@RockChalkinTexas I want to see KSU win that one just so UT can end the season on a 7 game losing streak.
The Big 12 is going to be a great battle this year between Kansas, Baylor, and Texas.
Baylor looked really good today, especially in the 2nd half.
And Charlie Moore apparently is still around at Miami and scored their final two points and had 16 total today.
And Dick Vitale is calling the game today.
The game ahead of ours, Miami-UNT is tied at 59 with about 3 minutes left.
During the Baylor-MSU game, the 2022 Atlantis field was announced and KU will be headed out there with Butler, BYU, Dayton, NC State, Tennessee, USC, and Wisconsin. That's a damn good field.
Doubt this game comes anywhere close how good their last meeting was in the Maui title game. That game was a classic and one of the best games the entire 2019-20 season.

Bama down in flames against Iona. No "chalk" final for this tournament.
I don't like that because Alabama was probably going to be the only ranked team KU played before conference play started. This is going to end up being a pretty weak non-confernce schedule for KU.

Why does David go down instead of up?
He's a very mechanical player, not an instinctual player. Catching the ball and going up just isn't natural for him.
@BShark Good players tend to make those shots pretty regularly though.

Startling suggests surprising, which, alas it's not at this point. Frustrating, vexing, perplexing, perhaps...
Dave is just a mechanical player that's had to work very hard to get to where he's at now. He has his limitations, but he's still the best all around big man KU has on the roster right now. If Zach can learn how to play defense, he'll surpass Dave and become playable next to Dave as well.

Will we see KJ sooner rather than later?
KJ is an effort player at this point, but his skill set really isn't developed yet. Mitch is the better overall player at this point, but KJ will eventually surpass Mitch.
Prison Mitch has made an appearance.

@Texas-Hawk-10 sure. He got better here because he was capable of doing it in one season and they were not.
Do you think that those guys would have gotten much better under Self?
If Embiid hadn’t been ready to go to the league but left anyway then I would say the same thing, not fair to consider him a product of KU bball
So because Embiid did get better, whereas the other two didn't, you want to claim him, but disassociate those who didn't develop as much as not being KU products? Sorry, but that's extremely hypocritical and doesn't work that way.
@approxinfinity Do you consider Joel Embiid a product of Kansas basketball?
@approxinfinity How many other top 5 recruits, Cliff was ranked 4th in his class, underperformed the way Cliff did in college, went undrafted, and only played 8 games in the NBA? KU also has Josh Selby that could've very easily been on that list as well since he only played 38 games in the NBA over 2 seasons and generally underperformed in his limited time at KU as well, but there'd be some company there.
What other top 5 recruits of the past decade or so flamed out as badly as those two? The other players in the top 5 of Selby's class were Harrison Barnes, Kyrie Irving, Jared Sullinger, and Brandon Knight. Everyone but Selby played at least 5 seasons in the NBA.
In Cliff's class, the other top 5 players were Jahlil Okafor, Emmanuel Mudiay,
Stanley Johnson, and Karl-Anthony Towns. Again, everyone but Cliff spent at least 5 years in the NBA.
In 2012, you have Isaiah Austin who never played in the NBA, but that was because of medical issues, not ability. Bol Bol might come close to Cliff, but even then he's played in 39 NBA games over 2 seasons which tops Cliff.
The fact is Cliff Alexander is by far the biggest bust of the past 10+ years in basketball in regards to high school ranking and what they accomplished both in college and the pros. No other top 5 recruit even went undrafted except for Isaiah Austin which only happened because he was diagnosed with Marfin Syndrome during his pre-draft medical evaluations, otherwise he would've been drafted as well.
At some point, Remy's shot total is going to increase as well once he gets more comfortable with the system.
Sounds like a pretty good chance is going to be playing very short handed on Saturday against WVU. Devin Neal is doubtful, Mason Fairchild and Trevor Kardell are both doubtful at TE so Jared Casey may end up getting his first start.
@BeddieKU23 Considering ESPN has had a pair of top 5 match ups air after 10pm eastern already, a 5/6 game that you had to watch on ESPN+, and an upcoming 1/2 game that's a 10pm eastern tip, I'd say ESPN doesn't give a shit about college basketball this year.
Purdue came back from 11 down late to knock off Villanova.

@drgnslayr I wonder how much of this type of defensive style Self might use this year. He's got the guys up top to disrupt the opponent getting into their sets. Seems to be part of the plan for this team to reach its full potential.
Do you really think we will run with Jalen at the 5? I'll believe it when I see it.
Jalen played some minutes at the 5 last year. I don't think it'll be frequent, but I do expect to see Jalen at the 5 with certain match ups.
KU probably wins this game if Neal doesn't get hurt.
@Crimsonorblue22 said in Toads:
Next week won't be as close
WVU isn't good either. They're about the same as TCU so it should be close and KU actually has some momentum now with back to back good performances on the road.
@nwhawkfan said in Toads:
One win and two close losses in conference within the last five games. Sounds strange, but I'm calling that progress.
Defense needs to be able to hold up over four quarters though.
That's what's going to take time because depth has to be developed and recruited. Having an off season and spring practice to fully implement the system will help a lot as well because this season is a pretty basic package because of how little time there was to implement a system.
At least KU followed up the UT win with another solid performance today. That's not something that has happened in the past decade.
If Devin Neal is healthy, KU has a solid chance to pull the upset against WVU because they haven't looked all that good recently and were in 9th place going into today.
Where can I buy a Jared Casey shirt/jersey?
We're seeing a lot of progress being made in the past few weeks. KU is probably still realistically looking at 2023/24 before making a bowl game, but KU probably will be much closer to the rest of the pack in a preseason poll next year.
@BShark said in 2021-22 PER's & Stats:
I'd take Marcus on this year's team in a second. He could have gone back to being a junkyard dog wing. That said, great decision for him to start getting regular checks.
Had Garrett come back though, KU may not have Remy or Pettiford on the roster which completely changes the outlook of this team because of that.
The radio broadcast mentioned that Chris Teahan was the best seller among the player shirts at Rally House.
The quality of opponents has to play a factor in this decision as well. If we still had Baylor, OSU, OU or other good teams, I'd say sit him and don't burn the redshirt. But, KU's last two games are against the teams currently sitting in 8th and 9th in the Big 12 respectively so those are winnable games for KU and chance to build some momentum headed into the off-season so I'd definitely play whoever gives KU the best chance to win and build thar momentum.
Here's the issue with using PER to justify who should or shouldn't play, it's an offensive statistic that doesn't account for a player's defensive abilities. This is why Marcus Garrett never had a great PER because he was never a great offensive player.
Dejuan Harris is in this same category. Because Harris isn't a guy who looks to score first, that hurts his PER number. Harris is the team's best defensive player though so he absolutely makes up for his lack of scoring with his defensive abilities just like Garrett did.
Bobby Pettiford is going to be a really good player for Kansas, but as a PG, he's not there yet because it takes time and reps to learn and efficiently run Self's system. When Devon Dotson was forced to run the show as a freshman, it was rough at times because of him not quite having the system figured out. Pettiford would be in a similar situation, so him coming off the bench in limited minutes allows Self to maximize where Pettiford is at right now.
As for the Braun/JCL debate, it really should be situational because if KU needs it's best defense on the floor, that'll include JCL, but not Braun. As for the offensive end of the floor, I'd say go with the hot hand and if both are hot, play them both together to maximize that situation.
With the Mitch/Clemence debate, it's all about defense there with Self trusting Mitch on defense much more than Clemence. Clemence is no doubt the better offensive player, but his defense is still really bad based on his limited minutes so far and was always the much bigger question with him about his overall ability. With Mitch, we know what we're going to get from him when he's in.
@FarmerJayhawk said in 2021-22 PER's & Stats:
Guys I’m imaging Marcus starting at the 2 for this squad and now I’m sad
As much as I love Garrett, and was singing his praises long before most here came around on him, Garrett would make this offense really bad, even playing off the ball. Remy and his ability to score the ball was the missing ingredient for this team on offense and with Garrett, the offense would still have a lot issues with the ball sticking and going stagnant for long stretches.
Obviously there's a drop off defensively with Remy, but once Remy gets acclimated, I do believe this is going to be one of the best offenses Self's had at KU.
@bskeet National championships should be the measuring stick at KU, but it's also really hard to win a national championship. There's currently 3 active head coaches in D1 that have won multiple titles, technically 2 becauseof NCAA sanctions. Coach K has 5 and is retiring after this year. Rick Pitino unofficially has 2, but the vacated his second title, and Jay Wright has 2 after years of having a label of a coach that couldn't do much in March.
@kuballin10 You make all of your points based on one end of the floor and totally ignore the defensive end of the floor which is why guys like Harris and Lightfoot are starting or in the rotation.
This is why the expression "defense wins championships" exists. If you have a top level defense, teams can still win games when their offense is having an off night. If the defense is bad, like it was last year, it is nearly impossible to overcome an off night on offense as we saw repeatedly last year when KU played other good teams.
Your observation on Harris are also wrong because while he's not a guy who looks to score first, he is capable of getting to the basket and forcing defenses to decide if they want to collapse on him or not. The difference between Harris and Remy, who has that same skill, is that Remy droves looking to score while Harris drives looking to pass.
I'm also tired of the 2011 Elijah/Brady debate because the numbers supported playing Brady more than EJ that year. The shooting numbers and assist rates were comparable, but Brady was much better at protecting the ball than EJ was and Brady was the superior defender.
HOLY SHIT!!!
Texas basketball down 20 at halftime to Gonzaga.
I debated driving over to Austin for the game tonight. I regret not doing so at this point.

UNC sucks. That is my take
Can I add Ohio St. to that list? Needing a buzzer beater against Akron and only beating Niagra by 10. They don't deserve to be ranked.
Why the hell is Villanova and UCLA playing at 10:30pm on a Friday night??? That needs to be a prime time game considering it's a pair of top 5 teams playing each other. I hope I can make it awake for that one and then tomorrow night is the same deal with Texas and Gonzaga playing at 9:30.
These should be high profile games in prime time slots, not relegated to spots where most people won't be able to watch.

KSU hired a guy that was going nowhere.
Frank Martin was a much better coach, but KSU fans didn't like his attitude because they wanted someone like Bill Snyder. They got someone with that type of personality, but he can't win games, so there's a lesson in that somewhere.
On top of that, Weber can't recruit, so he's always going to be inconsistent. He will sometimes stumble into talent, like he had with Dean Wade and that group, but not consistently. He's just good enough to not get fired, but never good enough to make his team a consistent factor. He probably finished 5th in the conference, then steals a game in the NCAA tournament to save his job. Or they are as bad as the roster looks, and he gets canned 10 minutes after they lose in the Big XII tournament.
That's not what happened at all at KSU with Frank Martin. Their fan base was mostly pissed off about his firing because the only year Martin missed the NCAA Tournament was his second year. Frank Martin was fired because he didn't get along with the John Currie who was KSU's AD at the time.

I see the potential for Texas. Must have been quite a carrot offered to Beard.
I can see Texas giving a big challenge to UK. And the luster has worn down with Calipari.
So how will this play out in the SEC? One conference game between UK and Texas during the season and a possibility in their conference tournament?
Will a winning UT bring in the crowds in Austin?
There's very few programs that consistently sell out games that aren't high profile match ups even among top ranked programs. I don't even believe Kentucky or UNC sell out every game even when they're elite.
Having a top rated team like Beard should have combined with the new arena should give UT a higher % of capacity since the arena will only seat about 10,000 for most games compared to the 16,000+ Erwin holds.
@wissox said in No shit, Sherlock!:
@drgnslayr I wonder if Chris Beard is going to regret coaching in the SEC. He had great teams to face nearly every night in our league and a very supportive home base. At Texas, he's coaching where bball is the side show to gulag football, and instead of playing in front of rabid fans in most B12 locations he's going to Starkville, and Gainesville, and Athens, and Nashville, etc etc in front of 'yawn, I guess I'll go to the LSU game tonight' fans.
I doubt Beard will regret that move. Texas has more resources than Tech for basketball including and brand new arena opening next season as they move into the SEC. Under Arnour is also currently in the process of minimizing their apparel deals as they're currently in litigation with UCLA over UA trying to get out of that deal. With Nike support, expect recruiting at Texas to be a very high level and UT to consistently land highly rated recruiting classes. Austin is also a the biggest city in the country without a Big 4 pro team so NIL deals in Austin are going to become very lucrative because of the lack of competition from pro sports.
Outside of KU, it's not exactly like other B12 schools are known for constantly packing their arenas either. A Texas/TCU game on a Saturday afternoon isn't going be a sell out whether played in Austin or Ft. Worth. The only places in the B12 I would consider to have rabid fan bases are KU, ISU, and sometimes WVU. That's not much different than the SEC with UK, Tennessee, and sometimes Florida.
Houston needed OT to beat Hofstra last night.
Bryce Thompson had 14 points in 25 minutes coming off the bench for OSU last night in a 43 point win over UTA.
Silvio DeSousa had 5 points and 5 rebounds in 11 minutes starting for UT-Chattanooga in an 11 point win over Loyola-Marymount on the road. He also had 4 fouls which limited his minutes.
Tristan Enaruna had 4 points in 17 minutes for ISU in an 11 point win over Kennesaw St.
I had to listen to the first half on radio and watch the second half on my phone on mute. Dejuan Harris is going to be an all conference player by the time he leaves and will be a B12 DPOY as well.
KU may very well have 2 guys averaging over 17 ppg in Ochai and Remy. Ochai looked motivated. It was also great seeing Lob City come back to KU last night.
It was also obvious last night was opening night as the chemistry with the newcomers isn't there yet.
Overall, last night was a good indicator for the season because KU was able to extend the lead against a quality opponent and not let the lead get back into single digits. I wish KU had a more challenging non-confernce schedule this year because that's what this group needs this season to reach their peak because I do think the first Texas game will be a wake up call for this group.
I like the move. With Mitch for sure leaving after this year (after his 44 years here), and Dave presumably leaving, Cam will play an important leadership role next season when the front court will be extremely young.

@KirkIsMyHinrich Is it just me, or does the NCAA tend to focus mostly on Midwestern non-Nike schools?
Oklahoma St. is a Nike school though.
I wasn't sure if they were or weren't, but that aside does it not seem that most schools being scrutinized and more importantly being punished are of the Midwestern variety?
I wouldn't really consider LSU or Arizona to be Midwest schools and they're two of the more high profile schools that have also self imposed or are being investigated right now.
