Chiefs season long game thread • Dec 25, 2023 09:01 PM

Jeez. What’s up with the Chiefs this year. Crazy. They look like they have zero juice in em.

If I weren’t a Chiefs fan, I’d be wondering if Mahomes was in debt to a Vegas crime mob. Some of his multiple turnovers were outright questionable.

Eff da Raidas!

I was refreshing my memory on Elmarko's recruiting notes. Even Self has said he's learning a new position, so patience required. The big question is why did we recruit a highly ranked PG and are asking him to play SG when we know Juan will be here a bit longer? The first sentence seems appropriate to my thinking on his game so far.

"Jackson needs the ball in his hands to be at his best, both because opposing help-side defenders will be able to help off him and because he will have to learn how to play without the ball after having been the focal point of every offense he’s been in to this point."

KU vs the smart people game chat • Dec 23, 2023 08:04 AM

And about that Yale game…

Watching post game now. Juan is impressive in his interview. Very upfront about his play. Like that.

Before the game started I was thinking a 15-18 point win. boy howdy it sure didn’t seem like it was gonna get there! Ha.

Gotta give it up for McCullar. He’s been great.

Hoping Elmarko is working thru his growing pains. He does look quick on the ball. Hard to teach that.

Yale looked pretty solid.

Anyone watching Fargo? This seasons been good.

Fargo has been great this season. It’s competing for the best season in the series so far. Juno Temple has been outstanding! Very outstanding. One of the best characters the series has had.

On the other hand, two very poor casting choices are holding the show back from exceptional — Jon Hamm and Jennifer Jason Leigh. Ugh. JJL just seems sooo out of place and miscast. I like Hamm, but he doesn’t have that quirk factor the show is known for.

But, very much enjoying the season.

Furphy out for Friday's game vs Yale • Dec 19, 2023 05:14 PM

Am I crazy or did it seem like Elmarko had more time on the ball vs Indiana?

I’d like to see more of that, please.

May as well give Timberlake plenty of time to find his way.

Chiefs season long game thread • Dec 18, 2023 10:22 PM

Well there ya go. One WR question answered: Skyy Moore to IR list.

Will they elevate Justyn Ross, or call in some new blood?

Chiefs season long game thread • Dec 18, 2023 06:42 PM

Ha, Arrowhead Pride dogging on the receivers too.

The Chiefs can’t keep putting receivers Marquez Valdes Scantling, Skyy Moore, and Kadarius Toney on the field and expect positive things to happen. It’s madness.

Couldn’t just about any combination of players muster the 22 combined yards of offense these guys gave us on Sunday?

We have 14 games of experiential data. It says that when these guys are on the field, negative things happen. If we replaced Valdes-Scantling, Toney and Moore with practice squad receivers Cornell Powell, Montrell Washington and Daniel Arias, would there actually be any drop-off in production? Or would it be just a drop-off in turnovers?

At some point, you have to amputate the gangrenous leg, so that it doesn’t infect the entire body.

Chiefs season long game thread • Dec 18, 2023 07:42 AM

Hey, always nice to win a roadie! Wins are mandatory for the Chiefs at this point to be in good playoff standing.

And Wow. Mahomes is sure starting to lose some poise, huh. Hard to believe that Veach has stuck to his guns and stood pat on receiver help. Shocking really. If schmucks like me can see we are hurtin badly and ruining a Super Bowl window with a HOF QB…cmon, man!

The problem is that I half like and half don’t like Toney. He’s hard nosed as hell once he actually catches the ball, but that seems to be the hard part. Can we just make him a RB? :)

CEH is not effing around! Love it. Bulldozer.

Travis is starting to show his age I think. That sucks :(

Keep them wins comin, Chiefs!

Yikes, I dunno how we’re losing to this team. Seems like a very winnable game.

Just like the Chargers almost did to their coach the other day, can we fire Timberlake at halftime? Just leave him in Hoosierville? McDowell gets ALL his minutes. Please.

I do wonder when Self is gonna call it on the Timberlake minutes. I understand why his leash is so long because this team desperately needs shooting but at some point you may need to cut your losses. He's an absolute turnstile on the defensive end

The problem is really that Self cannot call it on Timberlake minutes. We need him.

How's everyone feeling about this team after 10 games?

On target, exceeding expectations, below expectations?

Share your thoughts, we have a long week until Saturday's game in Assembly Hall.

I'd say we're on target-ish. To speak the unspoken: Losing Arterio was a huge blow.

Agree with @BeddieKU23 on the scrambling to adjust mode. He was a small with quickness and ability. We really only have young Elmarko to replace that kinda skill. So, there are some growing pains in the works. Timberlake in theory has a different skill set.

With Morris, we would not all be complaining that Harris is exhausted and playing too many minutes. Hoping Elmarko can get more time on the ball. That will help east the load (but will Self do it??). But, that brings either Furphy or Timberlake to the floor, and neither has that kinda quickness to defend smalls. Liability at times. Mismatch at other times in our favor.

Hunter has been da man. Other than his slightly off offensive game vs. Mizzou, stud (as Self would say).

We will win some games with Hunter, we will lose some games because we struggle to hit 3s and don't have enough ball handling. I have not followed the offseason upgrades to other Big 12 teams, but i would guess another 5 loss conference record is not out of the question.

I have the same feeling about both the Jayhawks and Chiefs this year: title aspirations seem limited.

Well, here we are with the Chiefs.

Injuries sure didn’t help today.

I just don’t have the same faith in the team. That feeling they could pull off crazy shit just ain’t there anymore.

Weirdness: you could argue they have one of the top defenses in the AFC. Second fewest points against so far (I think). The offense in points scored is middle of the pack-ish. An odd turnaround!

Their remaining scheduled isn’t brutal. So, I think the playoffs are in reach, but they’ve brought themselves back to the pack. And it’s a crowded pack. Only a one game lead in the West?

Not looking like a Super Bowl team at the moment.

Delayed by the Browns. Great.
This feels like a late KU basketball game on ESPN, awaiting the LA Tech womens game to end.

KC is a slight favorite today. But the Bills have some weird wins and losses this year.

So, I got no clue how to predict this one given the Chiefs glut of injuries.

But, Bolton is back.

That’s why ya play em, I suppose.

After the Eagles game, I thought the Chiefs could run the table. Softish schedule other than the Bills and Bengals, who have their own problems.

@dylans I’m not smart enough to follow the cash flow by the GM and how that affects the comings and goings. But, your explanation makes sense. The Chiefs put it all on the shoulders of Mahomes and Kelce. They need more help.

@rockchalkjayhawk If it makes you feel better the team that just got the biggest win of their year only got to hear about terrible reffing in the post game on tv. Love is only under contract for the rest of the year, so they’ve got to navigate that this offseason. I am glad they got this moment. Now let’s hope the Chiefs figure out their WRs after Rice!

I am totally blowing off steam here as i just finished watching, so excuse my anger!

Ha. maybe an iota better about the post game. I'll have to check that out. I don't blame the refs entirely for the loss. YES, that massive missed call was hugely significant. But, the Chiefs just don't look very good right now.

And yes, since the preseason i've been moaning about WRs, or the lack of. It's THE issue this year. So our only possible play to a WR tonight was essentially a screen to Rice???? Fer effs sake!

That's bad, folks. This season, as it sinks, can be blamed entirely on the GM.

Chiefs season long game thread • Dec 04, 2023 05:07 AM

Holy crap. That was a comedy show. I don’t even know where to start! Wow.

Sooo many bad calls. Play calls and ref calls. So many. What on earth was that third down with seconds left on the clock where PM chucked it out of bounds??? Just a wasted chance to score! Incredible.

And the injuries! What, we lost five guys before the half?

That was comically bad on so many levels. Green Bay! Green Bay!

I’m so steamed I can’t even put a thought together. Grrr.

Not looking good for the Chiefs.

Wisconsin currently bitch slapping Marquette.

Wisconsin does not look overly athletic.

Wondering if the KU-MU game was just a weird one off? How the hell…confused.

Hey, how’s about that! That was an amazing game to watch as a fan. High energy and entertaining,

And, that was one of our best defensive showings in a long while. Why can’t we do that more often? Even Hunter was great on D! Very pleased to see that kinda effort.

The Self bench belt tightening has begun early this season. I saw that coming tonight. But cmon, we need way more than six guys to play minutes, coach! Got us a win though, huh.

Here’s the thing about Elmarko…he still has shown us virtually nothing of his skills or potential on the court, but I think these minutes are helping him. He seemed to be more aggressive tonight at least. Maybe he’ll take another step up the ladder by January.

So happy for KJ! Dunk city.

Here’s the thing about Furphy…he’s obviously got a smooth stroke. He’s looking more comfortable shooting the ball. More minutes! To me he’s a true wing or 3/4. Not a two guard at all. So, It’s becoming very obvious despite my love for Furphy that he cannot switch onto smaller, faster guards. He smothers them once in a blue moon, but they mostly blow by him. I don’t love him less for that, but I dunno how you protect him with all our switching.

Did Jamari get lost on his way to the Fieldhouse??? Shocked that Self didn’t put him on that Newton dude for a few minutes at least to cool his roll. And that was one helluva roll. I don’t understand these wimpy coaches these days. Send in Jamari or some bench scrub to knock him on his arse! Throw him off his game. Do any of the Detroit Bad Boys have eligibility left? :)

That really was a great game. Happy we won. Rock Chalk!

@rockchalkjayhawk

Clingan is more athletic then Hunter at 7'2 and has better lateral movement as well. He can run the floor on the fast break at times as well so it's something to watch. He's also a threat defensively at the rim. Tough matchup for both our bigs tonight

That was a good matchup of talented bigs. I thought that block was legit by Hunter, yet the whistle blew.

@BeddieKU23 said in BIG GAME!! The Students Are There, We Should Talk:

@rockchalkjayhawk

They have a very good 7 footer so someone to legitimately give Hunter a hard time down low. They brought back a few other key starters from the title team, added a guard transfer from Rutgers that has fit well and is scoring for them. They play hard, they know what they are doing and I don't see too many weaknesses from them considering all the talent that did leave from that title squad. They also have a very good freshman that he has been hurt but apparently will return tonight and he's a projected lottery pick so far.

All to say, they have an equal to better roster with legitimate NBA talent at guard and in the post. It's a tough matchup

Thanks for the scoop @BeddieKU23

If there's another 7 footer on the floor, some of the quickness concerns go out the door for me. whew. i hope.

I stopped watching the NCAAs last season after KU lost. So, didn’t catch UConn at all.

I recall being surprised they won the title though.

That being said, I don’t know their strengths and weaknesses. So far y’all don’t seem optimistic about our chances. What do they do well? Small team, big team?

I give us a fighting most nights vs anybody.

I think poor Nick gets beat up more so than the freshmen because he is a sixth year player — who shot 40+ percent from deep his last two years at Towson. So, he came with experience and some expectation of instant success — more so than the freshmen.

He’s shooting 29% at the moment, and has mostly been burnt toast on defense.

I think we all want him to succeed. He’d better start soon, or Jamari will get all his minutes.

What makes Jamari a good basketball player? • Nov 24, 2023 06:52 PM

I like Jamari’s game so far. He seems like he fits in already. Smart, athletic, has some hustle. Even if he doesn’t know what he’s supposed to do fully, he’ll at least put some kinda effort in to make something happen. That’s a great quality.

He generally knows where to be on the floor. His one glaring learning moment so far was during the Kentucky game late. He was brought in to specifically to play defense, but twice got stuck trying to double or was just in the wrong spot on the floor, had to sprint over to cover open shooters. That’s just being young.

And he seems to have all the basic skills. Jamari in year three will be a fantastic piece of the puzzle.

MAUI WOWIE TOURNAMENT • Nov 23, 2023 06:23 AM

Hey, nice win Hawks!

Tennessee looked like a quality team.

I see that Purdue beat Marquette. I’m honestly very surprised. I watched them the other day and they looked unathletic and slow. How the hell did they beat Marquette??? Oh well.

My Question Now • Nov 23, 2023 06:10 AM

Well, we pretty much got hosed with our starting two guard spot this season. Y’all know why.

The former player would have been a difference maker with speed and quickness on defense.

So, we are struggling to make up for that with inexperienced players. Elmarko seems like he has the zip to eventually fill that role.

But for the moment I’m totally in Team Jamari camp. I don’t think he’s got the quickness that Elmarko will show at some point, but he’s solid all around, can guard a few spots on the floor.

Timberlake gets mop up minutes.

Them two are constantly on the TV. Way too many commercials.

Ha, that’s what I get not chatting during Games. Missed some good stuff. I think there were more blocks on this board than Marquette steals tonight! :)

Fugly. The only way I can think to describe that game. We looked so completely unathletic. How can that be? I thought Self has been making that a point of emphasis recently -- getting more athletes.

Hats off to Marquette and their douche of a %-$#@ coach for a brilliant game plan. Well executed. (Pains me to say it, but it’s true)

I didn’t think it possible, but even Dajuan couldn’t keep up.

Some positives tonight. Some.

— the soon to benched Timberlake actually made a three!

— love me some Jamari. Give him all the backup minutes, please. At least he looks like he can defend, keep up.

— Furphy had a few bright spots. Like that. Way too big and slow to guard that No 22 when he got switched, but that’s excusable. Made a shot. A quick cut and layup. Is the Light coming on?

And too many duds to count.

— Shocked at Dajuan’s performance tonight.

— Shocked that Self could not find a solution to whatever the hell they did to stifle us. Really shocked.

— Don’t you think a couple of made 3s would have freed up some space inside? Needed some shot makers.

— The old Self woulda kicked Shaka’s ass. Wasn’t even red faced. Mild reaction.

— %@#$ Shaka!

I'm with you @approxinfinity on GGG. He needed to go. My guess is that he won't make it to the next World Cup.

After the Dest meltdown, I happened upon an older video interview with Dest. It really sounded like his mental health was not stable. Not crazy, but not handling the pressure of being a player well.

Anyone else feel this way? • Nov 21, 2023 08:22 PM

I think of some of this lack of interest is a normal part of aging. I'm speaking for myself, but I know as i get older, the less i care about watching sports in general. I dunno how old the rest of you guys and girls are, but I think it's natural.

I find myself only really wanting to watch teams i'm dedicated to -- Jayhawks, Chiefs, etc.

I can't say i have the enthusiasm i've had in the past for the Jayhawks with all these changes and come and go players. It was definitely better when we had four year guys. You get to know em, see their personalities, know their strengths and weaknesses, see em get better over time.

It's different now for sure. I don't love it, but i'll still watch.

Dros and penalties have been a major issue all season long.

Teams are double/triple teaming Kelce and Chiefs WRs still cannot get open, and when they do get open, they drop the ball.

MVS has been a major disappointment, I have watched the open TD play now several times and still SMH.

I’m kinda torn on the MVS drop. At first glance I thought Mahomes overthrew him. Replays showed it was a good throw, catchable. But MVS really had to accelerate, put on the jets to catch up with the pass. So, wish he would have caught it. Not easy though.

Can we just cut Watson today? A giant embarrassment.
