Michigan Actually Plays D • Apr 03, 2018 12:41 PM

@HighEliteMajor Garrett might end up being a hidden gem. His final ranking is deceptive. KU was on him when he was unranked and his only had offers were from Baylor and SMU.

@JayHawkFanToo I don’t see this high ceiling. 3 years in and He seems like the same player he was when he got here. A skinny kid that doesn’t play hard on defense and is a streaky shooter with no ability to create his own shot. I don’t know what upside is really left because I don’t see that changing. Vick can’t dribble and doesn’t have an aggressive bone in his body. I’d rather have one of the best scorers in Indiana High School history who seems to have some
competitive fire and more potential than Vick if he truly buys in. Of course that’s my opinion, and I do understand why others would rather have Vick and an experienced returner instead.

Yeah, counting on Vick to get his act together/suddenly get aggressive seems like a sucker bet.

@Texas-Hawk-10 Most of them were crap. The Foster situation was absurd. We will see what happens. Like I said though if Brown goes pro that hurts them big time.

DiVincenzo 3 star ranked 120. Wright must have a hell of an eye for talent. He’s on a heck of a run without needing to tap into the 1 and done market.

Wright and Belein are both very good at finding hidden gems tbh.

Markese Jacobs • Apr 03, 2018 02:53 AM

@KUSTEVE Wrong thread? But yeah, helicopter dad alert.

Michigan Actually Plays D • Apr 03, 2018 02:37 AM

Welp, you tried Michigan.

Michigan Actually Plays D • Apr 03, 2018 02:37 AM

Yeah I jinxed Michigan. Though Belein taking out two of his better players as soon as they hit two fouls effected the game. I don't think be brought either one back in. :/

Michigan Actually Plays D • Apr 03, 2018 01:50 AM

Crazy.

Also...Belein is really something.

The HS ranking of all their rotation players via 247: #119, #434, #93, #133, #142, #67 (FR), a DIVISION THREE transfer and a Kentucky washout.

Dude can COACH.

Why We Didn’t Win—Part Two • Apr 03, 2018 01:42 AM

@Crimsonorblue22 Impossible though.

Draft Declarations Thread • Apr 03, 2018 01:42 AM

Shine and Sima leaving Okie St.

kjayhawks said:

@Crimsonorblue22 Brown is entering without an agent, absolutely no chance of Dean Wade ever making a NBA roster.

If Brown does leave, that completely changes my outlook for KSU. He is their best guard.

Agree on Wade. He is a liability on D.

Why We Didn’t Win—Part Two • Apr 03, 2018 01:28 AM

I don't think this team makes the FF with Preston instead of Silvio.

Texas Tech was a top 10 team.

KU got softer 4/5 seeds in comparison to Villanova by the numbers.

Purdue, a top 5 team was Villanova's 2 seed. It's not their fault that Purdue couldn't beat Tech.

You are creating a narrative that does not exist. Bringing up facts like these don't matter though, because you want to live in a fantasy world where KU is playing against all odds. It's just not the truth.

Texas Hawk 10 said:

@BShark KSU has also had a lot of players transfer out under Weber. I would wait and see about their transfers before anointing them a top 25 team.

A lot of them were forced out by Bruce. I'd be surprised if any of their relevant players transferred.

Doke • Apr 02, 2018 10:59 PM

@FarmerJayhawk Well said, I hope Doke returns too. More options is a good thing. I trust Self to figure out rotations and situational line-ups.

kjayhawks said:

It too early for me to release my high anticipated Top 25 for 2018-19 lol. I agree @dylans How is KSU not ranked after being in the EE and finishing 4th in the conference while returning....everyone? I bet on my Top 25 having atleast 3 B12 teams in it.

Strongly agree with this. Sure KSU sucked against the top part of the league and based on stuff like Kenpom etc... wasn't top 25 this year. However after that run and returning every player they deserve it. The returning everyone aspect can be easy to overlook I suppose but it's huge in this day and age in college hoops with all the attrition. Another year older and improved and they should easily be top 15-25 all year minimum. They really should finish top 3 in the league.

The refs do not favor Villanova good lord.

Langford • Apr 02, 2018 10:54 PM

@Kcmatt7 Agree, Vick is very replaceable. Even as a SR. Don't mean to bash. I wouldn't hate it if he came back but I don't see it. Iirc he has some kids, so he might just want to start cashing checks.

Man, feel bad for Cunliffe. Should have transferred to a next step down program like ISU, or OU.

Forwarding to cyclonefanatic. :joy:

Cunliffe won't be a factor next year. He has been saying the right things but I won't be surprised if he transfers again. He still has a RS year to take*.

*He played two half seasons which each count as a full season of eligibility. The time off for the transfer however does not count as a redshirt, he just couldn't play.

jaybate 1.0 said:

@BShark

There really was an easy region: Villanova’s.

Strongly disagree.

jaybate 1.0 said:

@BShark

It does mean that. They have the easy seeding and the refs and they go out early and it means they were overrated. Simple.

Man, those KU teams that lost early in the tournament under Self must have been really overrated. Especially the 2010 team.

Langford • Apr 02, 2018 08:14 PM

@jayballer73 My personal crystal ball is at 99% KU.

Villanova was one of the best teams in the country last season too. They lost early in the tournament but that doesn't change the fact that they were one of the 5 best teams.

@kjayhawks There is a lot of luck involved in the tournament. KU won their three games after the first all by 4 points each. Just as easily could have lost any of them with a different call here or there.

The way I see it with OADs it's fine to have a few here and there. Last year w/o JJ and subtitute in a random 4 yr recruit in their first year and where is that team? Probably much worse.

There wasn't really a stacked region. They were pretty balanced. There is no rule that says you have to win your conference. Xavier and Villanova were both very good teams. Villanova was better despite not winning their conference. Winning the conference doesn't make one team better than another.

Draft Declarations Thread • Apr 02, 2018 06:32 PM

Jaren Jackson JR declaring w/ agent. What a wasted one year at MSU.

@kjayhawks Part of having higher rated classes is getting OADs. Nova guys not only stay, many of them redshirt.

It's not a mystery. They were one of the best teams all year period by any measure.

Langford • Apr 02, 2018 04:02 PM

:fire: :fire: :fire:

Gosh darn that rascal Jay Wright for finding sub top 75 recruits that can shoot, that are willing to take a red shirt and develop.

Draft Declarations Thread • Apr 02, 2018 03:54 PM

Does Oregon need a scholarship? lol

147-37

164-21 (3-0 head to head) 8-3 in "trough"* games this year. 1 title already, maybe another tonight.

*As defined by shooting 33% or worse from three. It's 12-4 if you expand to 38% or less.

Weird.

2019 Recruiting • Apr 02, 2018 03:29 PM

You are right about that. Harvey isn't either. I wrote about this in another thread but it's hard to find guys that are elite athletes and elite shooters. Those tend to be OAD players.

I'm fine with adding kids like Thompson and Harvey, just need some athletes too. This year's KU team was an odd beast because of a lack of any kind of depth up front while starting 3 guys that aren't great athletes at the P5 level.

:joy:

2019 Recruiting • Apr 02, 2018 03:00 PM

Should be a 2G/CG. Doubt he grows enough to be a wing.

If Newman comes back I will temp ban myself.

9/11 Effect Hits March Carney, KU Hard • Apr 02, 2018 02:10 PM

@jaybate-1.0 You could argue for UVA that's about it. Conference play doesn't really matter. Nova lost it by one game to a team they pummeled twice. They are 35-4 with some of the best efficiency numbers in the country. Best offense. Top 15 defense.

TL;DR KU's recruiting and who they are targeting is fine, but you don't always land your top targets unless you are Duke.

@HighEliteMajor I agree for the most part, rewatched some of the game this morning. I’ve mentioned it several times the last few years and I believe it to be true, we do not have the athletes that we need to win in the NCAA tournament (outside of JJ and Mason). Before 2014 very seldom did I come into a games thinking the other team is just better than us in terms of athletic ability, since 2014 it’s almost every game vs power 5 comp. Whomever is evaluating these guys isn’t doing anywhere near as good as Villanova, our recruiting classes have been better more often than not but they look like they have more talent and athletic ability than us.

Wow, a team hitting a lot more shots in one game than they did any other time becomes an indictment of recruiting for a period of years?

I think some people here need a major dose of overreaction antidote.

I must have glazed over kjayhawks post before.

Some comments...

Long have KU fans bemoaned the lack of trey ballers. Well it's hard to find elite athletes that are also elite shooters. They tend to end up in the NBA quickly.

So would you rather have Svi or Jamari?

To have guys that stay around, they need some kind of NBA deficiency. Dedric for instance is a terrible athlete* or he'd already be in the NBA. Like Perry he doesn't really have a position in today's NBA.

*FOR THE NBA LEVEL before anyone wants to tell me he's a great athlete compared to 99% of the planet

Also if we are being completely honest, kids like Graham and Svi were not first choices. In their same class alone KU offered the likes of Stanley Johnson, Rashad Vaughn, Tyus Jones, Mudiay etc...

So many of these Nova players redshirted. KU fans would LOSE their mind if that happened here. Also Wright has been lucky with guys coming back. Mikal Bridges belongs in the NBA right now.

2019 Recruiting • Apr 02, 2018 01:41 PM

@BeddieKU23 If the staff swings for a commitment it's really hard to see it not happening.

Doke • Apr 02, 2018 01:39 PM

Overall I would like Doke back. Hopefully he can stay healthy either way.

Thanks approx.

If Newman and Lawson are together on our team we could have 2 guys averaging 20ppg. Dueling frontrunners for national player of the year on the same team. Would that be a first or is that even possible?

Zero chance Newman stays unfortunately.

Draft Declarations Thread • Apr 02, 2018 01:20 PM

My guess is Newman declares with agent, Doke declares w/o and probably comes back and Vick ends up somewhere else one way or another.

9/11 Effect Hits March Carney, KU Hard • Apr 02, 2018 01:14 PM

Villanova is the best team in the country. Usually that gets you a 1 seed...

Langford • Apr 01, 2018 10:07 PM

@truehawk93 I'm confused by your list. Svi and Graham are seniors.

kjayhawks said:

@BShark I’m hoping we at least one guy that can stop the dribble drive, we have not had that in years IMO.

Dotson has the attitude and the tools. Grimes has the tools. Next year can end up being a great defensive team, but with so many FR it will take time.

BigBad said:

We had one player all year that could create for himself and more importantly create for others, Devonte. It's the reason the guy had to play 40 MPG. For all the talk of Malik in the postseason he is really just a streaky spot up guy with ZERO ability to drive, draw, and dish. Svi will drive but only left and is an easy scout. It is just like the Washington game. Play up on us and make us drive it. All the talk of modern basketball and Nova being able to shoot 3s from every position, people forget the triple threat. Their guys also have the threat to drive. Big difference.

I think this will ultimately be a big difference next year. Dedric is a guy that can get himself buckets. Dotson and Grimes are creators. Dotson is very fast.

Happy it is Beilein or Wright • Apr 01, 2018 06:09 PM

I'd love to see Belein get a ring, hell of a coach that does more with less.
