@BShark players must reeeeeally not like Charlie
@BShark He's a D2 QB. Someone will be happy to get him probably. But he is definitely not a P5 caliber QB.
@kjayhawks I'd love to see a flea flicker or a wildcat set or a hook and latter or really anything that is telling me we are actually trying to score. Nobody can cover Sims 1v1, throw 3 straight bombs to him and see what happens. Idc, but lets change what has scored us 0 points so far
@Crimsonorblue22 Also thanks for the update!
@Crimsonorblue22 Not now I wouldn't think.
@kjayhawks or just tell Stanley to say F--- it and start letting it rip. Either way, at some point our coaches have to let one of these QBs go win a game and call vertical plays. A pick 30 yards down the field is as good as our punter...
@Crimsonorblue22 lol.
When you put in a reverse, you HAVE to also practice him throwing the ball away if he gets in trouble...
Far side bubbles don't work when your QB doesn't have a strong enough arm... Drives me freaking crazy
@kjayhawks O is going to have to score one way or another.
Have we ran a trick play all year?
@BShark Clearly missed Payne. Do we know when she will be back? ISU gave us all we wanted today at home. But good for them getting the job done.
Lol Charlie isn't even going to come out of that locker room as the head coach.
@kjayhawks Agreed. Just put whoever has the best hands back there and not risk a deep turnover.
@kjayhawks Can we bring him on as OC?
Gotta put one in
Was it a defensive TD? I missed it on the walk from the car to my apt.
@wissox 3pt% isn't an issue yet. All of these guys have historically better percentages and the law of averages will bring us back. Hell, lets save all of our makes for conference and tourney season. I hope we go into conference play only shooting 25% because then we are due to hit about 45% the rest of the season.
Looking at him now that we landed his buddy.
His top 5 is:
- KU
- Seton Hall
- Baylor
- Arizona
- Duke
Duke hasn't even offered him a scholarship yet. So I feel good about that. Arizona scares me. Baylor doesn't really. Seton Hall doesn't really. So I really feel like it is either KU or UA. And I'll give us the lean with our new signing.
Bill is so overdue to land an Uber PG too. Like he has never been able to get one of these 6'4 freaks. He is due. And I'm way to excited to see what he could do with one of them. I just hope he is also a Fall commit. Otherwise his eligibility issues scare me.
@kjayhawks and also, 1935... Jesus we are due.
I'm predicting a win guys. UT in sub 50 degree weather always struggles.... Them boys don't like the cold and always get a slow start in Lawrence.
Beaty is due for a win. I do think he works hard. And at some point hard work is due to pay off. This was the game I looked at on the schedule as a possible win.
Recipe for a win if you ask me. We got a taste of what a real win might feel like last week. We can feast on a freshmen QB and load the box. If we lose, lets lose playing M2M with them throwing the ball. Don't let them do what they do well. Force them to out talent us.
As for us being able to score more points than them, defense is going to have to put up at least one TD and special teams needs to not suck for one whole game.
Even a blind squirrel finds an acorn every once in a while. Let's get ours tomorrow.
@BShark And what makes you think Devonte is leaving?
At this second, I would give him a 50/50 chance to be in the 1st round. And because he is old, I would say it is probably actually worse than 50/50. He's a 22 Y/o Junior come February. That's old.
@wissox http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Billy-Preston-7297/ ↗
Summary of the link
Strengths:
- 6'10 powerforward (in shoes) with a 7'1 reach.
- Good athlete.
- Solid jumper
- ball handling skills a plus for his size
Weaknesses:
- Doesn't like to play D or box out.
- Ball stopper on Offense
- Not an efficient scorer in volume opportunities
Essentially, the guy is a stud he is just lazy. Won't be able to do that here so I'm not too worried.
@HawkChamp I feel pretty good about Svi being back to this point. Unless he comes out and drills 50% from 3pt the rest of the season or something crazy.
Devonte to me is 50/50. Hard to think his stock could go any higher. But at the same time it is hard to leave when you aren't given a guaranteed contract....
Bragg looks like he needs another year. As in, he would be a top 10 pick if he did. But doubt he will stay because I think he is a first rounder whenver he decides to leave. A 6'11 guy with a stroke gets drafted all day every day. It all matters on how bad he wants to land in the lottery vs a late 1st round guy.
@Crimsonorblue22 Literally the exact thing I've been thinking. Bill hasn't had a top PG since Sherron. And to think that he almost got that 5'10 fat midget to become an All-American should tell these guys everything he needs to know.
P.S. I love Sherron so please don't blow me up about it. Heart of a friggen lion.
Edit: He was an all american. I lost train of thought halfway through. I mean to the NBA.
So glad he signed early. Now we can get transcripts and see where he is at. Very confident we can get him eligible now. If he had waited until the Spring I doubted it. Between credible online high school courses and summer school there is no doubt in my mind he is going to be able to play.
Big get, but only because it was in November.
Next is Duval. I think this goes a long way in landing him.
@jayballer54 I don't think it is written in stone yet by any means. He is a very late Spring signee based on what I can tell. All depends on who leaves and stays.
Does UK get exploited and Fox and Briscoe are both back? DraftExpress, which is consistently the most reliable mock, has Fox at the end of the lottery and Briscoe not being drafted. If Fox struggles for a stretch of the season, he could easily be back. Especially if teams exploit his bad jumpshot. That would mean 2 NBA level PGs already on UK. And they just swiped a committ from Florida. So 3 PGs on the roster already at that point.
If that happens, well it comes down to us or OU. That is it. DG is a non-factor if you ask me. I think it is whether or not he wants to get better by getting pushed or get better by more PT. Whether he wants a very good shot at a NC or he wants a 1/1000 shot at one.
I think we have about at 20% chance at this point. But just keep an eye on Fox and Briscoe all season and that will give you a better answer.
I do think that UA will start to push players to overseas for a little while. In the long run, that doesn't make sense. But to disrupt the market, it definitely does. Try to get a couple of cheap future NBA stars early makes tons of sense.
The long-term move is not that though. It has to be them attempting to at least gain a 3rd of all college contracts. Once they get a KU, Indiana, Duke or UK they will start pushing players back to those schools.
I pray that KU makes the UA switch in 2020 when our contract is up. The younger generation is resinating with UA more and more every year that they grow. And, the smartest thing they did was become a "cool" brand that did focused marketing at kids and the younger generation. I have coached dozens of youth camps, and there is a clear switch from Nike to Under Armour as the recognizable brand for kids that are probably 10 or 11 and younger right now. Anyone older than that still has the Nike is God complex, but the younger generation is definitely leaning UA.
@wrwlumpy He was on like 2 months ago. The data dump set everyone back 10 months. I'm sure he will be back soon.
Mizzou put them at the line and lost on a free throw.
- Buy a chromecast.
- Download an App on your phone that changes your location to outside of the U.S. or at least outside of KC area.
- Cast game from ESPN3 to TV.
Will cost you about $40 to get the Chromecast but then you can watch it from the comfort of your home like I'll be doing.
@kjayhawks sorry man. I'm in NYC right now for the MSG game... 😎
@HawkChamp I wasn't really making a point. Just putting information out there. And I felt like Duke was the best comparison based on their personnel last season at the 4 and 5.
Personally, I think we will see this offense really come together down the stretch as long as we stay healthy. We just can't panic while we are waiting for progression from several of our players.
- Josh - Speed of the game will be something that comes easier to him as we continue to play. I expect him to get much better as the season goes on. A couple upper 20 point games that he just dominates.
- Udoka - Same thing mostly. Speed of the game is a lot to handle probably. Once he gets to where he can play 15+ mpg we should really start to take off.
- Vick - He needs to learn what his role is. Most likely it will be just to hit 3s and create turnovers and NOT turn the ball over himself.
- Bragg - Can he push himself to become a dominant rebounder that a 6'11 guy that is as athletic as he is should be? Something tells me we will get him there.
I think that everyone is ok with that. He seems like all he wants is attention anyhow. He hasn't gotten any big offers besides KU yet. I'm sure him and his family are blaming it on being at a small Kansas high school.
Next.
@JayHawkFanToo Salvy is locked up until he is in his 30s. He isn't going anywhere.
Moose I do believe we can and will bring back at a reasonable cost based on his career average and ACL injury.
Hoz's current projected contract is a 7 year contract at $19.2 million a season. This is based off 1B who were similar ages and put up similar numbers and the contracts that they received. I tend to think that his defense and overall athleticism will up his price. Boras does an amazing job at getting extra years out of contracts too.
http://www.spotrac.com/mlb/kansas-city-royals/eric-hosmer-8531/market-value/ ↗
We cannot, as a small market club, spend $20 million on a player per season for 10 years unless they are the second comings of George Brett or Zach Greinke. It will handicap us too much. Any true fan will not take that as a slap in the face as long as we get a good value in return for him. If the offers aren't there, obviously keep him and do what we can to resign him. All I can say is I see 10+ clubs that will be interested in his services and winning that bidding war won't be easy or cheap.
@jaybate-1.0 In theory, we should be able to run and shoot and rotate so well defensively that we make other teams play smaller. Right?
Our 6'8 guard should be able to score all day on their 6'9 big man. Again, in theory.
If that is the case, our lack of rebounding is only a problem if we also have a lack of scoring problem.
If we are looking for a similar comparison to ourselves though, Duke did something similar last season and it really didn't pan out. As you said, they got out rebounded. And by a significant amount.
We do have an advantage over Duke because we have two 6'6-6'8 wings and a Frank who can rebound. We also have the capability to bang inside if need be. We can play two posts where Duke was stranded with a very lonely Plumlee brother after the Jefferson injury.
@stoptheflop isn't this when you see what Jackson can do? If we are going to be able to run the 4 guard, we need him to be able to guard this type of player. Test him early and let him learn. I'm not looking for us to go undefeated this season. I just want us to pull a Nova and hit our stride late in the season.
@HawkInMizery Yea but Philly has money to spend. They even opened this season with the 9th highest payroll.
Those guys you mentioned were signed in the midst of a World Series potential team. Utley, Howard, Lee, Oswalt, Hammels, Halladay, Rollins, Pence, etc.
That payroll is still biting them in the ass too... FINALLY were able to get rid of all of those hefty contracts.
@JayHawkFanToo With Boras as his agent, I seriously seriously doubt that. If he repeats his 25 HR and 100 RBI performance we are looking at a 10 year 200-250 mil contract.
@JayHawkFanToo I would bet my next paycheck that Hosmer is not going to be a Royal after next season.
@DoubleDD Never said he was a "middling top 50 nba player" I personally think he could be the best ever. It is either him, Jordan or LeBron. Those are the top 3 in my opinion. It just depends on what you rank players by. But that is a whole other argument.
Wilt has also been known to stretch the truth... I mean what is a 0 between friends :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:
@jaybate-1.0 AWWW TINKS JAYBEE. IMA SO DUMM DAT I KAN UNLY REED AND COMMPREHIND IF SUM'N RITES HOW EYES DUZ.
JB's argument:
- Wilt would score and rebound more in today's NBA .
JB's premises behind said argument:
- Wilt scored 50 ppg game in a season.
- Traveling and charging make it much easier to score.
- Today's "small ball players" are midgets that Wilt would dominate.
- Wilt would score more than 50 ppg.
The thing I am not comprehending is how you are getting to your conclusion based off of your "logic." (Usually someone has support when they consider something "logic"). The league as a whole last season has scoring down 13.5% from when Wilt set the record. And in fact, it was up last year to one of the highest it has ever been in decades. Would that not dictate it being more difficult to score points in today's game? Because, to me, it would seem logical to think that if teams are scoring less points than they were in the 60s, even while charging at each other like bulls and never dribbling (do you even watch the NBA anymore? Just not true at all), that players would actually score less points. Less points per team = Less points scored by players. I mean just basic math right? Maybe I am crazy for thinking that. But it seems logical to me.
It is also very logical to think that Wilt wouldn't score as much, even in todays midget game, because we have a very good sample size of him playing against shorter and lighter midgets than those in todays game. So, it would be logical to assume that he surely wouldn't be able to score more against midgets (even those midgets are larger than who he played in the 60s. Significantly larger) now than he did then.
Other sound logic: The best athletes didn't play basketball. It wasn't enticing enough. Money wasn't good enough. An entire black generation wasn't recruited to play CBB and so they weren't in the NBA either. Less people in the world played basketball. Youth programs were not near as intense or common then as they are today. The training gap due to players not making enough money for basketball to be there only full-time job (except for the super stars) allowed for the best players to stay on top.
Then you have the simple math. Wilt wouldn't play 48 mpg in today's world. Less minutes=Less points. Also very simple math.
And finally, you call the assumption of "traveling and charging" to be a logical argument. Except that shooting percentages are relatively close to the same they were in the 1960s. Therefore, despite being able to trample your opponent and pivot until your heart desires, there has been another formal or informal rule change that offsets that. Probably physicality in the post. Or rather, being allowed to bump the man with the ball while shooting. Something that wasn't allowed in 1960s games. If he was touched at all while shooting, he shot free throws. So guys couldn't guard him anywhere near as aggressively as they could have today. If you factor that with the extended MPG that starting players in that era got, they played even less defense because of the potential for fouling out. The shooting percentages alone completely debunk your argument for "nonstop charging and traveling."
So again, please tell me how Wilt could average 60 a night in today's game. Because, sweetheart, it wouldn't have happened. If you could use facts or figures or actually list out how your "logic" makes sense, I really would love to hear it. Because at this point, you have reverted to childish tactics due to your poor argument that is based solely on speculation.
(Note to @jaybate-1.0 : :kissing_heart: )
@Ralph Oh 100% agreed. Personally, I think you have to let them all play right up until the deadline. This group could win another WS next season if the cards fell right.
Hosmer still has 30 HR potential.
Moose has 30 HR potential.
Cain has 25 HR potential.
Gordo has 25 HR potential.
Salvy has 25 HR potential.
This team could honestly be an offensive juggernaut if we actually got everyone firing on all cylinders for a season.
@JayHawkFanToo I think of this team more like the 2013-2014 UK team with Julius Randal. six 5-star recruits (5 in the top 10). They were able to put it together for a nice tourney run, but that season was by far a disappointment for them. 24-11 regular season. I just think it is pretty hard to win with nothing but freshmen talent. And none of them seeming like they are going to be Anthony Davis special.
@Statmachine UK's guards had 4 blocks. Willis had 3 blocks. I mean it was a joke. They played a high school team.
To add to that, they can't hit a 3. They shot 32% from 3 at home with basically nobody guarding them. I'll go ahead and take MSU by 4 in the Garden next week. Game will probably be something like 55-51 and be SUPER boring.
I'm going to be very interested to see us play them this year. A 3 posts lineup vs the 4 guard lineup. They don't even have Murray to stretch the floor this season. Even when they went 36-1 they had a guard that could hit a 3. They will be a 6-7 loss team. Maybe more.
Officially signed with Oregon. No surprise and again, Kudos to Altman. Looks like he is really building something at Oregon and could close out his career on a very high note.
@Ralph time to blow it all up and rebuild the farm system.
Trade Davis, Hosmer, Esky and Cain before the deadline this year (providing we aren't in the playoff hunt) and get as big of a haul as we can. If we can unload Gordo's contract, I wouldn't be opposed to that either. Free up "cap" space and rebuild. We have enough mediocre talent to make us look competitive until the new talent arrives. This way we can start a sustainable farm system.
I mean imagine the haul for those guys.
Davis - 3 high level prospects
Hosmer - 3 high level prospects
Cain - 3 high level prospects
Esky - 1 high potential, low level project.
Gordo - 1 high level prospect
Morales - Compensatory Pick - 1st round
Volquez - Compensatory Pick - 1st round
It will leave our lineup with something like:
- CF - Dyson .275 3 HR.
- 3B - Cuthbert .280 15-20 HR
- DH/1B - Moose .250 25 HR
- DH/1B - Dozier .250 15-20 HR
- C - Salvy .250 20 HR
- RF - Orlando .275 5 HR
- 2B - Merrifield .250 5 HR
- LF - Burns .270 1 HR
- SS - Mondesi .225 5 HR
To me, that is a competitive lineup made for Kauffman stadium. Not a World Series roster, but a lot of speed should do ok in our ball park. Maybe a 75 win team with a lot of home wins. And honestly a team with room to grow. That roster would have 6 of 9 players under 30. As some of those guys mature and come into their own we will have the money to resign them to Long-Term deals. Especially after we get our new TV money.
Of course, we still have to resign a 32 year old Dyson for this to fully take shape. I mean Burns could move to CF and Dozier to LF and we can find a DH/1B guy somewhere. But ultimately, we need to rebuild our farm system and really develop some guys for the future. The last time we traded away a major piece, it was Greinke and we got Esky, Caine and Davis and a World Series from it. So don't snub trade talk immediately. It really is important for small market clubs to move pieces when they are going to yield the highest return.
@jayballer54 I honestly think that if his sister wasn't a senior this year that we would have landed him. His parents would have pushed hard for it I'm sure. But because she won't be here, I don't find it to be much of a factor.
What I am impressed with is Dana Altman. Or for KSU fans, the one that got away. I believe he is a guy that should really get looked at for the college basketball hall of fame. He has been wildly successful (by individual program standards) everywhere he has been. I think last season was the start of a good 8 year run for Oregon where they will be perennially be in top 10.
@nuleafjhawk PHOF! :joy:
@Crimsonorblue22 Me too. It makes me respect Bill so much more. And like the players that much more. A guy knowing he is going to come here and work harder than he will anywhere else will always get my respect.
I don't understand how Stanley hasn't been given a shot yet. Willis gets sacked more possessions than he doesn't and Cozart is turnover prone. Both of those lead to short drives and your defense being on the field too long.
Give Stanley a shot, because if he can't do it either then I guess it is time for Starks to step up to the plate. And if he can't do anything of note next season, it is time to bring in a new coach. And by anything I mean win a Big 12 game and be competitive in most of them.
