The New Devonte Graham • Nov 18, 2017 07:48 PM

At this time, Devonte seems to be comfortable doing primarily one thing at the time, scoring or distributing the ball. Until he is comfortable doing both, I am happy with him just doing the ball distribution, the shooting will eventually catch up.

@REHawk

…and Ivanka will probably pocket the patent on both the shoes and glasses?

Let's no go there; this is not the political forum.

LaVar , LaVar , LaVar - - Damn • Nov 18, 2017 07:37 PM

I guess Big Baller product will not be manufactured in China anytime soon...:smiley:

LaVar , LaVar , LaVar - - Damn • Nov 18, 2017 07:36 PM

@REHawk

FWIW, I don't believe the president should have gotten involved. This is the job of the Embassy and the Department of State, Trump had to use valuable political capital with the Chinese that will have to be repaid sooner or later and for what? 3 idiots that decided to shoplift and when left behind stayed confined in a luxury hotel?...I would have let them stew for a month or two before intervening.

Alexander, Diallo...Preston? • Nov 18, 2017 07:29 PM

@DCHawker

As far as I know/remember, to get a perking pass all you had to do is show your DL, provide the car brand, model, color and tag number and prove you were a student; proof of ownership of the car was not needed or required. I imagine with athletes it might be somewhat different.

@Texas-Hawk-10 @HighEliteMajor

You both make good points but in reality we are back to the “belling the cat ↗” conundrum or more succinctly...how do we get a capable QB?

We have not had a one since Reesing and let’s face it, why would a top QB pick KU? Playing time? A top QB will get it at a much better program. Short of finding a true gem in the rough the chances are very slim.

@approxinfinity

Duke has a pretty clean record and FWIW has a geat academic reputation and a desirable East Coast address. With the MSM help, his reputation as a top coach and his involvement with the National teams he has had an unfair advantage; Coach Ratatuille is way too sanctimonious for my taste but likely does not need to cheat to get top players.

@Fightsongwriter

I would not call 21 and 11 quite laying an egg. :smiley:

Thoughts on SDSU game • Nov 18, 2017 05:04 PM

@KUSTEVE

Spot on on Doke. He unveiled some shake and bake moves under the basket that I had not seen before; bides well for the future.

About Lightfoot, when you go for the blocks sometimes you get the block and the rest is a foul; a couple of his fouls were pretty tricky tack and incidental contact that would normally not be called. Young did a great job defending Daum in the first half.

Jam Tray in Greece • Nov 18, 2017 12:57 AM

BTW, McLemore is back playing for the Grizzlies.

@jayballer54

The scoreboard at the KU Athletics site had Tennessee as Fort Hays the entire game... :smiley:

@Kubie

I believe Channel 38 is in Lawrence and I don't get it in the KC area since I have my antenna pointed in the othre direction where just about all the other station in the KC Metro area are located.

By the way, it will only broadcast 4 mens's games and 4 women's games. You are probably better off getting something like Sling TV for the duration of the season.

Alexander, Diallo...Preston? • Nov 18, 2017 12:50 AM

@Crimsonorblue22

I don't know that either but I know that to park in a KU parking lot on an ongoing basis you have to have a parking permit which requires registering the car...unless you are using the spaces with coin meters which would be highly impractical.

Just trying to make sense of the whole situation.

Also, the ongoing FBI investigation has probably given pause to some of the prospects about programs that are suspected of being dirty, such as Kentucky, Arizona, Auburn and Louisville and are selecting safe program such as KU and Duke and even Vanderbilt.

Alexander, Diallo...Preston? • Nov 18, 2017 12:38 AM

@Crimsonorblue22

He was late, missed curfew and could not park his car in a valid space (at the new dorm) and had to park it illegally elsewhere; I will guess that the parking lot closes at curfew time. He had to go move the car the next day to a valid parking space and missed a class.

The point being that if he has an assigned parking spot at the new dorm, then his car is probably registered with KU.

What a life lol • Nov 18, 2017 12:31 AM

@jayballer54

Don't forget they also have Markelle Fultz who is doing the required injury sitting year that all 76ers picks must do. :smile:

What a life lol • Nov 17, 2017 10:56 PM

@jayballer54

It is called insurance. I have owned homes for almost 40 years and in all that time I have paid a lot of money in insurance premiums and I have had just one claim in all that time.

Like insurance, you hope you never have to use it but it sure is nice to have it if you ever need it.

Alexander, Diallo...Preston? • Nov 17, 2017 10:50 PM

@Crimsonorblue22

He has to register/get a parking permit and get a sticker so he wants to park on campus on school parking lots.

The reason he missed a class is because when missed curfew he had to park his car illegally and had to go move it the next morning. Related?

Brad Stevens • Nov 17, 2017 10:40 PM

@dylans

Me too. He would be my first choice to take over the program when Coach Self retires.

Brad Stevens • Nov 17, 2017 08:24 PM

@BShark

He has completely rebuilt the team and it is now doing great and ready to contend with the big boys.

Are we done recruiting? • Nov 17, 2017 07:31 PM

@BeddieKU23

I believe we are all hoping for this since it would be the ideal situation.

Alexander, Diallo...Preston? • Nov 17, 2017 07:28 PM

@mayjay

Billy has lived in California, Texas and Virginia while attending assorted prep schools; I don't believe he qualifies as a Kansas resident. I seem to remember but I am not sure his mom lives in Texas but it is possible she is now in Florida. If a car was leased, it would have been done by his mom since Billy most certainly would not qualify.

At one time I looked at car leases in Florida for my dad and remember looking at some really great deal that I could not dream in Kansas; Florida has much lower taxes than most states; in fact, Florida has no state income tax and this is why many high earning athletes reside there since they can save literally millions...but then Texas does not have income tax either while Kansas just raised the state income tax...retroactively...I bet the explanation will be a doozie.:smiley:

Are we done recruiting? • Nov 17, 2017 07:06 PM

@BeddieKU23

Coach Self has said several times KU will not add a players just to use up the scholarship left; it will add one if he can contribute.

@BeddieKU23

If he can spot Doke 5-8 minutes of rest per game it's a win-win.

Name • Nov 17, 2017 06:58 PM

The spread offense is heavily dependent on a good QB. KU is not getting a 5 or 4-star QB any time soon; the only hope is to find an under-the-radar unknown QB that develops into a great one like Reesing...a tall and unlikely order

Are we done recruiting? • Nov 17, 2017 06:44 PM

@RockkChalkk

I am sure the coaching staff is following players we don't know and has a Plan B, C, D and E. No sense in tipping your hand and had other schools swoop in.

@Barney

I was listing the players not mentioned in the original post; he did mention Ellis.

Alexander, Diallo...Preston? • Nov 17, 2017 06:21 PM

@BShark

If the car is a lease it is technically owned by the leasing company and rented to the user. If the leasing company is in Florida it is conceivable that the car was licensed and tagged there.

@RockkChalkk @justanotherfan

Engineering students tend to be different and not typical of other student that want to stay longer in school because the job prospects are not that great. Most of the Engineering students I know, both as a student and instructor, want to finish their degree in 4 years and move into the real world; taking a couple of classes in the Summer makes it very feasible. Now, if he wants to go to graduate school I can see where he could stay an extra year.

@truehawk93

Just of the top of my head...Tyrel Reed were Kansas POY and so was Releford and Simien, Conner Teahan was Missouri Gatorade POY, Garret was Texas Gatorade POY, Carlie Moore was Illinois Gatorade POY, Lightfoot was Arizona Gatorade POY, Xavier Henry was Oklahoma Gatorade POY...several were multi-year winners.

Essentially every player at KU, including walk-ons, has been an All State or All Conference player.

@justanotherfan

As far as I know, Lightfoot is studying Engineering and has no NBA aspiration so highly unlikely he redshirts.

Alexander, Diallo...Preston? • Nov 17, 2017 05:30 AM

If I recall correctly, Darnell Jackson was given an older truck and some money as a present from someone that had been a long time family friend and mentor. Darnell had to sit a few games and repay the money.

If Billy is found ineligible, would he leave school immediately or stay and finish his first year? Would he be eligible for a scholarship if he is found ineligible? What an effin’ mess.

Alexander, Diallo...Preston? • Nov 17, 2017 05:25 AM

Coach Self said...We are going to prepare as if we are not going to have him and it would be a bonus if he is available...or words to that effect. Sounds to me like he is not too optimistic.
How stupid would it be to drive a flashy car not obtained on the up and up and think it will not attract attention? Aren’t these high prospects and their families instructed extensively on what not to do so the status is not jeopardized? SMH.

Daum is damn good, he would be starting for most every team in the country except for very few. A very dangerous game that will test KU.

BShark said:

@justanotherfan @BeddieKU23 et al something to keep in mind is Doke plays a dying position. I think he needs to show more based on what I'm hearing/reading but we will see. Great thing is KU will be fine either way.

Embiid phoned and said...WHAT?

Just kidding, I agree with you, the trend is towards big mobile stretch 4s.

@BeddieKU23

Doke is right now pretty much an unknown since he did not play most of last season. As the season progresses he will show up in the NBA radar and his stock will go up if nothing else based on his size and potential.

A few thoughts...

Based on the two games to date we cannot say for sure which player will go and who will stay, just not enough of a sample to make a statement of any sort.

As far a KJ, we don't know for sure how good he is or will be by next season with one year of practice under KU coaching and being conditioned by Hudy.

Kentucky is doing juts fine recruiting, #3 in Rivals and #4 in Scout. If they sign Zion likely they move to the top unless KU signs one more quality player like Langford.

Embiid and the Sixers • Nov 16, 2017 04:08 PM

@wissox

The NBA did keep track of assist but not block back then. Interesting that the ABA did keep track of blocks long before the NBA did and I believe the NBA started keeping stats on block after the merger.

Embiid and the Sixers • Nov 16, 2017 07:51 AM

Here is a link ↗ with a box with the stats...

Perspective • Nov 16, 2017 02:04 AM

Doke was taken out of the game at the end because UK would have gone full Poke-a-Doke and send him to the line where he is a liability. If he can get his FT shooting in the 70s, it changes everything.

Perspective • Nov 16, 2017 02:02 AM

@BeddieKU23

Remember that Bragg also has to sit a game for something we found out later he did not do. He is still innocent until proven guilty, at least on the second game; the first game benching was fully earned.

Slightly De-Zengered • Nov 16, 2017 01:48 AM

@BShark

About time. I just installed an outdoor antenna and I get over 50 stations. I feed the signal through the existing coax wiring and I get at least 40+ station in all 7 TV sets, including the ones with long cable runs and behind two sets of splitters.

Trying Sling for one week but I would prefer YouTube TV if they can get it to work with Roku. The game had a delay of up to 40+ seconds last night and the ESPN box score was updating faster than the broadcast; not necessarily a deal breaker though.

Tim Finke (not KU related) • Nov 16, 2017 01:40 AM

@mayjay

Don Majerle has done a great job and has the program rocking. I wonder how long before he is lured away by a bigger program.

Expectations? High or low right now • Nov 16, 2017 01:24 AM

A win is a win is a win. I rather win ugly than to lose pretty...if there is such a thing. The team did not panic, held its composure and won against a very capable team. I'll take it any day.

KU is now #1 in Scout and #2 in Rivals.

@jaybate-1.0

Every player that start college can be a diamond in the rough or a bust or something in between and HS performance is not a definite indicator of future performance.

KU had had it share of both. Mason was signed as an afterthought and who could have predicted he would end up as the consensus POY 4 years later. On the other hand, It has also had highly touted players like Alexander and Bragg who turned out to be busts.

Coach Self is taking full advantage of the transfer phenomenon that is in full bloom now and you will will see the result next year; what you are seeing now are start up pains. I much rather sign a proven 4 or 5-star transfer with experience that will stay more than one year than a OAD that is a big unknown and will be gone in one year or might turn out to be not that good.

@HawkChamp

Sorry but I disagree. Being a great humanitarian, which he is, has nothing to do with doing commentary on a basketball game. There is no question that he loves the game and he is super hyped about it but his shtick wears thin after a while. He holds Duke and UNC and the ACC above everybody else and he does not hide his bias; not what you want from a sports announcer.

Perception on Devonte • Nov 15, 2017 06:59 PM

KU seems to have problems shooting in the big arenas, maybe they need to practice once or twice a week at the Sprint Center. A lot, if not most, of the shots missed were wide open looks that did not fall and KU shot well below its average; no amount of coaching fixes that problem when the players are missing open shots and your center has problems getting himself open for the pass.

@jaybate-1.0

The only certain things in life are death and taxes, everything thing else is a crap shoot.

I disagree with your take on the transfer strategy, I believe Coach Self has struck gold and the 3 player available next season will be better than any OAD he could have picked up. Wait and see how othre programs start copying the approach.

@DCHawker

I am not shouting from the mountain tops, I am simply saying that all power conference teams play easy games to start the season and when they play tougher games they often lose a few, particularly the bottom feeders; the closeness of both games last night proved that all 4 teams are not that different and all legit top 10. At this time we cannot say what conference will be good or bad since we have not seen enough to judge one way or the other. We cannot say the Big 12 will be good yet but cannot say that it will not be either, that's all.

Teams, particularly young ones, are still trying to find their identities. There is no question that KU and UK will get much better and teams that look good so far, such as Duke, are one Grayson Allen injury away from being average.
