I wonder if Purdue is having any open practice minutes while in KC?
Would be nice to scout it out!

I slightly remember that. I know she verbalized some nonsense about Oubre.
No Shocker: Wichita's the tougher team ↗
"For 40 minutes, Lynn Marshall had expended as much energy as Gregg did, screaming at Wichita players and KU players and the officials. "
Here is the list of incentives for coaches who made it into the Sweet 16. Strangely, Calipari actually gets ZERO performance incentive rewards, perhaps because he only receives $7 million per year at Kentucky.
Hey... our Jayhawks are having an open practice this afternoon.
I wish I could make it but can't. If anyone here can attend, it would be great if they could take some photos and report back here.
Give us your insights.
Good point. Very good point.
I would just like to see him move back a bit when he gets nailed. Nothing too dramatic. But I've seen him sometimes actually selling the call for the opposition.
I can't respect that. Sure... I do respect a player for not flopping. Flopping, in my book, is the desire to deceive.
"Selling a call" is just dramatizing the truth. Monster difference from a flop. I totally HATE flopping!
If a player isn't ready to compete in the game using all the legitimate tools to win, then I can't respect him in that area. It tells me that player feels too elite or entitled to go "all out" in order to win.
Just my opinion.
BTW: Landen often gets totally victimized by other bigs because of this one area. And it is totally unnecessary. Landen has worked his butt off on the court and in the weight room, adding strength. He has the strength to hold his own. Now he needs to feel self-confident enough to "sell himself" to the refs. It is rare when a championship trophy is given to anyone or any team playing the victim role.
Entertaining reads over there.
What is funny is they make the same complaints we make about sports bias except they tend to include Kansas on "the other side." We always feel like we get under-promoted half the time and then over-promoted at the wrong time. I remember all the over-promotion we received when we brought in the Selden class. Yes... it was one of the best recruit classes in the nation, but we were as green as they get.
I just hope we aren't looking past Purdue. This game could end up going easy for us.... or we could finish our year on Thursday. And, or course, anything in between is possible.
Out of every team in the tournament WE should realize more than anyone the importance of not taking any team for granted!
It is extremely frustrating having to try to educate people on the difference of "flopping" versus "selling a call."
I hate flopping.... but selling a call is part of the game. Period.
I'm just suggesting we take advantage of the game itself. I'm not into Marcus Smart flopping.
I'm just into selling calls. In a selling calls situation the foul is there, but needs to be sold to go our way versus for the other team.
Selling calls is a part of basketball, always has been. It's a skill just like using shot fakes. You can either fight it and pay the price, or take advantage of something your competitor is taking advantage of, too.
I'm sick of us playing at that disadvantage. Landen has been the biggest victim in this. He just plays "straight up." You can probably remove 1 out of every 4 or 5 fouls he gets called for if he just sold the actual foul, which was committed by the other guy.
Look at our game with Michigan State. He got called for an offensive foul for backing in to the low post. In that particular case, it was a "no call" turned into a foul against Landen. In that one case, he wasn't going to sell a call that the defender fouled him because there was so little contact in the play. But the defender sold it and got a call that probably shouldn't have been called.
We are constantly being victimized by these foul calls because other teams "sell it."
I would hate to lose a NC just because of that one factor. Heck... there is questions on the Devonte foul versus Nova last year that played a key role in that game... which really turned out to be the NC game because I'm fairly certain we could have won the title if we had beaten Nova.
I think the consistency topic was more aimed at our record for consecutive NCAA appearances.... what is it now, 28?

"No one has been more consistent than Self."
What do you know... those 13 consecutive conference championships did pay off!
In your video, Josh talks about how important it is for him to win, too.
Basketball is a strange game. Part checkers, part chess.
Coaches can get into trouble if they think too much with either philosophy. They have to look at moves ahead, but not too far ahead and must still focus on the current game.
We shouldn't be thinking too far ahead. One game at a time
I do think about making it to the FF having won three games in a row against the B10 "mug ball" style. So will we have a struggle toning our game back down to less contact? Foul trouble?
But first things first... let's knock out Purdue!
I like how our guys thrive on mug ball now. They aren't backing down from anyone! Big plus!
MSU must really hate us. We stole their Michigan guy and beat them with him.
That has to hurt....
Right now is the busy time in recruiting... especially for guys like Self who have a couple spots to fill while he has to get ready for Thursday's game.
Coaching changes so players want out of LOIs and players leaving early for the league... It's one big blender right now.
No time to sleep on recruiting. This is the time of year that assistant coaches really earn their keep, too.
All hands on deck.
Funny and depressing at the same time.
So cute!
I'd like our entire team to watch this video.
Even LeBron sells calls now and then.
We have some physical games coming up. Or just GAME if we can't get passed Purdue.
We need to win the foul wars. Think about the impact of even one of those calls not going our way? So Lucas picks up his fourth personal instead of hanging the fourth personal on Swanigan....
We also need to do more to draw fouls. More shot fakes!
I think we can disrupt his flow considerably with quick double-teams once he has the ball in the post. Our guards are quick and have quick hands. They need to poke at the ball while he has the ball down low.
We only have to think back 12 months ago. When Perry was shut out in the Nova game. When he got the ball in the post the help showed up.... mostly to disrupt his flow.
Clearly, Wright watched a lot of tape on Perry and his post moves. We should be doing the same thing with Swanigan right now. Study his moves and then have our guards hit him with peskiness. Step into his path and close off his post move. Etc, etc etc.
Like you said, don't try to block his shot wildly... or we will have instant foul trouble. Go straight up and hope he rams in for the charge.
I still like making him a target for fouls. As soon as we get him in foul trouble, Purdue is toast. Just look at our game with MSU. Big man gets in foul trouble, we go on a roll! The plus-minus stats on Ward told the entire story of this game. That game would have gone down to a nail-bitter had Ward stayed out of foul trouble. Heck... they were a big plus on stats when he was on the floor!
Look for the classless story.
I'm doubtful that Purdue will risk putting Swanigan on Jackson. Way too risky. But... who knows? It makes me think about what defense Purdue will throw at us.
Imagine Josh jacking wide open treys all game? Or having Swanigan defend out away from the basket? How will they rebound?
I know one thing... when you have a player do something very different from what he is used to, there is a great chance he screws up and gets in foul trouble.
I know we have problems to deal with concerning matchups. But how would you like to have Purdue's problems?
Hope not! But I will feel a bit better about him leaving if he leaves us with some hardware!
Watch him pull it out of his hat ! ! !

What sticks out? Okay... keep it clean. Ur... unless....
Devonte Graham is our Magic Man!
It seems like every National Champion team has a Magic Man. Someone who comes up with the magic when needed most to propel his team to victory.
That is Devonte Graham. We could see this coming a mile away. Devonte rarely received the same level of credit as his other two amigos were blessed with. But Kansas fans have always known Devonte has a skill set unmatched by anyone in college basketball. Devonte has "the magic!"
Remember back to the 2008 National Championship game. Kansas down and almost out, until the magic arrived, just in time to bring Kansas back in the game.
Devonte possesses the same "sleight of hand" skills that we had on our 2008 team. He's already shown these skills in the two tournament games. And look what Devonte did, single-handed, to Michigan State at the end. He dismantled MSU's hopes of mounting any kind of comeback after he nailed 3 consecutive threes.
Devonte's magic is our secret weapon, and no other team has a weapon like Devonte. Let's hope Devonte not only pulls a rabbit out of his hat, but also uses his magic wand to bring back another National Championship to Lawrence!
Rock Chalk, Devonte, and to all our gutsy men!

Time to put all efforts towards the Naismith award!
Good point!
Yeah... we have to stay focused on the advantages we have in some of these mismatches more than the disadvantages.
If they want to run two big then we need to go at them for fouls and to tire them out. Keep the pace moving... substitute a lot, including using Dwight for real minutes.
Contrary to what many traditional basketball enthusiasts think... mismatches often appear like the big man has the advantage (and probably does as long as the other player/coach buy into it).
Josh can go all over the floor and can help his team. Swanigan has to stay in the post to do his team some good. So what happens when Josh sits on the trey line waiting to nail treys? Will Swanigan go after him? And how? Josh can run circles around him.
What we have to realize is we can take Swanigan out of this game EASILY (with foul trouble) by bringing guards into his space and using shot fakes to get him to commit. Heck... just have our guards body into him on their shots and that will usually draw fouls because refs have never been fair to the bigger defender concerning foul calls.
I hope we take a proactive plan into this game. If we can draw fouls on Swanigan, Purdue is toast! If we think of the game like this... we just go after him from the opening tip and within a few minutes, we already take a huge advantage in this game. Stick two fouls on Swanigan by the 15-minute mark of the first half? Force Purdue to bench him until the second half? Then Swanigan is out of his game, even if he comes back the second half. And of course, we will go right after him then, too. And what can he do? The only thing he can do to play it smart is to become less aggressive, on both sides of the floor.
MESSAGE TO LANDEN LUCAS: Do the right thing... and sell the call to the refs. No one wants you to pull phony flops. Just be willing to go backwards on certain contact and get the calls! Part of why you haven't been properly respected by refs this year is because you play every game with ZERO theatrics! Selling calls is part of the game.
Just one call can make the difference of becoming a National Champion or not.
Little news...
Cuonzo signs at Mizzou for 7 years and hasn't shared info on Porter's dad coming over to the coaching staff.
Wow. What a way to start your new coaching job.... dealing with the Porter stuff.
I don't claim to know anything about IP spoofing.... so what I posted could be wrong. I trust your experience a lot more than mine!
Really enjoyed your post!
Drew has an issue from his past concerning recruiting. He came to Baylor and we all know the Baylor administration lacked credibility... so we all wonder if he recruited fairly, especially since he was able to land so much talent and bring it to a school not known as a basketball powerhouse.
But if we look deeper in recent years. we will find that Baylor is building a reputation for being more than a questionable school.
Drew has done a pretty good job recently at developing players that were not 5-star recruits.
Drew has shown a lot of heart for his players, too.
I used to be outrageously hard on Drew. But I've opened my mind on him to see him in a different light (recently).
I used to compare Drew to Calipari. I compare them today... and I like Drew a helluva lot more than I can bear Calipari.
Calipari still does very tacky recruiting practices... literally drafting hiphop stars, NBA players and a complete circus of players to go recruiting for him. I still can't believe the NCAA won't investigate some of these practices. I recall just a few years ago when the NCAA got involved with fans who built recruiting pages trying to lure in recruits. Much of that was smacked down... yet Calipari has a team of all of these people recruiting for him... meeting with recruits, etc.
What I'm getting at... Drew is human. He has a heart. He cares about his players and he works his butt off to make them better. He isn't just a recruiter now. He has lifted his coaching abilities, too. I've heard him speak over the years... in the beginning at Baylor, he sounded like he was on the same rookie level as Calipari. He doesn't sound that way now. He works on his knowledge to be the best coach he can be. This is the opinion I've started absorbing about Drew.
Calipari? I still can't see past all of his obnoxious, used car lot behavior. If he changed... I'd be happy to come on here and tout that, too, just like I'm doing for Drew!
Landen has a pro career ahead of him... for sure. Don't know about the NBA. though I'm sure he will try to make it onto the big stage.
Landen has great potential for playing abroad. His fundamentals are going to pay off big. I'm sure he can play in Europe and other places and do very well. Heck... he could make a lot of money coaching abroad, too.
Let's also not forget that Landen grew up abroad. He is used to living in other countries. That is huge when playing abroad. So many players go and just can't cut being in other cultures and away from home.
!SAMUT-PRAKAN-Boiler-explosion.jpg ↗
Ever see a boiler explode?
No?
Prepare to see one on Thursday in the Sprint Center.
I was impressed! But let's throw out that first game because they were no competition. From here on out, let's look at our tournament stats from MSU moving forward for a better understanding of where we are at in the tournament.
I never forget anything. No wait... I forgot. I do forget anything... and somethings... and everything.
He isn't the defender like Towns or Davis. But he may be the best of the 3 on offense.
I hope we don't have to resort to a zone. Won't be good news if we have to.
I'd like to see our guards defend well and cause a disruption and speed them up. That is our best option. Don't let them set in their offense. Keep a constant pressure on the ball. That is key. When their PG is holding the ball at the top of the key, put pressure on him. Don't let him slow down the tempo and set up Swanigan in the post.
Really... we just have to impose our game onto them instead of other way around. I do think it helps that we have a "home game" for this because it should help us control tempo.
Frank Martin's weight moves around so he tightens his belt when he is on the light side. Another thing.... Cubans often wear baggy clothes. It is cultural.
Speaking of Frank.... I thought he dealt with the politics well, too -
South Carolina's Frank Martin calls Confederate flag protest unfortunate ↗
I'm not a fan of the Confederate flag... but I respect everyone's right to free speech and it looks like Frank thinks the same way.
I constantly start threads that already exist. I need to dig through the pile a bit better before posting. My bad.
Their campus looks like the NATO complex in Belgium. Wow.
That's true... but we've never faced anyone near the skill level of Swanigan. And if Purdue can get out in front with Swanigan, they will go to him almost every play.
This will be a funny game. We are actually playing a "Self team!" The MSU version of a hi/lo.
We better take Swanigan serious... this is the way we used to play and Self has a trophy cabinet full of victories with this style!
If we can't stop any part of Swanigan, then we have to play a game focused on out-scoring them and just hope we get hot from trey.
I think we are a MUCH faster team than Purdue. Their speed is only relative to their conference, which is not a particularly fast conference.
We were able to speed up MSU yesterday and it worked like a charm, especially down the stretch.
And if Purdue wants to run 2 bigs... we need to make them pay.
It is important on how we think about this game. If we think, "their size is going to be a problem" then it will be.
But if we think, "we have to take advantage of our speed over their size" then we will win, probably by a large amount.
Also... if we scrap for rebounds like we did against MSU, we will be fine. We out-rebounded them by quite a bit and Landen had 11 boards.
Defensive rebounds should lead to more run outs.
Oh yeah... Duke.... and perhaps the reason they lost -
Duke lost to South Carolina because they were too easy to hate ↗
Works for me.
You just confirmed my suspicion. That IP spoof services have a very limited amount of IPs to draw from. Thanks.
This process is working fine for us and I'm not worried about the Gonzaga guy.
Duke plays basketball? I thought they were just a bunch of ambulance chasers!
This will come down to -
KU Back Court vs PURDUE Front Court
As we all know... back court play typically wins in March.
I don't think we have to run Doke in order to win. Unless.... we don't take control of the back court. If we let them play their speed... if we let them feed the post with ease... and if our perimeter defense plays mushy.... yes... we will lose!
This IS the classic game... Back Court vs Front Court! If your guards play disruptor and make it hard for Purdue to feed the post... and we get them sped up on our pace... and we run some open court offense when we can... I don't see how Purdue has a chance. They shouldn't have a chance. Their only chance is if we give it to them!
And our secret weapon should be our "3 Amigos" driving the ball right at Swanigan to collect his fouls! We put Swanigan in foul trouble and kiss this game over!
What a hilarious read! Thanks.
""The league isn't very tough," one ACC assistant said. "Too much finesse. You have to be tough to win in the NCAA tourney.""
