Addendum: I reread my post and realize that the article did discuss why the investigation was not reopened. But I am not buying the "policy-prevented-it" claim--they could have reopened upon finding that Washington pled guilty after lying when he denied it in the Title IX. Virtually all forums have inherent authority to determine if they were duped.

Clearly and simply, a pack of assholes running the place.

Izzo: RUH-ROH • Apr 02, 2020 07:07 PM

@dylans Since investigators from the police and the Title IX office knew really quickly about it, and the reports say nothing regarding any problems with the contents of Smith's statement, it is hard to say any tampering occurred. Izzo certainly violated the University policy against investigating. The report finding nothing wrong because of his prior relationship with the Smiths is just stupid.

The whole thing is a model of how not to learn from Syracuse's mess, and how to botch an investigation in the most likely way to create the worst possible public image. Even if the ultimate resolution was correct, the hurried approach, the failure to get the missing witness, and the reprehensible failure to show any concern for the complainant call into question the sincerity of the effort. She actually showed more concern for the long-term consequences for her assailant (by agreeing to charges letting him not register as a sex offender) than did the school that was obliged to protect her.

A few notes: It is striking that the police found enough to bring criminal charges with sufficient evidence to enable a guilty plea. How did the school find nothing when their proceeding has a lesser burden of proof? And how did the the investigation not get reopened after the guilty plea?

The article, by the way, is one of the poorest examples of allegedly expositive writing I have ever seen. If anyone can figure out a firm chronology of events without making their own flow chart, they have a better ability at verbal jigsaws than I do.

Finally, Engler should be sent to outer Siberia.

Do yourself a favor, even if you never cheered for the Royals. Joe Posnanski's essay on Dan Quisenberry today on The Athletic is phenomenal, and his writing alone is worth the subscription. Get some Kleenex first.

@dylans Think more broadly...This sets a wonderful precedent for arguing that any suspensions we might get should start retroactively to the loss of 9 games this year!

Wow, amazing! Of course we know Grimes would have won both awards if he had stayed...

Facetious, people, or an April Fools comment if there ever was one!!

Here in SC, we are in the 20% of Americans not subject to a stay-home order. But we both have some vulnerabilities in case we get infected so we stay home anyway except for walks. Gov closed all nonessential businesses yesterday.

@Crimsonorblue22 Sorry! I think that was the guy from China who went to the Phillipines and died there. I didn't read it closely yet 'cuz I was reading the Chiefs stuff.

Amazing to think wistfully of merely 7 weeks ago as "a different time".....

@Crimsonorblue22 I ordered it from the Star website a day or two after the game. Also ordered a coffee cup with a front page repro to match the one I have from the 1970 SB!

Just received my Super Bowl victory edition of the February 3 KC Star!

Fun to read, although "King Them" seems like a weird headline.

Item of note: Inside Section 1, there is an article about the first death outside of China from the coronavirus.

@FarmerJayhawk Same for the U.S., though.

@dylans Incidentally, you keep calling me angry. I don't get it. I feel strongly that we don't need to stretch existing norms to honor the team, but I am not angry about it. I just don't want the majority of basketball to ridicule what we do like we ridicule KSU. You have made the most personal comments.

Other bball news • Mar 26, 2020 09:11 PM

@dylans Dunno what you are reading. Name calling?

@Texas-Hawk-10 Sorry--got crossed up with my exchanges with Dylans. He was responding to someone else, as were you, and not the sub-thread.

I thought it seemed a little odd... Mea culpa!

Other bball news • Mar 26, 2020 06:53 PM

@Texas-Hawk-10 Should we care about ratings that won't exist, for theoretical games that won't be played, as a basis for making distinctions among teams in fantasies about national championships that should not be awarded?

Why would ratings matter? If so, let Duke, UK and UNC fight it out every year.

Other bball news • Mar 26, 2020 03:36 PM

@dylans I am not angry. Just surprised you want to have a "We participated better trophy."

Other bball news • Mar 26, 2020 03:15 AM

We are not KSU grasping at straws, that is why.

Beating other contenders is always the test of any champion.

I suppose we should go ahead and have the media decide who is the champion in all the other college sports, give the Larry O'Brien trophy to the NBA best record, and the Stanley Cup to the NHL leader?

If MLB doesn't start, I suppose we can use spring training records in lieu of the World Series?

Why would anyone want something that would just piss everyone else off?

Other bball news • Mar 25, 2020 10:11 PM

A lot of people have been willing to concede KU proved itself to be the best team in the country over a grueling season, even people who, like me, think it is stupid to name us champs.

So, how about a banner that says,

"2019-2020

Consensus #1 Team

NCAA Division 1 Mens BB"

@BShark The Dems accomplished that in Cook County in 1960, rumor says.

Amazing how the "but the economy!" people seem to not understand that patients in hospitals, and dead people, do not add to GDP.

All I can say, watching the effort to provide a trillion dollars in corporate welfare, is that it is a damned good thing Bernie and socialism have no chance of defeating this wonderful capitalist system conservatives are always Trump-eting so we can let business prosper without all that government.

@mayjay sarcasm?

I was just seeing if an intelligent person could say "completely under control" with a straight face. I discovered it is indeed impossible. There are two possible explanations for POTUS having done so. One explanation is that he actually cracked up and they edited the videotape. But careful examination of the video shows no sign of editing.

And so, the other explanation seems to be the only one left..

@Crimsonorblue22 Germany is now restricting public gatherings to two people (except for families).

@DanR I am just so very proud that we are doing so much better than other countries and have it completely under control.

Interesting article about vaccines they are trying to develop.

I fear Italy's worst day so far will be one a number of countries will in the future wish they could limit their losses to.

Hate to be a downer, but that curve is going close to straight up and will for awhile until it starts to flatten out. I suspect for 12 to 18 months we will see ups and downs and wild swings as we realize that economic activity cannot stop entirely and as people get exposed in waves. I hope I am wrong, but I think people need to know the need to prepare for mre dufficulties than we could have ever imagined.

I would be more optimistic if they had a firm idea of whether anyone is immune after recovering. But with over 300,000 cases worldwide, they still do not seem to know because of the difficulty in knowing if people got ill a second time or just were declared recovered incorrectly. A vaccine depends on knowing that progression accurately.

Insider Trading • Mar 21, 2020 03:24 PM

Your CEO scenario is an argument for corporate inside information to be disclosed more publicly and sooner than it is now so all shareholders have equal opportunity to make decisions. The idea that a CEO selling their shares gives everyone information doesn't really hold water since there is a lag in the reporting and anyone seeing the report has no idea why the CEO sold a bunch (college tuition due?).

It is highly inefficient economically to depend on shareholders guessing about insider trading as a means of detecting crucial corporate info. When I was at the CFTC, we often worked with the SEC on these things. Reporting disclosures sometimes alerted our regulators to the need for an investigation. But even with govt investigative power it took a long time to determine why a transaction occurred. Not much use to investors because a sale, or buy, could even be planned far in advance under a contract, ot triggered by economic indicators.

You are correct: insider trading is perfectly legal provided it is done properly. We want corporations to be run by people who have a stake. But the rules against using inside information are designed to avoid letting the insiders be the first in line which leads to distrust of market pricing.

As to all public officials, I would prohibit all market activity except for blind investments in mutual funds. These trades were legal until 2014. One of these guys was one of the 2 senators who voted against the law then.

But in my mind, this may not even count as inside info. There were many sources telling us that this was going to spread, and anyone with an ounce of realism knew the markets would tank. The fact that they got a secret briefing sure didn't seem to motivate any pushback against the Admin's rosy posturing.

Nice discussion, by the way. Reminds me of dinner discussions on theoretical stuff that would go on for hours in Law School.

Afterthought: If trading on insider information is victimless, then how far would that extend? Let's say the CEO, the board, all the officers, and all their relatives own half the shares, and by dumping in concert take virtually all the equity out within a couple of minutes and leave the stock in a company frozen by the NYSE--no victims among the remaining 50% of shareholders?

A Fifth Year for Doke? • Mar 19, 2020 02:55 PM

@dylans If I recall correctly, consensus All American used to be recognized as a player named AA in at least 3 of 4 of the AP and UPI wire service polls, Sporting News, and some other group (forget which).

Now that there are a lot more AA teams, it is more of an assessment of whether a player is named to several of them. It has been expanded by some sources to include anyone named even 2nd and 3rd team.

I personally think it is like saying an A-minus student is a 4.0 student because he got all "A"s. I think the term All-American should reflect someone recognized as being one of the top five players, i.e., first team only, and "consensus" meaning by at least X number of analysts (I would say 3).

@DanR I would like to say that sounds really interesting!

Well, I would like to say that..... 🥴

I spend a lot of time on cruise forums. Cruisers are disproportionately 60 and over, and they were showing the same "no one tells me what to do" attitude and continuing to go on cruises until the lines finally shut down. It isn't generational, it's the universal invincibility belief that something bad won't happen to me. Explains why you sometimes have to threaten people with kicking them out of the car to get them to wear a seat belt.

A Fifth Year for Doke? • Mar 18, 2020 10:35 PM

Hey, if the NCAA voids our last 2 seasons, cutting the streak to 13, we should just proudly tell the world that we have this year just continued the streak. Based on a theory that if the NCAA wants to just vacate seasons as if they never existed, then we didn't lose in those seasons.

"Looking really hard for silver linings" is my new motto!

Mythbusters: Wilt, the Incredible Stilt! • Mar 18, 2020 05:33 PM

@dylans I put the smiley on my post because I thought you were intending to be ironic. Go ahead, claim it!

I think Russell was the greatest winner of all time in any team sport, Bo Jackson the most amazing athlete I ever saw, and Wilt the best scorer of all time. I would give Wilt the best individual athlete of all time, but I think he was not as good a team player as Russell. Wilt's stats are amazing, and it seems he could do anything he wanted, but I think he was too focused on stat-chasing (and chasing other things, too). The Lakers title showed what he could do when he didn't need to be the primary scorer.

NCAA Tournament: Should it happen? • Mar 18, 2020 03:37 PM

@truehawk93 Anyone not understanding why shutting down as much contact as possible is necessary needs to read this latest update on Italy at worldometers.com. Flattening the curve is important because not doing so overwhelms a healthcare system, and this happens:

Italy: COVID-19 has infected 2,629 health workers, or 8.3% of the total (more than twice the percentage in China), as of yesterday March 17. In Bergamo (Lombardy region), 118 out of about 600 family doctors (20%) have been infected, and a 65-year-old doctor has died. Today, a 57-year-old doctor has died: he was the secretary of the Federation of General Practitioners of Lodi. A week ago, a 67-year-old family doctor, president of the Varese Medical Association, had died.

They might have just been covering the bases to treat possible strep or bacterial pneumonia, either of which are easier to get when you have a viral respiratory disease. I love Zpac! (allergic to penicillin) 🤧

One thing that may result in the NCAA having to at least print a bracket is the bonuses to coaches for making the tournament. The bonuses for S16, E8, and F4 are likely toast, as are the Championship bonuses.

Since the NCAA has the ability to do a selection of the 65 teams, if they refuse they are arguably depriving coaches of actual earnings, and they might face litigation from coaches who, among them, have millions at stake. (If the schools pay bonuses anyway, that would solve it.)

what the hell do they do - - - they have to be tested a 2nd time

That is why most effective quarantines for this require 2 consecutive negative test 24 hrs or more apart to be released. They didn't do that when the US hastily flew the passengers back from Japan who had been aboard the Diamond Princess. That resulted in some who later were revealed to be positive being on the plane.
