This discussion (nationally) seems to be more emotional and political than logical.

So what’s that b-ball scholarship worth? - roughly 20k+ per year in tuition, books, room and board. - 5k+ in stipends - free apparel - free marketing of the player as well. What does the money generated go to? Not the b-ball players, but the minor sports - tennis, baseball, lacrosse, soccer, anything women’s sports. Every one of these loses money and is supported by football and basketball, not to mention the money losing women’s programs have to exist due to title 9 stuff; you can’t cut them. You’ve got to have 50+ women’s scholarships (and programs and associated expenses) to balance out the football scholarships.

Letting kids earn from their likeness will not increase school debt, but will be an oversight nightmare. It will widen the gap between the haves and the have nots. (I’m kinda ok with this unfair advantage, KU is in the have group). It’ll also make the disparity between men’s and women’s sports even more apparent.

I don’t watch much sports avidly anymore, but quiz me on 90s baseball players and I’m ok. I don’t watch much NBA, but of the nearly 500 nba players I could recognize around 40 guys. Of the 4500 ncaa basketball players I’d be lucky to recognize 5 non-KU players. NFL guys are kinda screwed playing behind a helmet. Names sure, faces no way. Same for ncaa football. I’d recognize one guy this season (so far) - no KU players.

That’s another thing about ncaa basketball. The coaches are the most recognizable and stable things. Therefore the most marketable. I don’t think this creates much legit income (I may be wrong) but I do think it creates an oversight nightmare. It’s already pretty easy to pay recruits (unless you’re a dumbass adidas guy) this will be the Wild West. I’m kinda excited, KU is one of the big boys, it’s the little guys that will be absolutely screwed. I mean the competitive imbalance will be ridiculous. 14 in a row will be a short streak under those rules. Bring it!

@bskeet I think they are totally interchangeable. They have to be. Every 5 years it’s total turnover. Every year has a new 1 recruit. Every year has 40-50 guys getting drafted. Every year a kid gets hyped up. Every 5-10 years you get a Zion/Wiggins/LeBron level of hype. Every year KU has a nearly full roster after losing guys.

Out of curiosity would you (anyone) buy a product that a player is hocking out of a KU uniform? I assume they can’t show a Jayhawk in the advertisement, so how recognizable are they outside of the local market? Other than Jayhawks, I’d recognize the QB from Clemson out of uniform, but not many other kids. Am I the minority?

Miles needs to get some of his guys in the system. Nearly every position needs an upgrade. Patience my friend. Any progress this year is just from coaching. Recruiting is getting better too, but that takes time to get the pipeline full again.

Well... Kstaters are generally conservative, you’re more likely to run into a communist in Lawrence. But for goat ropers and chicken bangers Manhattan is happening.

The sooner there is a resolution, even a poor one, the sooner things get back to normal. As long as the ncaa is investigating forget about getting anything consistent in recruiting.

Didn’t Ollie get a show cause penalty and is banned for 3+ years? This could be the end for Self. This could also be just the end of recruiting for a couple years while KU fights the charges. No recourse if you win either, those recruits aren’t coming back.

Hell, I’ve heard of a guy hiding a drive by gun for a juco running back who later played at Nebraska. It’s not just money they’re given, they can damn near get away with murder.

There are a bunch of questions about how players are going to mesh and develop/stay healthy. I like this team way better than last years squad, but my expectations are tempered and my childlike love for the game has been squashed by the fbi crap.

I had amazon prime and internet and Netflix when I had cable. Got rid of cable a few years ago and I’m $120 a month ahead. It doesn’t matter what you have you’ve got to get ESPN+ now to watch 1/4 of the KU b-ball games. Heady play by ESPN. I’m bummed my free scrip ran out last month, but I haven’t used it to watch a show since KU basketball ended, it’s the articles on ESPN’s web site I’m irked I can’t read.

Rumor is an NFC and an AFC team reached out to the Jags about Ramsey. The NFC team (not sure who) offered a 1st and a 5th round pick. The AFC team (I believe to be the Chiefs Shelborn would be a terrible poker player) offered a first round pick and a player. The offers were declined and countered with two first round picks. I wonder if someone will step up and pay the price or if the Chiefs can continue to bolster their secondary? Can they make the money work with Mahomes due for a pay raise soon or would be be a rental?

Here’s how it appears to me. I always thought Roy put too much emphasis on one player hinging his whole class on him. As soon as he went to UNC where a system to buy players was in place his recruiting drastically improved. I sigh think Roy has any direct involvement in paying players. As soon as Bill showed up in Lawrence recruiting became amazing, some of that was a void at Kentucky, some was players getting paid. Now recruiting looks a lot more like it did under Roy when players weren’t getting paid.

Hopefully I’m wrong and there’s just a black cloud (fbi) hanging over the program for a brief moment.

FWIW If the xfl gains traction, they are talking about drafting HS players.

Outside of Zion, whom I also wouldn’t have seen much of if not for Duke, I can’t think of a single marketable athlete at the collegiate level when removed from his university and the exposure it creates. The D league and Euro ball both offer players an opportunity to get paid, but they’re not very good at creating the exposure and marketing opportunities that the ncaa creates for the most elite athletes. The ncaa actually helps create ready made and marketable stars from day one of their pro career, which generates a ton of wealth without having to actually perform at the highest level yet.

Alright everyone start saving up! When this passes we need to get an official top 10 HS recruit spokesman for KUbuckets. Of course he’ll have to play at KU to make it official (get paid).

OADs leading championship teams- not many - Carmelo Anthony (aargh) comes to mind, so does Anthony Davis (son of a... those two did us dirty!). Hmm. I don’t think OADs are holding a well constructed team back, although I think they should be sprinkled in, not the main component of the team.

Just final fours - I’m willing to bet every Kentucky team to make a final four under Calipari had a OAD on it. 2015 Duke Jabari Parker. 2014 Kentucky - Archie Goodwin, Nerlens Noel. 2012 Kansas - Ben McLemore; Kentucky - Teague MICHAEL-kid-gilkrist and Davis. 2011 Kentucky Enes Kanter.

More than I thought. I’m out of time, there’s probably more final four appearances by OADs I skipped over.

I can’t wait to see the first Duke player Viagra commercial. Or the Missouri players CBD add. Or the Colorado studs marijuana advertisement. Tripper Allen’s jump rope commercial would be awesome!

Last I checked it wasn’t illegal in any state to sell your image, just against ncaa rules. So what changes with the California ruling? Just more pressure on the ncaa to allow players to make money?
