@ralster Chris Collins is heir apparent at Duke, I think.

@truehawk93 And now they get to try to get someone again. Their salary stand isn't proving very successful.

@Texas-Hawk-10 The lack of a good AD relationship may have kept him from trying to get a comparable salary to stay, but the money lured him away.

@JayHawkFanToo Illinois fans are still mad at Bill for leaving after only two years. They have been attacking him as hypocritical.

They conveniently ignore the fact that he left them loaded, letting Squeaky get credit for the championship game year.

I think he quit when he found out that Forte actually does have to leave sometime.

@dylans That just came up as two squares with diagonals? Looks like Division or Battalion markers on a military battlefield map.

Day 2 Tournament Thread • Mar 18, 2017 02:34 PM

@dylans I don't see the problem there. Many people thought WSU was likely underseeded, so of course that punishes the team they play, too. Should have been a weekend matchup.

I guess Marshall never feels comfortable. He’s like those little dogs that constantly pant and fidget around. He carries such a personal chip all the time, it must be hard to have normal moments with him.

Remember when he took the College of Charleston job for 24 hours, then decided he would stay at Winthrop? Like Cremins, who did that to the Gamecocks.

@Texas-Hawk-10 Interesting that she was so upset about a new girl friend of a guy who allegedly hit and kicked her the year before.

This explains a big mystery. I think the reason nothing came out of it except for a "likely he did it" finding is she probably refused to testify in the University proelceeding. Assuming he said nothing, they must have based the finding on a written complaint. With no rebuttal or additional info, they can make that finding but could not go much further than the probation recommendation. Daddy was probably upset at the outcome knowing something happened but unable to do anything if she wouldn't go forward or to police.

And South Carolina gets their 1st tournament win since I was a HS junior in 1973. Bill Walton's junior year in college and the second of his championships at UCLA. Nixon was fighting Watergate investigations, but would last over 16 months.

The Royals were considering a young 3rd baseman to replace Paul Schaal, but sent him to the minors until August that year, when he was brought up. He only batted .125, though, so none of us knew we were awaiting the beginning of George Brett's Hall of Fame career.

A long freakin' time since SC won a game, which was back when they were still an independent after leaving the ACC -- but they were coached by Frank even back then, McGuire, that is.

@drgnslayr Ya if we start arrest folks for saying they'll kick someones a$$, we need much much more prisons.

When it is accompanied by kicking the hell out of the person's car, while that person is in it, the courts might take it a lot more seriously.

Communication of a conditional threat like this (if one occurred, which is only alleged by one of 3 witnesses) is always treated more seriously if it occurs under conditions where it is more likely to occur.

For example, if I say to my brother who is 1050 miles away, "Say that to my face and I will beat your face in," no one will consider it likely to occur. But if I say in his presence, "If you stand up, I will beat your face in," then that is likely treated as a more likely, i.e., more serious, threat, and would be more deserving of possible charges.

An interesting aspect to the alleged Josh threat is that if it occurred, Calvert's friends either did not hear it (not in their statements) or did not think of it as a statement of actual intent to harm, since by all accounts they tried to physically stop Josh from attacking the car. If I heard and saw someone his size in full rage mode promising to hurt someone who was in a position of relative safety, I would think twice about confronting him lest the anger get turned on me.

Just like the amount of damages, I think the police did not believe that statement could be proven in court. Otherwise, I cannot imagine why they did not charge him with an additional count, which in many places would be communication of a threat or in some, terroristic threats. (Not the international type -- this is the type that means intentionally scaring the hell out of somebody.)

From Haskin at the Topeka CJ:

"Moneke, their leader with 20 points and nine rebounds, made a point to seek out Self in the tunnel after the game and offer encouragement.

“Go win a title, coach,’’ Moneke said.

@Hawk69 I think we in SC just haven't prohibited local school districts or town from deciding for themselves how they want to address the issue. Not yet, at least--some are trying, though.

Meanwhile, in news of much less importance to our legislators, SC schools are now ranked 50th out of 50. Lead editorial cartoon today shows SC taking down the (joking) State Seal that reads "Thank God for Mississippi".

@JayHawkFanToo Why wouldn't it? It is a statute addressing the treatment of men and women at universities. If the university takes action based on events outside campus, it is the action taken that is in the purview of the law.

Relationships between students arising from their status as students have a direct effect on their ability to succeed in school. That is why Title IX gets into those things--in the extreme examples giving rise to this concern, abusive behavior off-campus can prevent someone from attending. Schools have an interest in keeping their students safe, and for too long schools ignored reports of gender violence. Witness Baylor.

This is just an off the cuff answer. I do not guarantee 100% accuracy! Do not quote me!

@HighEliteMajor Yours didn't, hers did. As evidenced by his name in it. Duh.

Agreed, if only to get el chicken to STHU!

@HighEliteMajor I think you might have seen the "peanut gallery's" comment out of context. @jaybate-1.0 had written "Marshall would be insane to go to an adidas program...." and I think the comment was more along the lines of evidence from that exhibition game in support of jaybate's conjecture.

In any event, I actually agree with you that the criticism of other coaches here can get over the top. Then again, I have thought the same about your posts in years past about our own coach.

Tell me, which is worse, "Marshall is insane" or "Bill Self is an idiot"? Or denigrating another poster here with the "peanut gallery" insult? You have gotten offended many times by references such as that directed at you.

I think there is a pot seeking to meet a kettle to discuss shades of black.

Someday, I want to be in Las Vegas for this 4 day spread. It is supposed to be a blast as thousands of casual and pro gamblers descend on Sports Books in various casinos to bet on and watch 48 games in 92 hours. Like a Sunday NFL sports bar on steroids! Supposed to be really entertaining as the days progress and the drinking to lament, or celebrate, gets serious.

@JayHawkFanToo Recruits are easily fooled. Look at Baylor. Talent, no coaching.

Cuonzo Martin • Mar 16, 2017 03:53 AM

@BShark I dunno if it was too dumb. 5 years probably would be important to potential recruits seeing how much turnover they have had.

Romar • Mar 16, 2017 03:42 AM

@truehawk93 @JayHawkFanToo All good points. Just to add, Ed Manning went to the San Antonio Spurs with Brown for 2 years as an assistant, and continued with them as a scout. So there was more to what he brought than just his kid. Many of these hires over the years were shown the door when the son left.

@jayballer54 It isn't a matter of anyone simply wanting to point out flaws. If you don't care about spelling or grammar, just be aware that it can change the meaning and confuse people. Not their fault if that happens, so why get so angry about it? Correct the misunderstanding graciously and move on. People are trying to interact with you, but as you see, some are losing their patience.

The roster says he is from Canberra, Australia but in the interview he talked about his home in Nigeria...

His parents are diplomats. Interesting story. From the Sydney, Australia paper yesterday:

"The 21-year-old's full name is Nwachukwu Ikeukwumere Chima Moneke, but he goes by 'Chima' because it's easier to pronounce.

"The youngest of six boys has lived on five continents moving between Nigeria, Turkey, Switzerland, Australia and America.

"He's also spent time in France and England, but Moneke says Canberra will always be home.

"Moneke moved to Australia when he was two and grew up kicking soccer balls until he was encouraged by friends to try basketball at 13.

"He was skinny, small and raw, but would eventually star for Lake Ginninderra College alongside Utah Jazz guard Dante Exum.

"But Exum scored an NBA contract as the fifth pick in the 2014 draft, signing a deal with the Jazz to kickstart his career.

"In contrast, Moneke emailed "at least 300" US schools and almost gave up hope before a recruiter from Northeast Community College in Norfolk, Nebraska, came knocking with a scholarship opportunity.

"After two seasons he moved to UC Davis, where in the last week he has hit an overtime game-winner against CSU Fullerton and stunned UC Irvine in the conference final."

KU Buckets Bracket Challenge! • Mar 16, 2017 12:33 AM

@drgnslayr @approxinfinity

They changed the rule awhile back to require the last 4 at-large teams to go to the play-in round. Everyone thought that it was unfair when 8 autobid teams had to go through Dayton after having earned their presence in the tournament. The seeding still represents the perceived strength of the at-large teams over the auto bid teams.

I like the idea of dropping at-large teams to #16, but doesn't that punish the #1 seeds?

Has anyone picked KU to win it? • Mar 15, 2017 11:54 PM

Here is a list ↗ of the predictions by ESPN analysts...

Breakdown is interesting. Out of 25 voting:

AZ is selected 15 times for FF, to win 3

Duke FF 13, to win 4

Villanova FF 12, to win 4

UCLA FF 12, to win 1

KU FF 10, to win 3

UNC FF 9, to win 4

Louisville FF 9, to win 0

Gonzaga FF 7, to win 4

UK FF 3, to win 1

Oregon FF 3, to win 0

IState FF 2, to win 0

WVa, Mich, FSU, ND, and Wichita State all selected 1 time each for FF, but only Michigan got a prediction to win.

So, only 16 teams seen by these people who have been following the season are seen as getting to the Final Four, and only 9 as champs. No team garnered more than 4 votes out of 25 for champion, and there were 4 of those, two others getting 3, and 3 getting 1.

Florida, Baylor, Butler, and Purdue all top 4 seeds not seen as getting to the FF by anyone.

Wide open tourney, BIFM comin' through!

I vividly remember everything except the situation being critical, which made me somewhat underestimate, not Cole’s contribution, but the importance of it.

The thing to remember is that Kaun had saved us in the regional final against Davidson. For us to lose our 7 footer barely a fourth of the way through the first half, most people were sure that Tyler H would run amok.

I guess the romanticizing (and that original post yesterday from someone hoping Dwight can give us deja vu) come from just the surprise of the contribution when at best we probably expected him to take up some space and get a couple of boards without fouling too much. If we had won in 2003, we would remember Graves the same way. Now, his 16 pts/16 rebs are a footnote to our crappy FT performance vs Syracuse.

Schedule • Mar 14, 2017 03:35 PM

@ParisHawk I think that is a good guess on the TNT, because I suspect they will want the same announcers. But I never really trust them to be consistent.
