@Crimsonorblue22 so was coach k but I'd probably take him as well
@Crimsonorblue22 and maybe you do know that but you just haven't said anything about it because there are enough people like me on here to say it. And that's cool, I've been in that same boat.
@Crimsonorblue22 ya gotta admit though, Self has some Elite Eight issues.
@FarNrthJHwk welcome aboard! I love this board. Lots of good intel and thoughtful discussion, people watch their language, no silly name-calling (except for other teams' coaches), people generally keep their heads on straight. I think the only other coach people on this site like is Izzo. And Bill Self is beyond reproach for a few. And a lot of people confuse critiquing someone (esp Bill Self) as calling for his head.
But other than that, great board. I can tell already that you'll enjoy, and we'll enjoy having you among us.
I'll take Bill Self any day for Elite Eight. (Just kidding. Give me Izzo.)
I can't imagine him getting fired, but I could imagine him leaving.
Not fired though. Roy lasted 15 years without a single title.

2013 we blow a 12 point lead in 2 minutes to michigan
Did we really have a 12 point lead with 2 minutes left?
@jaybate-1.0 surely Bill has this all figured out as well right? Why doesn't he switch to Nike if there's such an advantage?
@Kcmatt7 then I guess my next question is, what's the advantage of Nike over Adidas? And how is that sold (from each camp) to the kid?
@jaybate-1.0 maybe it's been asked, and I ask this out of ignorance, but how do Nike schools get the better talent? What's the process?

@chriz wasn't comparing the two teams but more of the fan bases.
Do you think their fans had lots to say as to why he wasn't getting past the Sweet 16?
We're the blaming it on lack of talent? Need to recruit better?
Kinda seeing that here from a few folks.
I hear ya. I'm not one of the ones calling for Bill's head (can't say I've actually seen anyone on here calling for his head, doesn't mean they don't exist though.)
If I'm a Gonzaga fan, I cut the coach some slack because I'm not in a power conference and I can't get the same talent as the blue bloods. KU on the other hand, with all of the talent we've had, surely has to have been one of the top for teams in the country more often than we've been to the Final Four.

Just a thought about this, because it has been mentioned a lot. Does this reflect a flaw in short-turnaround coaching by Self but his 12-5 record in the second round with that same turnaround does not mean the opposite?
I'd expect better results against teams that aren't considered to be a top 30 team.

Does anyone know (or care) what Gonzaga fans blamed Mark Few's curse of the Sweet 16 on?
He had only reached the Elite 8 once before this year with 6 apparences in the Sweet 16.
This is in 17 total apparences before this year.
With less talent because it's Gonzaga, not KU.

To critique tourney performance is much different than calling for his head. I think that is what a clear majority have done with their comments – critique and discuss.
Exactly. I'm in the camp of "dammit, Bill, figure this thing out". He's at a top 4 school, gets paid a lot of money, and the tournament is kind of a big deal.
At the same time, would I rather have another coach? I can't think of one of rather have. Of course it kills me that Roy could win his 3rd title in 13 years at UNC. Tough comparison there though as it's obviously much easier to recruit to UNC than it is to KU.
The 14 in a row is an incredible achievement. But I'd rather multiple NCAA titles by now. Give me even one more title and you can have the streak.
I don't want to fire Bill. I just see a 2-7 Elite Eight record here and hope he figures it out.
@KansasComet I can see how that happened. My thing is, it's always something. Why are we 5 times out of 7 saying the other team has some trick that got them to the Final Four and we just couldn't do it?
Don't get me wrong, glad to have been there the 2 times we were. But for a team that was supposed to win at least 4 out of those other 5 times, why didn't we?
It's always something. And that was okay for me for the past few occurrences. But I guess this year put me over the top. If they're favored in the Elite Eight again next year, who would I put money on? Not KU. And that's not good.

We’re going to win again one of these years. Keep the faith.
Actually, I appreciate the optimism.

How much of the game yesterday was on Self and how much of the KU performance in the tournament over the past decade and a half is on Self? I think some of it has to be - he is the one constant. Having said that, he is without question one of the small handful of best college coaches, a Hall of Famer, and I would still rather have Self than any other coach in the game - yes. But that doesn’t mean he is or should be immune from a critical assessment of why we continue to fall short of ours and his expectations…
Couldn't have said it better myself.
Every year there's been hope with Self and the Jayhawks. After losses like these, I'm always looking forward to the next year, recruiting classes, imagining the starting lineups and how they might be better that the current year's.
But this year, I'm out of hope.
I know, I'm spoiled. We were in the Final Four five years ago. Oregon hasn't been since dinosaurs roamed the earth. Good for them.
But bad for us. Again.
No shame in losing to Kentucky in '12. But yeah, I think KU has gone from being mildly disappointing in the tournament to flat out disappointing. Maybe we're over-seeded? I'm starting to think we often are. The Big XII is obviously weak year after year come tourney time, so there's that. Not sure why they do so well before conference play starts.
Anyway, why should I think next year will be any different? Is this just who we are, the low end of the blue bloods?
Throw away the streaks. I want national titles. And I'm not confident that we'll get close any time soon. At least to the standard that I think a program like Kansas should be held to.
Maybe I should manage my expectations?
If we need this kind of motivation to beat Oregon, we're already in trouble.
@cragarhawk true, and UNC apparently does well with revenge, based on tonight

@chriz I am. UCLA has an extremely powerful offense I'd rather take on The streaky kids from U.K. I just think HCBS has Cal's # ... Balls' 🏀 old man has had enough press-Send em home,
Rooting for them against UNC for the same reason!
@Crimsonorblue22 cameras weren't invented yet lol
I think I had Steve Alford's haircut in middle School
I assume we're rooting for Kentucky?
What's our tournament points per possession defense? I'd bet it's impressive.
Final four?! I'll be disappointed if we don't win the next 3 games by an average of 20!
Q: How did Frank introduce himself to Lightfoot?
A: Mitch, I'm Frank Mason.
(Sorry, couldn't resist.)
What a joy to watch. Unbelievable.
Reggie loves him some Jayhawks.
If Self ever left, would you take Painter? I would, just for the fact that he used MU for leverage that one time. That was awesome.
@Eric-san yes actually, I'd love for him to do that. I see your point, but I'd still take the tech free throws and the additional foul on Bridges.
Good for him and his program. Would be more interesting to have his wife on though.
So on the punk shove by Bridges after the Frank layup, can Frank get the refs to review it? It's a flagrant foul, right?
@drgnslayr I'm missing something...
Would be @Blown away if Frank doesn't win this. (See what I did there?)
Vote for Frank!
@stoptheflop that's what I thought too but didn't Bridges tell the announcer that someone hit him? Didn't look like he did at all. Mason was probably like, WTF was that for? Lol
Just watching the replay, looks like Bridges thought Mason have him the stinger in the beginning then Bridges tried to return the favor on the inbounds. First half.
Don't forget to vote!
My thoughts: Bragg need to pull his head out of his ass, and Coleby was 💰💰💰
Voting starts tomorrow, March 20th. Here's the link:

Another excellent coach (Marshall) that we seem to feel good about trashing.
Sure seemed to kick our a** in the NCAA tourney, I tend to recall. We had our excuses, ad nauseam.
Seems to be an excellent coach, has taken low to no ranked guys and has won, and certainly coaches with an edge.
Really who DON'T we trash on this site except for Izzo? No one is as diplomatic as Self, I'll give him credit for that, but still. Seems weird that we bash so many other coaches. Like "Stumpy." What did he do to us? Seems like a great coach to me who is in the top 10-15 annually. I can't think of anything he's done that people couldn't accuse Self of doing the same.
So he's playing tomorrow, right? Is Dok with one hand better than Bragg with two? 😉
Unbelievable that Crean has fallen so far since his victory over KU.
On another note, who do you think would win more games if he coached at KU, Dooley or Marshall?
So JJ has been one of the best OADs we've seen in college basketball since I can remember, in terms of 1) "unpacking his bags" and 2) performing. With all the hate against the OAD scenario, JJ is a glorious exception to the rule.
Is Porter anything like JJ from the unpacking his bags perspective? If so, do we have ANY chance at getting him? Weren't we mildly in the running for a while?
Loved those Selden highlights!
How in the eff was that a flagrant 1?
