"I think a judge will get a good laugh outta it."

Back in my day I bounced at several bars for 7 or 8 years. We had to deal with this kind of stuff all the time.

As far as the threat from Josh to "kick her ass".... from my experience, judges basically treat someone who only verbally threatens someone outside a bar as a hero. It is obvious there is big time stuff going on when outside a bar, and to limit it to verbal yada-yada is a positive versus violence or other crimes. But my experiences with this dates back to the 80s. Times have changed...

@BeddieKU23

"This father/daughter are clearly nut jobs at this point. We’ve seen enough put out there to challenge the credibility of their mental thinking."

I can understand their desire to get her car fixed. Anything beyond that is pure opportunism. They see he is months away from a 7-figure paycheck and they want some.

I don't think what has happened so far will really damage Josh's future. At least, not for basketball contracts. I doubt it will even hurt his endorsement potential unless he continues to get in trouble. We forget he is just a kid still. He was new on this team and he was sticking up for his bros.

This all is very petty compared to other trouble players around the country have gotten in to.

@Crimsonorblue22

I saw that tape but never heard him say "chicken hawk." Does anyone have a copy where he clearly says it? I'd like to see it.

@Texas-Hawk-10

Okay.... I'm fine with your refined definition of Marshall's tactics.

Does the "disrespected chip on his shoulder" work at Indiana? Do the fans and players at Indiana feel disrespected?

I'm skeptical about most "chip" strategies at big schools. Heck... I've been screaming for years here at Kansas that we need a chip and can't get one. I feel certain that if we could use a chip, then Bill would figure out how to do it.

Indiana basketball players are not only Gods at their school, but throughout the state of Indiana. I don't see a way of turning them into feeling victimized.

I say that after years of trying to force a chip at Kansas. Years....

@JayHawkFanToo

Everyone in here knows I want to play WSU every year. Marshall has made them a force and they play a style that always gets us in trouble in March.

But the real reason I want to play is to start a real rivalry. KSU just isn't it.

I look at the UK/UL rivalry with envy. I know we may not be able to match that, but who says we have to? I think it does a lot for our program to have a real rivalry and that is a naturally forming rivalry. These schools just don't like each other, period!

Don't want to open a can of worms... but maybe I did anyways!

@Texas-Hawk-10

Of course I realize Indiana is a top program.

All I was saying is that Marshall has a lot to consider, including quality of life issues. He's a family man so he can't just run off only for his own ambition.

He is 10-times the coach of Shaka Smart..... but they both have a similar style of playing the underdog card... and making a career off of it.

I don't think Shaka's underdog style is ever going to work at Texas. The very last thing Longhorns wants to hear is that they are underdogs!

So why will the underdog card work at Indiana? Since when does that school see themselves as zeroes in the basketball world?

@BShark

I sure have a case of anxiety today. Can't stay seated in my office. Urghhhhh!!!!!

Can't we just play 6 games today and get this over with? The moving van is ready to take the trophy back to Lawrence RIGHT NOW!

This situation is pretty complicated because the claims by this woman and her dad are all over the place. They are talking about a violation of Title IX, right?

If that is the case, and if they take that path it is completely different than a civil case with Josh. And there is no reason to think they might not go after more than one path.

What is clear is they feel like "victims" regardless of what she did in this. And it is clear she participated in elevating this situation.

@Crimsonorblue22

Yeah... how can he play "underdog" at Indiana?

He has made his own bed, and now has to sleep in it.

@Crimsonorblue22

I only had one sibling... a sister. Between her and my mother I was raised to respect women. And I do. Neither of them would be throwing a drink in a man's face at a bar. And I'm sure there were other things involved here, too... bad language and pushing and threats.... all the way around.

At a certain point I lose respect. Doesn't mean I would hit or threaten her or kick her car. I wouldn't. But once I've lose respect then I'm neutral on my chivalry.

This girl may or may not have a case. But what is clear is her and her dad have no empathy for Kansas basketball fans and the program. They could have done all of this in a way to minimalize the damage to everyone not involved in their case but it is clear they don't care.

I could be wrong... but I know a guy who works for Marshall. I haven't heard any inside news about this situation but a month ago he told me Marshall was happy at WSU and didn't want to leave. He's a family man so there is a lot involved.

This type of information is usually top secret. Coaches like to keep some mystery in their intent, even if it is just a tiny bit, so they don't lose negotiation leverage. Plus... they never know what kind of offer comes their way in the future. So maybe they feel like they would never leave, and then the right deal comes a calling (See Roy Williams).

Josh Suspended For 1 Game • Mar 17, 2017 01:28 AM

@globaljaybird

I think you are right on.

In normal situations... I typically stick up for women. But when they go out and cause trouble, they are on their own, just like a guy would be if he did the same thing.

So this player is in a bar and throws a drink in Vick's face. Really? And he and his pals should just take that because she is a woman? No way.

Now she has a problem because she alleged she was threatened. So now she wants to be treated as if she is a lady when she instigated all of this by being trash. She can't have it both ways.

If the story was different.... a nice young lady just stepped out of church and is accosted by one of our players... threatened and her car damaged.... yeah... that would be a huge problem.

Another thing... How come all the play-in teams are not stuck playing #1 seeds if they win?

"Gotta Tighten Some Things Up" • Mar 15, 2017 11:32 PM

I just think Carlton needs to be more committed to staying focused the entire time he is on the court.

I think his biggest issue is focus. One sure sign is his inability to GRAB the ball! So many rebounds are right there in front of him and he can't grab the ball. The ball is like a greased pig. Players don't just have bad hands. His hands are fine. His ability to stay in deep focus is the problem.

We are a very different team from last year. The ball moves quicker and our offensive aggressiveness is shown in more complex ways. Drives coming from all over the place, etc. So Carlton had to raise his level of focus just to stay even on where he was last year.

It looks like he is slowly catching on to the pace and other factors. Just not sure he can accomplish much in as many as 6 games.

A huge help to his focus is adrenaline. When he came back from his last suspension, he had a monster game. That was adrenaline talking. The adrenaline not only helped his focus but also helped his motor.

So.... HOW do we get his adrenaline back up to that level for every game moving forward? Figure that one out and we will benefit bigly.

T-minus Two Days And Counting... • Mar 15, 2017 11:07 PM

!match2.jpg ↗

T-minus two days and counting...

Here we go. Another year of March Madness.

Like most years, we have plenty of weapons entering the tournament.

There is one weapon I'm not sure we have, and it is this weapon that will determine the 2017 National Champion.

That weapon is M O M E N T U M !

We will not be entering this tournament with a long winning streak behind us. In fact, our winning streak following us into the tournament is ZERO!

We ran into a buzz saw last year who had all the momentum in the world! That buzz saw went on to take the crown.

This year, can we be last year's Villanova? Will we enter games with the energy, optimism and momentum to proclaim that NO TEAM will defeat us in this tournament?! That is what Villanova did last year. You could see the fire in their eyes and you could see their desire played out on the court. We all knew they would become the National Champion after they beat us. It was obvious.

Friday should be the start of our next winning streak. We don't need 20 or 30 consecutive wins. We need 6. That's all. A measly 6 wins represent the pathway to our goal. Nothing more and nothing less.

I've always mentioned that carrying a "chip" was a great way to build momentum. It is. It helps build an insatiable appetite for wins. But I'm not sure if we are really carrying a chip into this tournament. What I do know is we have Frank Mason! He isn't really a chip. More like a rock. Uh... actually, more like a boulder. Maybe it is better to have a boulder over a chip. What do you think?

I don't think Frank cares what other's think. I don't think he worries a lick about getting his due recognition. I think Frank just wants to compete. And when he competes, he wants to win. Badly. And he knows every game now represents the possibility of being his last game as a Jayhawk. Those tears he fought back during senior night were not alligator tears. Frank appreciates the opportunity he was given at Kansas. No one can deny what they see and feel from Frank. Frank does NOT want to leave this tournament early. Frank does NOT want his last game as a Jayhawk to be a "L."

I'm pointing my attention towards Frank. But what about the rest of our team? Frank is the "symbol" for this team. Devonte is the "potential" for this team. Josh is the "spark" for this team, and Landen is the "senior leadership" for this team. The rest of our guys are the "support" for this team. We need ALL parts of this team in order to go on a 6-game run. We NEED everyone!

Rock Chalk!

@wrwlumpy

If NCCU is the toughest then I want to play them.

We need to be challenged from here on out. Good for the troops.

@HighEliteMajor

I've been one of your disciples for a long time.

I've never seen you commit this hard to fate. You have always been the firm pragmatist; writing novel-length posts to properly give your message it's due respect. You are the guy who doesn't shave corners. You have the hardheadedness necessary to be a successful head coach. That is why I've always referred to you as "Coach." I've always respected you because you are "all in" concerning your beliefs.

So what you post here has really given me an extra shot of optimism. All the printed words and stats simply push to "NO" for Kansas this year. This would usually give you enough material to support the "NO" prediction.

But you went for the "eye test" instead. You went for the "heart test" instead. You FEEL the presence of Frank Mason.... a guy we would all feel comfortable with us as our sidekick in any battle, from Iraq to the Final Four!

Let's go get this done!

"Gotta Tighten Some Things Up" • Mar 14, 2017 11:58 PM

The defensive spacing should be adjustable in a game. If we are playing a team with post dominance and no trey shooting then we need our guys to suck in more on weak side help. If a team is killing us from trey then we should be playing further out to make sure we can close.

In a game, we should be able to tweak our defense. When a team gets hot we need to be able to adjust and make it harder for them and force them into different patterns.

What is "good defense?" 3 words..... Disrupting the flow.

Ball Family • Mar 14, 2017 10:30 PM

Yep.... Daddy Ball... the promoter of his own urban legend.

I wonder if he is the guy who could dunk the ball with his feet? Have you all heard that one? That story went around back in the days of Dr. J. Dr. J really put a focus on the dunk and players going sky high. We didn't have the internet and youtube... so I think it was easy for bs stories to spread.

I actually wasted time thinking about this and how it could be done. The closest guess I had was to do the flips like floor gymnasts do and somehow push up with your hands on the last flip while catching the ball with your feet and dropping it through.

Okay..... I had quite an imagination back then.... I'm sure Daddy Ball could straighten me out on how he did it!

"Gotta Tighten Some Things Up" • Mar 14, 2017 10:14 PM

This team can improve in leaps and bounds without even physically practicing.

What this team needs is a substantial period in the video suite.

Our guys hustle. We will not improve just telling them to hustle more.

Our biggest issue on defense is NOT the individual effort on the ball; on ball or on ball screens. Yes, we could use more zing here but that will automatically come when we can start taking some pride in our defense again!

Our biggest issues on defense are mechanical issues. Mostly... spacing and hedging. I've sort of given up hope of ever seeing a Self team understand hedging. But floor spacing is another issue.

Look at where we screw up most on defense; the trey ball.

The issue is spacing, mostly with our weak side help. Go back to really any Big 12 game on your DVR and watch again, paying close attention to weak side spacing on d. Our guys make the classic mistake here. When the ball moves to the other side and our guard defenders give weak side help they end up in "no man's land." What has happened.... they end up in a place on the court where they are of NO assistance whatsoever. They aren't in the paint enough to really help out there, and they are 15 ft away from their man poised on the trey line so not close enough to properly close out on the trey shot.

This one fact has bothered me all year with this team.

There is no way of playing good defense unless it is done as team defense. Every player needs to understand the role of every other player, too.

This is particularly important when it comes to spacing on defense. Yes.... we play a M2M defense. But... in reality this defense is a hybrid of M2M and zone. On ball defense is M2M and every man is responsible for his man, another rule of M2M. But the help defense, the weak side defense, is more like a zone, playing in between offensive players to help guard someone else while remaining responsible for a single man as required in a M2M. This is where it gets tricky.... this is where we have taken a truly stud lineup with guarding capabilities and turned them into a very average defending team.

Our guards are not properly positioned on their weak side help. One big problem is we have over-compensated for our post because we don't have a true shot blocker and we have depth as an issue in the post.

But in reality, the only big help our guards give our post player is the appearance of the lane being too busy so teams are less likely to feed the post or drive the lane.

They either need to play their man on the trey line closer, or the guards on the other side on the ball need to turn up the intensity to make it harder for them to pass cross court. The added pressure makes it tougher for them to throw a rifle pass to the other side for an open trey, and when they do pass they are more likely to throw the ball a bit off-target, throwing the shooter's rhythm off and making him take longer to finish his shot because the pass to him was off.

Playing good defense is like choreographing your defense as a dance team.

This is where you need old game footage in order to better tweak your defense.

Our defense can be helped immensely just by viewing tape and setting players up with better positioning and making sure to go over how aggressive they need to play.

This team should have 3-times more steals every game. Our defense has been completely under-performing except in the final couple of minutes.

If we get our guys spaced properly and knowing their roles on how intense to play and how they need to play it.... not only will you see a huge jump in the effectiveness of our defense, you will also notice our guys have turned up the hustle considerably because that extra 2% effort is what makes you a national championship or not. That last 2% is the hardest hustle to obtain because it really needs to happen through emotional inspiration.... which comes from seeing the optimism of good execution, all of this drives momentum.

I've never questioned this team's desire to win. It's written all over their faces. Frank and his team has but one goal now.... bring home the hardware!

TREMONT WATERS BACK IN PLAY • Mar 13, 2017 07:05 PM

Hey folks...

We NEED a PG!

Yes... it is looking like we will have a lot of guards next year. HOORAY!

Bill is turning the corner on his past ideology. He's okay with a 4out-1in. Great!

If we are going to start becoming a guard intensive team, then we need to recruit more guards than we did in the past.

BTW: This is more about terminology anyways.

Examine the 3 spot. Historically, that spot has always been for the "small forward" or "shooting forward."

Then... we started calling the 3 a "swing guard".

Now, we just call that spot a "guard."

Look at how basketball has changed. In the good ol' days, we'd be looking at 3 potential post players, from 3 to 5.

Now.... everyone looks at the 3 as a perimeter player. And many teams, including ours, is seeing the positive of having the 4-spot be out on the perimeter.

TREMONT WATERS BACK IN PLAY • Mar 13, 2017 06:52 PM

I see it like this:

Devonte = PG - 2

Malik = 2 - 3

Vick = 2 - 3

Svi = 3 - 4

Cunliffe = 2 - 3

Garrett = 2 - 4

I still think we have room for a PG coming in and getting some big minutes his freshman year.

"I agree KU could be the only team that survives the 1st weekend."

In other words.... business as usual for the Big 12!

Remember back just a few months ago in Big 12 play... this was going to be WVU's year. Or... this was going to be Baylor's year. I heard all that nonsense and laughed! This turned out to be one of our easier years for winning the Big 12.

I believe this will be another year where the Big 12 under-performs in March. (except for Kansas)

OU, last year, was the anomaly.

TREMONT WATERS BACK IN PLAY • Mar 13, 2017 06:02 PM

@BeddieKU23

Is that the issue?

We are losing our PG. Frank.

We know Devonte can scoot over and we can have a more traditional shooting guard fill his spot.

Or...

We just keep everything the same and maintain 2 PGs on the floor at all times.

I'm thinking having Devonte come back would be a plus for signing Tremont.

TREMONT WATERS BACK IN PLAY • Mar 13, 2017 04:06 PM

It makes ZERO sense for Tremont to go anywhere but Kansas. Biggest reason? Hudy. Tremont is a driving guard and he is going to need to build his body to use that drive to take him to a paycheck someday.

TREMONT WATERS BACK IN PLAY • Mar 13, 2017 03:17 PM

@BeddieKU23

The problem is there are several big schools after Tremont now.

Guess it matters how it went on his visit.

Yes, he could feel slighted because we were going after bigger fish. But he will find the exact same situation at all the blue bloods.

And we have the perfect example of what can happen for him.... Frank was not a premiere PG when he came to Kansas, but he will leave Kansas (most-likely) as NPOY! Frank was able to put all of that stuff behind him when he came to Kansas.

I think most of the best players have a sense of reality within. Definitely not all. But it is a good part of their personality test to know if they can use their mind in realistic directions. This situation is a good test.

Tremont has a very similar situation coming here that Frank had. Signing late because coming out of a previous commitment. There is an opening at PG. And he could come right in and possibly start for 4 years! We may bring in another PG after his first year and then we run another 2-PG lineup. Having Devonte certainly hasn't hurt Frank's numbers or status!

Actually, this is a beautiful formula moving forward! We know how to play 2 PGs better than any team in America!
