@JayHawkFanToo 7 pts in the '88 championship game (no misses from the field), with 4 assists.

His only pts in that tournament. Which helps with the idea that there might be a guy somewhere who can provide a significant contribution when needed.

"They All Poison" β€’ Nov 22, 2017 12:13 PM

All this conversation ain't satisfactioning me.

"They All Poison" β€’ Nov 22, 2017 12:06 PM

Funny! The Topeka paper edited his comment, but still left in a contraction:

β€œAll of ’em are poison,” Davis said with a laugh.

"They All Poison" β€’ Nov 22, 2017 11:50 AM

@approxinfinity @HighEliteMajor The poor grammar in music thing has interested me for years. Hundreds of singers do it. I had to get used to it.

As for Davis, it doesn't bother me under the circumstances. Colloquial speech style that probably reflects the backgrounds of many of his players and his potential recruits. An affront to my Shawnee Mission education, but he isn't recruiting those places, I'd guess. And sometimes short, pithy, wrong grammar makes the point far better.

Who ever heard, "That dog doesn't hunt"? Try it in a bar here in SC, you might not get out unscathed.

"They All Poison" β€’ Nov 22, 2017 04:05 AM

@HighEliteMajor Does it bother you when singers like Elvis or Shania Twain sing phrases like "you ain't" or "that don't" ?

Frank Mason: NBA Starter β€’ Nov 21, 2017 07:57 PM

@Kubie Interesting that his NBA averages through the Article date (Nov 16) are almost identical to his KU freshman year stats. 5.6 pts & 2.1 assists in NBA, 5.5 pts &2.1 assists as a freshman.

Was cheering for you and Wisconsin last night but for some reason you are insisting on blaming me, even though you almost gave up on them. ("What's with them negative waves, Moriarty?"). 4. I think they managed this one all by themselves.

Too many dumb plays, turning down open shots, missed bunnies, point guard looked almost panicky at times -- all curable. They will defintely learn, and I think you will see some good stuff.

Chorfs β€’ Nov 21, 2017 04:54 AM

@kjayhawks I was going to say exactly that but forgot Sorenson's name. One of the guys who tries to tackle by hitting without trying to grab the guy. Bounces off more often than not while watching his target sprint away, it seems.

Big basketball watch afternoon/tonight β€’ Nov 21, 2017 04:52 AM

@JayHawkFanToo Android phone doesn't do that. I just keep checking the notification icon for new posts.

@kjayhawks He is a Div 1 player who should be 10th in rotation but has been forced to be either 6th or 7th depending on Doke.

What most people don't realize is that ML and CY both don't ever get more than a couple of minutes, if that, to practice with the first 5. They are needed to play the opponent role in practice. With the short practices, they probably get even less.

CY looks better because he isn't expected to do anything except occupy space on defense, get an occasional rebound and kick it out, and score if a sure oppty comes along. His 2 more years of college bb give him more experience in anticipating plays, plus he is physically stronger. Whereas ML, coming in earlier while the starters are operating at light speed compared to him, is expected to move more, defend actively out to the 3 line, set screens in the high post, be a threat from midrange to the 3 line, rebound with no inside help, and defend the rim. He is still awkward now, but for a guy who usually only practices opponents' plays, and considering Hudyization is not always rapid, he really still has a lot of potential.

@JayHawkFanToo Yeah, I know but I hope he plays against a bunch of 6'6" centers so I can relive those memories.

Too Bad Baker β€’ Nov 21, 2017 12:58 AM

@wissox Charles Woodson in 1997 seems to be the only primarily defensive player to win. He was a CB, but even then he occasionally played at WR and also returned punts. (He beat Peyton for the Award. Go Meeeeeechigan!)

But I am shocked you think no fullback has won. Perhaps a Badger before Ron Dane? Two others did, too, the last being Steve Owens in 1969.

I was surprised that no offensive or defensive lineman has ever won.

@dylans That was my fee-free contrib to ESPN on how to do it in the same article. The bracket were for them to link to the game recap. They should do some work. I never said that should rewrite it to look smart.

I didn't really mind them not updating it. I just thought it was stupid for them to display the outdated article so prominently. It is not like our Board--here, posts are chronological. If your prediction was proven wrong, you wouldn't post it again, which would be the equivalent of ESPN continuing to highlight their wrong article. That converts wrong to dumb.

@BeddieKU23 "Young"=Secret Weapon

@justanotherfan And he is only a sophomore. Some require more development than others. Being thrown into the mix prematurely because of injuries is not really the same thing and can actually work against some players because it changes what role they are practicing to fill. Being undersized at the 4/5 with no other big playing inside is not Mitch's fault!

@nuleafjhawk Agreed. I can see refusing after a game if the other team has been cheap-shotting or acting like jerks--but before the game is a ritual designed to help players adhere to the rules of gentlemanliness and sportsmanship. Obviously, not shaking hands for KU was a precursor. Yay, team, make me proud.

Ironic article this morning for you Espin fans. This is the second article on ESPN's home page for mens' basketball this morning. It is an homage to the wonderful NW team bouncing back from an unexpected home loss (to Creighton) by beating perennial powerhouse La Salle on Saturday.

The article goes on to mention how they will likely beat TTU.

ESPN, always highlighting their own predictions over the actual results!

@wissox: Sorry, I think your eligibility in Div I or II is up unless you are much more recently graduated than I think. 6 years, I believe, from when you first entered college or when you turn 25. Something like that.

They might grant a waiver for military service. Not sure if teaching in Baton Rouge counts for that, even if it was service in a foreign land for a Wisc Yankee.

@Crimsonorblue22 Nothing in the news anywhere I could find, but that is an interesting possibility not likely to cause headlines for sure. Is he Mormon? I know other religions send kids on mission trips, but LDS missions for college kids tend to be between their soph and jr years. Don't have a clue. Hope he is happy in his anonymity--and maybe that was why he left. The shystache.

Smart's heir apparent. β€’ Nov 20, 2017 05:25 AM

@approxinfinity Thanks. What is weird is every article out there about this has that same tweet. In the ESPN highlight video, the guy who got called for the foul (Chris Thomas) immediately turns and scurries back to his bench with his hands low. No gesture of disbelief, no look at the ref, nothing to indicate he was confused by why he'd gotten called. I agree--Allen defintely sold it. He made one of two FTs, and was pulled from the game a few seconds later, but started the second half. If Allen didn't get hit, no one tried to say so during the game. Only after that tweet.

Note to @wissox: just felt like doing only one paragraph. Better for ranting!

Some Misc Basketball β€’ Nov 20, 2017 04:02 AM

@Gorilla72 Good question. College Basketball Reference site entry for him ends with last year at Wm & Mary. The "News" tab has as its last entry an item about him leaving KU this summer. So he must have left bb. Maybe, since he graduated, he got a job.

@JayHawkFanToo I think they can suspend an athlete for not cooperating.

@JayhawkFanToo I will give you a dollar if you can show me where I said that. Incidentally, I looked all over the internet and found lots of sites, too, saying exactly what you say.
