just my opinion here, but I don't think we should ever apologize or devalue the conference championships. Conference championships are championships. It's that simple.

Regional Championships are fantastic and National Championships are special.

I want KU to win those just like every other fan.

But statistically, teams that win Conference are more likely to win Regional and National Championships. So that's reason enough to care for Conference Titles.

We're overdue.

@approxinfinity I can imagine we can wait on the emojis given that we all need time to lift our jaws off the ground and clean our shorts after watching that Spurs vs Warriors game... Get well soon!

Hey lets go down memory lane • Oct 20, 2016 05:59 AM

I totally agree with #1 and #2 -- especially if we're talking regular season. However, if we are just talking over the past 12 years, I think you have to include some pretty great NCAA games in the mix including one particular overtime game in April 2008.

This thread STILL makes me LMAO!

Timeless Brilliance!

@dylans The mere fact that you have alerted us to this situational bad karma may neutralize the bad juju and give us the chance we need in Morgantown... The good guys have to show up ready to battle for this one.

Wish i could share some with all of you! The good news about California is the ability to easily cook outdoors many months of the year... It's allowed me to practice a lot, but I am still in awe of the the ribs I get back in Kansas.

Oklahoma Joes are fantastic, and the best I've ever had I think were down at a small bar in Williamsburg, KS called Guy & Mays. Sadly, the last time I was there was maybe 1993... I think it was about a 90 min drive from Lawrence. In fact, I think I took a girl on a date there.. If you've ever been there, you know how bold that was. Not exactly a date kind of spot. But every time I went there, the ribs were cheap (maybe $12 /slab) and heavenly.

here's my set up.. I have to do it myself because in California you can't find real BBQ...

UGH.

70-80 other poor souls have probably had the same reaction to this post...

It's not even April fools day..

Buddy is shaping up to be have a phenomenal final season of college basketball. He is clearly a great college player. Even better, he's a good kid... so it's easy to like him.

He'll get drafted in the NBA, which is an amazing accomplishment -- period. And well deserved.

However, great college players do not always become great NBA players.

Occasionally a good college player becomes a great NBA player (Steph Curry, Kawhi Leonard.) But it seems there are more examples of great college players becoming average professionals (Tyler Hansbrough, Evan Turner, Jimmer Fredette, Andrew Bogut. and these are just the Wooden Award Winners).

It is what it is.

Even more confounding is the fact that what makes a player successful at the next level isn't even totally within the player's control. They could have the talent and skills that would make them above average, yet land in a system that is a bad fit, or with other talent that overlaps or isn't complementary... or any number of other things.

All I'm saying is that it's hard to predict how these guys will fare at the next level. The only college player I'm willing to wager money on is Ben Simmons. But even with his talent, it might not translate to greatness at the next level.

@approxinfinity Sweet.. nothing like an instant classic to get the community hoppin'

@Crimsonorblue22 Holy crap.

That explains a lot. (and I don't mean his frequent flyer totals)

Ok. That was fun. But is KU really #1? • Jan 07, 2016 04:51 AM

@drgnslayr I hope the recruits hear those comments..

It's about time there was some reverence for the B12. I guess it takes something special to break the ACC hypnotic trance.

And something else I hope they point out-- that this league is set up for true Round Robin, so everyone can pencil the date when KU goes to Norman. No scheduling bias to complain about here. When the B12 season is done, the champ has gone through a gauntlet unlike any other team in a major conference.

I just wish that was translating in to National Championships!

@approxinfinity Just was noticing that the KU - OU game chat had 3500 views and almost 600 posts.. Not sure if that's a record, but it's gotta be one of the top threads. In addition, there have been more than a dozen threads spawned by the game... all getting good activity. And there's more than just the usual suspects contributing and discussing.. In all, seems like a very active week :-)

This is about the time when Kelly started getting real minutes last year. Kelly was a lot more polished than Cheick at this time.

Right on.. Folks seem to forget this fact.. And Oubre did not have a 5-game suspension.. So if they progress at similar rates, Diallo's moment may come a few games deeper in the conference schedule than Oubre.

IMO CHIECK is really the telltale factor as to how far we go this March

Fascinating observation, given that Chieck didn't play much in this game, but I had the same feeling on Tuesday after reflecting on the game.

But I don't know why I have that gut feeling.

LL, Mari and Mick have the kind of mix of experience and athleticism we would typically want for the Post-by-committee duty. I like Bragg as well -- he's had some nice moments and had more time to learn the system.

I guess the difference is Chieck is our only player with elite length... and it just feels like you need a solid lengthy player to get into April.

classic! Also, I love the term "basketball pews"... I think that's what my family called them too!

Yes and we still haven’t seen Perry have career game yet. That will be sweet.

Is he saving it for a Regional Final or a National Championship? I'm excited to see Perry at his best! I think he was a 9.5 (out of 10) last night..

Ok. That was fun. But is KU really #1? • Jan 06, 2016 05:21 AM

The luminescent game Monday pitted the #1 team according to the sports writers against the #1 team according to the coaches,

After three overtimes in hallowed Allen Fieldhouse -- one of the greatest home-floor advantages in the sports world -- Kansas won by 3 points.

Now, both teams are 12-1.

If you were a coach that voted Sunday night/Monday morning for Oklahoma, would the outcome of this game change your mind about who is #1?

Buddy Hield • Jan 06, 2016 04:51 AM

@Crimsonorblue22 I yelled at the TV, but it was meant for the refs... That's obligatory!

In retrospect, that Mason steal at the end of the first half that led to Self's Technical foul was probably a sort of offering to the basketball Gods in exchange for a no-call at the end of the 3rd OT when Mason again got a steal on an in-bounds...

Buddy Hield • Jan 06, 2016 04:42 AM

Everything you need to know about Kansas Basketball:

  1. Kansas Fans do not storm the court after winning a 3OT game pitting #1 vs #1 some call "the best regular-season game in history."
  2. KU fans applaud the leading scorer of the opposing team, Buddy Hield, who scored 46.

All that other stuff, like the inventor of the game was the first coach, the Phog Allen pedigree of coaches, etc. etc.. is just icing on the cake.

Oklahoma vs Kansas Chat • Jan 05, 2016 05:26 AM

This was the most impressed I've been by an opponent since Durant.

Congratulations B. Hield! The dude totally earned my respect with a special performance in a game for the ages.

Oklahoma vs Kansas Chat • Jan 05, 2016 05:21 AM

I saw my share of losses in the Ted Owens era... but then saw my share of victories in the Brown and Williams eras... I have not seen a game in the Phog in the Self era, but I think the odds would have been in my favor!

That game when Peeler ripped off 43 I recall clearly. He was insane. But we won :-)

This is my favorite game since the final KU v MU game.

Good response in the 2nd half by the Hawks against a pretty game UC Irvine team.

John Higgins is reffing tonight. He did most of KU's losses last year so officiating is something to keep an eye one tonight.

I didn't realize this until now, but it explains a lot. There were some pretty terrible calls and no calls -- mostly times where SDSU was out of bounds and there was no call or where a ball was off an Aztec and the call was wrong.

Oh Ye Of Little Faith • Dec 12, 2015 10:18 PM

@KUSTEVE Love your perspective. Right on.

Good luck to Duke when Coach K retires. We'll see if you can keep it going without skipping a beat.

North Carolina had the dip after Dean. Kentucky has had it's misfires after Rupp and will likely be challenged after Calipari leaves (probably in a smoldering pile of ashes from an NCAA nuclear blast).

Our most recent 3 coaches have had a level of excellence that is not seen by other programs. It's really remarkable and something to be treasured.

We may or may not win #12 this year... but regardless of this year's outcome, the team has been graced with amazing talent and good character for a long time. It's a joy to be a fan!

I think the best explanation is that HCBS was feeding comments to the media that would supplant the minutes that Traylor lost to Diallo. He needs Jamari to stay engaged. He can't afford to lose him (mentally, emotionally or spiritually) because Jamari knows the system and, as a senior, is less likely to have lapses and is more predictable in critical moments in games. That said, Self knows that Diallo has more talent and is going to need to get more and more minutes.

Self is always coaching... And he knows how to use all the tools at his disposal to get the most out of the team. Don't take this the wrong way, but the media is a sort of tool for him.

I think he's savvy, not delusional. Maybe I just choose to see it that way... (but I'll look at his .800 winning percentage as exhibit A)

The 3 has been freed...(not really) • Nov 25, 2015 09:23 PM

For those who love the metrics of the game, this article suggests a seismic shift in the NBA game:

http://fivethirtyeight.com/features/how-the-golden-state-warriors-are-breaking-the-nba/ ↗

  • " It’s as if at some point in the past few years, the Warriors solved contemporary basketball, at least perimeter basketball. They know that 3-pointers are the best way to rack up points on offense, so they developed talent and tactics to master that. But they have also employed defensive principles to prevent their opponents from doing so on the other end."
Diallo is Cleared! Now what? • Nov 25, 2015 09:02 PM

I'm not sure Self would want to play him tonight, even if he were eligible. I heard Self say that he wasn't allowed to practice or lift weights with the team -- just travel. Given that, he probably isn't ready to slip into our system seamlessly.

I suspect even with the early Dec games, his time will be limited a bit.

FREE DIALLO • Nov 25, 2015 08:56 PM

Hey, @drgnslayr maybe we should change the title of this thread from "Free Diallo" to "Diallo Free"?

Diallo is Cleared! Now what? • Nov 25, 2015 08:52 PM

I'm going to try not to get too excited, given the variability in our previous top freshmen's readiness.. Wiggins and Oubre were able to contribute to a B12 Championship, but not a NCAA Regional Champion (FF).

I'm trying to manage my expectations.
