Sports Armageddon.
Baseball and NHL suspending as per ESPN
I am hopeful that they will simply announce indefinite postponement of the tourney. I think they could seed the teams and then plan how to resume a tournament that starts possibly in mid-April and runs into May, pending containment and safety.

That doesn’t sound promising for an effective vaccine then.
Entirely possible. HIV took a long time to get under control. SARS, H1N1, Zika..not sure what's available.
i'm not a epidemiologist but my understanding is that this virus is corona-style which is not one that people tend to develop immunity as compared to chicken pox/shingles.. I think it's a different strain...
People can get the coronavirus more than once, experts warn — recovering does not necessarily make you immune

Not sure of the validity of this, so would encourage looking for other sources.

Azubuike went his entire career without playing a single minute in Big-12 tournament.
I had no idea. That is astounding.
Maybe I'm preaching to the choir, but when I hear people say: "....but there's only 1000 cases in the US..." I feel they are missing some key points:
1) There aren't enough test kits to test everyone with symptoms.
2) The incubation period is at least 14 days, and consequently...
3) ... an unknown number of people are infected, and unaware and un-symptomatic
4) It is known to be highly contagious and easily transmitted...
5) which means you might not have to come in contact with a contagious person, but simply in contact with something that was in contact with a contagious person.
6) I'm not even talking about mortality rate, which is unclear as well.
7) It's a novel virus, which means no one has immunity.
8) Best estimates are that a vaccine is a year away.
Given the unknowns, and the few knowns, I conclude that the actions are prudent. It sucks, but the population needs to take 2 weeks pause at least to let the infected people develop the symptoms so we can get a better sense of the scope.
NCAA will get their wish: we will finish the year number 1 with an asterisk.

He stuck his leg out into Garrett.
Exactly! Why the hell were the announcers so outraged? It looked like there was no contact on the shot and after the shot, Moretti initiated the contact with his leg and then FLOPPED. If there was any call, it should have been a flop warning.
What a crappy way for the announcers to finish what should have been a congratulatory ending.
We won conference by 2 games over a team that was TOP 5 in the nation and were undefeated on the road. We won when we already had the conference title secured and didn't have to win. We beat the national runner-up team on their home floor.. Come on.. That's far more impressive than a desperation 3 and a flop. Sheesh..
Both parties drive me nuts, but I'm still trying to understand this issue of funding. Sorry for my ignorance, but things just don't seem to add up.
@FarmerJayhawk says only the executive branch can reprogram funds and @kjayhawks says it came from social security, so does that mean it was Trump's decision to take the money from Social Security to fund the impeachment?
Also-- what does it mean that they (who is they in this case) blew money that wasn't theirs? The government can only use funds that are derived from taxes, which generated by laws created by the representatives that we have elected into position... So, I don't see how whatever money they used to fund the impeachment process was improper. Whether or not we want our tax dollars being used in such a way, we've given them the power to tax and the power to operate the government...
Anyway, there's a lot of misinformation out there, so I did a quick search and it appears the source of the story is from a "satirical" site: https://potatriotsunite.com/impeachbill/ ↗
Evidently, our wonderful social media has allowed this to proliferate and pollute the populace.
Here are fact-checking sites on the topic:

And here's the government's explanation:
https://www.ssa.gov/history/InternetMyths2.html ↗
It's getting real in Santa Clara county now. Several schools are closed and they just announced that the Sharks won't be playing home games indefinitely.
@kjayhawks Does it really work that way? Is the funding for an impeachment tied to the budget for social security? I never heard that before. Seems strange as impeachment is more of an enforcement action so, if funds had to deplete any specific area, I would think military would make more sense.. Anyway, it seems like the budget should be more fungible than that!
Would hate to have to go through Dayton to get to the FF. Hope they get seeded away from us.
Plus, the NCAA loves Dayton -- so close to Indy and the host of play-in games. They seem like nearly a lock for Elite Eight.

I do NOT want to see Michigan State.
I would upvote this 10 times if I could.
RE Seeding: I fully expect KU to be matched up in a bracket with Houston (Grimes) or Iowa (Moss) just for the NCAA's amusement.
Best sophomore season since Wilt. Possibly best sophomore guard/wing at KU. THAT is saying something pretty amazing.
The goal will be to win conference tonight. If that happens, then the options open up for resting players.
@mayjay I'm pretty sure one of those quotes came from the post-game panel interview and the other was probably a separate interview with a reporter.. possibly on the floor after the game or in the locker room. He said pretty much the same thing, but reporters should not be altering or putting words in his mouth.. Most reporters record the conversations so they can make sure to be accurate in their quote.
@Texas-Hawk-10 RIP JayBowl. Ahh..that is sad sad news. Thanks for letting me know!
I missed this one as well. I was at LMU for parent's weekend, where they celebrated the 89-90 elite 8 team and had a nice ceremony to unveil a statue for Hank Gathers (died 30 years ago this week). The game was competitive, but they lost by 3 to a fairly mediocre USF (San Francisco) team.
The WCC can be summarized as three teams that are pretty solid who have been recruiting international talent for 5-10 years, and all the others who are just now starting to recruit international talent to try to compete. Gonzaga, St Marys and BYU do get some challenges in league from time to time, but it's nothing like the relentless gauntlet that the power 5 conferences provide.
There's some legendary BBQ in KC. If you have the time, and you like that kind of thing, hit any one of the top 5 spots in KC and you can't go wrong.
When you get to campus, I would second @ku4bob and @BShark -- the Natural History Museum has some great exhibits (and family ties for me). It's in Dyche Hall which is next door to the Union where, in the basement, you can go bowling at the Jay Bowl... And there's the Spencer Art Museum below the Union and across the street.
All of that is pretty close to each other on one side of campus. The Fieldhouse, and the DeBruce Center (which is attached) is across campus.
I can't think of many other things that are set up as attractions for visitors... Some might say The Wheel is must see.. I assume it's still there. Not sure about many other bars, like the Hawk... Those are/were just off campus..
I'm sure there are some other hidden gems on campus, but I think I took them for granted and have forgotten.

I would actually prefer to have the Dookies and Kentucky in our bracket. They’re big names and they suck
Well, I think it's a bit hyperbolic to say they suck.. but emotionally, I hear you!
They are both having a down year and we're having the remarkable season for a change!
However... every year it seems like one of the champions classic teams makes a surprisingly strong run.. The team I'm still apprehensive of?
Michigan State.
Whether they are at the start of the tournament or not, some brackets are buffeted with upsets and become easier than others.
This team is playing as well as I could have hoped for at the beginning of the season.
As much as last year was a disappointment, this year has been a pleasant surprise.

@kjayhawks Yes, Broadway and 9th is probably not the premium real estate destination in town, unless you want to walk to the mall very quickly. As you and others have pointed out, there are really good and really bad neighborhoods in most towns.
Unless you live in Port Arthur, Tx - then it's all bad. (Lord, please don't let anyone here live in Port Arthur.....)
I don't know Port Arthur, but the most depressing city I ever drove through was Bastrop, Louisiana. That said, it was in 1988, so maybe it's changed..
It's the chain restaurant capital of the US.
UNC's bad luck is epic this year.
Wilder was a gracious loser. Fury earned my respect from that interview.
I'm a bit surprised that both are so articulate. You'd think the head blows would catch up with them eventually.
Yeah.
I worked at the Burlington (Vt) Free Press 89-91 when Sanders was mayor and he won his first term in congress. It was stunning to see the staunch conservatives in the "northeast kingdom" back him because he was so far left he started to appeal to libertarians.
He calls himself a "democratic socialist" today, but he was unapologetically a socialist back when he was mayor. He and several on his staff took winter trips to Cuba. I don't think his philosophy has changed... but he has honed his messaging very well.
Who (other than Doke) do we credit for this remarkable transformation? Is this Hudy's work?
Oachi is a sophomore. I know, I know.. Dotson is too, but he's a freak. Oachi is a normal sophomore. He's contributing with his defense and his offense is slumping a bit.. But if he keeps improving, he could start contributing some meaningful points in the post-season. Really, that's the best we can hope for. That's why we have a veteran like Moss on the team; he's taking the shooting pressure off Oachi this year.
But don't forget what Oachi did last year-- his shooting form is a thing of beauty... he's pure. That's the same guy... He's getting lots of reps on defense and building up his size right now. He'll be in the spotlight next year.
And Bloomberg...? Does this mean the debate makes him a non-factor?
This has been a pretty entertaining exchange.. hope no one is taking it too seriously..
my 2 cents Drew is better than mediocre -- he's at least a decent coach and probably a good coach. I think you have to give him some credit for two teams that got to the Elite Eight and lost to the eventual national champ.. and another year was a #1 seed.
No, he hasn't won the B12, but KU had a historic run for 14(!) years.
If he's not a good coach, then he has to be considered a very good recruiter, because that means he's doing some pretty good stuff simply with the talent he's brought in.
This game will be the measuring stick (for KU) for the rest of the season until the final four.
Best chance to win in March is to get good matchups. Predictions this time of year, when the possible matchups are not narrowed, is pretty much just entertainment.
Duke lost by 22 (!) ETSU looking like a dangerous mid-major.
Saturday: Game of the year.
For your consideration: Dotson: Only player in NCAA with 450 points, 100 rebounds, 100 assists and 50 steals.
I love Doke and Garrett, and there are good cases for each. This is a good problem to have.

Doke has missed more FT's than shots from the field this year.
I think that's a statement on his range.
The disdain for OU and Tubbs was right there with Mizzou for several years. The 88 championship was such sweet justice after the rivalry became bitter. It seemed to deflate OU and put KU on a trajectory that we continue to enjoy today.
Wayman Tisdale was the one that got it started for me.. then Stacy King, Mookie Blaylock.. the Grant brothers.. they were just stacked and had such attitude.
Over the years, I have grown to respect some of those players a bit (Tisdale RIP). But less so for Tubbs, and that video illustrates why. It's vintage Tubbs. He and Norm Stewart earned their place in basketball purgatory, as far as I'm concerned.
Four days to prepare for the game of the year.
It will be a very interesting game to say the least. Baylor absolutely manhandled us at home. So much at stake.
For us, a chance to share the Big12 title and virtually lock up a #1 seed.
Baylor has a chance to be the first outright Big12 champ not named Kansas since OSU 03-04, and become the prohibitive favorite to win it all this year.
It was a tough loss. Vivid like the loss to Arizona and the Northern Iowa losses.
Fortunately, the antidote is to watch the final KU vs Missouri game, or the ISU vs EJ game... or the comeback vs WVU a couple years ago and the E8 game vs Duke. Ah, those are sweet.
(not to mention any of the run to the 88 or 08 NCs)
Every comment I read was like "ouch" and "ooof" and "aargh"..
this thread should come with "Warning: Could cause PTSD"
Probably the best game of the year so far. This team is improving week by week. They have a high ceiling.
Will it be a glorious run in March or a Northern Iowa flame out?
If a coach ever told a player to be a hitting machine... I'm sure they didn't visualize it this way.
@approxinfinity shhhhhh!

If you’re driving AT the speed LIMIT, isn’t that what you’re supposed to do? See, there’s a minimum and a maximum that you can LEGALLY drive. Some of us actually do that backwards, hillbilly stuff. I would drive much, much faster but that would compromise my texting/drinking/changing clothes in the car skills.
Yes it is what we are supposed to do -- unless it causes problems with the flow of traffic or is otherwise unsafe.
The driver needs to take into account the environment.
I think this makes for a decent analogy:
If the speed limit is 55 and everyone is driving 65-70 and I drive 47, it would be legal but it would also be a hazard. Likewise, 55 in a 55 zone could be too fast in ice and fog, etc.. Some people drive faster than they should.. others drive slower.. No one gets hurt if we all drive about the same.
Police set up speed traps and pull multiple cars over when they want to make a point that everyone is driving too fast and they want to change the behavior of the community.
That's analogous to what the NCAA has done with a handful of schools.
They set up a speed trap as a signal to the coaching community to slow down. My problem with it is that they only seemed to snare the adidas schools, which is like a speed trap that only catches German cars.
Anyway..
If I drive 65 in a 55, and get snared in a speed trap with 5 or 6 other cars, I would find it a bit extreme if someone called me a criminal.
and that's why I wouldn't call Self a "liar and a cheater" in this situation. He was going 65 like most of the community. He got snared. But the snare was discriminate and selective.
