PURDUE BOILERMAKERS - THURSDAY - 8:39 P.M. - CBS β€’ Mar 23, 2017 03:37 PM

@Blown It is all about TV

Thank goodness, or we would not have nearly as much viewing to complain about! Remember the good old days of regional coverage on CBS in the damned tournament?

BOILERMAKER BUCKETS β€’ Mar 23, 2017 03:26 PM

Here is my favorite quote:

"I don’t think Graham can play any defense."

@jaybate-1.0 Thank you the other day for pointing out how you are always joking because it makes your themes so much more fun!

@BigBad @AsadZ

Don't despair! See the stats I posted on the other thread ("Oh welp"). Remarkably similar between the two teams despite the contrast in team makeup.

@jaybate-1.0 said:

when we were down against Memphis in 2008

We would have won the game in regulation easily if Self hadn't been holding the seniors & Chalmers/Rush back to preserve their legs for the barnstorming tour and NBA tryouts.

OK, Welp β€’ Mar 23, 2017 03:02 PM

@jayballer54 85-69.

Here is an interesting statistic. If it is true, I still find it inconceivable, but this is from the Purdue basketball official site. Look at Purdue's total blocks this year (sorry if you have to squint), compared to their opponents'.

!Screenshot_2017-03-23-10-35-48.png β†—

Now compare ours:

!Screenshot_2017-03-23-10-34-43.png β†—

We have almost twice as many blocks? I am not sure length equals rim intimidation, folks! And we are defending opps' FGs at the same % rate as the big bad team.

Touchy Situation/ Thoughts β€’ Mar 23, 2017 02:50 PM

@dylans Good pickup. Here is the answer, because they have never advanced two rounds. The early 70's were before the tournament expanded, so never to the sweet 16 since then.

In 1971, they started in the sweet 16, and lost, then lost the regional consolation game, too. In each of the next 2 years, they won in the first round (round of 25), lost in the second round (sweet 16), and then won the 3rd place regional consolation games.

!Screenshot_2017-03-23-10-45-00.png β†—

Those consolation games sucked for everyone, guaranteeing some team two losses to end their year (as well as distorting overall NCAA stats). They got rid of the regional ones in the mid-70s, I think, but they kept them until the early 80s for the F4. (If you recall, Walton didn't want to play in the nat'l consolation game against KU but came off the bench to help stomp us in 1974.)

Touchy Situation/ Thoughts β€’ Mar 23, 2017 02:06 PM

@dylans Major correction: first Sweet 16 EVER!

The fans are crazy nuts about bb this year. Of course, fb is in the crapper lately.

With Coastal Carolina winning baseball, and Clemson winning football, there is a chance for men's and women's bb to give this state 4 for 4 in one calendar year.

I am not sure why this is such a sticking point. You have to win six games, not one game, to win a ring. It does not do any good to try to just win one game, If the way you win means you can't win the next game. It's not much more complicated than that.

You can't win the next game unless you get there. Your strategy will be fine for blowouts, but I don't see any coach ever saying he is willing to risk this game so he wants his players to hold back in close games. If they slow down, it is solely to preserve energy to make it through this game.

Baseball managers in extra inning games have been known to hold back ace relievers for a later inning, only to lose in an earlier one, but that is only due to the nature of the no-reinsertions format, and sudden death if the home team scores. Basketball is a timed game, and free substitutions allow coaches to prepare for late game necessities. No coach is going to hold back his best player in a tie game hoping he will be fresher for the next round.

Then again, I bought my own beer in college, but never bought any for pool players.

like why the hell would you ask for such information it’s MARCH

Ironically, before this year that was the attitude here in South Carolina every March regarding Men's Basketball!!!

I remember posting a few years back in some forum about my frustration with the local paper here that the NCAA regionals would get relegated to inside pages while NFL combine discussions of future 8th round offensive linemen got front page news. Then Dawn Staley changed the culture for the Women's program, and Frank has done so now for the Men's.

Anybody see this? β€’ Mar 23, 2017 12:12 PM

@kjayhawks I saw all types of articles about the alleged rape and the pending charges against the Creighton guy. The guy wasn't playing because of injury, and was booted, wasn't he, so there was no ongoing story.

The problem for JJ was due to how the allegations dribbled out over time which lent credence to suspicions that there was a cover up because he is a huge star. No suspension when it happened helped with looking that way. Too much occurred behind the scenes, which I believe was the thrust of a lengthy @HighEliteMajor post early on about the need for the prophylactic effects of decisive public action early on. I disagreed with HEM then as advocating punishment while charges are pending (which could hurt his court defense), but seeing how it has kept going, I think he may have been right on point.

In today's era where people click quickly to the next baiting headline, journalism looks like it has descended into no-room-for-lengthy-analysis articles repeating the general scandal but seldom explanatory information. I blame both the readers, for not looking for more, and editors, for being willing to stop trying to get readers to look.

Bob lutz Wichita eagle question. β€’ Mar 23, 2017 11:49 AM

It was the type of question suitable only for a private conversation between close friends because the purpose was "Wow, isn't it amazing how things work out!", but NOT appropriate in a public forum because it's reference to the class ends up looking like an attempt to embarrass Frank.

I can be aware that I was unexpectedly able to attend a more expensive law school because of life insurance, and I can focus on that silver lining in conversations with friends, but I would not appreciate someone hollering, "Hey, aren't you glad your dad died your senior year?"

He should have just asked, "Aren't you glad Frank didn't go to Towson?"

Sweet 16 Schedule β€’ Mar 21, 2017 05:00 PM

@JayHawkFanToo Please let me apologize. I misunderstood. I honestly thought Norlander has a right to have his own opinion about Gonzaga, and I did not realize that it is wrong for him to think of Gonzaga now as the #1 seed.

Sweet 16 Schedule β€’ Mar 21, 2017 04:22 PM

@justanotherfan I like blaming Louisville, and for last year, too!

Sweet 16 Schedule β€’ Mar 21, 2017 04:20 PM

@StLJhawk Much as I don't like Allen, he does have one more NCAA championship than our guys do, so to avoid jinxes I am not casting any "Ha Ha's" at him yet.

If we are hung over from celebrating two weeks from now, I will come back and retract my post, and proceed to unleash a big Bronx cheer at him!

Sweet 16 Schedule β€’ Mar 21, 2017 04:11 PM

@ParisHawk You mean, still not DST? Still oh-dark o'clock! But no doubt there are hundreds of bistros and cafes showing American bb in the middle of the night!

Sweet 16 Schedule β€’ Mar 21, 2017 04:07 PM

@JayHawkFanToo I am not sure why you care so much what one guy at CBS wrote. He specifically said he was not basing it at all on the original NCAA seeding and was weighing the regular season into it. It is an arguably defensible position. Your position is also an arguably defensible position. People can differ on these things.

Sweet 16 Schedule β€’ Mar 21, 2017 12:40 PM

@JayHawkFanToo The writer, Norlander, has picked KU in his bracket to win the title. Seedings are based on records, metrics, etc and there is no doubt Ganzaga has a strong claim. No heartburn here, or need to feel dissed as (horrors!) his #2 seed.

FYI, your link is actually to a Shiver slideshow of the CBS article. The CBS link on the 1st one, SC, has it all on one page and is easier to read.

Missed the WSU Loss to UK... β€’ Mar 21, 2017 01:02 AM

@JayHawkFanToo I didn't think the loud cheering in the KY radio guy's video was anything but amusing. But if, as he said, she used the NCAA to threaten revoking his credentials to force him to take it down, that opens her up to very deserved negative publicity.

You know, that is just the way. Men pay attention to personality, charm and sense of humor. Women are constantly judging men by how they look. Making men into objects, like we are all supposed to be nothing more than eye candy....Sheeeeeez!

VOTE: Frank Mason! β€’ Mar 20, 2017 05:00 PM

@ParisHawk That dilutes Frank's, too. Best way is just vote for him.

@wissox He said something directly to the guy, too.

Did he get a turnover for the shot clock violation? B Greene would've been all over that!

@HighEliteMajor Sports? Or were your cheekbones just randomly going around attacking elbows?

Had my cheek attack a fist in a swimming pool, and my temple once attacked a tennis ball that was served 90Β° sideways from a guy on the next court.

It is a dangerous world when facial parts are on the loose!

Thanks. Maybe it's working where I do, but I tire of that word and so many similar words.

The use in this case is non-gender specific. More of a way of saying, "Hey (insert any insulting label)! You underestimated me and here I am!" Perfect for Frank, me thinks. But, if the word causes cringing, you might want to avoid the movie "Pitch Perfect" with Anna Kendrick...

@wissox said:

Where does BIFM come from? I've assumed it's the B word. Not sure why we'd want to call him that.

This has come up a few times. BIFM stands for "B-- I'm Frank Mason" and was a rap song written in tribute to him (last year, I think, but could have been years ago) by someone I admit I have never heard of.

Sunday schedule β€’ Mar 19, 2017 06:57 PM

@wissox Internet issue, because our written words don't convey verbal clues like emphasis, or physical clues like smiles or rolling eyes.

A judge talked about how hard it is to read a transcript and know what a witness meant. He said the statement,

"I never said she bought two guns"

is capable of literally 7 different meanings depending on which word is stressed.

Try it!

Sunday schedule β€’ Mar 19, 2017 06:49 PM

@wissox I think he might have thought you wrote it during the game as a statement of particular dislike of Michigan as opposed to last in time. "WSU is the last school I would go to."

@mayjay @wrwlumpy When I saw that picture I thought what an awful thing to do to such a beautiful building. It reminds me of the Louvre with that awful glass pyramid thing in front of it, or what they did to Soldier Field in Chicago.

They actually started the underground addition the summer before I got there, and finshed it right after I graduated. We were the only class that never saw the Law Quad without big piles of construction crap. I haven't been back. Law school is not the fondest time residing in my memories.

One funny thing: In our third week, they started the deep excavation from the street below our dormer all the way to under the main building. Due to worries about sending heavy filled trucks on Ann Arbor's streets when frozen in winter, they piled the dirt about 25 to 30 feet high right outside our door inside the Quad. After a heavy snow that winter, one of my friends got all his ski equipment and made a few runs down Mt Quad. Then they fenced it off.

As to the aesthetics, it is far better than the aluminum sided monstrosity you can see on the left side jutting out perpendicularly to the main library building. They did that in the 60s, I believe, and made it that way because they couldn't afford to match that much stone to the original. The library was way too small and the underground addition was the only alternative to closing off about 50% of open space for a new building. No one wanted that corner closed in.

The Law School was built in the 30s, and was funded by a Brit who graduated from there in the teens or 20's and practiced in England. Although he chose all the designs, including dozens of gargoyles on the towers and hand-carved plaster ceilings, he never returned to see it. He was afraid it would never match his imagination.

One fact about UM Law that is little known is that it served for years as the best library of Japanese legal materials going back a century. Before WWII, UM had a strong relationship with Japanese legal scholars, and during the war, much of the country's legal resources were destroyed in the bombing. When I attended, there were always about 20 to 30 Japanese grad students there getting advanced degrees in Japanese law because UM had the best program in the world. There was still an ongoing effort to copy the materials to send to Japanese schools. With digitization, it is probably a lot easier and no doubt complete.

I just saw this. Thanks for putting a picture of the University of Michigan Law School in your Michigan State roundup!

Annotated version: the dormer on the right is where I lived first year, the tall building at the top is where I once served a summons on a very bad man, and the glass panels at the bottom are the skylights they use to brighten a three floor underground addition to the law library because it needed expansion and doing it in the original architecture would have cost tens of millions.

Hey, Bill Raftery coached there!

And PJ Carlissimo before he became more famous for being choked by Sprewell:

"NBA Commissioner David Stern suspended Sprewell for 82 games before an arbitrator reduced the sentence to 68 games, costing Sprewell $6.4 million and his shoe deal with Converse.

"Sprewell deemed the punishment too harsh. 'I wasn't choking P.J. that hard,' Sprewell told 60 Minutes. 'I mean, he could breathe.'"

(From ESPN Classic article)

Now that is a decisive punishment!
