@benshawks08 Yes, I think I do know! I hope you can get them up here for a big game soon. I'm sure it's something they'll always remember.
A game at Allen Fieldhouse is really something spectacular - even if you're not a KU fan. Here's what I mean: Many years ago (2011- I googled it) I had two tickets to KU v Ohio State. We were ranked #13 and Ohio State was #2. My wife and I were friends with a gal whose husband was a big Buckeye fan. For some reason I still can't fathom, I asked him to go to the game. I pick him up at his house and he's decked out head to toe in Red/Gray. He didn't even have the car door shut and he was running his mouth about how bad they were going to kick our butts.
So, I endured the 2 1/2 hour drive to Lawrence and we got there 2-3 hours early. We toured the whole place, saw everything there was to see- all the trophies, etc. Then we get into the fieldhouse and there's the usual pre-game festivities. The chants, the videos, all the hoopla. I'd noticed for some time that he was getting quieter and running his mouth less. Just before tip-off he told me " This place is unbelievable - I have goose bumps - Ohio State doesn't have ANYTHING like this ".
We could have gone home right then and I would have been happy. Fortunately we won.
@BShark it's the best way to screw up the day for everyone involved.
@dylans "Gonna be fun…until KU goes up 20."
At the 5 minute mark of the first half...
@justanotherfan Welcome back. I'm very glad to hear that your family health matters are all OK. I "need to breathe" sometimes too. I find myself getting way too worked up about what anonymous people say and think. I don't think I get that worked up in "real life", so I sure as heck shouldn't do it here. Maybe we all ought to take a sabbatical once in a while and, like you, reflect on what's really important.
The lyrics don't pertain, but the title.....
Just a peeve of mine - why are we getting all these stupid start times? 11:00 am, 12:30 pm, 1:00 pm...
Wouldn't it be logical, if you're ranked in the top 5 or 10, to schedule games that are going to be seen by more people? Like 6, 7 or 8 Central Time?
Hey - let's get a convoy to the game this weekend:
Well, we rolled up Interstate 70
Like a rocket sled on rails.
We tore up all of our stat sheets,
And left 'em settin' on the scales.
By the time we hit ManCrappy town,
Them bears was a-gettin' smart:
They'd brought up some reinforcements
From the Kansas National Guard.
There's armored cars, and tanks, and jeeps,
And rigs of ev'ry size.
Yeah, them chicken coops was full'a bears
And choppers filled the skies.
Well, we shot the line and we went for broke
With a thousand screamin' trucks
An' eleven long-haired Friends of Jesus
In a crimson and blue micro-bus.
Well, we laid a strip for the Bramlage shore
And prepared to cross the line
I could see the court was lined with cats
But I didn't have a dog-goned dime.
I says, "dylans, this here's nuleafjhawk
.
"We just ain't a-gonna pay no toll."
So we crashed the gate doing ninety-eight
I says "Let them truckers roll, 10-4."
@drgnslayr I hope it's a problem we have to worry about.
@Crimsonorblue22 I don't know about metal detectors, but they do have cow patty detectors at every exit gate. That is a sacred commodity in Manhattan and it is not to be taken out of the Octagon of Dumb.
And they have cattle prods if anything starts to get out of hand.
@rockchalkwyo Their little feelings are still hurted.
@wrwlumpy Generally speaking, KSU fans are too dumb to come up with something intelligent or funny, so they have to resort to the FU chant.
That's one reason that I like Brian Regan and Jim Gaffigan so much - they're very funny without overt foul language. Anybody can get a laugh with a string of four letter words.
KSU gets a laugh by their play and their fan base.
@Crimsonorblue22 Yep! Give them something to talk about!
The Octagon of Dumb is more like a movie theater than a gym. A movie theater where they show really crappy, boring movies.
I hope we win 114 - 36 with the last play of the game being a 50' lob to Doke for a two handed jam that shatters the backboard. Then Doke goes to the other end of the court and hangs on the rim.
@benshawks08 You may as well include every team in the whole NCAA Tournament - they ALL have the hardest bracket.
@benshawks08 Doke is a PRIME example of why players should stay four years. He has worked his butt off and made incredible strides in all facets of his game. He is adored by the whole Jayhawk nation.
My heart already breaks for Dotson. When he leaves next year he will be remembered fondly and held in high esteem, but I for one will always wonder how incredible he would have been by the time he was a senior.
I know I'm in the minority, but I don't buy into the theory that they can't wait until graduation to start cashing the big checks.
@Marco I kind of feel like Doke will dominate the tournament(s).
@StLJhawk ok,you know where I live so stop with all the Paradise (literally! ) talk. Lol.
I would have bet $1,000,000 at the beginning of the season that Doke would never shoot 7/8 from the FT line.
Could not be happier for him.
@Crimsonorblue22 Thank you for all the great info. I must say I'm surprised.
@bskeet Never been there, but now I'm curious.
@Crimsonorblue22 I'd be willing to bet you could find some good samaritan outside the Fieldhouse willing to sell tickets at a fair price. Wink, wink...
@Texas-Hawk-10 I'd love to see some stats (they probably don't exist) on how that strategy works out across all teams.
My feeble brain says that if you have a 3 point lead and 5 seconds left, it makes sense to foul. There has to be perfect execution in a lot of areas for that team to make and miss one free throw, get the rebound and then make the winning basket
Literally almost anyone on the court can make s long 3 pointer
@Crimsonorblue22 If I may ask, why aren't you going?
@StLJhawk You're fortunate to live somewhere that you really enjoy! All the places that I can think of - mainly St Barth's in the Caribbean - are slightly out of my pay grade.
Since you brought up E. St. Louis - for some reason that I'll never understand, my sister in law and her husband thought it was necessary to take us to a place called Crown Candy in St Louis last year. It was in a pretty funky part of town, but then we really got to take the tour after we left there. O. M. G. There are not many things in this world that really scare me - but East St Louis did. It's a bad place. Bad.
I saw a documentary about St Louis a while back. It said that the population was over 800,000 back in the 60's, but today it's just a little over 300,000. There are empty buildings everywhere. It's really kind of sad.
@StLJhawk I lived in Houston as well - for about 9 years in the early 80's. I don't remember why we were in Port Arthur area, but for some reason I thought it would be a good idea to check it out. I was wrong. If memory serves me (and it probably doesn't) every window on every building was barred. Residential and Commercial. We went through town and got to the ocean and the first thing we saw was a giant wooden sign with every warning known to mankind printed on it.
" DANGER - Deadly Currents. Swim at your own risk. Look out for Alligators. Mosquitos carry Malaria. Watch for hypodermic syringes on beach"
OH Yes - as you mentioned, the refineries were a real treat as well.
We didn't even get out of the car. I got out of Port Arthur as fast as I could and don't have any plans on returning soon.
@StLJhawk Man, you gave me a start there. I'm just glad I didn't say St Louis....
@kjayhawks Yes, Broadway and 9th is probably not the premium real estate destination in town, unless you want to walk to the mall very quickly. As you and others have pointed out, there are really good and really bad neighborhoods in most towns.
Unless you live in Port Arthur, Tx - then it's all bad. (Lord, please don't let anyone here live in Port Arthur.....)
This should not have been an afterthought, but I wanted to tell you that I appreciate you calling me out and defending your city in a manner that didn't include cussing and yelling and name calling. I'll be the first to admit that I say stupid things sometimes. Tell me so. Say - hey nuleaf - that was stupid. ( I'm kind of talking to other posters here, because that's basically what you did)....I can deal with that. I appreciate you handling a dispute, or difference of opinion like an adult.
There's no sarcasm font here. Thank you.
@mayjay I've never been to South Carolina, my preconceived notion is that it's a neat place. My daughter lives a little north of there - in Wilmington, NC. and loves it.
I wonder if Ol Roy is starting to think that Chapel Hill is kind of a dump? Or maybe Chapel Hill is starting to think that about him!
@mayjay Lol - your graciousness is much appreciated.
@HawkChamp LOL. OK, I throw in the towel.
I just have a problem with word vomit. Sometimes words just come out of my mouth with no input from my brain. I honestly don't mean to be rude, I guess it's just how I'm wired.
Take me with a grain or two of salt please.
@HawkChamp Thank you, I'm familiar with the "edit" function. Also with the "Discard" function, as I have used both prolifically trying to respond to you and keep things civil. As far as "vile hatred" goes, you and I have a vastly different idea of what that means. I didn't say one time that I hated Wichita. It ain't my favorite place. That doesn't stop me from going there. In fact, we spent a fair amount of time and money in your fair city this past Saturday. My wife was shopping at Dillard's (while I was watching the KU game on my phone) and then we spent more money at the At Home Store, or whatever it's called.
After we shopped in Wichita for a good part of the morning and early afternoon, we headed south. When we came back in the evening, we were going through Wichita on 135 and when we came upon the "canal' that runs through town we both about threw up from the smell. One of the reasons I don't like Wichita.
BTW - I live in Salina. Feel free to say whatever you want about it. I probably won't disagree.
@benshawks08 I'll take "right" by default! I agree that overtime would not have been a happy time for us.
@Crimsonorblue22 Oh yes, my math skills need help. Along with all of my other skills.
@drgnslayr Apparently I don't know anything about basketball. Is there a reason, that with a 3 point lead and ....5 seconds to go, we didn't foul someone?
That three point shot was literally one inch from beating us.
@HawkChamp I guess you didn't read the part where i already apologized. It was just to emphasize how much i disliked WSU. Didn't mean anything by it.
@Crimsonorblue22 well, could be them or ksu!
@Crimsonorblue22 depends on how many Livestock shows and Rodeos are in town that day.
@wissox welcome back, jaybate!
@bskeet Dude! That's the what was in my head all day yesterday, but I couldn't figure out how to make my point. The recruiting part of it! Scott Drew is a master recruiter- among the very best.
I've been on this site for a long time now and it's a much bigger part of my day than it probably should be.
I don't ever intentionally try to be mean, rude or offensive and if I am, please call me out on it and I will apologize immediately. But please don't criticize an opinion, mine or anyone else's.
I let the Drew thing cause too much friction today and I'm sorry about that. It's an argument that can't be won. Listen to a couple of old farts argue about Ford and Chevy. Budweiser or Coors. Republican or Democrat. It's just each person's opinion. And they're both right.
Anyway, sorry to those I offended. Here's to a KU victory in Wacko tomorrow. RCJH
Does anyone remember these guys? They were some extremely talented athletes and players. Look at the dates - a lot of them played together at Baylor on the same team. You get my point. I'm sorry I got everyone all out of joint today.
CURRENT BAYLOR BEARS IN THE NBA
Quincy Acy (2008-12)
Johnathan Motley (2014-17)
Royce O'Neale (2013-15)
Taurean Prince (2012-16)
Ekpe Udoh (2009-10)
FORMER BAYLOR BEARS IN THE NBA
Pierre Jackson (2011-13)
Cory Jefferson (2009-14)
@Texas-Hawk-10 It's really not. It could be saying they're OK. They decent. Maybe I should have said "Great" instead of "Good". Would we be having this conversation now if I had done that? Is anyone willing to step out into the abyss and say he's a Great coach?
@jayballer73 Just for the record - Bill Self will tell you that the team goal every year is to win the Big 12 Conference. He must be a "settler". And I really don't think anywhere in all of this mess that i've called Drew a "bad" coach. Maybe I did - I don't remember. But I DID say that he's not a good coach. So good and bad is evidently a judgement call. Because I don't think he's a good coach.
@jayballer73 I must be that slow. I don't understand any of your jibberish. How in the world did you come up with "so you're a guy that settles?" What is that? Where did it come from?
If I was a guy that settles, I'd be super duper happy with a Scott Drew .603 No Conference Championship, No Final Fours kind of coach.
I'm the exact opposite of a guy that settles. You can do better.
@Marco Me too! But if, God forbid, Bill Self ..........i don't know - keeled over or picked up and headed for Madagascar today - would you want Scott Drew as your coach? That's ALL I'm saying.
@jayballer73 When Drew has FOURTEEN CONSECUTIVE BIG 12 CHAMPIONSHIPS I will consider your point
@Marco It doesn't matter. If you like him, great. I don't - that should be great too. I mean, we could all have this debate about Bruce Weber - in my opinion a so-so coach (at best) but since he has a Big 12 Conference Championship under his belt, some folks might think he's a great coach.
