Turns out the tests haven't been 100% reliable either. There's on-going work to improve that, but it contributes to the confusion and controversy over numbers and rates...
Well, this is an amateur take at One Shining Moment for the 2019-20 season, but it's probably the best we've got.
```
A bit light on coverage of the number 1 team.. And didn't see much Baylor or SDSU... Would have liked to see the Evanston victory over Kentucky highlighted a bit more... but maybe producer is a UK fan based on the chosen final shot.
@bskeet Natural selection won't work on this one because the people at greatest risk are post-reproductive. This outbreak won't change gene frequencies. Stupid behavior, the people who transmit the virus, won't be selected against.
Yeah, that was tounge-in-cheek -- Anytime I see someone take a stupid risk, I shake my head and say "Darwin". It's a sort of inside joke that doesn't translate well here.. Sorry.
COVID-19 has claimed lives at all ages and even people who were considered healthy, but at a much lower rate.
wow. same wavelength. @BShark @approxinfinity @FarmerJayhawk
Trump's bravado in the face of the crisis has been irresponsible.. and his administration's decision to cut funding to the CDC and dismiss the pandemic response team 2 years ago --- well, let's just say it hasn't aged well (he eschews responsibility and denies culpability -- Shocking).
That said, people have to make their own decisions. If they are gathering in the street, that's their decision. Trump didn't make them do that.
It should surprise NO ONE after 3 years that the president isn't providing adequate leadership and does not have our best interests in mind.
So we need to rely more on ourselves for common sense and diligent research. Know what is and isn't a good source of health information (CDC: yes, WHO: yes, WH: no). It's disappointing, but we all have to adapt.
Ultimately, the great arbiter is natural selection. Darwin will sort the stupidly cavalier from those fit to survive (with lots of collateral damage to those in the at-risk populations). It's pretty indiscriminate between republican and democrat.
He used another one of his 9 lives.
Just remember we are electing the leader of the USA, not the world... I'm no Bernie fan, though this is a moment that he can seize... and he clearly sounds more sensible next to Trump... but somewhat in the same way a turd is less dangerous than a toxic waste dump.
Not sure why anyone would want to make excuses for someone who makes mistakes that put people's lives at stake. It's a little different from running a luxury property and miscommunicating to staff where the 401k website is.
I think the NCAA will back the f down after this. Nobody is going to be calling for bloodletting. BC (Before Coronavirus) vs AD (After Da Coronavirus)
I want to believe, but I'm leaning toward the belief that the NCAA will readdress this as soon as they get back to business as usual. The only thing that might change that is if this rocks the institution -- say the power 5 conferences decide to confer with each other and hold their own tournament of 16 in May and do it for charity and compensate the players in some way. It sets a precedent of revenue generation and sharing and erodes the NCAA's authority... and it starts to establish a new standard..
Another thought: these seniors who get another year of eligibility could really pad their stats and create records that are impossible to beat for other athletes. School records, conference records and national records across all of the winter and spring sports...
Extreme case: Imagine Sabrina Ionescu staying another year. She already is at the top.. another year of competition would create records that are impossible to reach.
How in the hell did KU drop to #2 in NET behind Gonzaga by beating Texas Tech? What a garbage ranking tool.
I saw that too. This is a really good question.
My theory is that Gonzaga benefited by playing games in the WCC tournament -- they played USF and then St Marys.. USF is an opponent roughly equal to TT, but St Marys is a better opponent. They won 84-66. That might have nudged them forward.
I also have wondered if these seniors who are presumably done with school, but have another year of eligibility, could transfer? Will the NCAA put unique restrictions these players or do they make the transfer pool that much bigger this year?
Well, the football championship has 4 teams. They spread the three games out over three weeks.
For basketball, they could do the same and it would only take three days. Not that hard. And with four #1 seeds playing in the Final Four, it's not that much different from 2008.
Adding Lightfoot into the mix should make for an even more dynamic team. Hopefully McCormick learns how to emulate Doke a bit.
Our two-party system have set up a Prisoners Dilemma. We the people are caught in the middle.
That said, I'm ready to take the devil-I-know-less. (Although, I'll acknowledge that line of thinking is partly what led Trump to be elected.)
Matt Tait shared this on twitter and I found it pretty informative. The first 21 minutes and maybe the last 5 minutes are the relevant content and definitely worth the time spent.
It's an interview Michael Osterholm, an internationally recognized expert in infectious disease epidemiology. He is Regents Professor, McKnight Presidential Endowed Chair in Public Health, the director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (CIDRAP).
I DON'T HAVE A PARTY. The current republicans have made damn sure of that.
Trump could cure cancer? LOL.
Malignant Narcissist. Familiarize with what that is.
Haven't you heard? He has a "natural ability." Like medical knowledge is apparently a genetic trait! He shared this epiphany at the CDC last week.
Watch the video. It's vintage Trump. At the end, you can see how concerned he is about the numbers.
And these remarks that he made on the south lawn of the WH further illustrate to what lengths he will pursue a selfish agenda to downplay the numbers:
https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefings-statements/remarks-president-trump-marine-one-departure-84/ ↗
Oh, I'm sure he thinks he could cure cancer. That's his problem. Those who believe him... that's their problem.
I see no evidence that he listens to experts unless it serves his self-interests.
I was really looking forward to 9 more games with glorious dunks by Doke, scintillating drives by Dotson and sneaky steals by Garrett.
The record will speak for itself.
The South Carolina women's basketball coach suggested that she would accept the national championship given that they were ranked #1.
Time to get a list of "best of" the NCAA Tournament. We'll be watching re-runs.
@FarmerJayhawk said in NCAA Tournament: Should it happen?:
Ohio authorities estimate 1% of the state is carrying it. That’s almost 120,000 people.
This should sink in: Ohio officials estimate is that 120,000 are infected and contagious, but only have 5 confirmed cases.
For every confirmed case, there are about 20,000 infected.
There are more than 1000 confirmed cases in the US right now. That works out to 20 million infected in the US -- using Ohio as the estimate. That's about 15% of the population or 1 out of 6-7 people that you and I know.
Still coming to terms with the fact that we've seen our last game with Doke, Moss, and probably Dotson.
Just trying to work through the process... I'm currently somewhere between anger and depression, but trying to make my way to acceptance.
Now we get to look forward and move forward together.
Yeah, it's highly contagious. We shouldn't be surprised, but there will always be those who dismiss.
They could have moved the midwest regional to AFH. It's been hosted there in the past. I think they could have found the venues.. but yeah, media contracts and the insurance liability... I'm sure it's all very intricate. But super disappointing.
Leave it to the NCAA to make a decision that is questioned and criticized by many people.
I mean, look at all the other organizations that have made decisions in the last 24 hours which seem to be universally supported.. And then the NCAA does this.
NCAA follows KU in shutting it all down. We'd all be better off if the NCAA would just follow KU's lead more often ;-)
Well, it's been a pretty satisfying season with yet another unsatisfying ending. Are we cursed?
Gosh. I see the announcement now. Fudge.
@jayballer73 Yeah.. I heard it too. Just seems premature to make such a drastic decision.
ESPN says NCAA cancelled the tournament. Let's wait a hot minute and see if that is accurate.
@dylans said in NCAA Tournament: Should it happen?:
Hey-- you better get the TM on that now. You know how the NCAA is about things like that!
@jayballer73 said in Big 12 Tournament:
Coming across now that they still expect Selection Sunday , and then possible pushing back tournament - this coming from some high Level Coach's although they didn't give names
That would be a prudent course of action. They can use regular-season champions as automatic bids and they can maintain a touch of normalcy by seeding the tournament as planned.
This will give extra time for teams to prepare for their opponents.. but seems very reasonable to have things set and ready to go when the light changes to green.
I think the biggest thing a president can do is set an appropriate tone by speaking clearly and speaking the truth.
That starts with putting the interests of others ahead of his own. It means listening to experts and not dismissing and contradicting them. And it means avoiding over-statements, exaggerations and hyperbole.
I think this president has pattern of behavior that proves he is incapable of meeting ANY of these requirements.
In ANY business in the world other than a family-run business, this kind of incompetence would get you fired.
@nuleafjhawk said in NCAA Tournament: Should it happen?:
I'll take some flack for this because not everyone shares my beliefs. Here's what it boils down to for me personally.
Psalm 64:1 Hear my voice, O God, in my meditation;
Preserve my life from fear of the enemy.This applies to this and so many other things in the world. It's not about the actual "enemy" (coronavirus, in this instance) - it's about the FEAR of the enemy. The actual enemy is never as big as the fear of it, no matter what it is.
OK, you can start bashing me now.
I think that's fair. Right now it's hard to disentangle the impacts of the fear of the virus vs the actual virus.
The markets are all about speculation. The steep drop is partly — maybe mostly — a reflection of fear.
The actual impact of the virus is people missing work, racking up medial costs, causing some deaths... etc.
@Texas-Hawk-10 said in NCAA Tournament: Should it happen?:
@kjayhawks There's two things going on here. Sporting bodies are not caving to media pressure by cancelling or postponing events, they are listening to groups like the CDC and WHO and following their advice.
The people going out and buying multiple years with of TP and other sanitation products are the ones buying into the media fear mongering.
Pushing pause on life for 2-3 weeks to slow down the spread of this disease is a reasonable measure in this case based on what happened in Italy.
Agree with the caveat that the people hoarding TP may be victims of anxiety disorders as much as it could be the media. I tend to not blame the media for every stupid thing that people do.. just like I don't blame video games for mass murders, cars for car accidents.. guns, etc..
That said, not all media outlets practice responsible journalism and certainly provoke emotions.. which quickly becomes fear for those who are susceptible.
I think the debate will be hard to resolve. Even more of a challenge in the future when we look at things retrospectively.
If the curve flattens and the epidemic in the US turns out to be not as deadly and, instead have an impact that is similar to the common flu, the public health officials will see it as evidence the response was a success and skeptics will see it as evidence that it was overblown and a whole bunch of hooey.
The NCAA still hasn't announced their intention for the tournament.
The college conferences have acted. Several universities including KU have announced the suspension of all sports. The NBA, MBL, NHL, tennis.. pretty much everyone has made a decision already.
What does this protracted delay indicate about the NCAA's decision-making capabilities?
NBA is talking about pushing their season into July and possibly early August. Maybe the draft gets delayed... ?
NCAA should plan for a postponed tournament, not a cancelation.
@kjayhawks said in NCAA Tournament: Should it happen?:
I was just googling H1N1 and it happened in 2009 and was considerably more deadly. Virtually everything when on business as usual. I still think we are blowing this way outta proportion. We have done nothing in previous pandemics that statistically are 20 and 30 times deadly than this.
To those who are young and have no respiratory or auto-immune issues, and only care about themselves -- this probably seems like overkill because they are unlikely to be severely affected by this strain.
But for members of at-risk populations, it could be too little too late. Covid-19 is considerably more contagious than H1N1. No one has immunity, as it is novel. The mortality rate in at-risk populations may be as high as SARS.
@dylans LOL.. well, the market's growth over the last 2 years was a house of cards. The debt skyrocketed.. lots of Fed fiddling and infusing funds.. the bloodletting is scary, but not totally unexpected.
Also, you are absolutely right that this is an opportunity if you have resources and happen to time things right.
