards, and use Mitch sparingly less than 10 a game unless foul trouble.

Also love what another poster said about having 6 starters. It IS a problem, but a good problem to have.

Really hoping yesefu builds on and is given the opportunity to build on that wvu game. He’s a game changer with his speed and showed some nice work both defensively and pushing the pace of the game with his foot speed and his vision looking ahead after turnovers and long rebounds.

This team needs to play fast. If they can escape the grind in any game they are likely to blow it open.

Still interested to see if self has any more wrinkles up his sleeve for some of the big games. We’ve seen mostly standard offensive sets and only a handful of pizazz from the coaching box I feel like. Is the team not ready to execute, are practices more focused on the defense, or is some stuff being saved for when he thinks he will need it?

@tis4tim Totally not wrong. When he actually decides to pass he is pretty good at it. It's when he thinks he has to carry the scoring load via 1 on 1/2 plays that we have problems.

I got scared today when he took the inbounds pass and backed down his guy for 5 seconds and then got blocked. Also had a mid range jumper fairly close to that attempt. Was fearful he’d turn into a black hole because he’s done it before. But yes he makes good passes when he decides to.

@benshawks08 he won't accept a 6th man role.

I think it’s reasonable to assume that but I sure can’t say I know one way or the other. It’s why I was curious in the game thread about his demeanor during the game.

Post WV game thoughts • Jan 15, 2022 11:12 PM

@Marco the game looks a lot easier with 4 true threats to score plus a quality playmaker on the floor at the same time.

Dave made sure wvu had to guard him all game. Och made sure he couldn’t be left alone, and while Braun didn’t score much he did get enough easy looks plus his rep made sure he could be ignored either. When it’s pick your poison and Wilson makes almost all of his shots it just eventually demoralized wvu early in the second half and they played the rest of the game with little heart on the defensive end.

There are a few reasons one could argue KU is better without Remy.

  1. He’s been replaced in the lineup with Wilson who is a better rebounder and that rebounding can lead to fast break points. I think it’s pretty obvious Wilson today was better than just about anything we’ve seen at Kansas from Remy.

  2. Team chemistry. Remy is new. The other guys have been playing together longer and when they find the flow like they did in the second half, they just know what the other 4 are going to do so things run more smoothly. This was true both offensively and defensively today as the communication on d was much improved.

Now, do I believe we are better without Remy? Not yet. Remy is a quality offensive player when healthy. He’s shown he can create for himself and others. I’m honestly wondering if he couldn’t be an amazing 6th man ala 08 sherron collins. A difference maker off the bench. A guy that may not start but may very well finish a lot of games. Teams would have to have a totally different game plan when he comes in because he’s different than any other guard we have on the team.

Now sherron played that roll because he was a freshmen pre transfer portal who knew he’d be the man in the next year or two. Remy only has this year and he came to Kansas to make the league and sitting behind Harris when that’s your goal is a tough pill to swallow. And I’m sure of there are people on this site claiming self has ruined Remy and made him worse, you know he’s hearing that from other places too. Maybe even his own head.

So for me, this team is at its best with Remy at his best. The question then is can he get healthy, and how will he handle the possibility of being a 6th man?

Or maybe I’m dumb and as soon as he’s healthy self starts him again. Our offense has looked really good at times with him and Harris on the floor together. I just don’t see Harris losing the starting spot this year and Wilson has made use of remys absence to make the case that he needs to start as well.
