Welcome Parker Braun! • May 17, 2023 07:14 PM

@Jethro I agree he’s probably our best option right now but I don’t think he’s the same LOCK for minutes that Juan, KJ, and Hunter are that would deter a quality player from joining the team.

@Jethro said in Welcome Parker Braun!:

We're not going to get Prince Charming to play 7 minutes a game. We could do much worse. The guy can rebound, and shoots pretty good. He is an intelligent player, and a pretty good passer. Got a sweet little hook shot. Definitely unsexy add. I question the quality of what we can get for the other 2 slots. Obviously they're going with KJ at the 4, backed up by Marcus Adams. How many minutes will we have to cover on the 3/4? 10 to 12 max, right? We're not going to get a star that wants to play 5-10 minutes a game.

I'm all for Bill getting a guy who can score with a hook shot. Mitch was good for like 2 or 3 of those a game often in big moments.

I think there is a world where Self could sell a guy that there is still a starting spot at the 4 but to me it's really the 3 that is still up for grabs. Not sure Timberlake is a shoe in for starting spot. I'd assume one of Morris and Jackson will take the two. But I think there are a LOT of minutes up for grabs in that 3/4 spot. KJ is going to get 30 minutes but I'd imagine some of that would be at the 5 spelling Dickinson. So I'd say there are 20 minutes up for grabs at the 4 and all 40 at the 3. The competition for those minutes will be with Timberlake and Marcus Adams Jr, with Johnson and McDowell likely getting limited minutes as off ball guards at the 2/3. I could legitimately see signing a guy who could still play 25-30 minutes in an open competition with that bench group.

@jayballer67 don’t think you can have too many options at QB after #6 leaves.

Hard to say who’s skills will really translate.

Maybe we can hold out hope that this is a ploy to get his own NIL upped at Kansas? Is that a possibility? I know I'm reaching here. I totally agree with @Kcmatt7 that if Duke is on the table, why not stay here?

I get it’s a box to check but that doesn’t mean it can’t also do some good if approached with an open mind. I learn things all the time from all kinds of trainings. That should be encouraged and celebrated not belittled. Maybe that’s just me.

Huggins Retires • May 09, 2023 06:51 PM

@FarmerJayhawk Not that I’m aware of other than really talking about the personal growth that came from it. I don’t doubt Jalens sincerity at all either, because the way he talks about it shows genuine self reflection, remorse, and growth. That’s kind of what I’m trying to get at in this discussion I guess. For Jalen, we know what that looked like because we followed it as it was happening. I fully believe Huggins is capable of the same type of reflection and growth but I guess for me I just plan on waiting to see that before I move on.

Huggins Retires • May 09, 2023 06:12 PM

@FarmerJayhawk I just look at what Jalen did with his DUI and wish everyone would learn from that. He made an apology but never expected it to go away based on that apology. He continued to address it and embrace it as an opportunity to grow. I think it's fair to expect the same from a head coach. That process has started with the apology statement. We will see if he continues to face it head on or tries to avoid it and hope it goes away.

Huggins Retires • May 09, 2023 06:00 PM

@approxinfinity So if you make a mistake, say you're sorry and just move on? How do we know if a person is actually sorry? To me, this is how we've operated as a society for too long and that's why we have people who feel like they can do whatever they want and get away with it. Again, real, natural consequences need to become commonplace in my opinion.

Huggins Retires • May 09, 2023 05:38 PM

@approxinfinity To me, I recognize everyone is going to make mistakes but what I care about is if we LEARN from those mistakes. Maybe that's just the teacher in me that when someone says they've learned something my immediate thought is, cool, show me. And I think that is important for a few reasons. First, it gives an aggrieved party can feel a since of repair without seeking vengeance in the form of punishment, but also, shows others how THEY can learn the same thing maybe before making the same mistake. These days, an apology is almost as likely to be written by a PR person than by the offender so I have trouble trusting the sincerity of public statements like that.

KJ Adams Discussion • May 09, 2023 05:27 PM

@BShark said in KJ Adams Discussion:

@benshawks08 If you can find data points of this ever really happening I'm listening. I haven't seen it historically though. Willing to be surprised again but he just isn't really a jump shooting guy.

I'd point to a lot of big men that develop more of a shot as they enter the NBA. Joel didn't shoot any threes at kansas but is happy to chuck them these days. Obviously, Joel is an MVP and not really a fair comp for anyone development wise but he's the first that popped into my mind without doing any digging.

Huggins Retires • May 09, 2023 05:24 PM

@approxinfinity For me, because all it did was admit he was wrong. That's an important first step, but definitely the easiest one. A coach, especially at the level of Huggins, is the face of the program. They are supposed to represent the values of the team and the university. If those comments are in line with the values of the university, they shouldn't fire him or seek out any other kind of consequence. However, if the university does NOT want those types of comments representing the values of the university, then how does Huggins show that he not only recognizes his comments were out of line but that he understands what IS in line with the values he is supposed to represent.

Huggins Retires • May 09, 2023 05:16 PM

@approxinfinity So what should happen in your opinion? Everyone just moves on like it didn't happen? What consequences would make sense?

"Product of his environment" can explain WHY this happened, but to me isn't enough to excuse it. I believe people can change and get better but that doesn't happen without work.

KJ Adams Discussion • May 09, 2023 05:11 PM

@BShark To me it's the 90% of attempts being in the paint that give me the slightest hope that he might have a bit more of a shot than he's shown. The dude played the 5 at 6'7". Why? Because he's who Self trusted the most to play that position. He trusted that KJ wouldn't take outside shots because that wasn't his role. Not because he couldn't make them but because he knew he wasn't supposed to. I heard rumors (maybe it was on here?) that Zuby also had a decent shooting stroke but never showcased it because that wasn't his role.

Every year a player starts after starting the year before, their role expands. It will be interesting to see how KJ's expands. Until I see him shooting 15-25% on a decent volume of shots I will BELIEVE that he can develop as a competent shooter outside of the paint, even if he doesn't become a legit 3 baller.

2023 Recruiting • May 09, 2023 04:47 PM

@BeddieKU23 Pretty sure 25 minutes is the absolute floor for his avg minutes.

2023 Recruiting • May 09, 2023 04:02 PM

Did someone say KJ at the 4? Seems like I've heard that somewhere before but can't remember where...

I do have hope that KJ can be a better rebounder when competing against 4s instead of 5s for position. His athleticism is there and has shown up some in his Offensive rebounding and perhaps as a 4 the task will be more similar to attacking the offensive glass instead of wrestling for position against someone massively bigger than him.

Huggins Retires • May 09, 2023 03:59 PM

There's a good clip I've seen floating around of Ta-Nehisi Coates explaining to a kid in an audience why some folks use the N word while others cannot. He brings up the slur used by Huggy in that conversation. His main point is that we accept all of the time that words have different meanings depending on context and part of that context is who is saying the words and who they are saying them to. He talks about how his wife will sometime use the B word when hanging out and joking with her female friends and notes in that context it would be inappropriate for him to participate in the use of that word. All kinds groups have words that are appropriate for them to use when interacting with each other but then can be offensive if used by an outsider.

Words matter. So does context. In the context of the Huggy clip he was clearly not interacting as part of the in group in his use of the word. He was using a slur as a slur to demean other people. There will be consequences for those actions. Is immediate firing too harsh? Hard for me to say. His apology seemed authentic even if it lacked a ton of depth. If I were his boss (which I'm not) I'd be looking for some kind of outreach or effort to repair that relationship and SHOW he knows what he said was wrong and why. If all he is willing to do is say, I messed up, I'll try not to do it again, well that might not be enough for me. But again, I'm not his boss so we will see how this shakes out.

Here we go.. someone said a bad word, thank god we have so many social justice warriors able to come to the rescue of all us fragile people that cant handle it and make sure this bad person is punished as if he is the flesh and blood of satan himself.

I do agree that punishment as a concept is generally not a good method for causing any genuine change in human behavior or beliefs. The trick is figuring out what is a natural consequence for the offender rather than a punishment to appease the offended.

Huggins Retires • May 09, 2023 01:30 PM

I was surprised I kind of liked his apology. He basically said, I messed up. I know it. There are consequences for my actions. I accept them. Only thing missing to me is some attempt at repair but that wouldn't happen in a statement anyway as that is more about actions from this point on.

@RockkChalkk What would your ideal response to something like this be?

@Texas-Hawk-10 Interesting. I can see what you are saying but to me Zuby is the safer prospect but Udeh has the higher ceiling. Udeh’s physical tools and athleticism give him the potential (ceiling) to turn into something great. Zuby can be and was already becoming a solid college big man who can be a strong rebounder and good finisher down low but there wasn’t the same spark when he was on the floor. He has yet to get me to the edge of my seat the way Udeh did in spurts last year. I’m sure the injury was a big part of that.

Arterio Morris is a Jayhawk • May 02, 2023 07:12 PM

@jayballer67 To me it's cool if you want to continue to be a fan and pull for him off the court and not associate or like him off the court, but I don't think it's silly or childish for someone else to say they might rethink going to games, giving their money to a program actively lifting up a player in a situation like this.

Feel like this is a big to each his own kind of deal. Everyone has their own personal connection to issues like this so for me I'm gonna do my best not to judge others on their takes here. The only take I have a real problem with is if someone were to say it isn't a big deal and shouldn't even be considered but I haven't seen any of that going around.

2023 Recruiting • Apr 28, 2023 07:27 PM

Terry lost both of the top 50 UT recruits. Ouch.

Thoughts on Arterio Morris • Apr 26, 2023 08:51 PM

@Crimsonorblue22 Feel like it's just such a different situation than we were in with Jalen. Jalen was a kid that made a mistake that if we are honest, a lot of college kids make (whether they get caught or not). It was reckless, it endangered other people, it endangered himself, and was a mark on his character that followed him to every opposing arena. It was NOT a direct attack on another person. He addressed it and took responsibility for it. He never tried not to talk about it or to brush it under the rug. He accepted his punishment, and used it as motivation to be a better leader.

I don't see how a similar redemption ark can be scripted for Morris. Does he deserve a second chance? I think so. I believe everyone has the ability to grow and change. Does he deserve the weight and credibility of the KU brand to do all the heavy lifting of the work of rehabilitating that image? Not to me. Counseling would be a start. Just because I believe a person should be given the opportunity to grow and change, doesn't mean they get to be celebrated for getting buckets night in night out while they do that.

It’s a tricky question. And thankfully a question with rarely an occasion to be asked. The best explanation I can give: You clandestinely root for them to advance to the elite 8 as a fellow big 12 team but no further because there would be no end to their delusional claim that they are now the best program in the state.

NAILED IT! I've explained this same thing to all the folks in Texas who cared about basketball for a little bit there.

@Texas-Hawk-10 Thanks for the edit. Guess I can't count.

NCAA NON- KU GAMES • Mar 27, 2023 01:46 PM

@wissox I view UConn as kind of the anti-KU. Where KU has the consistency, UConn has the titles. Their down years can be pretty down.

KU's lowest win total since 99 is 21 (in the 20-21 year). UConn has had 11 (ELEVEN!!) seasons where they didn't reach that mark in that same time frame.

But they have 4 titles and we have 2 (boy that second one helps!). Also, I find it interesting that they've only been to the Final Four 5 times (now 6). Meaning when they get there they tend to win the whole thing. They certainly seem on track to do just that again this year. Comparatively, KU has 16 final fours overall winning it all 4 times. KU has been to the final four 5 times since 99, winning it all twice of course.

Was it just HEM who wanted to trade resumes with UConn or were there more on here that would prefer their recent history to ours?

NCAA NON- KU GAMES • Mar 27, 2023 12:26 PM

@Kcmatt7 I'm definitely in the anyone but UConn camp right now. Kinda want FAU to win just because.

@BShark I wonder if the Terry hire is as much a push as anything. Like are there any real splashy hires out there right now? Who could Texas get right now that would be really good? Maybe their guy just isn't out there right now so might as well keep this rolling and take the good PR while still keeping an eye out for the next guy. Give Terry two years and see what happens. Maybe the coaching market will have a few more superstar hires out there by then.

NCAA NON- KU GAMES • Mar 25, 2023 10:10 PM

NCAA NON- KU GAMES • Mar 25, 2023 10:06 PM

@BShark really think the strategy was to work the foul count on that one. When FAU got into the double bonus with having only 3 or four fouls the other way, KSU turned up the physicality daring the refs to make FAU shoot free throws every possession for 10 minutes in a half.
