I think KU, Bradley, Bucknell, UTEP, VCU, Rhode Island, Virginia, Oregon, UNI and Auburn should break away and start their own conference.

Also, Strong Hall feels VERY good theyâll land in either the B1G or ACC. If I were a betting man, Iâd put a couple bucks on the ACC. But scenarios definitely exist for both depending on TV deals.
Read yesterday that the AAC (American Athletic) was interested in inviting the remaining 8 Big 12 teams. Any credence to that or is everyone just throwing out stuff to get some press?

Thanks, Farmer. Thatâs very helpful. I guess Iâm old school (maybe just old) and hate to see traditional rivalries die and small, regional conferences turn in to nationwide behemoths. The only constant may be change but I donât have to like it. Now get off my lawn!
Serious question: So how does this work? A school can just up and leave a conference when the mood strikes? Who is stirring the pot and why canât the rest of the schools tell OU and TX to pound sand?
Seems like lesser schools such as KSU that stand to lose status in a deal like this would have some say or recourse if they are hurt financially by realignment. Doesnât seem right or fair.
Great list. If I recall, the Wiggins game was a loss despite his performance. Were the other games all wins?
Also would like to know which were home games, away games or neutral court games. I think Wiggins and EJs (#1 & #2) were away, correct?
I'm curious to see how mentally tough this team is. I feel like the past few seasons we've been a bit fragile when punched in the mouth. Athleticism seems to trump everything, but I want to see what kind of fire and mental fortitude these guys possess when the dogfight is in full swing. I don't know as much about these guys as @BShark and others, but I sense we have a few tough hombres on this team.
@Texas-Hawk-10 said in NCAA loses more power... again...:
Thatâs not money thatâs going to influence anyone to stay an extra year.
Maybe not, but that's certainly money that might influence someone to go to Miami over another school. Not everyone is likeable and marketable. Not everyone is cream-of-the-crop talent-wise or the "loveable loser" that endears someone to the public at large. Someone who would normally fall through the NIL cracks is now guaranteed to get a shot at some cash. I think that's a pretty big deal.
Also, this is notable because it's the first instance (as far as I know) of a company taking an entire team under its wing. In my opinion that will certainly turn some heads in the recruiting game.
I'm not smart enough to be able to wrap my brain around all the particulars of the NIL thing and I haven't had the time to study any of it, but my gut tells me this is going to spiral out of control very quickly and there are going to be lots of unintended consequences.

Bingo! We totally got into OUs heads at halftime. They were over-inflated from Tubbs and his jackass ego.
Didnât hurt that we made everything from the field in the first half. It has been a looong time since I watched that game but I donât think we missed a shot in the first half until late and ended up at something like 83% from the field at the break.
Also remember Milt Newtonâs sweet reverse layup and slapping his hand at the championship parade. One of the only times I skipped school to speed to Mass Ave. to take part. Would never be able to get that close to the players during todayâs celebrations. Fun times.

Almost everyone remembers Marioâs shot, but true fans appreciate Sherron as having made it possible with magic ball-handling (avoiding being fouled) and that beautiful pass while falling down. But his corner falling-out-of-bounds pass leading to his 3 ptr a couple seconds later was crucial to the comeback, too!
I thought it then and after watching the video this morning after many years my opinion hasn't changed: when that 3-pointer from Sherron left his hand I will swear to my dying day that the shot was off. It looked like it was destined to carom off the heel for a long rebound.
It could be a trick of the light or the camera angle, but I believe someone or something steered that ball into the hoop.

100% shooting from beyond the arc last season!
@Texas-Hawk-10 said in Remy to Kansas:
Youâre contradicting yourself with your own statements saying Dave isnât aggressive, yet has a high motor.
I don't think having a high motor necessarily implies aggressiveness. How many times last year did we pan Dave for his middling rebound numbers or his proclivity to shoot a 12-15 ft. jumper instead of driving to the bucket or his inability to schedule a "block party" ala Doke?
That said, I think there are reasons Dave may not have been as aggressive as he could have been. As you said, last year's team didn't have the personnel to carve out space for Dave to operate as well as he may be able to do with next year's squad, which I agree is being assembled to help unclog the lane.
I think too that Dave was obscured by the shadow of Doke for the early part of last year, trying to hold himself up to unrealistic expectations and trying to be what he isn't. Towards the latter part of the season you could almost see him emerging from Doke's massive shadow and playing to his strengths. He also became pretty competent at quickly recognizing double teams and passing out of them. Next year, I think we'll make people pay big time for using that tactic, which should allow Dave's more aggressive side to shine.
I think the jury is still out on how aggressive Dave can be, but I wouldn't conflate a high motor with being aggressive.

Speaking of making noise, some of these guys have yet to experience the full-throated roar of Allen Field House at capacity. I'm hoping we are in a position to allow 16,300 screaming fans into the building come fall. Will certainly impact play in a big way.

@Kcmatt7 said in Hartford goes from D1 to D3 After Making the Tournament:
@BShark Without knowing anything about the situation, my guess is that they are losing money on athletics at the D1 level.
The switch to D3 means players wonât get free tuition anymore. Which will probably make the athletics program a bit more profitable. (Always sort of blows my mind how D3 schools even get people to come play, but they doâŚ)
Years ago, I had a buddy who went to a really small college up in Wisconsin. When he came back for Christmas vacation he proceeded to tell me he made the football team as a third string QB. Great, except for the fact the most football he had played previously was in neighborhood pick up games after school and he had never shown any real ability to throw the ball too far or too accurately. Still one of the great mysteries.
Long story short, I suppose kids go to D3 just to play sports they love at a college level. Many of them are not, I assume, good enough to earn athletic scholarships at bigger schools but still want to participate somehow.
Looking back, I probably should have gone that route. Being just over 6-feet tall and able to dunk a tennis ball with no blocking ability, I could have made a good backup center for someone.
@Texas-Hawk-10 said in Lance Leipold meets with Jayhawks shortly after arriving in Lawrence:
Itâs not walking on eggshells though. The decision was hire and outside coach without any competition from other schools after spring practice and basically make spring practice meaningless because of a new offensive and defensive system to install this summer and lose quite a few players. Or give Jones an interim year to keep the foundational pieces Miles brought in on board and risk not getting Leipold or Monken in December and having a weak 2022 class because of the uncertainty of coaching situation.
Either decision came with its own set of pros and cons and Goff made his decision now. Goff went with the mentality that Leipolay not have been an option in December if Buffalo had another great season as he probably wouldâve been catching interest from bigger programs. Monken probably wouldâve still been a viable option.
Leipold has the mentality and track record to indicate he should be able to turn KU around so hopefully it ends up working out. This year is definitely going to suck though and Goff knows this which is probably why Leipold got a 6 year deal instead of 5 like normal because this is basically a throwaway year as far as judging progress and this is more about installing systems and establishing the foundation for Leipoldâs tenure here.
I think we're in agreement.
I guess what I mean by "walking on eggshells" is that I don't want to do with football what we just did with basketball, which is to put everything else on hold for the sake of one recruit or two and miss out on some kids that could have helped us and really wanted to play for the crimson and blue.
Look what happened with TyTy. 1500 kids in the portal and we sit on our hands for two weeks waiting for a decision that does not go our way, missing out on some quality guards, etc. that would have benefitted us more than chasing a ghost.
I am glad we jumped at Leipold now when he is available if that is our guy rather than wait and risk missing out just to satisfy a of a couple recruits. I want an AD and coach who have a very clear vision of what they want to accomplish and are not going to compromise that vision because we desperately want to hold on to someone who really doesn't want to be here when all is said and done.
The line tends to be that kids play for coaches and not for the school. While it would be nice for kids to choose KU because it is KU, we were bound to lose some kids no matter who we hired. That said, I'm sure there will be many kids who will want to run through walls for Leipold and I'm looking forward to seeing the types of players he can bring in.
@FarmerJayhawk said in Lance Leipold meets with Jayhawks shortly after arriving in Lawrence:
Which wouldâve just delayed it a year.
Exactly. I'd prefer not walking on eggshells for appeasement. Anyone who doesn't want to be here should just leave now as painful as it may be.

Iâm happy with the choice. I always wonder why a decent coach would take the KU job, but then I remember that theyâll get paid millions even if they donât win a game.
True. But with our dismal W/L record over the past few decades, a coach has a better chance of getting a statue erected in their honor coaching at KU than at any other school. Averaging about 4 wins per season is about all it would take. And if it doesn't happen, well, you still have the money.

Just loved his quiet confidence, his smile, his overall demeanor and the fact he was a project and an underdog to get to the league.
I liked Josh Jackson a lot because of that same cool, laid back demeanor too. Not to mention his retro vibe.
@drgnslayr said in Coach Howard:
I think to be a good recruiter you need to be more ears than mouth. Listen to the player and his family. Some are focused on making sure their son is in a family-like environment that is wholesome and the playerâs family is kept totally in the loop, or even becoming part of the loop. Weâve even seen playerâs move family to Lawrence.
For others it is all about what situation will best get the player into the league⌠sometimes⌠itâs about HOW FAST can the player get to the league! For others⌠who will be develop the player most while in college⌠then they look at strength coaching, player development, etc.
Some put the most focus on PT. Some on how well they will play with the team being assembled. Some know another player or two and are attracted to have a friend with them. Some decide for a team or coach who has shown the most interest as they developed until now. Some⌠chances of a NC?!
There are other reasons, too. Too many to list. So a recruiting policy shouldnât be set in stone and only taking one approach.
Thanks for the great explanation, @drgnslayr. With the vast number of combinations and permutations of things that have to align between team needs and player needs itâs no wonder some coaches donât like the recruiting grind. Too many variables.
Thanks for your responses. I guess I never really thought about what makes a great recruiter until now.
To be able to relate to so many different kids from so many different backgrounds and ultimately to make them feel at ease in a short amount of time is indeed a valuable skillset.
To have the ability to stand out from the crowd and make a lasting impression when a kid is talking to so many suitors is dang near priceless.
Serious question: As a recruiter what are you selling a kid?
A rather simplistic question, I know, but are you selling the program, playing time, national TV exposure, all of the above? Or are you selling to the parents? How much weight is placed on being straight with people and how much is telling them what they want to hear? Does each team have a pre-determined philosophy about how to approach recruiting or do teams let individuals flex their independence when talking to kids?
Would love to hear from someone in the know.

@BeddieKU23 the roster is going to go 13-15 deep with players who are all legit or better P5 players. a whole bunch of them are not going to play. a whole bunch of them are going to be disappointed when they figure that out. Self isnt messing around and trying to keep players happy. there will be a number of unhappy players because Self is not doing it Royâs way. Roy would get 7-8 legit dudes then surround with role players. Self has a dozen guys who could start at most schools. so half of them are going to find out they arenât starters at kansas. Bryce may not play much this year either. self is bringing in guards who are expecting to play. they canât all play a lot. honestly i can see bryce transferring if he doesnât beat the transfers out for playing time
For me personally I would rather have an embarrassment of riches than have the cupboard bare. Itâll be interesting to see how the pieces mesh and if Self can get them to check their egos at the door for the betterment of the team. If they buy in, next year could be special. If they canât, donât or wonât then perhaps itâs better they go elsewhere anyway.
