Question: if you could trade Dotson for Devonte right now would you?
The only way we survive with a non-functional Vick is with a functional Grimes, and today gives a bit of hope in that dept. By survive I mean our Target baseline... winning the Big 12.
A Dotson, Grimes, Garrett, Dedric, Udoka lineup is still capable.
We can't afford Vick to turn into a vegetable. That's the thing I struggle to believe we will overcome. When your lone deadeye is prone to bad decisions it's a problem. Makes me think whenever he touches the ball he should be bombing and not looking to create. ? I don't have the answer. Need to think about how we should be using him
@Kcmatt7 we don't want any Mitch in that rotation?
Rock Chalk, Shayok
See you in Lawrence, clowns.
Never have I welcomed the Bill Self rotation trimming more than right now. KJ and Moore shouldn't see court before the outcome of a game is certain.
KJ = scrub
Moore = scrub
Ok nevermind. this game is over.
Good d Dotson
I don't feel comfortable with Charlie going to the rack. At all.
We will win this game. We will win the Big 12. Tourney, dunno.
Vick has been a knucklehead for 3rd game in a row.
@BShark @jayballer73 it's an assumption on my part. The only thing that would hold him back imo is his 3 pt shooting. His mindset, decision making, athleticism and size seem NBA ready.
I'm also banking on a Final Four run ;) if that doesn't happen then he'll be back.
If we do have him for another year the comparison to Frank will get super interesting in year 2.
@StLJhawk Dotson will be gone after this year and we will never know. It's fun to speculate about his career trajectory. But because we only have this year, realistically, I think it's fair to comp this year to Frank's freshman year as Frank should be the ghost Dotson chases.
We have not talked about the quality of the team around Dotson vs Frank in his freshman year. I think we have significantly more talent around Dotson, which might have impaired Frank's freshman self from being multidimensional (see drives that got stuffed b/c no kick). I'd argue that Dotson is better at the kick than freshman Frank, but he's also got a better compliment of scorers. Also, Frank might have had better body control with contact and drew a ton of fouls at the rim, but Dotson turns the corner better and has more length. He doesnt try to finish through contact, he tries to burn his man. There's something to be said for both. With Frank it might have been more guaranteed points (though I'd have to look at the stars his freshman year. I seem to remember his junior year as the year that he really stepped up on shielding of the ball and driving into his man thus drawing fouls instead of getting packed). With Dotson, when it isn't an end game scenario and your team is deep, you may want to score with pace to build on runs and tire the other team out. Again, with Frank we didn't have the luxury of depth so maybe the grinding foul drawing was better suited for the team and what Self encouraged.
I like the speedy runs this team is capable of. I think of Dotson as the crown jewel of that fast transition game.
@wissox I think we are going to see a disappearance of the woeful FT-shooting big man. And I do think it's on the coaches to take them out down the stretch. It's what it is. If your starting PG couldn't ball handle well under pressure and the other team starts to press wouldnt you put the ball in a guys hands that can protect the rock? Doke or Happ don't have to be in the game. Teams need to be multidimensional.
I do wonder if teams should be disallowed to foul off-ball.
@DanR good points.
There's a difference between favorite and best though. I will always love Frank. And his senior year was incredible. He was the hero we needed. Devon's season has not been Frank Mason's senior season. 20/5/5 + 40% Trey. Stuff of legend.
But Devon is the hero we need this year! Our PGs are like playing Adventures of Zelda. Each one is a different variation of the story of Link. From child to man. This baby Link is the strongest baby-form Link we've ever seen. Will he be the most powerful when he has all his heart containers and the master sword Trey gun? Dunno. But the kid form is amazing.
Disclaimer: Naadir who?
@mayjay with his size and athleticism I don't think he needs to come back. If he had a guard's body, then yes.
@truehawk93 Agree with you to a point. DLaw and Vick are important scorers. And I do think we undervalued Doke and got to see what life looks like without him, and it was more bleak than some of us imagined.
However, there's something special about a point guard that commands the game like a veteran, with the blow-by speed he has. I'm not trying to detract from others, only to highlight how good he has been. If you were like me, you thought Q would be the 5-star jewel this year. It wasn't even certain in my mind whether Devon would start at PG from the starting gate, or Moore, or Q.
Devon has risen to meet all challenges and is in the midst of a magical season.
Hats off to the staff for recruiting an absolute star at PG in a can't miss situation. This is the first 5 star PG recruit after Josh Selby, and the best freshman PG Self has ever had.
Imagine this team without Devon Dotson.
Embiid looks like he's still growing. Is that an8 foot rim and children he's playing against?
I don't think we've given the staff enough credit for recruiting Devon. After having 2 pgs that were senior studs we forget they weren't 5 stars or studs as freshmen.
Man. Well at least Dotson was fun to watch.
Holy crap they are there. Isn't that the first shot we've had of them on sideline?
@Bwag I thought you meant buy Reynolds wrap for Fran...
You don't even have Fran there.... You could literally have anyone calling this game from their armchair. Thanks ESPN!
Fran is a silly little leprechaun. Manek is Larry Bird. That's magically delicious!
F these refs. Trash
Wow Q!
Wow that's a bad call.
@Bwag pretty crazy that they don't have their announcers at the game for two ranked teams, conference opener at Allen Fieldhouse. I'll bet Kentucky had announcers at their conference opener.
That's Grimes not Dotson
If only we had a veteran backup point guard that could protect a lead without jacking up bonehead shots.
It was a flop anyway.
@justanotherfan Jordan, Kobe and Mahomes are all much smarter than Andrew Wiggins. I just don't think the kid is exceptionally bright. At least he doesn't have the same sports IQ. Jordan was very creative. Kobe was a master at incorporating pieces of game into his own. Mahomes is extremely unconventional and just knows what works. Has Wiggins ever demonstrated much creativity on the court?
@wissox thanks for sharing! Enjoyed the tour
Wow, this thread is a mess! Gonna shut it down.
Sorry for the interruption. Should be good now.
Dave jump KJ in rotation?
Wow. I'm loving our passing game right now.
So far, Moore is less.
@Bwag that depends on whether it is successful come playoff time I think.
@HighEliteMajor bring on Big Dave! (might be skewed if its partly mop-up minutes against scrubs but I don't care! He deserves to play)
@Kcmatt7 reminds me of Wake Forest 2008-2009
Ish Smith or Jeff Teague at point, and then a bunch of trees.

@Crimsonorblue22 Home for Christmas. Wife retires end of March, then cruise to celebrate!
Nice! Tell her early congrats for me!
@JayHawkFanToo they certainly seem prone to the same tragic fate as last year, ranking dead last in pace.

Also, only Trae Young has a worse 3pt% for players with 120+ 3pt attempts.
@jayballer73 Agreed. There's no way UVA or Tennessee should be above us. UVA has only beaten 1(?) ranked opponent in Maryland, and Tennessee lost to us.
@wissox this isn't the first time we've been flat going into the holidays. And it won't be the last. Boys in vacation mode. All good!
