May I opine (and I'll admit, I am a glass 3/4 full kinda guy)? How 'bout a recruiting class that features Zeke, Chandler Lawson, Issac McBride and Christian Braun, along with another top 50 big man? I'll take that, along with Dedric and KJ both returning to play in Allen with their brother for one year..... I don't think that we'll get any probation, the story is TOO BIG, concerns all of college basketball, and even football.

That would be a bit of a disappointing class. Although you didn't specify which Top 50 big man it would be we can all but assume the only target that will be on the board is Hurt after the November signing period.

If the class is Hurt, Zeke, Lawson, McBride & Braun its still a bit disappointing considering the talent they pursued but in time maybe this class would be viewed differently. Hurt is a OAD impact starter. Zeke is a rotation/extremely high upside type.
I'm not a big fan of Chandler but his length (crazy wingspan) and skill set is intriguing to develop. McBride is a future starter imo, Bruan I will wait and see how much he changes his body and how he develops in the system.

I would put Dedric returning at less then 1%. 50/50 with KJ depending on his role and minutes this year.

I don't think Hurt is coming here. Self will get some guys, who they are or whether they will be dudes is yet to be determined.

Chandler seems very much still up in the air. Looks like Nike is making a push.

Self on Agbaji

"That's one of the ones that was luck that we got," Self said. "We didn't recruit Ochai hard, [assistant coach Norm Roberts] thought he could play well enough that I should go watch him. I went to watch him, and I go, 'I think he's better than who we're recruiting.'"

The next step of evaluation revealed only more of the same.

"Then when you get to know him and you study him; you get to see length, explosiveness, attitude and toughness," Self continued. "You also see that his sister plays volleyball at Texas. It's a very athletic family. Both parents played [college basketball]. You start thinking that this kid has got some things, some intangibles."

Of course, that final comment in and of itself would have been massive praise for any four-star freshman, especially one that was a late riser like Agbaji (even if he still finished well behind some of the more elite names in the class in the rankings).

Self, though, wasn't done hyping up the freshman.

"I don't want to make any predictions too bold, but he is going to be a guy who is going to start a lot of games, play a lot of minutes and score a lot of points while he is here," Self said. "It just may not happen immediately for him because we have depth. He was ranked No. 337 when he committed to us and I'll be surprised if he doesn't pan out to be one of the best 30-40 players in this class."

I actually think Cuonzo Martin would be a better NBA coach than college coach. I don't think he has a system that he can implement to get his lesser talents involved and productive on a consistent basis, but I think he could cater to his higher end talent. To be successful in the college game, he really needs to just build around his stars instead of trying to get guys in college to do things they just can't do. That's been his problem at every stop. He asks his third and fourth best guys to do things they just can't do.

Interesting point. I can't say I've watched enough of his games to draw conclusions about his coaching.

The best college coaches are basically dictators that micro-manage everything.

I'm looking forward to seeing the Dedric that Coach Self has been talking about: "unguardable" and "best passer." Dok may practice his free throw shooting during the exhibitions and Grimes, Dotson and Moore may acclimate to the flow of Coach Self's offense. I can't wait for the season to begin. Finally.

Dedric should look completely unstoppable in the exhibitions if he puts forth an effort. I'm intrigued to see him against MSU who has some big athletes in the post.

Swoosh rumors with JRE.

Imagine being this bitter. I can think of one poster here that would fit right in there.

Mizzou's Porter Karma • Oct 22, 2018 01:03 PM

Sucks for the kid. He would have been a first round pick last year.

Missouri fans will now get to continue to be delusional about Cuonzo because they will have an excuse this year. The guy makes Bruce look like Phil Jackson. He always has NBA guys on the roster and flames out early in the tournament. Hell with two NBA players, Charlie Moore and some other decent pieces he went to the NIT in his last year at Cal. 11 losses is his best record at Tenn, Cal or Missouri. That team had Jaylen Brown and Ivan Rabb on it, 4 guys that saw NBA minutes in total.

@Hawk8086 They surely don't in football.

New 2019 Recruiting • Oct 21, 2018 02:35 PM

@jayballer73 Definitely not saying that. I did say Zeke's dad has mentioned Zeke as a OAD. JRE is a 3-4 year guy for sure.

The Disappointment. • Oct 21, 2018 02:34 PM

You're insane if you think this...

"Self: They are. Nike gave a kid $80,000 to go to Duke. We were given a chance to match. We said no. A UK booster bought a kid’s mom a car. We won’t do that. I know we love coach Roy around here, but UNC arranged a payment of $50,000 to the guardian of a they guy we just missed on."

Would ever be said. I don't think you are insane.

Question: What do YOU want KU to do? • Oct 21, 2018 02:33 PM

@HighEliteMajor I have actually heard that Self got tired of recruiting for awhile. So it's possible that those 11 and 12 classes were mostly clean, and had academic risks.

But I'm saying Julian, Sherron, Arthur, Rush, Cole etc... Not clean recruitments.

The Disappointment. • Oct 21, 2018 02:00 PM

Fan fiction.

Emporia State EXI • Oct 21, 2018 01:34 PM

@wissox Yeah, MSU lost their two best players. Bridges and Jackson. Of course Izzo didn't play Jackson enough in the first place.

I've mentioned this before but my family is mostly MSU and U of M grads so I follow those two almost as closely as KU.

Anyway, not saying MSU can't win, because Izzo is a decent coach but this definitely isn't a vintage MSU team. The way I see it they have 4 dudes: Winston, Langford, Tillman and Ward and the rest are just guys. Patent pending on dudes and guys rating system. :joy:

Question: What do YOU want KU to do? • Oct 21, 2018 01:09 PM

Pretty hard to look at the 06-08 rosters and think Self might have been totally clean before the Wiggins class.

New 2019 Recruiting • Oct 21, 2018 04:16 AM

I'd love to get Zeke regardless of how long he plans to stay at this point, because KU definitely needs help for next year's front court if the team is going to be FF good.

I do find the Venn diagram of people who simultaneously are mad at Self for maybe playing fast and loose with NCAA rules and not recruiting well enough humorous.

Self is a good recruiter and has good guys on the staff. The turmoil and uncertainty could cause problems though, like it did temporarily for Arizona and Louisville but I also fully expect Self and co to bounce back strong in recruiting once the crap is done.

Talking retrospectively. Like the early 2010’s classes were garbage but OH NO SELF HAS TO BE A SAINT

Oh yeah for sure, those people are goofs. You get recruiting classes like Wisconsin when you are clean.

New 2019 Recruiting • Oct 21, 2018 04:11 AM

@JayHawkFanToo JRE will announce before that game is played.

@FarmerJayhawk Actually I agree with you. Zeke has enormous potential. I was hoping he would be a multi-year guy but it sounded like his dad was saying the plan is OAD. JRE is definitely a really good basketball player right now, but his long term and star potential are kinda meh. He reminds me of Perry in that respect. Better leaper than Perry for sure though.

New 2019 Recruiting • Oct 21, 2018 04:04 AM

@JayHawkFanToo Well if it wasn't the situation, Self got his ass kicked by Jay Wright for JRE. It feels like it was a factor though.

Worst (realistic) scenario: a lineup of Moore, Garrett, K.J., Zeke, McCormack is a top 10 team that’ll win the conference.

@Crimsonorblue22 I know you're disappointed. But you love KU. You posted 600 comments when we won the B12 last year, won the B12 tournament, and made it to the Final Four. You posted when Grimes played, and Bill coached the USA under 18 Olympics. You posted during our summer scrimmages. You posted about our crummy football team. You posted when we got a new AD. You watched every second of Late Night. Now....lets say...If you had never posted after calling one of our players a 'cancer" last year...never made one comment about us making it to the Final Four, never gave your opinion about who was going to start, and were completely AWOL for EVERYTHING ...late night...summer scrimmages...recruiting... the whole she-bang ...until some stupid bullshit came up that makes us look bad, and you about broke your fingers wringing your hands talking about how "ashamed" you were, and you had spent the last 5 years writing negative articles about our team, our coach, our players, and our accomplishments, then I would be calling bullshit on you, too. But you're not on here playing some stupid head game- you're just like me...you love KU. So, don't get suckered in - a dead clock is right twice a day. We will overcome this, and we will be stronger for it at some point.

And I thought I was drunk. Oh wait I am.

Anyway yeah, this team could definitely win a national title. Even without Silvio, though Silvio would obviously help. I have very high hopes. Best roster Self has had since those 2010 and 2011 teams.

Also Self will add some guys, I just have no idea who they will be. Self isn't going into next season with Dave, Mitch and a combo forward as the only post guys.

@BShark I would think KJ and Mac would be our starting frontline. We'll have Dotson, Garrett, Charlie, Agbaji, Braun in the back court, with Mac, KJ, and Lightfoot up front. Unless KJ goes pro.

prepares sky is falling material

Yeah, that's very not good. That's a lose in the round of 32 type of roster unfortunately. Probably doesn't win the league either with how good ISU, TCU and Texas will be. It's basically this year's roster minus the best 4-5 guys. Braun being the 5th guard is terrifying and Charlie Moore is Naadir Tharpe 2.0. That post line-up is already falling off a cliff from this year. If KJ did leave as well, it would be a disaster.

Best to enjoy this year.

@mayjay That's some quality right there.

I'm about to try Dalwhinnie 15 year.

New 2019 Recruiting • Oct 20, 2018 09:38 PM

I am still not sure there will be major infractions, but it will definitely impact recruiting. I'm not sure where KU is going to go for post players now. Might need Mitch next season.

Gross. Not only are they kicking our ass on he court they are going to come in and get a kid that KU has no excuse to lose. This one will hurt if it happens.

Yep. Sucks.

Have to think the current situation is having an impact in recruiting.

Agree. Even if Silvio can't go tbh I'd rather KJ be used as the back-up 4.

If Mitch plays one real minute at the three I will be shocked.

I could see him getting a few minutes here and there at the 3 this season. Definitely not equal to what he will at the 4. I think most of those minutes at the 3 would come due to foul issues though or if Self wants to go with a huge line up. Silvio playing this year would also probably make Mitch playing some minutes at the 3 the best way to get him on the floor.

I think this would also likely be Self experimenting with different line up combinations during the nonconference part of the schedule and wouldn't expect to see Mitch at the 3 during B12 play except in extreme situations.

Right. I could have been more clear but by real minutes I meant close/big games and not when KU is up big against a team such as South Dakota.

I can definitely see Self fooling around in those types of situations.

Preseason Hype/Discussion • Oct 20, 2018 02:38 PM

So, Kenpom's system isn't without issues especially for preseason but KU is #1 on Kenpom preseason and it's not even close.

The NCAA isn't interested in enforcement, that's clear.

If it was enforced, I wonder if more players would skip college.

The Disappointment. • Oct 20, 2018 03:55 AM

Considering all the details have come out over the years like @kjayhawks said I would like to think Self wouldn't do that. Kjay even didn't mention some like Tharpe having sex on the court or w/e that was and the Morris twins with the bb gun.

Covering up a rape is a lot different than getting players paid I think. But I wouldn't say the question is invalid.

The Disappointment. • Oct 20, 2018 03:37 AM
