Believe in something • Sep 04, 2018 02:33 PM

This cannot possibly have been made for marketing reasons; no marketing person in his or her right mind would think that alienating more than half of your target audience is a good move and several interviews with people in the marketing business I have seen and read pretty much indicated the same thing; needless to say, there are many groups that think is a great move. It looks like it was done solely for political reasons and it might backfire big time. Maybe this will be the start of a loss of influence by Nike in the recruiting world and help Adidas???

For the record, I don’t own any Nike product so if it loses or gains any market share does not affect me at all.

@jayballer73

I posted before reading Beaty’s correction but the broadcast repeatedly indicated (erroneously) that Dineen was the one that committed the face mask. As I indicated, Dineen had a great game which looks even better now that we know he did not commit the infraction.

Reason for optimism • Sep 03, 2018 05:33 PM

@kjayhawks

Williams and Herbert running stats are somewhat deceiving. Herbert had 61 yards in 12 carries but one of the carries was a 23 yard which skews the average; if you take that one run he is 38 yard in 11 carries or 3.5 yards per carry. Williams is similar since he had 35 yards in 6 carries but 23 of those came in one carry so the other 12 came on 5 carries or 2.4 yards per carry.

The offensive line was...well...offensive, the Bender hardly had any time to throw and was sacked 6 times. The defense showed some potential at times and Dinnen had a great game with 16 including 12 solo tackles but he also had a very costly face mask penalty.

Looks like 0-12 is a realistic outcome for the season. Basketball cannot come soon enough and hopefully make up for the nightmarish football season ahead.

I think you are getting the terms interpreted in a very narrow form. The Term Main Stream Media is not unique to hard news but to all form of media . The currently accepted definition is: Mainstream media (MSM) is a term and abbreviation used to refer collectively to the various large mass news media that influence a large number of people, and both reflect and shape prevailing currents of thought. Whether we like it or not, sources such as TMZ, Bravo, A&E, TLC and ET are considered part of the MSM since they report entertainment or lighter news in the same way ESPN and Fox Sports report sports news and both are considered MSM; many of these notworks have larger audiences than traditional outlets like CNN.

I am not sure I follow but here it is. Chanel “38 the Spot” in KC is the local tv station that is part of the Jayhawk Network ↗, until a few days ago only Metro Sports would carry the 2 football games and 6 basketball games that were blacked out. Here is the schedule ↗ for Saturday that shows the KU football game. The local cable providers carry this station but I do not have cable and I use YouTube TV streaming service instead and it does carry the local station for the 4 major networks (ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox) but Chanel 38 is not one of them so I get it using an antenna over the air (OTA). If your own provider carried Metro/Spectrum Sports before you should continue to watch the games like you did. Until recently, only Comcast and Time Warner carried Metro Sports in the KC Metro area and the rest were blacked out, now that 38 the Spot is allowed to carry them a lot more of us have access to these games.

Hopefully my explanation makes sense.

Jeff Long • Aug 29, 2018 03:24 AM

@Crimsonorblue22

Chanel 38 in KC, the local Jayhawk Network station, is showing the game on Saturday at 6:00 PM. I get that station over the air since YouTube TV does not carry it.

Our parents got the news from Cronkite, we got the news from Kopel and CNN and the younger generation gets is news from a Twitter and bloggers.

Jeff Long • Aug 27, 2018 12:27 PM

@drgnslayr

I believe the answer to your question, IMHO, is no, it likely would not happened until the contract was up for renewal since doing it would have been an admission of how unfavorable the contract was to KU in the first place. As I mentioned before, this issue alone cost him the support of the largest base of KU fans in the country and probably his job as well.

I'd be among the very last to ever defend the Z person (don't even want to type his name anymore) but to be fair there was no ESPN+ or other OTT network from ESPN at the time....it was all cable based. That doesn't excuse the deal Z made....it was lousy, but there were only cable options at that time....no OTT.

Actually, the primary issue, at least in the greater KC Metro Area was not ESPN but the contract that took away broadcasst by local stations and gave TW Metro Sports exclusive local coverage of some football and basketball games and only its partner, Comcast, was allowed to carry the programs. Other primary cable outlets in the Kansas side such as At&T and CCI did not carry because TW made prohibitively expensive for them to do it and thus left a large number of fans unable to get those games.

Actually the other portion of the contract was with cable only ESPN3 and the provision that the entire state of Kansas and the KC Metro are would be blacked out which left fans with no access to Metro sports completely option-less.

The new contract allows local station to carry those games and lifts all the previous blackouts, something that shopuld have been done in the first place.

Peterson is not only a brilliant thinker but a very polished and skilled debater as well. Ben Shapiro is also one of brighter minds of the new generation but more blunt than Peterson. He graduated with top honors from UCLA at age 20 after skipping two grades in school and then got a law degree from Harvard also with top honors; he wrote his first book by the time he was 18...In case you were wondering, he is not a fan or supporter of Trump.

What makes you think Dotson is a short guard? Every single publication (even KU) lists Dotson as 6’2” the same height as Devonte and Chalmers and taller than RussRob, Sherron, Mason and Tharpe and just an inch short than Tayshawn Taylor, all of the recent PGs at KU. Moore is the same height as Collins, Tharpe and Mason...and no, I am not going by KU measurements, which actually proved to be spot on if you look at the listed height at KU and compare with measurements at the NBA combined in the last few years, I am going by listed measurements in other publications which list height. You are welcome to find a recent publication that lists Dotson shorter than 6’2”; his height in elementary or middle school do not count.

ESPN plus • Aug 26, 2018 07:27 PM

@Crimsonorblue22

That is not good.

What device are you mirroring from? What is its internet connection speed? Many devices will adjust resolution to connection speed/signal and also many devices that allow streaming and mirroring such as Roku sticks will also reduce quality when a poor signal or low speed is detected. I had problems with getting wi-fi signal upstairs since the main router is in the basement so I installed a repeater connected through the house power wiring and now the signal is great and so is the TV display.

After Losing To Nicholls By Double Digits • Aug 26, 2018 05:55 PM

If at the break after the 6th game KU is not at least 2-4 and preferably 3-3, Beaty will likely be gone at that point and since the last 6 games will be loses, he will be gone at the end of the year any way. The offense might score point but I don't see the defense as being any good. Short of a miracle, I just don't see how Beaty survives.

Markese Jacobs • Aug 26, 2018 04:39 PM

While it is not unprecedented for a player to decommit and then commit again (4-start Brandon Williams decommitted from Arizona and later committed again), looks like Jacobs has already several P5 offers and will likely sign with a program where he has a better shot at playing time.

I really like the kid, he was a big KU fan who signed early and every picture I saw of him he was always wearing KU gear. I am sure it is hard on him but having several offers from quality programs probably eases the blow.

As far as I know he is still in school and working out with the the team. I really don't expect the NCAA to do anything until the FBI has acted and by that time the season might be over. I assume KU will get assurances from the NCAA that Silvio is still eligible because it would not risk having to forfeit games, more so in a season where the National Title is a very realistic goal.

A really nice addition to the board would be the ability to add polls like you can on other boards or Facebook where you can poll psters with some pre-selected choices and then they can vote for one or add a new option and the tally is updated. Really easy way to see what the trends are without a lot of posts that do not actual tally.

BOLD PREDICTIONS • Aug 26, 2018 04:01 PM

@BShark

I agree. Grimes is the best combo guard of the class that can play 1-4 and might actually be the best PG in this team, but for the team, he is a better option at SG or wing. Moore is a natural SG but with the build of a small PG so I expect that when playing with Grimes they might switch position at times depending on the match ups but the primary PGs for the team will be Moore and Dotson with Garret as a distant third option. When playing a tall PG that would have too much advantage over Moore or Dotson, Grimes can slide to that position or Garret can play PG as well.

BOLD PREDICTIONS • Aug 26, 2018 03:39 PM

@stoptheflop

I also watched all the games and I was surprised when he played PG because he obviously was projected to play SG in college. I will guess that Coach Self saw in practice how good he was and decided to have him run the point; a real luxury to have a capable 6'-5" PG.

He was extremely good against competition that in some games was the equivalent of a JuCo team but other times was very good and he was rightly named the Tournament MVP. No doubt he is the best combo guard of his class.

KU has had several players (in recent years) that were ready to start and contribute very early on, McLemore, Selden Jackson. Wiggins come to mind and others did not start right away but did as the season went on, Embiid, Oubre come to mind and others such as Perry, Mason and Graham that you could see their potential became outstanding players but not necessarily from the get go.

From what I have seen, Grimes might be the player most ready to start and contribute from day one in recent years; Coach Self has pretty much said the same thing. You mentioned that at the U18 his 3 point shot was not as good as expected but he was shooting from FIBA range which is farther out than college; I expect him to be a 40% or better 3 point shooter, he was at that level his junior and senior HS years and with the additional training I am sure he will be up there in college. More concerning is his FT shooting since he has averaged around 64% which is low for someone that will be shooting fa air number of them.

What I was trying point out but you keep ignoring is that Kasich has very little, if any, influence in the Republican Party. The only state he won in the primaries was his own state of Ohio where he ran as “favorite son” and even then he got only 47% of the vote where candidates with that designation typically garner much higher numbers and, Ohio having changed to a “winner-take-all” primary, gave him the bulk of his delegates; in comparison Cruz won 11 primaries and Rubio 3 even when Kasich was the last candidate to withdraw. He is the only candidate not to endorse Trump, the official party candidate, and voted instead for McCain which was the equivalent of a gigantic middle finger to the party since most republicans consider McCain, because his marked shift in politics and senate votes on critical legislation in recent years, a Republican-in-name-only or RINO, much like Kasich is anymore.

Republican believe that his hatred for Trump has clouded his judgment during the primaries and after that and, while he still has local state support, he is no longer considered part of the party leadership and his national influence is nil. Congressmen run in their own districts and the governor has little influence in these election so Kasich has zero influence in any impeachment preceding that may or may not happen. That is all, no need to make any more complicated.

ANYONE WANT TO PREDICT.... • Aug 24, 2018 04:41 PM

@justanotherfan

Yes, he has a slim margin but it will also heavily depend on who the democrats select. The new faces and potential candidate are all way to the left and the least liberal is Biden, who did not have enough support even as the sitting VP and would be 78 years old, in comparison, Reagang is the oldest elected president and was 69 at the time of his first inauguration.

The next election might be one in which a credible third party candidate can affect the results like Perot did taking many republican votes and helping Clinton in the process. If Sanders, who would be 79, runs as an independent the votes would come from the democrats; a more centrist candidate might take votes from both parties and I would no be surprised to see the winner get under 40% of the popular vote.

Jeff Long • Aug 24, 2018 04:16 PM

@Crimsonorblue22

If I recall correctly Zenger was fired in May? Had he fixed this issue he might have, maybe not necessarily saved his job, but at least bought himself some time. This was a hot issue with the fans base in KC which carries a fair amount of weight and perhaps was the driving force behind his firing. Maybe there were other issues we are not privy that cost him his job.

As you know, I have been very vocal about Zenger and it is/was a fair reflection of the fans in the KC area.

2019 Recruiting • Aug 24, 2018 04:07 PM

@BShark

Based on rankings, who would have thought Mason would end up consensus POY? Or Devonte barely miss it? Amazing development for both and big kudos to the staff that saw that potential.

KU used to be Big U but recently has developed more guards and wings than bigs. If Jacobs develops to be 70%-80% as good as Mason or Graham I would be pleased.

Jeff Long • Aug 24, 2018 03:52 PM

@justanotherfan

I work with contract too. As a consultant, every bit of work I do involves a contract of some sort and there are many ways to structure them; some tend to favor clients and some the service provider. When the actual numbers (money’s, quantities) are hard to estimate they are structured in such a way where either party can either backup or renegotiate the contract based on new information.

The original contract was universally considered to be not favorable to KU since the school did not even get any money and payment was structured as programming in kind and the contract left a lot of KU fans in the state, and particularly the greater KC Metro area, without coverage which resulted in the biggest concentration of Jayhawk fans in the country very displeased with Zenger...which in hindsight was probably his undoing. I don’t believe the contract was up yet and the new AD was able to make changes that corrected a lot of the issues. Probably helped the fact that Metro Sports might be going out of business in the near future.

As you know, in contracting you never get what you deserve, you get what you negotiate; whoever negotiated the previous contract with KU obviously did a great job. It is very telling that one of the first acts of the new AD was to address and correct this issue, he certainly is now in the good side of fans.

2019 Recruiting • Aug 24, 2018 02:50 PM

@BeddieKU23

Jacobs is an interesting situation. All the articles I have read of him (which there are not many) seem to indicate he is playing well. The drop in the rankings is somewhat surprising and worrisome; I wonder if his height is being factored as a bigger negative than we think, particularly when ranking services appear to be gearing up to evaluate player for immediate NBA potential since that is coming in the not too distant future and Jacosbs pro potential appears very limited.

Every picture I have seen of him he is always wearing KU gear and it would be pretty tough for him not to come, at least initially, to KU.

Urban Meyer given 3 game suspension • Aug 24, 2018 09:51 AM

@jaybate-1.0

Kasich is a big fish in a small pond. While he is well liked in Ohio a lot of his support does not come from the Republican Party that sees him as a RINO. Ohio voted Democrat by 5% and 3% in the previous 2 election but Trump turned it around and carried the state by 8 points; he is a lot more popular among Republicans in Ohio than Kasich is.

In any case, Kasich has zero influence on whether Trump gets impeached, these charges can only be brought up by the House and it would happen only if Republicans lose the majority and even if that were to happen, 17 Republican Senators would have to flip to convict which is just not going to happen any more than Democrats did when not a single one voted to convict Clinton who had lied under oath; the ABA was not as kind and took his law license away.

Urban Meyer given 3 game suspension • Aug 24, 2018 03:41 AM

@jaybate-1.0

P.S.: Ohio Republican Senator John Kasich is a strong critic of President Trump, a likely pro impeachment vote, and a possible challenger for Trump,

Kasich was never a US senator, he was a congressman but left Congress 17+ years ago in 2001. He has been the Governor of Ohio since 2010 and as such he has nothing to do with any potential
Trump impeachment proceedings. BTW, Trump handily beat him and the entire Republican field in the 2016 primaries.

Point taken but keep in mind that of the projected rotation players only Dotson and Grimes have not been with the team for at least one season.
