Bad shot!

todays games all over the nation β€’ Jan 20, 2018 09:15 PM

@Jayballer54 You are right. Saying he is incredible = calling him God.

todays games all over the nation β€’ Jan 20, 2018 09:14 PM

@bmensch1 Yet, even at 40% (14 of 35), Trae is still shooting better than the team as a whole.

Preston Gone β€’ Jan 20, 2018 08:08 PM

@Blown

This chart shows APR calculation. Teams get 1 pt for each athlete staying in school and another pt for being academically eligible. So, assuming he was academically eligible from fall classes, BP gets us 1 out of 2 pts because he did not stay. Total points divided by total possible points x 1000 gives the team score.

So it costs us but not too bad if everyone else sticks around and does ok.

@Jayballer54 I think we will wait for @bmensch1 to post his, oh, let's say 10th or so, diatribe about Trae before we get on him about it.

@JayHawkFanToo My suggestion was not a crooked deal. I think it could also have included the NCAA which might not have enough proof of fire but saw some smoke.

@cragarhawk Well, we gotta find something else to wonder and gripe about now, don't we?

Preston Gone β€’ Jan 20, 2018 02:52 PM

Okay Billy Mom: So he is going overseas to make "millions" like you said (in the next five games--might be the highest pro rata contract in history).

Now, you promised the whole story when this was over?

I am always the biggest pro-HCBS apologist out here, but the whole process smacks of a bargain. We draw it out, file everything, make it look like we think you (BP) are only involved in something minor, and then you go overseas so the NCAA can just dispose of it without acting. You get to assert your innocence, we get you completing 1st semester--and maybe we also get to avoid any tarnish if the investigation implicated a booster.

Zion Tipoff Time Tea Leaves β€’ Jan 20, 2018 01:17 PM

@JayHawkFanToo ... P.S.: Why in the heck are you up at God-awful-o'clock?

Zion Tipoff Time Tea Leaves β€’ Jan 20, 2018 01:07 PM

@JayHawkFanToo I think he is an adidas guy. The Lebron references I have seen about Zion (none in this article) are about him being the best known high school player since Lebron. Barrett is from Toronto, I believe, and, lacking all the Zion monster videos, seems much less well-known nationally.

If Clemson had finally won at NC last week after 58 straight losses in Durham, that could have been a big boost. But maybe Zion will want the challenge to do it next year.

Oh, these kids, trying to pick a school knowing they will be multimillionaires in about 17 months. Wonder what that is like....wow!

Zion Tipoff Time Tea Leaves β€’ Jan 20, 2018 04:53 AM

This UK article doesn't think it bodes well that Zion changed his announcement time to 8:15 EST on ESPN2, because that coincides with UK's tipoff time.

Read into the tea leaves what you will. All times EST. You folks in the midwest hinterlands will need to read the leaves adjusting for CST.

NCAA Tourney Selection change β€’ Jan 20, 2018 12:25 AM

@justanotherfan In addition, as I have posted previously, just about half of Div 1 teams are Eastern time zone, so it always will seem that there is a bias in selection toward the East coast.

Day dreaming about next years team β€’ Jan 20, 2018 12:17 AM

@Fightsongwriter Oh, you are very wrong. I think we can all agree Tyler Self was much less NBA ready--oh, wait, he did get an NBA job, didn't he?

My mistake!

Day dreaming about next years team β€’ Jan 19, 2018 11:28 PM

@Kcmatt7 And I am thinking he could well decide to join KU. Those "coach caring" things resonated with my recollection of so many comments over the years about HCBS.

Then, Dok, Preston, and De Sousa all come back, joining the Lawton transfers. Overloaded with all those studs playing up front, we would be the first team ever to experiment with 1 guard and 4 bigs, and we would lose over 25 games before winning the B12 tourney and advancing to the F4.

Day dreaming about next years team β€’ Jan 19, 2018 10:45 PM

@Kcmatt7 Zion is now considered a strong Clemson lean, but SC pulling up, according to local sources. People who watched him signing autographs at a Myrtle Beach tourney talked about how animated he was posing for pics with people in SC and Clemson garb.

He has said being injured for weeks really helped him decide because he said it revealed a lot to him about whether coaches contacting him were interested in him as a person as well as for his game.

Team of Bigs β€’ Jan 19, 2018 10:38 PM

@SlickRockJayhawk We need more perimeter passing than that gives us. I would wait a long time for Doke to get those alley oops because he would be dbl teamed all the time.

Sam Cunliffe: MIA β€’ Jan 19, 2018 10:30 PM

@HighEliteMajor I was playing golf then. Since that time, I had to get a new hobby. My wife calls this "your little basketball friends group."

Sam Cunliffe: MIA β€’ Jan 19, 2018 10:06 PM

@HighEliteMajor You are right about me not including the EJ and Releford parts of your argument. That was because a lot of your discussion today was about Selby, so I jumped on that. And I actually was around for those arguments over the years, but only as a lurker not as a participant on either board.

Releford is a perfect example of someone I always thought would do great if given more opportunity, but when he was he did not seem to be consistently aggressive enough: he would show a nice deep range on a 3 but then not attempt another shot for 6 minutes. Frustrating! But I will never forget his RS year when every single bench camera shot showed him jumping and screaming his supportc and that huge smile as he high-5ed everybody. Mitch does that this year, but he is playing. TReleford was fully participating best he could while not playing. An admirable trait.

I only brought up the NBA to show, exactly as 'bate has posted, that Selby's ceiling was not as high as we thought (and, by the way, I wanted him playing more), so the inference is fair that he might not have performed at a higher level given more PT. So the pro careers of Reed and Mstar are not relevant to that discussion.

I think Selby's injury lingered a lot longer than he let on, and he hid it for the draft.

Kief's turnovers may not have led to VCU pts, but they cost KU at least 8 points if we avg 1 pt per possession.

Huggy postgame β€’ Jan 19, 2018 05:00 PM

@kjayhawks I have a very similar cursing style (too much), and it appears a very similar eating style (also too much).

Fashion sense, too, it seems (comfortable) (but my ex-model sister in law says "comfortable" is just a euphemism for "sloppy").

Pro Jayhawk updates β€’ Jan 19, 2018 04:57 PM

@dylans @wissox Yes, he has stats!

In 25 games in the G League this year, Andrew averaged 16.5 pts, 5.2 rebs, and 1.5 assists.

He just signed with Atlanta on Jan 15. That screen shot was only about his lack of NBA game stats.

Sam Cunliffe: MIA β€’ Jan 19, 2018 04:33 PM

@HighEliteMajor

To suggest that Reed and Morningstar were responsible for the defeat because of how they shot during a NCAA game ignores not only their other contributions but also the dismal ball handling by Kief. 8 turnovers was the killer, not missed shots.

Your argument that Selby would have taken us to the Final 4 and a trophy if better prepared (by taking more of Brady's minutes) ignores his poor performance in the VCU game and his own poor fg shooting (37 % for the year). More tellingly, it ignores the history of some of our deepest teams or most experienced superstars who had poor performances in the our elimination games--witness Graham's 0 for 12 in 3 pt shooting over the last two E8 games. Or our experienced team's inability to make layups against UCLA, or the super-experienced 2003 team's abysmal FT shooting in the final.

You have made Selby into a fantasy hero who would have taken us not only past VCU, but also through the semifinal and to the net cutting ceremony. The same guy who didn't cut it in the NBA or the D League. All because Self didn't replace his Big 12 1st Team Defensive Team honoree with the superstar who, given the chance, pretty much failed to demonstrate his super ability.

NCAA Tourney Selection change β€’ Jan 19, 2018 03:05 AM

@drgnslayr I think when teams crow about beating a #1 team, that lasts forever for puposes of talking about the team's record against #1 teams.

But for evaluation purposes, like the committee, they use updated rankings and statistical rankings, not the level at the time of the contest. That is the same for football, too, which is why teams that beat a preseason #1 get upset when that team never recovers and falls out of the top 25.

But if a team's performance has changed drastically to to an injury, I think they consider those things, too.

I think not using the latest ranks would be an analytical nightmare. Using the latest means using a much larger sample size and lots more data for all teams, avoiding the wide swings that can occur early in the season.

I.e., why should team A get super credit in the second game of the year for beating a team that scored 100 in its first game, rising to a top 5 spot in RPI based solely on that offensive performance but then goes on to have a miserable rest of the year? If it is a horrible team, one good game should not benefit a bad team's opponent that happened to play them early.

The financial aid cannot come from or be arranged by the athletic program. Any student is eligible to apply for normal aid packages, including work/study, loans, grants, and academic scholarships, and then try to walk on if available. But the permissible benefits limitations, and other rules against receiving money from 3rd parties associated with the school, still apply to walkons.

Can Bruce help us out again? β€’ Jan 18, 2018 02:16 AM

@Jayballer54 Gotta hand it to you! Apparently ESPN has been doing it for several years. Their ombudsman wrote a column in 2016 complaining about the fact that they do not tell the audience when the announcers are remote. Read it--it goes through all the considerations and compares how it works for different sports.

We get on site announcers all the time, from what I can tell. Fran, Jay, Dick, etc. Helps to be a blueblood and in the mix every season!

@JayHawkFanToo Yeah, and I thought it was much more recent. A lot of that happening as I approach SocSec.

Can Bruce help us out again? β€’ Jan 17, 2018 07:08 PM

@HighEliteMajor Simply put, Self wanted OADs but has not always treated them as OADs. Some, like JJ and Wiggins, were talented enough that playing them from the beginning was better than the alternative. But they both played a position where more freedom seems to be acceptable, and their roles included both driving and ranging outside, gambling on D for steals, enhancing ball movement side to side, etc. Diallo and Bragg were expected to play that 4/5 spot that for Bill requires precision and understanding of the high/low, setting picks, defending the rim, etc. If they didn't fulfill that role, he did not want them out there because he did not plan for them contributing any other way, and he believed the team did better when someone who "bought in" was in there.

Can Bruce help us out again? β€’ Jan 17, 2018 06:49 PM

@kjayhawks And that is what the downside is of giving a freshman the keys. OADs are expected to be polished and great and championship worthy right off the bat.

Teams used to develop talent, and everyone realized that it takes time. Now, coaches are letting talent develop the team. When the talent has rough edges, it is a rough process.

Can Bruce help us out again? β€’ Jan 17, 2018 06:43 PM

@kjayhawks Graham has a better supporting cast. But, all those shots by Young would not be as big a negative if OU rebounded them for 2nd chance points. Unfortunately, they rank 228th in offensive rebs.

Trae ranks 7th on his team in effective fg %age, which may indicate that he is making his teammates better shooters than he is himself.

Can Bruce help us out again? β€’ Jan 17, 2018 06:31 PM

@JayHawkFanToo "...in context, it is not as bad as it appears at first sight. The kid has huge talent."

Well, yes, it was just as bad as it looked. But yes, the kid has huge talent. As @Crimsonorblue22 asked, will he allow Kruger to coach him? Which also means, will this be his epiphany in learning how to be brilliant without bullheaded disregard of overly risky ball-handling? And his passing needs to understand his teammates' skills and tendencies while they learn how to play with the wunderkind--I wonder how many TOs Nate Archibald had before the Kings learned how to anticipate those spectacular assists? (I could not find TO stats for KC years, not until he was with Celtics).
