@HawkInMizery That article was perfectly balanced. He reported specifically about the dropped charges against Bragg as why no one should assume guilt, cautioned against equating the university investigation with a criminal case, and simply discussed the context of why this period has been hard. I was impressed by the balance shown, as I usually am by the Star. Vahe also printed Self's entire statement, and gave a great description of how he said it, far more than ESPN has when they just quote a phrase out of context, like the "distraction" thing before UK.

A lot of people on the Board were angry about the allegations about Vick and were willing to engage in huge hyperbole about KU's program being out of control. People were bringing up every incident since Self got here. It is only reasonable to expect the major local paper to have an interest about several things happening at once when a major crime is still unresolved. And he is right that unanswered questions leave room for suspicion and the fact that this is unfortunate. In a University privacy case, all our guys' hands are tied.

@brooksmd I have heard that the poker games Carson used to host in Hollywood for the comedians did not have such pure language!

@brooksmd What Drew inexplicably had no clue about was how to get his guys to drive inside in the 2nd half to foul LL out. No passing to high post. Mottley can drive, why not feed him? Baylor fans must be frustrated. So must Mottley.

Oh, sorry!

I wonder if Chip Gaines' appearance will make it to Fixer Upper?

@wissox The coverage was put together for the lead because of how Syr-NCSt ended, and for casual watchers, ot deserved it.. They always do that after a game ends while they write the copy, then back to the one just ended. No beef.

@DanR And we benefitted greatly by a loosely called game. Expect more foul calls in the second half.

@JayHawkFanToo Well, I think it is legal to conspire, as you dream by the fire, and face unafraid the plans that you made, walking in a winter wonderland......

Trae Young • Feb 01, 2017 08:19 PM

@Kcmatt7 It is the amount of time they can give KU.

But I am willing to be convinced if anyone has some info--How many OAD PGs have won NCs compared to PGs in their 2nd, 3rd, or 4th years?

Trae Young • Feb 01, 2017 08:10 PM

@Kcmatt7 But somehow we recruited a stud PG. I would rather have a non-stud PGrecruit who develops into a stud player and gives us great ball for 3 to 4 years, than a stud recruit who leaves after one. And note that even a stud freshman PG can be flummoxed by inexperience when faced with a defense he has not seen, as demonstrated aptly by UK's.

Ah, but it would be illegal to conspire to obtain documents protected as private under the law, or to inveigle (thank you, 30 Days To A More Powerful Vocabulary, circa 1971-72) persons with a duty not to disclose confidential matters to do so.

@BeddieKU23 I was impressed that ISU came back to take a lead after falling way behind early, but they couldn't keep it going.

Trae Young • Feb 01, 2017 01:11 PM

@truehawk93 Zach Peters was given a chance for a comeback by Miller after leaving KU and bb entirely because of concussions. He retired from bb after playing just a little bit due to the medical problems, but was kept on scholarship by AZ. I find no fault with Miller on this one.

Vick • Feb 01, 2017 12:13 AM

@ralster I was only commenting on the routine drug use tests where unrelated to an injury, but where employers just try to fog it all up. No opinion on pot's effects. I have seen at least two users close to me who I have long suspected were seriously damaged by heavy pot use in motivation, problem solving skills, and overall judgment. I don't have any issues with your position.

I believe, however, the liquor industry's product harms its victims far beyond anything pot has done. Follow the money--to the ABC stores and suppliers for my suspect of who bankrolls the true antilegalization effort.

Vick • Jan 31, 2017 10:33 PM

@ralster said:

So why is it a widespread fact that if you get hurt on the job and you go for medical evaluation, most employers require a urine drug test?

It is actually not a drug test to determine issues associated with the injury. It is a drug test designed to prove that the employee was violating a rule of employment, giving an emplyer grounds for discharge for cause.

Vick • Jan 31, 2017 10:26 PM

@drgnslayr Not just the athletes! I remember we Liberal Arts students in the Honors Program with bifocals had to fight the girls off!

Vick • Jan 31, 2017 09:06 PM

@Crimsonorblue22 I don't remember how the Star said they got it, but leaking papers is not always done with a signed "here ya go".

Vick • Jan 31, 2017 08:32 PM

@Crimsonorblue22 Possibly if it can be proven it was someone with a duty not to disclose.

But, what if it was a leak by the woman herself or an attorney representing her? They might not be under a duty. An attorney might have been trying to negotiate a settlement with KUAD, for all we know (read: "blackmail"). The disclosure could have been retaliation. Vick might have told someone, who dug into it.

Vick • Jan 31, 2017 08:15 PM

@Crimsonorblue22 Dunno. If Self didn't know, I would expect there will be some repercussions for Vick.

Part of my relatively laid-back response to all this is that we have no idea what came out in the KU hearing. The "preponderance of the evidence" standard allows a lot of possibilities since 1) it was a closed hearing; 2) there is neither a complaint nor an answer on the public record; 3) there is no summary of the evidence: and 4) no criminal charges were recommended.

It is entirely possible that there was a vague complaint, or that a mutual altercation occurred, with some slightly more probative evidence that Vick was more at fault than the woman. A recommendation of probation without requiring antiviolence counseling seems minimal to me.

In today's culture, I would be shocked if Vick would have been allowed to stay on campus if it was an unprovoked or vicious attack.

Vick • Jan 31, 2017 07:59 PM

I cannot imagine HCBS leaving. It would create huge ??? about whether he engaged in misconduct and was really forced out. He would leave under a cloud and people would never shut up about things they don't know about.

Vick • Jan 31, 2017 04:25 PM

@ralster I never said it wasn't a distraction. But I just think it is not a Titanic-level disaster. Minor crisis. Same with Coach Howard, who has since his conviction performed quite capably. Didn't he help bring in Josh? Cannot fault Self for sticking by someone he has known for so long. This wasn't an assistant coach abusing kids in the shower, or hiring prostitutes, or faking athletes' schoolwork, or making payoffs. Frankly, your reaction is on the level I would have had if he had provided drugs to the kids. This was much more forgiveable in my book, and I am not a pro-pot advocate.

My worrying right now is reserved for potential major crises that have nothing to do with KU.

Vick • Jan 31, 2017 03:45 PM

@Blown Nice post. Thank you also for using Coach Howard's name. The continued use of the nickname that is equivalent to calling a member of the KU family "Fatso" is an ongoing burr under my saddle.

they were undefeated at home under Calipari’s whole tenure at KY until just this year when UCLA and KU have beat them, now they’re 75-2 at home under Cal.

Actually, they have lost 6 times total at Rupp under Calipari. Baylor (Dec 2012), UCLA, and KU are his only nonconference losses. He also lost conference games there to Texas A&M (2012-13), Florida, and Arkansas (both 2014).

Still, an amazing feat for our young men to pull it off. I think this is only the second time he has lost at UK after leading by double digits.

It also helps wipe out the memory of KU losing the game in 1976 when Rupp was dedicated.

I am often accused by people I know of being a great moralist, and of being overly harsh in my expectations and judgments of myself and others. I might exceed the speed limit by 8 mph, but I pay every dime of income tax, don't download pirated movies and broke off a close friendship when he wanted me to lie about an affair. In short, straight and narrow.

But I think y'all are going way overboard in calling this a program that is out of control, or assigning blame to Coach Howard for Bragg's infractions. This thread really has degenerated into a massive amount of handwringing and old-lady fainting over a few reported incidents that actually only involve two kids currently in the program. Yet we are being referred all the way back to Giles as an indictment of our team? I will take all the success stories in the meantime as an overwhelming counterbalance to that, or to a DUI here or an embarrassing photo there--any and every day of the year.

Zero tolerance policies are being set up everywhere, and good kids are being kicked out of grade schools for having drawn a picture of a gun. I think HCBS has earned the right to decide who works for him and to use his discretion in evaluating character or administering punishment to athletes or staff.

Please note that if Vick was put on probation for something from 16 or so months ago, that could have been with the cooperation of the athletic department. No indication that it hasn't been successful. Bragg's stuff is more serious, but hardly reason for anyone to pull the rug out from the coach.

Take a deep breath, everyone. Please!

Of course, if the rape incident involved a player, and if it was known to the staff and ignored like Baylor's football players, I will retract this post and light the torches myself.

Another article says paraphernalia with residue. The delay makes me suspect the items were seized, test results finally came back this week confirming pot, and the suspension occurred after Bragg was notified he had a court date.

The police have specifically said the drug case was not related to the rape case. I don't think it is misleading for Self to repeat the official explanation. Anything else would cause more speculation.

It looks like he lost his balance and was trying not to twist. He just came back from a scary injury, didn't he? Just trying to see another possible side. He was 6 feet away when he put his foot back.

@wissox Try the one on the bicycle. See if you can guess why an Indonesian volcano in 1815 helped lead to Kitty Hawk.

@wissox I used to read the WSJ at work every day when working in a financial regulatory agency, then kept reading it when I retired and was able to get home delivery for a nice price. Usually had to go 6 mos between subscriptions to get newly offered discounts. During the election, they offered 2 mos for $1 for digital access. I am now in the regular rate auto renewal period, which is $30 per month. That won't be affordable for more than a couple months, though, but the new administation generates lots of entertainment for now!

I like to read contrasting views, so I have fun comparing HuffPost to the WSJ. But WSJ is almost worth it regardless of political news. The features and in-depth reporting compares with WPost, NYT, or Christian Science Monitor. WSJ was better before Murdoch took over, though, and had lengthier explanatory features. Today had an interesting article about the development of the bicycle, and another one on the nightmares Amazon's "home digital assistant" Alexa is causing parents.

Sorry, had no idea. I had tried the link and it brought up the story. I thought it was in Chrome, but it must have been the app. It won't let me cut and paste, but that happens on certain web sites.

The most important part of the story was the comparison of the Sixers without and with Joel. They are outscored per 100 possessions by 11 woithout, but outscore their opponents by 3.5 with him. Further, they project as an 11 win team without him and as a 52 win team with him!

This would be different, maybe significantly, after their last two games which Philly managed to win without Embiid, who is resting his bruised knee.

@wissox My focus on other top schools failing, especially the consistent #1 or #2 recruiting schools like Duke and UK, is from a broader perspective:

Sure, I like to see rivals lose. But when they have slumps like this, I am deeply appreciative of the consistency KU has shown especially under Self. Replacing entire lineups 3 times, missing on big recruit offers, devastating injuries--for 12 straight years we have been a championship caliber team. WOW!!!
