@FarmerJayhawk I've got good news about Mosley. Wonder if we have room for Mosley and McCullar or we are dead set on a small guard? Think we whiff on Hunter to the Ville.

As of now we only have one spot, so might just be Mosley. But still over a month to sort out.

Next Year's Team Thread • May 02, 2022 09:45 PM

I’ve heard McCullar really wants KU IF he decides to come back to college. There’s no rush on either end. As of now we don’t have a roster spot for him (Hunter and Mosley are ahead on KU’s board) and I think everyone involved is happy to wait out the draft process

I have a decent source that said we actually tried to get Chukwu to do this before he ended up at Syracuse.... So definitely possible. And I expect someone to do it eventually in this new world.

That sounds really familiar. What a saga

It’s still odd we haven’t heard anything from our guys yet. I suppose we could still just stand pat and bring in Hunter or Moseley. Though I’d love them both. Think they’d fill very different yet complementary roles

@FarmerJayhawk Is that by school or like ever? For example, could a student leave one program with a scholarship to be a walk on at another?

By school. So hypothetically Baylor could walk on at KU since we never officially recruited him.

@BShark not enough schollies.

How is it not enough scholarships to bring in two transfers? KU is losing Remy, JCL, and Mitch to eligibility, Ocahi and Dave appear set to pursue professional careers, and Braun is most likely gone which puts KU at 6 openings. As of now, KU only has 4 incoming players if everything else holds which means 2 more spots available for transfers.

Mitch didn’t count last year. 5 counters out, 4 in.

Extremely good! I think Hunter's numbers will get significantly better. Even Jalen shot it decent in league play.

Got it then Baylor would be great but that’s a definite drop off compared to Och. If the kid can shoot 40% from a higher volume it might work. Replacing ochai though good luck

Hunter it sounds okay but seems like if he was never in for a visit we won’t get him. His offense is solid looking at the last 10 or so games as others have said. He also can beat his man off the dribble to create. Hunter is legit the isu offense was the issue.

Wasn’t in yet* Hunter will visit. There’s no rush on his end.

@jayballer67 in-state recruiting in 2023 will pretty much be a bust. As far as portal guys go, we're touching base with so many it's hard to keep track. I do know two JuCo safeties will visit next weekend, and we had a WR from Minnesota in for a visit last weekend. Haven't heard how much of a chance we have with them, but I do know they're casting a very wide net in the portal.

2024 is probably going to be the staff's make or break season on the trail. It's another very strong local class and 2023 is scheduled to be the breakout on the field. Canady is certainly one to follow over the next 18 months.

Thanks for that. I had heard at one point must of been hot air - I had heard at one time they thought we was doing really good in the 2023 class. - What Happened ? did the staff just drop the ball at ol boy left ?

Long story, but the very very short version is Schoonover developed lots of those relationships then Lance basically fired him.

Could be some good 2022 news coming…

Yeah, the majority of portal recruiting now is over FaceTime and/or Zoom. The visits just deal the deal.

@Kcmatt7 said in NIL, transfers, NCAA Policies and where do we go from here:

I am still not seeing the issues other than the transfer market being crazy.

Miami paying big bucks for a player is GOOD for the sport. They've only made the tournament 11 times in history. They beat out some top tier basketball schools for him. If money wasn't a thing, Nigel Pack is either back at KSU or somewhere in Indiana.

NIL is going to let some schools who can get creative compete at a national level. And I don't think it will decimate mid-majors the way people think. We just saw a 15 seed make an elite eight run. Literally the furthest a 15 seed has gone in the history of the tournament. And the only reason that roster is being decimated is because the coach left.

While mid-major's will lose their best players yearly (it is a reality) they also will get to backfill their roster with the Tristan Enaruna's of the world. A guy with P5 athleticism and experience. There is a give and take.

I do like the idea of a shorter transfer window.

I also like the idea of limiting the number of transfer roster spots allowed or some sort of mechanism that doesn't allow for 1500 new spots to open up. So, you are free to transfer, but there might not be a scholarship for you waiting on the other side of it. Almost like how football limits you to 25 scholarships per recruiting class. You can have 13 scholarships, but each year you can only add 3 players from the portal. Something like that I think could work.

No matter what I don't think it is the end of the sport or the world. This last NC game just set a record for viewers so people are still watching games.

That's a good idea. Limit transfers to 3 a year. I would also put a provision in that you can transfer the first time and be immediately eligible, but have to sit out a year with any more transfers you make.

The latter is already the rule. You only get one freebie without a waiver.

2022 Transfer Portal Thread • Apr 25, 2022 08:38 PM

I broke his stats down to pre-February vs. February-March: 38.5%/21.8%/68.9% vs. 40%/35.1%/68.4%. Really shot it better from 3 later in the season. Counting stats pretty much the same

@Kcmatt7 yeah hoops is relatively cheap. Anything beyond sustaining excellence for hoops should go to football.

For the love of all that is holy just get enough to land a few local kids over KSU. Has to happen. LL might need to be more selective with targets, but they've got to find a way.

We're in good shape for a couple (Calvin Clements, Tre Richardson, Sam Same). The bigger names will take some time and success on the field to really get a foothold. Not for lack of trying. Coaches are all over the state recruiting this week. Fuchs is working hard on Otting, and Zebrowski is still working Avery Johnson. Have to up to the end.

I'm with you for the most part here. No way this turns into gloom and doom for college sports. Shoot, pay to play has been happening for 80 years. Nothing new here, it's just out in the open. Will there be a market correction? Sure, I guess that could happen. I won't feel sorry for rich people who are spending some disposable income on what's more or less a hobby. Them's the breaks.

The portal window is shorter this year. Last year the deadline to enter for fall eligibility was July 1, now it's May 1. Anyone who enters after has to sit out until fall 2023. They also tried it in football. You had to maintain good academic standing through the end of the semester to be eligible right away.

Also worth noting the one time transfer was the norm for the vast majority of SA's for a loooooong time. I believe only football, men's basketball, and maybe volleyball(?) had a sit out provision. Literally all other sports had this already, just nobody noticed.

Tl;dr: there's nothing new under the sun.

This is going to be a bumpy ride, folks.

What did I miss?

It's becoming clear we're going to whiff on a ton of local kids this cycle. No reason to panic, but also not ideal

National guys or mostly to KState?

A little of both. Avery Johnson seems likely to KSU now. A lot of bigger places have slow played him. KU has recruited him the hardest, but seems like we're the nerd hitting on the prom queen. The RBs will go elsewhere. Nobody seems to know jack on Randle, but it's 100% not KU. We don't have the... resources... to pull that one off. Edwards looks like OU. The OL are tricky. I really, really, really want Otting and Clements but Otting seems to be holding out for Iowa and Clements possibly Baylor. I think KU sits in the second tier with both. Wes Fair is going to KSU. The only local kids I feel good about are Sam Same and Tre Richardson. To a lesser extent Andre Davis. I think we're in the top tier with all those guys, but someone could swoop in and snag Davis if he has a good year.

Rumor is KSU is offering $50k for Kansas guys to sign. I don't know exactly where we are but I know it's not that high.

Update: we’re in the top tier for Clements. The hometown hero thing and publicity that comes with it is appealing.

Not so fast on Arnold…
