Did they show our locker room?

Ok, so I'm not dreaming! Seemed like every locker room celebration was broadcast, but I never saw ours.

Get Ready For the Riverboat Gambler... • Mar 20, 2017 05:27 AM

I was anticipating Purdue in our bracket before the end of the regular season. I thought they would be a 2 or 3 seed.

They must be the highest #4. We would have to play them at some point. Might as well be on Thursday, when the team will be able to prepare for a short week.

FWIW, I also noticed the asymmetry. The basket interference call was complete ref interference. The replay showed the hand on the net was an MSU player, but they took the basket from KU.

The technical on Vick was also ref interference. They were trying a little too hard to control the game, so say the least.

Day 3 Tournament Games • Mar 19, 2017 01:08 AM

If -- and it's an unlikely IF -- Arizona loses, it removes the team that could have a home town advantage from the Final Four (in Phoenix).

Day 3 Tournament Games • Mar 19, 2017 01:03 AM

BTW - I will be at the games in SJ next weekend in case anyone else here is headed to the games...

Day 3 Tournament Games • Mar 19, 2017 01:03 AM

@KirkIsMyHinrich In a different way, Mark Few and Gonzaga would fit that bill. The monkey will remain on one of their shoulders...

@Blown & @Bwag

I am no fan of Marshall or WSU, but help me understand how he wouldn't have a "real shot" at at national title at WSU?

They made it to the final four sooner than Gonzaga. Butler made it to the championship game (twice) and missed it by that much..

I know there is this perception floating around that only major conferences can win the title, but what is the logic behind that?

Has anyone picked KU to win it? • Mar 16, 2017 04:35 AM

I just tried to fill out a bracket without bias... but I just couldn't pick against KU. Anyone else have the same problem picking KU to lose?

The coach at UC Davis is the former coach of Bradley.

Just sayin'

The suspense!!! • Mar 15, 2017 02:46 AM

I'm expecting some adjustments from Danny that change the game.

I am not sure why the NCAA seems to hate all Kansas teams. WSU gets routinely under-seeded and KU get the shat often enough. At least, we are the only state with at least 3 Division I teams with all the teams making it to the dance…Kansas is THE basketball state indeed.

They didn't distribute the KS teams very well (KSU and WSU face each other if they get past their 1st round opponent) and there are THREE B12 teams in the midwest with KU and ISU -- the two B12 champions -- seeded to face each other in the Sweet 16.

They don't do a conference any favors by orchestrating a match-up of conference opponents so early to reduce the number of teams from the conference (and there for the $$$ earned for the conference.)

The suspense!!! • Mar 14, 2017 06:41 AM

I'm afraid that KState chant has converted this KU fan - who typically supported the state schools whenever KU was not involved -- into a Wake Forest fan for at least one game. Go Danny!

BTW, this officially marks my split from any major school in KS other than KU. Wichita State alienated me a couple years ago.

I'm Happy With This Season IF........ • Mar 14, 2017 06:39 AM

I'll be happy if we play each game like there's no tomorrow and play to the full extent our capability (because that will likely result in a new banner in AFH.)

How a 16 defeats a 1 • Mar 10, 2017 06:53 AM

On the upside-- If the B12 is as good as we think, it's possible KU could meet 1 or 2 in the tournament. Perhaps it's a blessing to not have to play ISU, WVU, or Baylor a fourth time..

Lunardi does not speak for the NCAA Committee. They have often talked about seeding and selection of teams that were missing key members of the team and how they take that into account. Lunardi doesn't have to.

Whether we were the #1 seed or #3 really has little impact except on the serpentine style of placement of the 2s, 3s, and so on.

How a 16 defeats a 1 • Mar 10, 2017 06:20 AM

@Blown You forgot one more thing: Have a team that has taken a week off play a team that wins a play-in game and is feeling the momentum.

Some Crazy Big-12 stats over the years. • Mar 08, 2017 06:10 AM

ISU Home record in 13 seasons: 72-38

There are 5 teams listed with more home wins. If this is true (and maybe this is the data error) it makes me question that so-called "Hilton Magic."

I think the turning point was the trip to S Korea. We saw a much improved Frank Mason in that tournament when he had more scoring threats around him. He was more in control and distributed with more confidence.

I expected fantastic things last year because of that experience.. and he had seasoned upperclassmen and talent all around, but I think he played injured and tended to defer to Selden and Ellis.

This year, no more deferring. He can shoot better than ever and he can drive and take contact better than ever...

His vision of the court is better -- Turnovers have been greatly reduced from the early years.. The game is truly moving at a different speed for him.

Tornado • Mar 07, 2017 04:46 AM

Ok.. my family farm is north of Lawrence, south of McLouth and Oskaloosa... I have to check on what happened. My folks are in Lawrence so I assume they had no problem.. Whither the storms? Valley Falls? Tonganoxie?

Out here in Bay Area, we had pea-sized hail yesterday and people are still talking about it like some freak of nature.

Senior pm • Mar 02, 2017 06:26 AM

What I want to know is who are the two poor souls sitting in section 209? And WHY?

HC Openings for Our KU Assistants • Mar 01, 2017 01:28 AM

@Lulufulu That could be soon!

@Hawk8086 Ding! We have a winner.

Now, is Purdue a #2, #3 or #4 seed? Depends on the B10 tournament results probably..

By your post it sounds like you’re implying the NCAA selection committee tries to stick it to KU. I know you’re not the only one saying this here. I’m not so sure this is true. I know east coast bias will be cited. Not sure of any other excuses people will make.

Fair to read it that way... I don't have any evidence that the NCAA has a grudge.

H o w e v e r . . . I do think they like competitive games.

I've often wondered if the committee makes an effort to create dramatic competitions. Are those matchups that feature contrasting styles and interesting stories really a coincidence or more by design?

Senior Night vs OU • Feb 28, 2017 06:30 AM

Lon Kruger did not get the win tonight, but he showed his kids that they could play toe-to-toe with us in AFH -- until the 6th man kicked in and we awoke from our ceremony-induced coma. OU, young and inexperienced, lost composure. Next year, they may be a bit tougher to knock out.

If OU ends our streak next year, we may look back to this game as the source of evidence that Lon could refer to over and over for lessons of what to do to keep a great team on its heals, and what not to do when a lion bites back.

Alright, time to get ready for March. The NCAA has to find that devilish match up for KU... (do you hear the Beastie Boys "Listen all of y'all it's a sabotage")

Who will it be this year?

Villanova again?

What about getting under our skin with former coaches and players: UNC? WSU? Syracuse?

Is it size like Purdue? Notre Dame? Florida State? Gonzaga?

Or is it athleticism: Oregon, UCLA and Arizona?

What a tremendous story! Thank you for sharing the photos and personal conversation with us!

I am hoping for good news for you and the team in the coming weeks!

It's Official - KU #1 • Feb 26, 2017 08:31 PM

Kenpom is not convinced.

Espn is neat. • Feb 23, 2017 06:14 AM

Just imagine if Duke had secured their 13th straight conference title...

The 30minute preview show leading up to the game would have been a retrospective...

We would be watching the 5 part series tonight -- it would already be in the can, ready for broadcast -- built from the materials they started developing 8 years ago when the streak was 5 games long and they already deemed it the single greatest accomplishment in sports history. Interviews with the players over the years.. and interviews with coaches.....

Think I'm exaggerating? If Grayson Allen had tripped someone tonight, there would be a special report tomorrow and a special piece on Duke's struggles ready for the weekend games.

KU vs the Purps • Feb 23, 2017 06:02 AM

this will sound weird, but one of the reasons we reached #13 is because of TCU -- or more specifically, Jamie Dixon who has raised the level of play of the worst team in the league significantly in one year while the others have remained more or less where they were.. The improvement at from the "bottom" has put additional pressure on all the teams -- It's simply more competitive from top to bottom.

For a team like KU, we take every team's best shot every game. We're used to playing 16 games with teams close to their ceiling. But the other teams aren't used to such consistent competition night-in and night-out. So WVU, Baylor and ISU have faltered to 'lesser' teams because they weren't used to such resistance.

While those teams haven't broken the streak, they'll all be better for it during the tournament.

And seriously, you can’t say "you suck", you have to S-P-E-L-L it O-U-T on ESPN at 10:30 pm, but you can play trailers for horror movies at noon on a Saturday when little kids are actually watching?

^^^^^
THIS is the hypocrisy that more people should be outraged about. The ads that the networks show are off-the-charts inappropriate and have a far wider negative impact than one fan getting irate at a coach.

Just to be clear: I'm not defending the fan's behavior. But for the network blush about that and meanwhile remain unconscious to content of their advertising is totally hypocritical.

One thing Mizzou fans do well... • Feb 22, 2017 05:42 AM

Right about now, it's washing over the rest of the SEC what they really got when they picked up Mizzou.

@wissox Good points -- In fact, Self may be even better in coming years for having this team - for being forced to experiment and move out of his comfort zone and adopt some alternative approaches.

PRETENDERS VS CONTENDERS • Feb 19, 2017 10:51 PM

@BShark I agree.

I'm not a fan of UK, but it seemed like we had to play a great game to beat them. It was single digits, we trailed most of the game (I know it's become a common occurrence), so I'm thinking that I can't call them a fraud without diminishing our team a bit.

UCLA is pretty athletic and has an experienced guard. That's usually a good formula in the post-season. And their regular season is pretty solid.

And Gonzaga is a bit trickier to evaluate, but I would not overlook them. They are dismantling lesser teams, and it's tempting to blame it on the opponents. But watch how they do it-- the blocks, the offense they run and note the way they play together. They have the elements to knock out plenty of the top 20 teams. I may have to eat my words if they get knocked out in the second round, but they look capable of going deep to me, and the coaches (in the USA Today poll) certainly could spread their votes to others, but it's pretty concentrated at the top. It means something to be undefeated - especially with all the double-digit victories that they've had.

Vick Has Earned The Start • Feb 19, 2017 10:34 PM

Watching yesterday's game (and in context with the past couple of games) I had the same thought about Svi's defense. The +/- doesn't surprise me at all and I think is a fair indication of what happens when Svi is out there. I love Vick's athleticism. I would not be surprised to see Vick start a game in the near future, but I think the minutes on the floor are a better indicator of where Self's mindset is. They will probably be splitting time going forward.

It is easy to get frustrated with Svi, but just remember that he is still younger than JJ and more than 90% of the players he faces.

Yes, he's been in the system 2.5 years, and he's got extraordiary size and agility. We expect more based on what we see and know.

However, I'll make a case that patience is well-deserved-- as much as ever.

I believe the 'ugly' we see with Svi's game is the product of focused *learning' a new skill. It's well-established that the development a new level of any skill is preceded with a dip or degradation on performance just before everything starts to click with the new skill.

We may think that he was better earlier in the year (slashing, shooting, etc.) but his ball handling was not great and he got lucky occasionally with no-calls on traveling (none more prominent than the game winner vs KState)... I suspect he is working on this part of the game with the hope he will have developed a new competency in time for the Tourney.

I think he will keep getting better. He's already a lethal shooter and plenty mobile and athletic. We still need to give the kid patience as he develops.

Best game I’ve been to was the last mizzo game, hands down. Triple ot ou game was awesome, 2 years ago, when ll landed on Perry during the West Virginia game was a great come back too. Of course last pm was awesome to be there. I’ve been super blessed to see those games! The noise thing might have been lame, but pretty sure Adrian lost that ball due to me and a thousand of my friends! We actually broke the Kentucky record 3 times Monday pm. The few that left and the ones that gave up didn’t hurt us at all. I call those guys soft!🚷🍦🌬❄️

JEALOUS! I've seen some good ones, but they were in the L Brown and R Williams era. You've seen been to some of the greatest games of the Self era.

As for the best of the games you mentioned I have to give it to the final Missouri game. When we won, the feeling I had was very similar to winning the national championship. I know it shouldn't be the same as it gives Mizzou too much credit, but the emotion was similar.

The OU 3OT game was unique in that it was back and forth and both teams played so well throughout.. I just marveled at both and was proud that we came out on top.

The WV game was just so improbable that I'm still trying to process how incredible that comeback was. It looked like we were baked.. there was virtually no margin for error,, And after everything went wrong earlier, the momentum shifted and everything started to work out for us.

Whats Up With Danny Manning? • Feb 15, 2017 10:44 PM

@drgnslayr That will be interesting. I agree, that expectations are hard to manage... but WF has to realize how many HOF coaches are in their league and the recruiting patterns are deeply established... WF has a little history, but it's asking for a lot.

Did You See? • Feb 15, 2017 10:37 PM

Well put.

It will be interesting to see if that changes any behavior.

Whats Up With Danny Manning? • Feb 15, 2017 10:27 PM

My money is on Danny to start having some success in the next 2 years. The old ACC guard is changing and it presents an opportunity for him. Roy, K and Boeheim are not going to coach much past 2020 if they get that far.

2018 Roster • Feb 15, 2017 02:40 AM

Don't underestimate Vick in your plans for next season. He is very athletic, has demonstrated his shooting prowess, and will be a junior (3rd year in the system).

Given that playing KU is every team's Super Bowl, it seems fitting that we just had our Super Bowl moment.

@Fightsongwriter Then Missouri still tops tonight because it was Missouri. WVU will never mean what Missouri did to KU.

If WV won the game tonight, a lot of us would be talking about how WV is the new Mizzou,... On a lot of levels, particularly the flops, hacks, and the less aesthetic style, they are picking up where Mizzou left off..

THE FAMOUS LANDON LUCAS SCREEN. • Feb 12, 2017 08:29 PM

Well, my conspiracy theory goes like this: Officials get a suggestion to 'just keep it close'.. Doesn't matter who wins -- they aren't biased toward KU or TT... just a close game. So they call it the way they need to keep it close... Ticky tack fouls on Mason and JJ.. Let TT run wild (I'm thinking of all those over-the-back no-calls) to stay competitive. When it gets to crunch time, they have a sense of how much they've had to lean throughout the game and they 'lean back'.

Who benefits from keeping it close?

B12? Nope. The league benefits from a strong KU team (see Gonzaga)

NCAA? Not really. They won't mess with officials (just tournament seedings)

Who could it be? Who has money at stake? Who benefits from close games?

.

.

Networks do. Close games = ratings, spike usage of mobile, etc.

But would ESPN have any motive to tamper with its product??

Frank has to believe that they will call a foul when he is hammered on a drive to the basket.

We have to get off of ESPN. They are desperate for drama. Possibly explains why these kinds of games occur.
