@DoubleDD No one said they are making money off it, only that they got free publicity. Just as the media was analyzed as having given the Donald millions of dollars worth of attention for free in the election by covering and endlessly discussing every utterance, glance, tweet, or movement he made even before he announced.

There is a reason both he and LaVar are considered to be marketing geniuses.

Fire Beatty. Fire him now. • Nov 24, 2017 02:07 PM

@nuleafjhawk One of the first questions we discussed in my first year law school Contracts class was based on his allegedly "rather sizeable son".

He said, if his son went to the all-you-can-eat buffet that had no hours of service posted, how long could he continue to eat? Could he stay all day? Through both lunch and dinner? Force the restaurant to stay open as he consumed their vittles?

LaVar , LaVar , LaVar - - Damn • Nov 24, 2017 02:01 PM

@REHawk Trump is generally believed to not be interested in investing in brand names other than his own.

I think he is more likely to tweet, after this 13 mil news, that Big Baller should pay him for the publicity.

Then the usual media hoopla will ensue, he will be accused by some as attempting to obtain compensation for performing an act as President (talking to a foreign leader), La Var will get the chance to appear more stupid than he is already, Twitter will go aflame even more, Trump will be cleared by a First Amendment analysis by the ACLU, he will get in trouble yet again for insulting the ACLU even after they helped him, and really by then no one will give a crap because worse will happen in the meantime.

@wissox Texas Southern is correct. Thank you!

Don't you just hate it when someone expresses a cocky opinion and screws it up so they just look silly? Moi!

@BShark At least 35 pts. People thought Southern could be close, too. I think the team is getting into a groove we have seldom seen.

@jayballer54 Your last 4 paragraphs could have been my own as I celebrate all those things, and more, today with my wife. We will see the family next week. So, we are going to a wonderful restaurant near Charleston which was the last place we were able to take my mother before she passed away in summer 2016. It will sort of feel like being with her because we met my niece there, and Mom brightened up when she saw her as if her dementia had never occurred.

And buffet--just my style!

@Bwag To be fair, Fox is the PG of their future. Right now he is raw, but remember, so was Frank at a comparable experience level (sophomore). The kid is the quickest and fastest, I think, player I have ever seen. He drives with abandon and is agile beyond belief. Frank may play better than him for awhile, but if he doesn't get injured Fox will supplant him and everyone else in this draft.

I think Hill, however, is a waste of Sac's investment compared to either.

Frank is killing it on ESPN right now... • Nov 23, 2017 05:57 AM

In 44 mins combined, PGs Fox and Hill had 10 pts, 4 assists, 7 rebs, and 5 turnovers. +/- combined of -5 in an 11 point victory.

In 26 mins, Frank had 11 pts, 7 assists, 5 rebs, and 2 turnovers. +/- of +17, highest of anyone on either team.

Frank gets it done.

@Lulufulu In his 3rd & 4th years of college while at KU. Played 2 at UMiss, sat out at KU (injured his knee in practice), then played last year. He graduated on time, so could transfer & play immediately since he had a year of eligibility left.

@wissox I think I remember that scene, too. Unfortunately, it never happened.

@truehawk93 Seems like the best evidence is the captains' words themselves. They plaanned it, right before. No allegation of it being provoked. Speculation of another scenario is pretty much fantasy.

Beatty apologized because as coach he is the face of the team to Jayhawk Nation and the world.

Thank you! It will be weird watching KU games in the early afternoon.

I have been drafting some stories to tell the 4 year old. He is a big solar system fan. On the last trip he wanted robot stories. So on this trip, my little boy hero and his trusty sidekick the robot meet an astronaut (there actually is one in the family who has written several books), explore the moon, and spin Saturn's rings.

@wissox You should remind them of the new opportunities on the correct provider to watch table tennis or whatever the tradeoff was.

@jaybate-1.0 18 nights beginning Nov 30. Includes 6 nights at the kids' house fragmented around 7 and 5 night stays at 2 timeshares. All on Maui. Marine son and wife flying over from Oahu on 2nd weekend so we can all have the first family Christmas all together since 2006 or 07. Wifey very excited! Going up to see sunrise at 10,000 ft on Haleakala on this trip.

Big basketball watch afternoon/tonight • Nov 22, 2017 09:40 PM

@Gorilla72 Hmmmm......Similarly, KU is 12-71 in football over the past 83 games. We are a Div I team playing against Div I teams. You just might think we could do substantially better than a Div II bb team playing Div I teams over that many games.

Then again, Chaminade gets to recruit people to Hawaii. Lawrence--AFH-- is the Mecca of college hoops, but that isn't a paradise. Maybe we can put some palm trees in the stadium reno?

@nuleafjhawk I always have to stop in that book part way. The result is allegedly foretold, but the battles are still raging on so the tactics still need daily refinement. Manson finally blinking out definitely sends another casualty back home to General Beelzebub.

"They All Poison" • Nov 22, 2017 09:23 PM

@KUSTEVE No, those things don't show him to be a racist. It usually requires a pretty substantial body of work to draw those conclusions.

For the record, "white privilege" is not the same as racism. It is a term that attempts to describe the cultural/racial/economical factors affecting the lenses through which people view disputes.

For example, I grew up in Prairie Village. Walked 2 blocks to the Jones Store for my 15 to 25 hr/week job, and could have had jobs at any number of other stores. No crime, school had no gangs, parents able to lend me a car on snowy nights, and I was earning money solely for my own entertainment. If I read in the paper about the problems facing inner city youth such as drugs and dropping out, my instinctive reaction might be to suggest that they go get jobs.

My suggestion would have been shaped by my background, but would not be racist. It would instead reflect my lack of awareness of how few opportunities might be available for jobs for inner city youths, and also reflect my mistaken belief that my upbringing could be generalized to anyone of HS age.

That would be talking from white privilege. Refusing to realize my advantages and making mental adjustments based on other realities? That would probably be racist.

Are we done recruiting? • Nov 22, 2017 09:03 PM

@jayballer54 Maybe those were not for games. Sounds like he wants to watch coaches in action, under stress, how they adapt in the game, etc. I would think all potential players would want to see that.

Buy NEVER CALL ME A HERO by Dusty Kleiss • Nov 22, 2017 09:00 PM

@jaybate-1.0 Thx for the suggestion. I will get it. To arrive Sat. My first serious book I remember reading was Walter Lord's Incredible Victory. Here are some reviews of this one quoted on Amazon:

“ Never Call Me a Hero is a rare and precious gift from a significant warrior to his posterity. Published posthumously, Dusty Kleiss’s stirring memoir contradicts his own title: Kleiss willingly accepted the risks that defined his heroism, and changed the course of the Second World War.” (BARRETT TILLMAN, author of Enterprise: America’s Fightingest Ship and On Wave and Wing: The 100-Year Quest to Perfect the Aircraft Carrier)

“Lieutenant Kleiss is one of history’s ultimate unsung heroes. In this remarkable memoir, the decorated dive-bomber pilot tells a war story for the ages. Dusty Kleiss’s name should be known to every American-adult and schoolchild alike. This book will teach you something on every page.” (JAMES D. HORNFISCHER, author of The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors and The Fleet at Flood Tide)

“Laced with humor, ‘Dusty’ Kleiss’s memoir is an honest, riveting account of a brave pilot’s life. Never Call Me a Hero is equally a vivid and unforgettable first-hand view into America’s greatest victory at sea.” (DAN HAMPTON (USAF, Ret.), recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross and bestselling author of Viper Pilot and Lords of the Sky)

“A real treasure. …It is hard to conceive that a better first-person book on the first six months of America’s war in the Pacific will surface. … An instant classic, a front-row seat on a Pacific war journey that is action-packed throughout.” (STEPHEN L. MOORE, Dallas Morning News)

“Inspiring. … America produced men like Dusty Kleiss in their millions when they were needed, ordinary men who presented themselves when called, put on uniforms, and did extraordinary things. … [Kleiss was] a great American and a hero, whether or not he fancied the honorific.” (American Spectator)

“Incredible. ... A standout autobiography for anyone interested in bravery, courage, and first-person accounts of military heroics during World War II.” (Library Journal (starred review))

“Masterful. ... Dusty Kleiss was and remains in a class by himself. ... Much more than a vivid remembrance of his heroic role.” (Naval History)

“Without histrionics or bravado, Dusty Kleiss gives us a fascinating personal account of this seminal naval battle, and a great read as well. Never Call Me a Hero lets you feel what it was like to fight in the Pacific, and to grow up in Depression-era Middle America, too.” (JONATHAN PARSHALL, co-author, Shattered Sword: The Untold Story of the Battle of Midway)

“A riveting narrative about the Battle of Midway. ... A saga of life in the midst of a war.” (Daily Press)

“[Kleiss] helped to turn the tide of the war. ... Conveys the personal nature of war and honors his fellow flyers who lost their lives.” (Seapower Magazine)

LaVar , LaVar , LaVar - - Damn • Nov 22, 2017 08:37 PM

@REHawk Do you remember when people would bring up a pet peeve by saying, "Do you know what's wrong with America today?" and then cite some silly thing like 4-way stops? Or robocalls, or too many choices at McD's or something?

No one says that stuff anymore. Too many serious or tragic things that are wrong.

I am curious to know what really went on behind closed doors.

I always want to know what runners and fielders are talking about in baseball. And what players and refs talk about all the time in our favorite sport.

Doke/top 10 ESPN • Nov 22, 2017 08:29 PM

@JayHawkFanToo I took it as tongue in cheek precisely for the reason you cite. You took it too seriously. I was going to point out a Javelin missile would take out all 3, and it weighs about 22 lbs, but I didn't want to interrupt y'all's incisive back-and-forth. (SMILE)

@JayHawkFanToo Maybe the 'Stache didn't like playing against elite players in practice. ML upbraided him, as I recall.

@REHawk He was way after that (Dec 2016). You might be thinking of Evan Maxwell, who, I believe, left in a timeline near but before that event.
No resolution I have heard of.

On Nov 29, it is east meets west:
Eastern Kentucky vs Dwight's Western Kentucky.

@JayHawkFanToo He may not have left voluntarily despite the official story.

Doke/top 10 ESPN • Nov 22, 2017 07:42 PM

@JayHawkFanToo As to the first two: Saw a few on the streets of DC on 9/12 16 years ago. I see them all the time around Ft. Jackson. Once at a light, in a glance at my rear view mirror, I saw a long tank barrel pointed directly at me. That almost made me very Depends-ent.

The big mine trucks? Never, but we did see four flatbeds last week, eack carrying one monster tire about 13 feet in diameter. So cool! We see all types of fun stuff here.

ESPN/WHY? • Nov 22, 2017 07:34 PM

@Texas-Hawk-10 And I think a few people on the West Coast and Hawaii might want to catch those games. (You know, all those fanatic KU football fans in Hilo.)

@KUSTEVE You did it with all that Shania lust.

"They All Poison" • Nov 22, 2017 07:12 PM

@JayHawkFanToo My teachers, and yours, too (probably), always said a preposition was an improper thing to end a sentence with. Usually, you could see about half the class wondering why the other half was laughing.

"They All Poison" • Nov 22, 2017 06:54 PM

One thing I find highly ironic is how often people who make strong comments on the internet about a person using improper grammar so often use "your" instead of "you're," and do not seem to adhere to established rules of punctuation. Then they would defend that by saying that the meaning was clear and no one expects perfection on the internet. Just in post-game interviews, where speech must meet formal business rules.

"They All Poison" • Nov 22, 2017 06:41 PM

As to being offended, gosh, that first post sounded an awful lot like it. My ability to read must be diminishing.

Michael Porter Jr Likely Out For Year • Nov 22, 2017 05:18 PM

@kjayhawks No, Wiggins will have a single-digit game or foul out or not win a title or something, and that is like someone unstrapping poyo-merde's straitjacket and letting him near a keyboard again.

"They All Poison" • Nov 22, 2017 05:13 PM

@justanotherfan Perhaps we could have Barbara Billingsley come in and translate whenever it is too offensive to some ears. As I recall, she very memorably "speaks jive."

In a more direct reply to you, it reminds me of refined wordsmith William F. Buckley's defense of his having used the word "crap" in an essay. He was pilloried for being crude and for setting a bad example. ("But what about the children?") As he pointed out, sometimes the less refined way of talking gets the point across more eloquently than refined speech ever could.

Did I see some lengthy periods where Doke and Mitch played together? Looked like it helped ML become more involved in the offense.

Doke/top 10 ESPN • Nov 22, 2017 04:30 PM

@jayballer54 Hammond, the team Zion was playing, was only able to prepare with 2 practices for that game, their season opener. 9 of their 13 players had previously been unavailable because they were on the fb team, and had won their SC state championship game on Saturday.

It is a very expensive private school about 1.5 miles away from my house. All the big SUVs zooming through the neighborhood are a huge irritant around here!

"They All Poison" • Nov 22, 2017 04:22 PM

@HighEliteMajor I think he already has a job, but I agree that a minority had better adhere to majority expectations when interviewing because of the established prejudice against minority culture and language. Thanks for making that point.

"They All Poison" • Nov 22, 2017 02:06 PM

Obviously, I can't get no satisfaction.

"They All Poison" • Nov 22, 2017 02:05 PM

@HighEliteMajor All of his players are African-American, half are Southern, most are urban. It is not a unique observation to note that the youth in this demographic often speaks in that style, as do many white kids. Rappers of all races use it, too.

Unlike my grandparents, from rural Iowa whose use reflected lack of education beyond 8th grade and lifelong immersion in groups with similar backgrounds, the current usage appears voluntary and seems designed to reflect a "cool" aura. Like the 4.6 gpa HS senior linebacker next door who talks to us in the best damned English I ever heard, but who talks with his friends precisely as Davis did in that quote.
